Ready to grow your workshop’s hybrid and EV service offering?

INFINITEV, AN OEM-RECOGNISED LEADER IN AFTERMARKET HYBRID AND EV BATTERY SOLUTIONS, IS SUPPORTING WORKSHOPS WITH ITS AUTHORISED FITTER PROGRAMME, OFFERING ACCESS TO HIGH-QUALITY REPLACEMENT BATTERIES, TECHNICAL SUPPORT, AND CUSTOMER REFERRALS

Infinitev provides premium aftermarket hybrid batteries that deliver a range of advantages over OEM replacements. New aftermarket hybrid batteries from Infinitev are cost-effective, with pricing up to 20% lower than OEM alternatives. Additionally, trade discounts are available for bulk orders, making it an economical choice for workshops.

One of the key benefits of Infinitev’s batteries is their plug-and-play installation. The batteries arrive fully assembled, meaning there’s no need for additional components or rewiring. This significantly streamlines the process, saving mechanics up to 45 minutes per installation compared to some OEM battery packs.

In terms of design and reliability, Infinitev’s batteries can outperform OEM. They are built with advanced cooling technology, which ensures better temperature management, helping to extend the battery’s lifespan. Furthermore, the short lead times associated with Infinitev’s product delivery mean less vehicle downtime, allowing workshops to offer

quicker turnarounds for customers.

With coverage for 99% of hybrid models, including grey imports, Infinitev provides a solution that is practical for nearly any workshop. This broad compatibility, combined with an industry-leading three-year, 200,000 km warranty, gives workshops added confidence. The batteries are also backed by New Zealand’s only NTRO-certified remanufacturing process, ensuring the highest standards of quality and performance.

THE AUTHORISED FITTER PROGRAMME: MORE WORK FOR YOUR WORKSHOP

Infinitev’s Authorised Fitter programme lets workshops gain access to a steady flow of customer referrals, helping them expand their hybrid battery services without additional marketing effort. Infinitev does not install batteries directly; instead, they refer customers to their network of fitters, ensuring more jobs for partner workshops.

Key benefits of joining the programme include:

• Customer Referrals – Infinitev directs hybrid vehicle owners to authorised fitters, creating new business opportunities.

• Technical Support – A dedicated hotline (0800 360 111) provides direct access to expert advice for trouble-free installations.

• Warranty Labour Reimbursement – If a battery is found to be faulty, Infinitev not only replaces it but also compensates mechanics for labour costs.

• Retail & Branding Support – Fitters gain access to marketing materials, signage, and retail support, helping position their workshop as a trusted hybrid specialist.

A SMARTER, FASTER INSTALLATION

One of the key innovations of Infinitev’s batteries is their ‘Long Pack’ design. Unlike OEM ‘Short Packs’, which require additional components to be installed, Infinitev’s plugand-play system comes with pre-installed components like cooling fans, relay blocks, and ECU modules, which eliminates high-voltage safety risks for mechanics and cuts installation time in half.

GET ON BOARD

Hybrid battery replacement is a service growing in demand, and Infinitev makes it easy and profitable for workshops to take part. By signing up as an Authorised Fitter, mechanics gain access to trade pricing, technical support, and a steady stream of customer referrals. Infinitev is backed by Amotiv, New Zealand’s largest wholesaler of automotive parts and accessories.

BYD announces the five-minute charge

CHINESE AUTOMAKER BYD HAS UNVEILED A GROUNDBREAKING ADVANCEMENT IN ELECTRIC VEHICLE (EV) CHARGING TECHNOLOGY, INTRODUCING A SYSTEM CAPABLE OF DELIVERING UP TO 1,000 KILOWATTS (KW) OF POWER

The innovation enables vehicles to gain approximately 400 kilometres of range within a mere five minutes of charging, effectively addressing one of the most significant challenges hindering widespread EV adoption: charging time.

