A Message from Paul Grove
Dear Friends of WEDU PBS,
You never really know a person until you walk a mile in their uniform while singing the national anthem!
If you are interested in learning more, watch the EMMY® Award-winning, locally produced series WEDU Arts Plus as we feature a special local celebrity.
On February 2 at 8 p.m., we are excited to premiere Season 12 of Arts Plus our weekly local series devoted to stories about creative individuals and organizations in our community.
In the first episode, you'll get to know the Tampa Bay Lightning's popular national anthem singer, Sonya Bryson-Kirksey. Sonya's previous uniform was one with a chevron on her sleeve for the United States Air Force. Now she wears a Lightning hockey jersey and has become a game staple. Many fans consider her the team's good luck charm.
Singing is just one of her many talents. The retired Technical Sergeant also paints, crochets, and gardens. And she reads stories to young children on the Sonni Reading Project, a podcast she cocreated with her sister.
We live in an artistically vibrant region with many stories to tell. Arts Plus Host and Associate Producer Dalia Colón, Host Gabe Ortiz, Producer Farah Vickery, and Executive Producer Kristine Kelly share new segments monthly. Together the Arts Plus team has earned 10 Suncoast Regional EMMY® Awards, 2 Public Media Awards, 2 Griot Drum Awards, and 5 Telly Awards. Public television stations around the country have aired over 100 Arts Plus stories, reflecting the quality of local artists and the production.
We are grateful for the generous financial support of the Pinellas Community Foundation and proud of our partnership with St. Petersburg College, which has allowed students to produce segments for Arts Plus. WEDU has aired these segments as part of the collaboration.
Arts Plus is a definitive example of the power and reach of public media providing inspiring and surprising stories. Be sure to watch the season premiere of Arts Plus on February 2 at 8 p.m. and enjoy the story of Sonya Bryson-Kirksey!

WEDU PBS Staff Spotlight: February 2023
Dalia Colón
What she does at WEDU: I’m the associate producer and co-host of WEDU Arts Plus I identify local visual and performing artists to feature, interview them, and edit the interviews for broadcast. I also write some of the scripts and co-host the show, alternating with Gabe Ortiz. In addition, I serve as a liaison for art content between WEDU and other PBS stations. I also help with other local productions and represent WEDU by hosting fundraisers and other community events.
Time dedicated: I started as a freelance host in 2013 and joined the staff as a producer in 2014.
Hobbies & passions: I enjoy running, taking my kids to the library, and bargain-hunting at consignment shops—where I find most of my on-camera wardrobe. In addition, I’m the executive producer and host of a food podcast called The Zest Favorite PBS program: Sesame Street is my utopia.
“
“Art is problem-solving.” I’ve heard countless artists say this, and it’s true. There’s no right answer in art, so the arts provide a safe space to explore different ideas and perspectives. The arts make our world a better place.

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE
Ruthless: Monopoly’s Secret History
For generations, Monopoly has been America’s favorite board game, a love letter to unbridled capitalism and—for better or worse—the impulses that make our free-market society tick. But behind the myth of the game’s creation is an untold tale of theft, obsession and corporate doubledealing. Part detective story, part sharp social commentary and part pop-culture celebration,
Ruthless: Monopoly’s Secret History presents the fascinating true story of the game and those who created it. This program airs at 9 p.m. Monday, February 20 on WEDU

The Picture Taker
The vibrant life of Ernest Withers—civil rights photographer, and FBI informant— was anything but black and white. From his Memphis studio, Withers’ nearly 2 million images were a treasured record of Black history but his legacy was complicated by decades of secret FBI service revealed only
after his death. Was he a friend of the civil rights community, or enemy—or both?
This program airs at 11 p.m. Sunday, February 5 on WEDQ.
Outta the Muck Wade into the rich soil of Pahokee, Florida, a town on the banks of Lake Okeechobee. Beyond its football legacy, including sending over a dozen players to the NFL (like Anquan Boldin, Fred Taylor, and Rickey Jackson), the fiercely self-determined community tells their stories of Black achievement and resilience in the face of tragic storms and personal trauma. This program airs at 10 p.m. Monday, February 6 on WEDU and repeats at 11 p.m. Sunday, February 12 on WEDQ
EYES ON THE PRIZE
Series 1
Bridge to Freedom: 1965 (Part 6 of 6)
A decade of lessons is applied in the climactic and bloody march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. A major victory is won when the federal Voting Rights Bill passes, but civil rights leaders know they have new challenges ahead. This episode airs at 11 p.m. Tuesday, February 7 on WEDU.
Series 2
The Time Has Come: 1964-1966 (Part 1 of 8) After a decade-long cry for justice, a new call for power is heard in the civil rights movement. Malcolm X takes an eloquent nationalism to urban streets as a younger generation of black leaders listens. In the South, the fabric of the traditional movement changes. This episode airs at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 14 on WEDU
Two Societies: 1965-1958 (Part 2 of 8) Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference come north to help Chicago’s civil rights leaders in their nonviolent struggle against segregated housing. Their efforts pit them against Chicago’s powerful mayor, Richard Daley. When a series of marches through all-white neighborhoods draws violence, King and Daley negotiate with mixed results. In Detroit, a police raid in a black neighborhood sparks an urban uprising that lasts five days, leaving 43 people dead. The Kerner Commission finds that America is becoming “two societies, one black, one white, separate and unequal.” President Lyndon Johnson, who appointed the commission, ignores the report. This episode airs at 11 p.m. Tuesday, February 21 on WEDU
TAMPA TECHNIQUE: RISE, DEMISE, AND REMEMBRANCE OF CENTRAL AVENUE
Explore key racialized moments in Tampa’s history through the lens of Central Avenue as the city’s historically black business district. This program airs at 11 p.m. Monday, February 20 on WEDU

This episode airs at 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 21 on WEDU and repeats at 10 p.m. Thursday, February 23
