CONFIDENCE IN THE AUTOMOTIVE AFTERMARKET: A MIXED OUTLOOK
One of the key findings of the report is that while overall confidence in the automotive aftermarket sector remains steady, there are varying levels of optimism within the industry. Around 53% of business owners express high confidence in the future of their own businesses, up from 46% in 2022. This improvement in confidence can be attributed to the sector’s resilience, with many businesses actively working to adapt and innovate in response to changing market conditions.
However, confidence in the broader automotive industry is somewhat lower, with 44% of respondents expressing high confidence in the industry’s future, a slight decrease from 47% in 2022. Interestingly, younger business owners tend to be more optimistic, reflecting a generational shift in the approach to industry challenges and opportunities.
Despite the ongoing challenges, including inflation, cost-of-living pressures, and staffing shortages, the majority of business owners still view the sector as one with growth potential. This optimism is evident in the plans of many businesses to invest in expansion and improvements over the next year.

BUSINESS GROWTH AND STRATEGIC PRIORITIES
The 2024 survey reveals that 67% of New Zealand automotive business owners intend to grow their business or improve profitability within the next 12 months. For many, growth is a key focus, with businesses planning to increase their efficiency, boost profit margins, and invest in their workforce.
To achieve these growth objectives, business owners are placing particular emphasis on:
Improving operational efficiency:
Investing in workforce development: Upskilling existing staff and hiring new talent, particularly skilled workers and apprentices, to ensure businesses have the necessary expertise to meet customer demands and technological advancements.
Interestingly, the survey found that 55% of those planning to grow their businesses were highly confident in their own business’s future, while 47% expressed confidence in the overall industry outlook. This highlights that businesses pursuing growth are also more optimistic about their individual prospects, even if they have some reservations about the broader industry environment.

STAFF SHORTAGES: A PERSISTENT CHALLENGE
One of the most consistent challenges identified in the report is the ongoing shortage of skilled workers, including mechanics, auto electricians, and collision repair technicians. This issue has been a key concern for several years and continues to affect a significant portion of businesses in the automotive aftermarket sector.
In 2024, 38% of New Zealand business owners reported difficulties with resourcing, including unfilled positions and challenges in finding skilled staff. Panel and paint businesses were particularly affected, with nearly 60% of these businesses reporting staffing shortages. This issue is compounded by the aging workforce in the sector, with many experienced workers approaching retirement without clear succession plans in place.
The skills shortage poses a significant barrier to growth for many businesses, as they struggle to find the talent needed to expand operations and meet customer demand. To address this challenge, many business owners are investing in training and development, both for their existing staff and for apprentices. Upskilling initiatives are seen as crucial to ensuring the long-term sustainability of businesses in the sector.
COST-OF-LIVING PRESSURES AND CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR
In 2024, the cost-of-living crisis has emerged as one of the most pressing concerns for automotive workshop owners in New Zealand. The report found that 55% of business owners are facing challenges related to price-sensitive customers and rising operating costs.

Many customers are becoming more cautious with their spending, postponing vehicle maintenance or opting for lowercost alternatives in response to inflationary pressures. This shift in consumer behaviour is affecting businesses’ bottom lines, as they navigate reduced demand for routine services while also dealing with higher costs for parts and materials.
As one business owner noted, the delay in routine maintenance often leads to a backlog of more significant repairs down the line, which can lead to a more unpredictable workflow. The financial impact of these fluctuating demands is making it more difficult for businesses to maintain consistent cash flow and profitability.

Despite these challenges, many businesses are finding ways to manage costs and improve their cash flow. Strategies such as increasing labour rates, charging for diagnostic time, and reducing time discounts are helping businesses adapt to the changing market conditions. By diversifying revenue streams and focusing on high-value services, businesses can mitigate the effects of cost-of-living pressures and maintain profitability.
SUCCESSION PLANNING AND BUSINESS TRANSITION
Succession planning is a growing concern for many business owners in New Zealand’s automotive aftermarket sector. According to the report, 30% of businesses plan to retire within the next five years, while an additional 19% plan to retire within the next ten years. This demographic shift presents both challenges and opportunities for the industry, as many businesses look to transition to the next generation of leadership.
The report highlights that businesses with

well-prepared succession plans are more likely to secure a strong sale price, with some owners able to achieve a multiplier of 2.5 to 3 times their annual profit when selling. This underscores the importance of planning for the future and ensuring that businesses are ready for transition when the time comes.
THE ROAD AHEAD: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES
Looking forward, the automotive aftermarket industry in New Zealand faces several significant challenges, including inflationary pressures, staffing shortages, and changing consumer behaviour. However, the industry also presents numerous opportunities for growth and innovation.
With many businesses planning for expansion, workforce development, and improved efficiency, there is a clear sense of optimism within the sector. The introduction of the Capricorn Confidence Index provides valuable insights into the overall health of the industry, helping businesses, suppliers, and stakeholders understand market dynamics and plan for the future.