BYD’S

TECHNOLOGICAL LEAP

BYD, which stands for ‘Build Your Dreams’, has positioned itself as a leader in the EV sector. The company’s latest development, the ‘Super e-Platform’, operates at a 1000-volt electrical architecture, surpassing the 800-volt systems found in many current EVs. This platform facilitates charging speeds that can add two kilometres of range per second, culminating in an impressive 400 kilometres in just five minutes.

INDUSTRY REACTIONS AND

MARKET

IMPACT

The introduction of BYD’s ultra-fast charging technology has elicited significant attention within the automotive industry, particularly concerning its potential impact on competitors like Tesla. Tesla’s Supercharger network currently offers charging speeds up to 250kW, which adds approximately 277 kilometres of range in 15 minutes. BYD’s system provides

a charging rate that is not only faster but also more convenient, closely mirroring the refuelling experience of traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.

This advancement positions BYD as a formidable competitor in the global EV market, challenging established players and potentially altering market dynamics. The company’s rapid growth is evident, with sales figures nearly doubling those of Tesla in recent periods.

ADDRESSING TECHNICAL CHALLENGES

Achieving such high charging speeds necessitates overcoming significant technical hurdles, including managing heat generation and ensuring battery longevity. BYD has addressed these challenges by reducing internal battery resistance and integrating advanced silicon carbide power chips. These innovations allow the batteries to handle high voltages without compromising safety or performance.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND FUTURE OUTLOOK

To support this technology, BYD plans to construct a network of over 4000 high-capacity charging stations across China. These stations are

designed to provide the necessary infrastructure for ultra-fast charging, ensuring that users can quickly and conveniently recharge their vehicles. The implementation of such a vast charging network not only enhances the practicality of EVs but also stimulates further advancements in charging technology. As more manufacturers strive to match BYD’s capabilities, consumers stand to benefit from improved charging infrastructure and reduced charging times, reinforcing the shift towards sustainable transportation.

BROADER IMPLICATIONS FOR THE EV INDUSTRY

BYD’s innovation will likely serve as a catalyst for change within the industry, prompting a reevaluation of existing charging technologies and infrastructure. This innovation, combined with BYD’s increasing market share and consistent push for improved EV infrastructure, demonstrates a strategic approach that’s paying off. The recent shift in European market dynamics further underscores BYD’s rising dominance, with Chinese-owned brands surpassing Tesla in sales during February. While Tesla faces challenges like declining market share and the distraction of external ventures, BYD is steadily growing its footprint, benefiting from both superior technology and an aggressive expansion strategy. The company’s approach underscores the importance of integrating technological advancements with consumer-centric solutions, addressing real-world challenges associated with EV adoption, as its recent market trends reflect.

From trail riding to trailblazing

MITO BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT ASHLEIGH TELFORD, A FORKLIFT TECHNICIAN AT AB EQUIPMENT, IS FORGING HER OWN PATH IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

Growing up around four-wheel drives and motorbikes, Ashleigh Telford naturally gravitated toward the automotive world. Eager to learn how to repair the vehicles she loved, she enrolled in a pre-trade course, and it didn’t take long for her to realise she had found where she was meant to be. “I wanted to be able to fix things myself, so I did my pre-trade course and loved it. After coming out of that, I decided this is what I want to do,” Ashleigh says.

Ashleigh joined AB Equipment from another workshop, where she was doing unpaid work

experience two days a week. Immediately impressed with her motivation and ability, the company quickly offered her an apprenticeship, and she has since gone from strength to strength.

Upon completing her New Zealand Certificate in Heavy Automotive Engineering, Ashleigh became the first female apprentice to achieve the qualification in its entirety through AB Equipment. While she doesn’t dwell on the magnitude of this accomplishment, both she and her employer take great pride in her achievement and its wider impact. “I do what I do because I love it, but I know

everyone’s super proud of me and what I have achieved. But I would love to help other women get into the trade as well,” she says.

While the automotive industry remains heavily male-dominated, Ashleigh has found strong support from her colleagues and AB Equipment as a whole. “I have had amazing support from my workmates and AB Equipment. I can be who I am, and I can ask questions at any time.”

