Dear Friends of WEDU PBS, WEDU’s success in 2022 was a team effort, and I appreciate your role on this team. We asked for financial support from you, from community partners, and from local businesses to empower the creation of great local stories that help us all better understand the world around us.

You came through for WEDU and we came through for the community.

I am thrilled to announce that WEDU PBS was honored this year with four Suncoast Regional EMMY® Awards from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The winners include three episodes of Greater Sarasota and Can We Talk? A Conversation About Antisemitism. This is a tremendous accomplishment and reinforces the work you support.

WEDU is unique in its ability to provide in-depth programs and produce hyper-local storytelling. These award-winning episodes told unique stories that invited viewers to learn new perspectives, respect our neighbors and understand different cultural experiences.

Greater Sarasota is a groundbreaking digital docuseries of short, intimate, and immersive stories designed to celebrate community and create new digital neighborhoods. The Community Foundation of Sarasota County, the Muriel O’Neil Fund, and the Joy McCann Foundation all partnered with the WEDU team and you to create a scalable series.

Can We Talk? A Conversation About Antisemitism is a powerful exploration of our local Jewish community featuring a nuanced and thoughtful discussion about stereotypes, discrimination, historical analysis, advocacy, and social reform. In addition to viewers like you, it was funded by local community partners and board members.

What he does at WEDU: I’m the Staff Accountant here at WEDU. What does that mean exactly? I record all of our bank transactions into our accounting system, I am responsible for entering month end closing journal entries, and month end bank reconciliations. I help with budget preparation and handle all check deposits.

Along with a bunch of other accounting-related work!

Time dedicated: I have worked at WEDU for 9 months.

Hobbies & passions: I’ve taken up golf as a hobby this last year and really enjoy getting out on the course when I have the time. I also love music and collect vinyl records; I currently have close to 500 records. My wife and I are also very involved with the in-home Bible fellowship we attend, and enjoy spending our time helping out with that. Other than that, I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, watching movies, and cheering on the Green Bay Packers!.

Favorite PBS program: My favorite PBS show is currently Endeavour, with All Creatures Great & Small coming in a close second.

Our Newest Visionary

Barton “Bart” Whisler is our most recent Visionary. Bart grew up in Largo. Following graduation, he moved to Tampa and worked as a software designer and information technology expert for a small construction company. Michael Whisler, brother of Bart, shared that Bart never married and lived a very private and uncomplicated life.

At one point, he studied for and became a pilot. His love of flying led to his attraction of video flight games and simulation. Michael said Premiere, WEDU’s monthly viewing magazine was always on a table by his chair. Bart found that through WEDU PBS, he could explore, learn and engage through programming without leaving his home.

The Picture Taker

The vibrant life of Ernest Withers—civil rights photographer, and FBI informant— was anything but black and white. Authored by Public Enemy’s Chuck D, who famously labeled hip hop as “the Black CNN” for bringing the stories of the street to the mainstream, this story will include personal testimonies of the MCs, DJs, graffiti artists, filmmakers, politicians and opinion formers who created and shaped its direction as it grew from an underground movement in the Bronx to the most popular music genre in the U.S. and the fastest growing genre in the world today. Featuring interviews from A-list talent like Killer Mike, Will.i.am, Monie Love, Ice-T, Roxanne Shante, MC Lyte and many more, this series paints a portrait of the unique relationship between hip hop and the political history of the United States.