How to improve fuel economy and maximise horsepower
WHETHER YOUR CUSTOMER’S SUV HAS LOST ITS GIDDY-UP OR THEIR CAR’S FUEL ECONOMY IS AFFECTING THEIR PERSONAL ECONOMY, NEW VALVOLINE RESTORE & PROTECT PREMIUM FULL SYNTHETIC ENGINE OIL IS HERE TO HELP
With continuous use, Restore & Protect removes up to 99 per cent of harmful piston deposits when used as directed for four or more consecutive oil changes (based on adapted sequence IIIH testing), and prevents future deposit formation to restore engines to run like factory clean, helping to maximise horsepower and fuel efficiency.
WHERE DO DAMAGING DEPOSITS COME FROM?
Pistons move and control engine oil flow through the cylinders for lubrication and friction reduction. They also control gases generated during the combustion process as your engine burns petrol. Over time, when your engine runs, incomplete fuel combustion and the degradation of engine oil can cause deposits and varnish to form on metal surfaces, primarily the pistons.
THE PROBLEM WITH PISTON DEPOSITS
An engine contains many metal surfaces that constantly interact as the engine is running. Because pistons get most of that surfaceoil interaction, they also receive most of the deposits. Deposits and varnish inhibit oil film on metal surfaces and can prevent oil additives like detergents and friction modifiers from forming an effective layer of protection. What’s more, deposits insulate metal surfaces, so heat isn’t effectively removed, leading to higher engine temperatures that create more deposits.
If left unchecked, piston deposits rob your engine of fuel economy, horsepower, and engine life.
PISTON RINGS AND BLOW-BY EXPLAINED
Most internal combustion engines have pistons designed with three rings. The compression ring, at the top of the piston, keeps the gases, produced by burning fuel, in the combustion chamber. The second ring, known as the wiper ring, wipes the combustion wall to form a uniform oil layer. The bottom ring, or oil ring, wipes excess oil from the cylinder wall during piston movement, ensuring the excess oil is returned through ring openings to the oil reservoir in the engine block.
All three rings ride in grooves machined into the piston circumference. As deposits build
up inside the groove, the rings become stuck. The result? The seal loses effectiveness and allows excess oil to move up the piston, causing inefficient combustion, knocking, low speed pre-ignition and ineffective heat removal due to increased deposits.
It can also lead to blow-by, where combustion gases, a mixture of air and fuel, pass by the rings and infiltrate the crankcase and engine oil that’s moving around the cylinder walls, leading to sludge, corrosive wear, and a decrease in viscosity. As blowby compounds, the pistons and cylinders get dirtier, decreasing engine efficiency and performance.
VALVOLINE RESTORE & PROTECT RETURNS PISTONS TO FACTORY CLEAN, SO ENGINES RUN LIKE NEW
No matter the age of the vehicle, engine-killing deposits are building up on the pistons, and they’re not visible unless you take apart the engine. These harmful deposits dramatically affect performance, fuel economy and even the longevity of an engine.
Preventing damaging deposits isn’t enough, so Valvoline innovated a way to reverse them. Valvoline Restore & Protect is the first and only engine oil that returns pistons to factory clean. In fact, it removes up to 99 per cent of deposits when used as directed for four or more consecutive oil changes at standard maintenance intervals, based on adapted sequence IIIH testing.
GOODBYE DEPOSITS, HELLO CLEAN ENGINE
A clean engine is vital to minimising friction and maximising performance. Formulated with Liqui-Shield, Valvoline’s Restore & Protect helps by preventing deposits from forming in the future.
By now you may be wondering if deposits and varnish vanish or end up somewhere else, like in the oil filter. Valvoline Restore & Protect features proprietary Active Clean Technology that chemically dissolves deposits into microscopic pieces, so they’re suspended in the engine oil and leave the engine during your next oil change. There’s no impact on the performance or longevity of the oil filter. So long, deposits; don’t let the pistons hit you on the way out.
HOW DO WE KNOW IT WORKS?
In side-by-side tests, Valvoline compared deposit build-up of an industry-qualified GF-6A engine oil versus deposit build-up of Restore & Protect. After evaluating at 160,934km, Valvoline ran an additional 321,868km of testing. Results revealed cleaner engine parts at 483,000km than at 160,000km. Additionally, modified industry testing based on on-the-road driving habits confirmed the results.
WHEN SHOULD YOU USE VALVOLINE RESTORE & PROTECT?
Whether you own a newer vehicle or one with high kilometers, Restore & Protect works best if you use it consistently during each oil change interval, as recommended by your vehicle manufacturer. It’s also fully backwards compatible, allowing you to make the switch even if you’ve been using a different brand, as long as it’s the grade and oil type specified in your owner’s manual.
A BREAKTHROUGH IN ENGINE OIL TECHNOLOGY
Restore & Protect is a first-of-its-kind innovation; it isn’t an engine treatment or engine oil additive, it’s a fully formulated ILSAC GF-6A and API SP premium engine oil with 79-per-cent stronger wear protection vs ILSAC GF-6 standards.
For better fuel efficiency and longer engine life, introduce your customers to Valvoline Restore & Protect Premium Full Synthetic Engine Oil — the first engine oil to both actively restore engines and protect them against future damage.