In addition to the backing of her workmates and employer, Ashleigh speaks highly of the support she received from MITO throughout her studies. She makes special mention of her Training Advisor, Brian Scott, whom she describes as a vital resource along the way. “MITO has been great, especially the support from my training advisor. He’s always made it clear that he’s only a phone call away, and he’s proved to be just that.”

With aspirations of moving into a leadership position, Ashleigh is showing no signs of slowing down. After being awarded a MITO Business Scholarship in 2024, she recently began working towards the New Zealand Certificate in Business (First Line Management). “I’m really excited to have the opportunity to get something else under my belt. I think something good will come of it, as I do see myself in a leadership position in the future,” she says.

Ashleigh’s journey is one of passion, perseverance, and breaking new ground. Through hard work and a willingness to learn, she has carved out a path for herself and hopes her story will inspire other women to do the same. “You can do anything you want. Do some work experience and get a feel for what you might be doing. I did work experience, and after seeing what the industry was like, I thought it was the best thing in the world.”

Ashleigh’s is one of the MITO success stories profiled on mito.org.nz/get-qualified/ success-stories

With over 85 years of experience, Ryco is one of the oldest filtration companies in Australasia. They’ve been able to stand the test of time due to their ability to adapt new and exciting technologies to benefit drivers everywhere, from the racetrack to the highway.

Ryco filters will always meet OE standards, with upgrade filters such as the Ryco SynTec® range and Ryco NanoCel™ range

exceeding OE standards.

Their Official Filtration Partnership with the Supercars Championship is a testament to the work put into their filtration development. Now drivers everywhere can

use the same filters the professionals do, with the GEN3 Control Part technology being translated into passenger vehicle filtration.

So, when your customers want the best before their next drive, make sure they’re Ryco Ready.

Corghi balancerswheel

DISTRIBUTED IN NEW ZEALAND BY AUTOMASTER, CORGHI, AN ITALIAN MANUFACTURER WITH A LONGSTANDING REPUTATION IN THE AUTOMOTIVE EQUIPMENT INDUSTRY, OFFERS A RANGE OF WHEEL BALANCERS TAILORED TO MEET ALL WORKSHOP NEEDS

EM9250 PREMIUM

The EM 9250 Premium features automatic wheel diameter and distance input. Its open design provides easy access for cleaning and weight placement, with optional upgrade to the Xline model that includes a laser line for adhesive weights, an inside wheel LED light, and auto width measurement via sonar — all in a compact, space-saving design.

EM9550 PLUS LASERLINE

The EM9550 wheel balancer features a digital display and automatic wheel size detection for fast, accurate, and user-friendly operation. It uses a manual quick ring nut for wheel clamping and an automatic data arm that detects offset, diameter, and width via AWD sonar. The Fast Selection Program (FSP) auto-activates the correct balancing mode, eliminating manual input. Once spun, the wheel stops and locks at the correct position for weight application, guided by an integrated LED light and laser pointer. The LaserBlade system helps position weights

precisely inside alloy rims, while the ‘Hidden Weight’ function conceals adhesive weights for a clean finish. A patented space-saving wheel guard allows placement against a wall and accommodates wheels up to 44” in diameter.

EM9580 PLUS LASERLINE TOUCHSCREEN

The Corghi EM9580 features a manual quick nut while the EM9580C features an automatic electromechanical wheel clamping system, which cuts operating times and increases centring precision. A touchscreen monitor and automatic wheel size detection for fast, accurate, and easy operation. The intuitive graphic interface simplifies program selection, while the FSP (Fast Selection Program) function auto-activates the correct balancing mode. A new digital gauge detects diameter and distance, and the integrated LaserBlade pointer ensures precise weight placement inside alloy rims. The system automatically brakes and positions the wheel for

weight application, with an LED light illuminating the work area. A weight-saving program, including the ‘Less Weight’ function, reduces counterweight use by 30% and job times by 20%, improving costefficiency and environmental impact. The balancer also helps minimise road noise by optimising tyre positioning on the rim. Its patented space-saving wheel guard allows placement against a wall and accommodates wheels up to 44” in diameter.

