A Message from Claire O'Connor Solomon
Dear Friends of WEDU PBS,
This month, I’m honored to share that WEDU has received a gift from a true Renaissance man, Warren Loranger. By including WEDU in his estate planning, Warren’s gift provides a lasting legacy that can be shared by all of us to continue to enjoy WEDU as he did.
Warren was a child of the Great Depression and raised in Bay City, Michigan, by his grandmother, who only spoke French. His
mother worked in Detroit’s General Motors executive office, and Warren saw her only on weekends. He credits his time with the Boy Scouts and the Bay City YMCA for the valuable life skills and character traits he carried honorably throughout his life.
After graduating high school, Warren enlisted in the Army, serving in assignments that took him to Italy, even using an office building once home to Bruno Mussolini, brother of the Italian dictator, Benito. Upon completing his service, Warren began his business career in Detroit, including owning Southeast Michigan’s Pella Window distributorship. Along with his work, he enjoyed skiing at his home in Boyne City, Michigan and spending summers on Lake Huron in Ontario.
Warren loved Rick Steves’ travel programs, which brought back memories of his travels to Italy, Finland, France, Liechtenstein, and skiing in the Alps in Switzerland. He always carried a camera during his travels, so he especially enjoyed how Rick captured light, landscapes, and historic buildings in his programs. Nature’s stories of the natural world were important to Warren, and as a late-in-life artist, WEDU Arts Plus inspired his study and practice of painting, mainly abstract works.
After retiring to Englewood, Warren generously gave back to his community through gifts supporting the YMCA, Skye Academy, Venice Arts Center, Englewood Art Center, Cat Depot, Boys and Girls Clubs, and WEDU PBS.
His passion for lifelong discovery found a home at WEDU PBS. We are grateful for Warren’s generosity, foresight, and lasting legacy.
Sincerely,
Claire O’Connor Solomon