For instance, collaborations between leading lubricant producers and EV manufacturers are accelerating the development of advanced thermal management fluids essential for battery longevity and performance. Companies like ExxonMobil, Shell, and TotalEnergies are acquiring specialised lubricant formulators and blending operations to diversify their product portfolios and improve supply chain efficiencies.
Additionally, the rise of private-label lubricant brands — often backed by major oil companies through joint ventures — has increased competitive pressure in the sector. These partnerships allow companies to leverage each other’s expertise in refining, formulation, and distribution, ensuring wider market reach while reducing production costs.
CHALLENGES AND FUTURE OUTLOOK
Despite positive growth trends, the industry faces challenges, including fluctuating raw material prices, regulatory pressures, and the need for continuous innovation to meet changing consumer demands. Additionally, geopolitical factors and global economic conditions can impact supply chains and market stability.
Looking ahead, the lubricants industry is poised for continued expansion, driven by technological advancements, a focus on sustainability, and the increasing complexity of machinery and automotive systems. Companies that invest in research and development, embrace environmental stewardship, and adapt to market changes are likely to thrive in this evolving landscape. Overall, the industry appears well-positioned to meet the demands of modern applications while addressing environmental and economic challenges, but it must remain agile and forward-thinking to capitalise on emerging opportunities and navigate the complexities of the global market.

