A Message from Paul Grove Dear Friends of WEDU PBS,
Have you ever been shocked to discover that someone was trying to harm you or your family?
It happened to me just a few weeks ago when I screened The Fentanyl Project, a new documentary that premieres on WEDU PBS on Thursday, May 16 at 9 p.m.
I had heard of fentanyl. I had even heard firsthand from U.S. Senator Rick Scott about the devastating impact of the fentanyl crisis on families and communities in Florida and across the nation.
And still… I was shocked by the threat to our collective safety because fentanyl can look deceptively harmless, especially to someone who has no intention of ingesting it. Many people are unknowingly ingesting fentanyl with deadly results.
While watching the film with my four sons, I learned that fentanyl is a synthetic drug, 100 times stronger than morphine, and a significant contributor to fatal and nonfatal overdoses in the United States. Anyone who experiments with drugs, takes pills, or receives a pill from a friend—believing it to be Adderall or Xanax—is at risk. Often, these individuals have no intention of taking fentanyl but end up ingesting a potentially lethal dose unknowingly.
The Fentanyl Project explores a heartbreaking public health crisis through the stories of local families and first responders who courageously shared their experiences. You will see, as I did, that it's not just drug users who are at risk of a fentanyl overdose.
I am proud that WEDU and other Florida Public Media stations have taken steps to inform and educate the public about the deadliest drug threat our nation has faced. Because this film is so important, WEDU will collaborate with other Florida Public Media stations for statewide distribution.
This powerful short film was directed and edited by award-winning educator and filmmaker KT Curran of Wingspan Productions in Sarasota. Wingspan Productions is dedicated to identifying and addressing critical issues of our time.
As a WEDU member, you should take pride in knowing that your support enables us to raise awareness of this critical issue.
For additional information about The Fentanyl Project, including additional on-air dates and online viewing options, please visit wedu.org/fentanyl.
As always, I welcome your comments and feedback. Feel free to email me at paulgrove@wedu.org.

THANK YOU to our tiger-tastic friends and neighbors for attending WEDU PBS KIDS Be My Neighbor Day!
Thousands of friends and kind neighbors of WEDU PBS attended our Be My Neighbor Day event on March 23, 2024. It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood (even if there were a few short showers!) as guests joined in the fun with games, crafts, activities in English and Spanish, face painting, balloons, and inflatables; had the chance to Meet the Community Helpers including police, firefighters, and EMTs; toured the WEDU PBS TV Station including our studios and the Florida This Week set; rode the trolley around the neighborhood; read, sang, and danced with friends on a big stage; and best of all, got a chance to meet and greet PBS KIDS favorites Daniel Tiger and Katerina Kittycat from Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood!

WEDU PBS Board Member Spotlight: May 2024
Danielle Drummond
How long have you been serving on the WEDU Board of Directors? I have been serving on the Board for just over two years.
Why did you decide to join the Board?
I have always been impressed with WEDU, in particular the high quality programming and significant community impact. Serving on the Board has allowed me the opportunity to support the organization’s mission and values, which has been a very rewarding experience so far. I have learned so much that I did not know about this incredible organization.
What is your favorite PBS program?
If I had to pick one, I would say America’s Test Kitchen. I love to cook and am always looking for new ideas to try at home.

“Hobbies & passions: I am an avid runner, you can find me jogging in my neighborhood with my two rescue dogs most days of the week. I also love watching my two daughters in their athletic pursuits; they both play competitive volleyball and lacrosse, which keeps us quite busy. My husband and I have been making a point to play more golf in our remaining free time. My family loves to travel, and we have been fortunate to go on some amazing trips recently. I look forward to WEDU continuing to play a vital role in our local communities with its award-winning programming and community events. WEDU is uniquely positioned to provide both life-long education, as well as opportunities for engagement for all residents across our region. I am excited to see WEDU further expand its reach and impact in the future.

Legacy of Giving: Dr. Thomas Schotman

The Lake Wales community and a host of creatures, great and small, recently lost a legend in the veterinary field. Dr. Thomas Schotman (or Doc Tom if you knew him well), a longtime partner and revered veterinarian at the former Lake Wales Veterinary Hospital, passed away on November 12, 2023.
Dr. Schotman emigrated to the U.S. from Holland at the age of 8. He discovered his passion for helping animals while living in Crystal River and then pursued it at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. After his graduation, he established his practice in Lake Wales, where he treated over 500 species of animals, from hamsters and alligators to elephants, zebras, and lions. Dr. Schotman enjoyed the long-running program Nature on WEDU, with its extraordinary cinematography and passion for the natural world he loved. He also wanted to help others less fortunate and volunteered with HEART, a local nonprofit.
Lake Wales proclaimed February 10, Dr. Schotman Day, and we would agree with their sentiment, as he was a true WEDU Visionary.