EM9780C PLUS TOUCHSCREEN & CONTACTLESS

At the forefront of Corghi’s offerings is the EM9780C Plus Touchscreen & Contactless wheel balancer. This model emphasises a hands-free approach, automatically obtaining all wheel dimensions without manual intervention. Operators simply close the safety hood to initiate the balancing process, which reduces spin and diagnostic times, making it one of the fastest options available. The integrated LED illuminator aids in rim cleaning and precise weight application, while the internal laser pointer indicates the exact position for adhesive weights. Additionally, the ‘Hidden Weight’ function allows for the division of external balancing weights into two equivalent weights hidden behind the spokes, maintaining the wheel’s aesthetic appeal. Add the optional run-out sonar for high-precision measurement of radial and lateral wheel run-out.

BEV & hybrid training available at GPC’s industry hub

GPC’S WORLD-LEADING FACILITY TO SHARE KNOWLEDGE AND PROVIDE CUSTOMISED TRAINING, IN COLLABORATION WITH UNITEC, FOR NZ INDUSTRY REQUIREMENTS IS OPEN TO ALL WORKSHOPS

GPC’s state-of-the-art training facility in Penrose, Auckland, which opened last year, is a centre purpose-built to meet the growing demand for specialised training on BEVs, hybrids, and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). With half of all used vehicle imports now hybrid or electric, workshops are increasingly encountering electrified vehicles on their hoists.

Spanning 350 square metres, the facility offers a mix of hands-on and digital learning. It accommodates small group workshops as well as theatre-style training sessions for up to 150 participants. The training centre also integrates cutting-edge audio-visual tools and online learning capabilities, allowing access to international expertise and digital course resources.

With around 10 per cent of New Zealand’s current vehicle fleet now electrified, workshops that don’t adapt to this technology risk limiting their service offerings. The growing market share of EVs and hybrids presents a significant opportunity for businesses that invest in upskilling their staff. By undertaking training at GPC’s facility, workshops can ensure they have the capabilities to safely service and repair a broader range of vehicles.

Key reasons to upskill in EV servicing include:

• Expanding the range of vehicles your workshop can service.

• Avoiding lost business by adapting to the rise in hybrid and BEV ownership.

• Meeting industry safety standards, ensuring all staff are appropriately trained.

• Understanding the risks associated with highvoltage (HV) components, which can pose a

serious hazard if mishandled.

The MTA has recognised the importance of proper training in this area, endorsing the GPC Fundamental EV Course as a key health and safety resource for workshops, saying, “The GPC Fundamental EV Course aligns with the MTA Health & Safety Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for EVs, making it the ideal foundation course for anyone looking to build essential EV safety knowledge. This course is a must-do for everyone, ensuring they have the skills and awareness needed to be safe around electrified vehicles. Endorsed by MTA sector managers, it provides the critical safety training required to navigate the evolving automotive landscape with confidence.”

Mazda introduces ‘Lean Asset Strategy’ to drive electrification with efficiency

MAZDA MOTOR CORPORATION HAS UNVEILED

ITS

‘LEAN ASSET STRATEGY’, A NEW INITIATIVE AIMED AT STREAMLINING ELECTRIFICATION EFFORTS WHILE MAXIMISING THE USE OF EXISTING ASSETS

Mazda is focusing on a multi-solution approach to meet diverse customer needs and evolving environmental regulations. Under its 2030 Management Policy, Mazda sees this decade as the ‘dawn of electrification’ and is committed to developing a sustainable, cost-efficient transition. The Lean Asset Strategy enhances Mazda’s position as a niche player by optimising investment, improving manufacturing processes, and ensuring the timely introduction of electrified models.

SMARTER INVESTMENT AND PRODUCTION

Mazda previously announced a 1.5 trillion yen investment in electrification by 2030, a figure that could rise to 2 trillion yen due to inflation. However, by leveraging strategic partnerships and optimising battery investments, the company aims to keep costs at 1.5 trillion yen. Instead of procuring all battery components in-house, Mazda will halve its expected battery investment by collaborating with industry partners.