Challenges in New Zealand’s aftermarket industry
AS
DETAILED IN CAPRICORN’S FIFTH
NATION
REPORT,
WORKSHOP
ANNUAL STATE OF THE
OWNERS ARE NAVIGATING A DIFFICULT BUSINESS LANDSCAPE, INFLUENCED BY A MIX OF EXTERNAL ECONOMIC PRESSURES AND ONGOING OPERATIONAL CONCERNS
COST-OF-LIVING PRESSURES: THE DOMINANT CONCERN
This year, the cost of living has emerged as the number one challenge for automotive workshop owners in New Zealand. According to the report, 55% of business owners now list price-sensitive customers and rising costs as their top concerns. This is a sharp shift from previous years, reflecting broader economic trends. In particular, customers are becoming more price-conscious, delaying vehicle servicing or opting for cheaper alternatives. This behaviour is compounded by the increased costs of automotive parts, which have risen substantially. The combination of higher prices and reduced consumer spending power is putting significant strain on workshop owners.
The impact of cost-of-living pressures is also visible in cashflow management and profitability, with many businesses struggling to maintain financial stability in a tight market. Nearly half of workshop owners reported difficulties managing costs and maintaining margins as a result of these economic conditions.
SKILLS SHORTAGE: A PERSISTENT ISSUE
Although cost-related challenges dominate the current landscape, the shortage of skilled workers remains a major concern for automotive businesses. The latest findings indicate that 38% of business owners face resourcing challenges, either due to unfilled positions or difficulty finding skilled staff. While this issue appears less pronounced than in previous years, it still affects a significant proportion of the industry.
Panel and paint businesses are particularly impacted, with nearly 60% reporting difficulty in filling skilled positions. As workshops continue to adapt to technological advancements and changing customer expectations, finding workers with the right mix of experience and technical expertise remains a persistent struggle. This issue is further exacerbated by the aging workforce in the sector, with many owners approaching retirement without clear succession plans in place.
LOOKING AHEAD: WORKFORCE AND SUCCESSION PLANNING
In fact, a large portion of the current workforce is nearing retirement, with 30% of
business owners planning to step down within the next five years, and an additional 19% in the next ten years. This creates a looming challenge for the industry, particularly in terms of workforce continuity and succession planning. Many business owners are considering buy-in options for their current staff, ensuring that the next generation of leaders can step in when the time comes.
James Candish, a Capricorn member who owns Village Valley Automotive in Ashurst, shared his experience of navigating this transition. When he purchased the business 17 years ago, it had been underperforming. Over time, he systemised the business and worked on its profitability, making it more attractive for eventual sale. According to James, businesses that are well-prepared for sale can fetch a multiplier of two and a half to three times their annual profit, underscoring the value of good succession planning.
MANAGING CUSTOMER EXPECTATIONS AND WORKSHOP OPERATIONS
As customer behaviour shifts, workshop owners must adapt to changing expectations. Many report that customers are
now more focused on the price of services, with some opting to delay maintenance or repairs to save money. While this can result in a temporary reduction in service bookings, it often leads to an increase in more significant repairs down the line. As one Capricorn member noted, this cycle can create fluctuating demand for services, making it harder for workshop owners to predict business volumes and maintain consistent cash flow.
Despite these challenges, some business owners are finding ways to innovate and adapt to the changing market. Adjusting labour rates, charging for diagnostic time, and focusing on high-value services like fault-finding are strategies being employed to maximise profitability. By turning diagnostic work into a profitable service, businesses can offset the impact of declining customer demand for routine maintenance.
CONFIDENCE IN THE FUTURE
While the immediate challenges are significant, there remains optimism within the industry. Automotive business owners are resilient and resourceful, continually finding ways to navigate difficult conditions. There is a clear sense that, despite the economic challenges and workforce shortages, the industry remains robust and adaptable.
New Zealand’s automotive aftermarket industry continues to grapple with significant challenges, from cost-of-living pressures to the ongoing skills shortage. However, the industry’s ability to innovate, adapt, and plan for the future offers a hopeful outlook. As economic conditions fluctuate and the workforce ages, the key to long-term success will lie in strategic planning, workforce development, and a continued focus on customer service and profitability.

Traction: The aim of the game
THE GEARBOX FACTORY RECENTLY ENHANCED THE PERFORMANCE OF A CHEVROLET TRUCK BY REPLACING ITS OPEN DIFFERENTIAL WITH AN EATON TRUETRAC; THIS UPGRADE INCLUDED INSTALLING NEW BEARINGS AND REPLACING THE CROWN AND PINION TO IMPROVE FINAL DRIVE RATIO, TRACTION AND EFFICIENCY
For this project, the Chevrolet’s 14-bolt differential was re-geared from the factory 3.72 ratio to a 3.42 ratio. This adjustment ensured smoother cruising at highway speeds while preserving effective torque delivery. Modifications like these consider factors such as tyre size and transmission ratios to maintain balanced performance and optimal engine RPM at 100kph.
Rebuilding differentials requires precision. Differentials are crucial for transferring power to the wheels and maintaining vehicle control, especially in challenging driving conditions. While limited-slip differentials (LSDs) are common, the Eaton Truetrac offered a definite mechanical advantage for this Chevrolet truck. Unlike LSDs, Truetrac units use gear-based engagement to lock both wheels on the same axle under torque, enhancing grip without relying on clutches or electronics.
A centred tooth contact pattern between the
pinion and crown gear is essential for durability, achieved by aligning the pinion depth to match the crown gear mesh. Modern vehicles often use spiral bevel gears for quieter operation and greater efficiency. Backlash (the clearance between meshing gears) is another critical factor. Proper backlash prevents binding and allows for thermal expansion during operation. While setup is crucial, the correct oil must be used which can be checked with each manufacturer.
Regular maintenance, such as changing differential oil every 40,000 to 60,000 kilometres, maximises performance and longevity. Regular maintenance also

