A Message from Paul Grove

Dear Friends of WEDU PBS,

“You cannot be serious! That ball was on the line! Chalk flew up!”

If you DON’T know where this exclamation is from, I have a story for you, and if you DO know where that exclamation is from, then I have great news! This month, WEDU PBS premieres Gods of Tennis on July 23 at 9 p.m.

It’s a must-watch series for anyone who cherishes the epic battles that rocked the tennis world during its golden age in the 1970s and 1980s. If you’re not a tennis fan, grab some popcorn and pull up a chair. This is a fun drama!

As a teenager, I vividly remember Saturday mornings tuning in to the Breakfast at Wimbledon specials. The rivalry was palpable, especially during the Björn Borg–John McEnroe era. Half the audience rooted for the calm, collected Swede, while the other half, including myself, cheered for the fiery American. I even had a McEnroe poster on my bedroom wall, a constant reminder of his tenacity and spirit.

Gods of Tennis is a three-part series that delves deep into the legendary years of tennis, using the prestigious Wimbledon tournament as its backdrop. The documentary features interviews with some of the biggest names in tennis—Billie Jean King, John McEnroe, Arthur Ashe, Björn Borg, Chris Evert, and Martina Navratilova. These icons didn’t just play tennis; they redefined it, each uniquely, and their influence extended far beyond the court.

The first episode spotlights Billie Jean King and Arthur Ashe, two trailblazers who brought profound changes to the game. The mix of contemporaneous footage and insightful interviews paints a vivid picture of their impact. The series is interspersed with interviews with King, and we hear stories from sports journalists and other tennis legends like Sue Barker, Pam Shriver, Chris Evert, and Martina Navratilova. Later episodes bring us closer to the Borg and McEnroe rivalry that so many of us remember fondly.

Watching this series reminded me of the dynamic days when we marked our calendars to watch these titanic tennis matches. Mark your calendars and prepare to relive some of the greatest moments in tennis history with Gods of Tennis. Whether you were Team Borg or Team McEnroe or admired the grace of Chris Evert or the power of Martina Navratilova, this series is bound to bring back the excitement, the drama, and the love for a sport that has captivated generations.

As always, I welcome your comments and feedback. Feel free to email me at paulgrove@wedu.org.

WEDU PBS Staff Spotlight: JULY 2024

Latrice Johnson Cabrera

What she does at WEDU: I am the Education Coordinator. I handle the Education team’s marketing, and I plan and prepare for events. I work with families to provide them with free educational resources, and am also in charge of creating WEDU’s free monthly Education enewsletter, EdConnect, which you can sign up for at wedu.org/preview.

Employed at WEDU since: May 2024.

Hobbies & passions: I love being able to go outside and explore all there is to do in Tampa. I’m a dog mom, so I enjoy going to parks and outdoor fresh markets where my pup can tag along. I also love discovering and cooking new recipes for my family. When I am not doing an outdoor activity, I am relaxing at home, planning my next cruise, or playing PC and Switch games.

Favorite PBS program: Wild Kratts.

In the short time that I have worked here, I’ve loved the environment and the flexibility to be creative in everything I do. My team has been supportive and helpful in many ways, and for that, I am grateful.

A Simple Gift for the Future of WEDU PBS MANY WAYS TO GIVE

Did you know that you can name WEDU PBS as a beneficiary of a bank account, retirement account, IRA, life insurance policy or insurance annuity?

Beneficiary designations are an easy way to support WEDU without going through the estate planning process. And if your plans ever change, you can redesignate your beneficiaries.

It is also good practice to review your beneficiary designations every two to three years to be certain your assets will reach your intended recipients. This is especially important since these designations take precedence of your will when the time comes to pass along these assets. This is also why beneficiary designations are an effective and easy way to leave a gift.

To update your beneficiaries, often it is as easy as logging into your account online and navigating to your beneficiary settings. If your account does not have online capabilities, you can ask your plan administrator for beneficiary forms for you to complete and return.

The information most commonly needed about WEDU is:

• our tax ID, #59-0840626,

• our address: 1300 N Boulevard Tampa, FL 33607

A designation of as little as 10% can make a tremendous impact on WEDU PBS and the programs you love.

For more information or to notify us you’ve already named WEDU as a beneficiary, email giving@wedu.org or call 813-739-2959.