Mazda is also deploying Mazda Monozukuri Innovation 2.0, an advanced development and production methodology that triples productivity, allowing for more complex vehicle development using existing resources.

The company’s first in-house battery EV, set for launch in 2027, will see a 40-per-cent

reduction in development investment and 50-percent fewer development man-hours through strategic partnerships. By integrating battery EVs and traditional engine vehicles on the same mixed-production line, Mazda expects to:

• Reduce capital investment by 85% compared to building a new EV factory.

• Cut mass production preparation time by 80%.

• Improve flexibility in responding to market demand shifts.

This streamlined approach aligns with Mazda’s goal of generating sustainable growth by maintaining high asset efficiency, competitive technology, and strong financial performance.

ADVANCING MAZDA’S MONOZUKURI PHILOSOPHY

Mazda’s Monozukuri Innovation 1.0 introduced a standardised, flexible production system that balances economies of scale with the ability to meet diverse customer needs. Now, Monozukuri Innovation 2.0 builds on this foundation by:

• Expanding model-based development (MBD) with AI-driven vehicle modelling.

• Integrating MBD across the entire supply chain through co-creation with partners like JAMBE.

• Introducing ‘Rootless Production Equipment’,

including automated guided vehicles (AGVs), to enhance efficiency and adaptability.

• - Optimising component supply chains to reduce part variations and improve logistics.

NEXT-GEN SKYACTIV-Z AND EV DEVELOPMENT

Mazda remains committed to efficient internal combustion engine (ICE) technologies as part of its electrification journey. The new SKYACTIV-Z engine, debuting in the nextgeneration Mazda CX-5 by 2027, will:

Meet stringent Euro 7, LEV4, and Tier 4 emissions standards.

Deliver high fuel efficiency and driving performance.

Integrate with Mazda’s proprietary hybrid system.

Be adapted for large inline-six engines and rotary engine applications.

Mazda is also developing a flexible EV platform that supports various battery types and model configurations. This ensures long-term adaptability to evolving battery technologies, while maintaining Mazda’s signature Jinba-ittai driving experience.

The first fully in-house Mazda BEV will be produced in Japan from 2027, reinforcing Mazda’s commitment to global electrification with precision and efficiency.

NEW KYB Skorched4: Built for reliability in demanding conditions

KYB’S SKORCHED4 SHOCK ABSORBERS ARE DESIGNED TO WITHSTAND THE TOUGHEST CONDITIONS, PROVIDING RELIABLE AND CONSISTENT PERFORMANCE FOR 4WD

Engineered for durability, Skorched4 shocks offer mechanics a robust solution for customers needing enhanced suspension performance in off-road and heavyduty applications.

Reliability was a key focus in the

VEHICLES

development of the Skorched4 range. The shocks feature reinforced metal housings with a twin-tube design, offering protection against physical damage and ensuring longterm durability. This construction is particularly beneficial for vehicles frequently exposed to

rough terrain and demanding workloads.

The Skorched4 series is built to handle high-stress environments. It includes 16mm hard-chromed rods to resist wear, along with reinforced guide bushings, pistons, and seals for improved longevity. KYB has also optimised internal fluid volume by increasing the cylinder, piston, and rod diameters, which enhances heat dissipation, reduces aeration, and minimises suspension fade under heavy use.

For increased suspension travel, the shocks are designed with extended and compressed lengths 30mm to 50mm longer than OEM specifications. This added range of motion is crucial for vehicles tackling uneven surfaces or carrying heavier loads. The micro-smooth, hard-chromed pistons and multi-lip seal system help reduce friction, prevent contamination, and maintain consistent oil and gas integrity.

The Skorched4 range also incorporates Speed Sensitive Valving, which automatically adjusts damping to suit varying road conditions, ensuring smoother handling and improved ride control. High-strength Teflon bushes provide additional protection for internal components, enhancing durability during full extension movements.