Apprenticeship growth: a solution to the aftermarket skills shortage
THE AUTOMOTIVE AFTERMARKET INDUSTRY IN NEW ZEALAND CONTINUES TO GRAPPLE WITH A SKILLS SHORTAGE
Capricorn’s fifth annual State of the Nation Report records that the number of businesses employing apprentices has seen a significant increase. In 2022, only 38% of businesses employed apprentices, but by 2024, that figure has jumped to 70%, indicating a concerted effort to address the skills gap by bringing in new talent. The uptick in apprenticeship numbers is seen as a positive step in addressing the workforce shortages that many businesses are facing.
Capricorn CEO Brad Gannon stresses that it’s not enough to simply bring apprentices on board; the industry must also ensure that they are supported throughout their careers. “Beyond [recruitment], it is important we continue to support apprentices through their journey once they are part of the community, helping them to grow, learn new skills and develop. Apprentices are the future business
owners of tomorrow and the individuals who the automotive industry will be passed on to. Training apprentices is a solid path towards securing the long-term future of our industry.”
RISING STARS: RECOGNISING EXCELLENCE
To further encourage apprentices and acknowledge their hard work, Capricorn’s Rising Stars Apprentice of the Year Award, launched in 2018, aims to recognise and reward outstanding apprentices who show initiative, dedication, and a strong passion for the automotive sector. This initiative serves not only to reward individual achievement but also to inspire others to consider and stay in the automotive aftermarket.
Jeremy Drabsch, who won the Rising Stars Award in 2019, has already transitioned from apprentice to business owner. In 2023, Jeremy
The growing role of women in the aftermarket industry
ACCORDING TO CAPRICORN’S FIFTH ANNUAL STATE OF THE NATION REPORT, WOMEN CONTINUE TO PLAY A CRUCIAL YET OFTEN OVERLOOKED ROLE IN NEW ZEALAND’S AUTOMOTIVE AFTERMARKET INDUSTRY
While they are predominantly employed in administrative, office, and retail positions, the number of women taking on more technical and skilled roles is on the rise. Recent data published in Capricorn’s State of the Nation report highlights that women now make up 8% of all qualified mechanics — up from just 3% in 2022. Furthermore, 16% of automotive aftermarket businesses are employing female apprentices, a notable increase from 12% last year.
This shift is an important step towards diversifying the workforce and addressing the ongoing skills shortage in the sector. The increasing number of women in technical roles is essential in helping the industry tap into a broader talent pool, which is critical for its future growth.
Lydia Stjepanovic, Capricorn Member Director for NSW/ACT, stresses that the
automotive sector offers a range of career paths, many of which don’t require handson work with vehicles. From administrative roles to customer service positions, women are making a significant impact in shaping the direction of small businesses within the automotive aftermarket.
Stjepanovic emphasises that women can bring unique strengths to the automotive industry, particularly in customer service and business management. Women are often seen as particularly adept at building strong relationships with customers, understanding technical problems, and providing solutions that meet community needs. As the industry continues to evolve, these skills will only become more valuable.
It is also crucial to encourage women to view themselves as business owners and leaders, rather than just supportive figures behind the

started his own automotive business, a significant milestone in his career. Reflecting on the value of the Rising Stars award, Jeremy notes that the training he received, particularly through a course with industry expert Rachael Evans, provided him with the necessary tools to launch his business. “The information I gained through the course ended up being very valuable when I decided to start my own business. It gave me a strong foundation from which I could build,” Jeremy explains.
The apprentices of today will be the leaders of tomorrow. Continuing to support and encourage apprentices is crucial to strengthening New Zealand’s automotive aftermarket and ensuring its long-term viability. While the rise in apprenticeship numbers signals positive change in the industry, the focus must remain on providing ongoing support and opportunities for growth, ensuring that apprentices are fully equipped to take on leadership roles in the future.
scenes. Many wives and partners of business owners, for instance, play a pivotal role in the success and growth of automotive companies. While progress has been made, industry leaders must continue to break down the barriers and stereotypes that discourage women from entering technical fields. More mentorship, training programs, and a focus on workplace inclusion can help encourage women to pursue careers in all areas of the automotive industry. Furthermore, by recognising and supporting women in both visible and behindthe-scenes roles, the automotive aftermarket sector can continue to thrive and grow. As more women enter the industry, the diversity of talent, skills, and perspectives will help drive innovation and success across the sector.

MTA alliance pushes for stronger retail crime measures
THE MOTOR TRADE ASSOCIATION (MTA) AND THE DAIRY AND BUSINESS OWNERS GROUP (DBOG) HAVE FORMED SAFER SHOPS, AN ALLIANCE AIMED AT PUSHING FOR STRONGER GOVERNMENT ACTION AGAINST RETAIL CRIME.
The group will campaign for increased police intervention, tougher penalties for offenders, and additional security measures for service stations, dairies, and liquor stores. Retail crime has been a growing concern, with violent incidents leaving business owners and workers vulnerable. MTA Chief Executive Lee Marshall says these businesses are under constant threat.
“These retail businesses are under constant threat of crime. Violent crime which leaves hard-working Kiwis injured physically and scarred mentally, and theft which threatens their existence. These important businesses, their people and their customers will now have a strong voice dedicated to their protection –Safer Shops,” Marshall says.
The Safer Shops alliance acknowledges that while some steps have been taken to address retail crime, there is still significant work to
do. Both organisations argue that too much responsibility is placed on retailers to protect themselves, rather than on the Government and police to provide adequate security.
MTA Head of Advocacy James McDowall says both groups have already pushed for change individually, but by working together, they hope to have a greater impact. “Both our organisations have worked hard to convince the Government there needs to be new thinking and action – and we’ve achieved a lot,”
McDowall says
DBOG Chair Manish Thakkar points to the case of Janak Patel, who was killed while defending his business, as a tragic example of the risks faced by small retailers: “We are committed to making sure no one else has to suffer a similar tragedy. Everyone has the right to work safely and go home to loved ones. Safer Shops will be the only coordinated voice
Nissan and Honda explore potential business integration
NISSAN AND HONDA HAVE SIGNED A MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING (MOU) TO EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITY OF BUSINESS INTEGRATION THROUGH A JOINT HOLDING COMPANY
Focusing on next-generation softwaredefined vehicle (SDV) platforms, Nissan and Honda will conduct joint research into fundamental technologies essential for vehicle intelligence and electrification. The goal is to accelerate innovation and improve their ability to respond to rapid technological changes in the industry.
Both Nissan and Honda acknowledge that the automotive landscape is shifting rapidly. Factors such as technological advancements, stricter environmental regulations, and evolving consumer preferences are reshaping the market. In this context, the companies see a potential business integration as a way to maintain global competitiveness and enhance their ability to develop new products and services.
By combining resources, including expertise in electrification, human capital, and advanced
vehicle technology, Nissan and Honda hope to create synergies that will drive long-term value. They also see this collaboration as an opportunity to strengthen Japan’s industrial base and position themselves as leaders in global mobility.
If the integration moves forward, Nissan and Honda would bring together their four-wheel vehicle businesses, while also incorporating Honda’s motorcycle and power products divisions. This could enhance product development capabilities, create cost efficiencies,
of dairies, liquor stores and service stations to advocate for change.”
As an initial move, Safer Shops is seeking meetings with Police Minister Mark Mitchell and Police Commissioner Richard Chambers to discuss ways to improve protections for at-risk retailers.DBOG Vice Chair Ash Parmar says he is optimistic about working with the Government: “Mark Mitchell is a good man and Minister who understands the problems we face. We look forward to working with him and Commissioner Chambers to keep Kiwis safe and prevent another tragedy.”
Safer Shops aims to keep pressure on policymakers to prioritise retail crime prevention and ensure affected businesses receive the protection they need.

and allow the brands to offer more innovative mobility solutions.
The companies believe that by working together, they can deliver products that neither could achieve alone. However, they emphasise that discussions are still at an early stage, with no final decision made.
Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida described the discussions as a “pivotal moment” that could shape the future of both companies. “If realised, I believe that by uniting the strengths of both companies, we can deliver unparalleled value to customers worldwide who appreciate our respective brands,” he said.
As Nissan and Honda continue discussions, the industry will be watching closely to see whether this collaboration leads to a full business integration, with further direction

From workshop to wholesaler: Automotive Supplies Group NZ
WITH THE NEW YEAR COMES THE TIME TO REFLECT ON ONE’S CAREER; ONE INDUSTRY COUPLE HAS DONE JUST THAT, TRACING A GRADUAL TRANSITION FROM WORKING ON CARS TO IMPORTING PARTS ON A LARGE SCALE
Blair Rosson’s journey in the motor trade began humbly in 1996 at Kapiti Auto Electrical Ltd, sweeping floors and working as an apprentice auto electrician under Steve Miller. This well-regarded Paraparaumu workshop exposed Blair to a wide variety of vehicles, from cars to marine and commercial projects. Over time, he honed his skills in other workshops across Wellington and Manawatu, preparing him for the next phase of his career.
In 2008, Blair and his wife, Junell, opened Blair’s Auto Electrical Ltd on the Kapiti Coast. The thriving business provided a solid foundation for their young family. However, managing a workshop revealed significant gaps in the supply chain for auto electrical components, prompting Blair to explore alternative solutions.
By 2011, Blair began sourcing cost-effective parts overseas for alternators and starter motors, initially to support his own workshop.
Recognising the potential, Blair turned this side venture into a full-fledged distribution business. Automotive Supplies Group NZ (ASG NZ) was officially established in 2014, combining Blair’s technical expertise with his growing knowledge of importing and marketing. “When customers call for a product, there’s a good chance I’ve diagnosed and fitted it myself. It’s about getting it right the first time,” Blair explains.
In late 2024, Blair and Junell sold their workshop to focus exclusively on wholesaling. This shift allowed ASG NZ to expand its footprint, establishing three strategic stock locations across New Zealand to ensure timely access to parts. Their user-friendly website, as-parts.nz, has become the core of their operations, offering over 9000 in-stock items and access to an additional 50,000 products via weekly orders from their European suppliers. The site’s vehicle registration lookup tool further
simplifies the process for customers.
As New Zealand’s official distributor for brands like AS-PL, +Plus Line, HIBANA ignition coils, MTE Thomson oxygen sensors, ARCTI-Car AC systems, and Vierol/Vemo, ASG NZ caters to a wide range of auto electrical needs. Their inventory includes genuine, aftermarket, and reconditioned parts, as well as specialised test equipment for modern ECU-controlled alternators and emerging technologies like 48-volt systems.
As a foundation supplier for the Blackfern Co-Operative since 2016, Blair and Junell value building strong industry relationships while providing practical, high-quality solutions.
ASG NZ offers Blackfern members exclusive pricing and reward points, underscoring their commitment to supporting local businesses. Blackfern members can earn reward points on purchases and enter a February draw for 10,000 points. Details are available at blackfern.coop or by calling 027 252 2533.

IIHS has introduced stricter criteria for 2024, emphasising improved rear-seat passenger protection and enhanced pedestrian crash avoidance systems. The updated moderate front overlap test now includes a second dummy positioned behind the driver to assess rear-seat safety.
Hyundai Motor Group’s strong performance in this year’s awards reflects its focus on safety innovation and its efforts to meet increasingly rigorous crash protection standards. A full list of award winners and safety ratings can be seen at IIHS.org.

Tyrewise releases first performance report
NEW ZEALAND’S REGULATED TYRE STEWARDSHIP SCHEME, TYREWISE, HAS RELEASED ITS FIRST PERFORMANCE REPORT, COVERING THE EARLY MONTHS OF IMPLEMENTATION, OUTLINING KEY ACHIEVEMENTS, CHALLENGES, AND FUTURE GOALS AS THE SCHEME ESTABLISHES ITSELF AS A MAJOR INITIATIVE IN MANAGING END-OF-LIFE TYRES (ELTS) ACROSS THE COUNTRY
The reporting period covers July to October 2024, including two months before the scheme became operational, its first month of operations (September), and expectations for October.
A major milestone in this period was the full launch of Tyrewise’s software system, designed to track tyre movements and financial transactions. The system records collections, payments to transporters and processors, and provides real-time data on the Tyrewise website.
COLLECTION AND TRANSPORTATION: A STRONG START
Tyrewise aims to ensure that ELTs are collected and processed efficiently, reducing illegal dumping and promoting sustainable disposal methods.
Key collection figures in the first four weeks of operation in September were:
• 3,500+ collection jobs recorded
• 384,000 tyres collected
• 4,200 tonnes of ELTs processed
Since the initial reporting period, the live data now shows over 1 million tyres collected, indicating rapid uptake of the scheme.
The national collection network includes:
• 2,570 tyre retailers and fitters
• 132 fleet owners/operators
• 89 vehicle scrap dealers
• 60 public collection sites
• 14 transport companies operating across all regions
These figures demonstrate a strong initial response from industry participants, though ongoing monitoring will be needed to ensure coverage and efficiency.
PROCESSING AND RECYCLING CHALLENGES
While collection has ramped up quickly, tyre processing volumes remain in the early stages. No eligible processing claims were received in the reporting period, as processors and manufacturers were still working through stock accumulated before the scheme launched.
A key challenge identified is a gap in processing capacity, particularly in the South Island and for large off-road tyres. Tyrewise expects that financial incentives and direct investment will help expand processing options over time.
Additionally, seven processors and one manufacturer have registered with the scheme so far. The development of new local end-markets remains a priority, with verified foreign endmarkets continuing to play a role in the interim.
One promising area for market growth is the use of recycled tyre material in roading. Tyrewise has commissioned WSP to update a previous report on this opportunity, and a technical advisory group is exploring its potential applications.
INDUSTRY AWARENESS AND COMPLIANCE
Ahead of the scheme’s launch, Tyrewise
contacted over 4000 businesses expected to be affected by the new regulations. Awareness campaigns included advertising in automotive trade media and on radio, as well as distributing posters and counter cards to registered participants.
During the reporting period:
• 5,032 service desk tickets were received, with 4,991 resolved
• 3,281 calls were handled via the Tyrewise support line
• Four e-newsletters were sent to industry partners, with a 63% open rate
COMPLIANCE AND REGULATORY CHECKS
A key responsibility of Tyrewise is ensuring that businesses comply with the scheme’s regulations. The Ministry for the Environment requires evidence of site visits and assessments to confirm compliance.
By early October 2024, Tyrewise had conducted 3,840 field visits or calls to potential participants. Field representatives focus on educating businesses about their obligations, particularly the requirement to correctly disclose the tyre stewardship fee to customers.
GOVERNMENT OVERSIGHT AND FUTURE AUDITS
The Ministry for the Environment is responsible for auditing the scheme to ensure that Auto Stewardship New Zealand (ASNZ) and the scheme manager, 3R Group, are meeting their responsibilities. These audits will assess overall compliance and identify areas for improvement.
NEXT STEPS FOR TYREWISE
While the scheme is still in its early stages, Tyrewise has made significant progress in setting up a nationwide collection and tracking system for ELTs. Key focus areas moving forward include:
• Expanding processing capacity, especially in the South Island
• Developing local end-markets, particularly for roading applications
• Ensuring continued compliance and participant education
• Monitoring budget allocations and financial sustainability
With over 1 million tyres already collected, Tyrewise is positioned to make a lasting impact on how New Zealand manages end-of-life tyres. Ongoing industry participation and government oversight will be crucial to its long-term success.

Find the leaks with Jayair
Available through CoolDrive Auto Parts, Jayair’s LeakXpose solution is incredibly effective in finding leaks in automotive air-conditioning systems. The LeakXpose N2/H2 solution comprises a non-flammable mixture of 95 per cent nitrogen and 5 per cent hydrogen. When the system is pressurised with the LeakXpose trace gas, due to hydrogen’s small molecular size and low density, even the smallest leaks can be found with a suitable electronic leak detector. Honda unveils 0 Series EV prototypes at CES 2025
AT CES 2025, HONDA INTRODUCED TWO NEW ELECTRIC VEHICLE PROTOTYPES — THE HONDA 0 SALOON AND HONDA 0 SUV, PLANNED TO BEGIN ROLLING
The Honda 0 Saloon, based on the concept shown at CES 2024, features a low, sporty design with a surprisingly spacious interior. It is built on a dedicated EV platform and follows Honda’s ‘Thin, Light, and Wise’ approach, which prioritises efficiency, reduced weight, and advanced digital technology.
A key feature of the Saloon is its integration of Honda’s Level 3 automated driving system, enabling hands-free driving in certain conditions. The vehicle will also utilise ASIMO OS to personalise the driving experience.
The Honda 0 SUV, a mid-size electric SUV, is designed for maximum interior space and visibility. The SUV will feature ASIMO OS for real-time system updates and a digital user experience. It also incorporates stabilisation technology derived from Honda’s robotics research, enhancing handling on various road surfaces.
ASIMO OS, named after Honda’s humanoid robot, will be the core software platform for the Honda 0 Series. It integrates environmental awareness, user interaction, and autonomous control, enabling over-the-air updates to improve vehicle functionality after purchase. The system manages automated driving, driver assistance, and infotainment, offering a personalised experience while improving safety and driving comfort.
Honda has been developing automated driving (AD) technology since 2021, when it became the first automaker to introduce Level 3 AD in a production vehicle. The Honda 0
OUT IN 2026

Series will expand the use of hands-free driving, starting with traffic congestion on highways. Using AI from Helm.ai, Honda’s system learns from real-world driving scenarios with minimal data. It also incorporates cooperative AI, improving how the vehicle interacts with other road users.
To support the Honda 0 Series’ centralised electronic architecture, Honda is working with Renesas Electronics to develop a highperformance system-on-chip (SoC). This new chip will consolidate multiple vehicle control functions into a single core ECU, improving processing efficiency while minimising power consumption.
The Honda 0 Series represents a shift toward software-defined vehicles, combining electrification, automation, and AI-driven personalisation. With the first models launching in 2026, Honda aims to redefine the EV experience by integrating advanced technology and smart energy solutions.