Designed with the demands of off-road and commercial vehicle use in mind, KYB Skorched4 shocks offer a dependable upgrade for workshops servicing 4WDs and utility vehicles.

Blackfern celebrates 2025 International Year of the Cooperative

2025 HAS BEEN DESIGNATED AS THE INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF THE COOPERATIVE BY THE UNITED NATIONS IN RECOGNITION OF THE BUSINESS MODEL’S POSITIVE CONTRIBUTION TO COMMUNITIES WORLDWIDE

Co-operatives distinguish themselves from other business models through adherence to seven internationally recognised principles, which are detailed on the Cooperative Business New Zealand website. Fundamentally, co-operatives are built on values such as equality, solidarity, self-responsibility, and democracy. A key feature is the distribution of surplus funds back to members based on their participation.

Recent economic challenges and the ensuing recession have led many small business owners to collaborate, sharing resources and knowledge, and collectively advocating for their industries. This inclination towards cooperation is natural, as much of what we learn comes from others.

In New Zealand, over 300 cooperatives

operate across various sectors. The top 30 cooperatives contribute approximately 13 per cent to the nation’s GDP, employing around 45,000 people. Benefits of cooperative membership include group purchasing or selling, leading to cost savings, profits remaining within local communities, access to shared business and industry information, and reduced marketing expenses. Suppliers also play a crucial role as stakeholders in a cooperative, and their importance should not be underestimated by shareholders. Without suppliers, the foundation of any buying cooperative could be compromised.

In recognition of the 2025

International Year of the Cooperative, Blackfern Cooperative is hosting a conference in Hobart, Tasmania, from 21 to 24 August. The conference fee is AU$1,450 per couple, which includes breakfast, a cocktail evening, a member dinner, AGM lunch, and four nights at the premium five-star Tasman Hotel located on the waterfront, providing easy access to markets and group tours.

Tasmania is often an overlooked destination; however, those who have visited frequently commend its distinctiveness from mainland Australia and New Zealand. The region’s well-preserved history adds to its charm. For more details and to register, visit the Blackfern website. Additionally, Blackfern is running a promotion to encourage member registrations. Members who register have the chance to win one of three refunds of their conference costs. Terms and conditions apply.

Projecta’s IDC50X: Tough, smart, and built for the future

THE IDC50X IS ONE OF PROJECTA’S MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASES, DESIGNED TO MEET THE INCREASING NEED FOR RELIABLE OFF-GRID POWER

For anyone heading off-grid, reliable power is essential. With larger auxiliary batteries — particularly lithium — becoming more common, the demand for high-performance charging solutions has never been greater. That’s where Projecta’s IDC50X Intelli-Charge 50A Dual Battery Charger comes in.

Building on the success of the IDC25X, this next-generation model delivers more power, greater efficiency, and improved flexibility, making it a future-proof solution for a wide range of battery setups. Whether running a 4WD, camper, caravan, or marine application, the IDC50X is designed to keep your system powered and running smoothly.

BUILT

TO HANDLE THE HARSHEST

CONDITIONS

Off-grid power systems don’t always get an easy ride. From engine-bay heat to water crossings, dust, and constant vibration, charging units need to be as tough as the vehicles they’re installed in. The IDC50X is built to withstand extreme environments, with IP68 and IP69K ratings for water and dust resistance, which means it can handle high-pressure water spray, heavy vibration, and extreme temperatures without missing a beat. Its fully potted circuitry is encased in high-quality

thermal epoxy resin, which helps to manage heat and protect internal components, so no matter where it’s mounted, it’s built to last. It is vibration and shockproof, meeting Heavy Vehicle standards, and comes with a five-year warranty for total peace of mind.

SMART, EFFICIENT CHARGING

Projecta has designed the IDC50X to maximise battery life and performance, no matter the setup. It supports a wide range of battery types, including AGM, GEL, WET, Calcium, and Lithium, using three- and five-stage charging to optimise performance.

The charger also features MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) solar charging, delivering over 90% efficiency — a crucial advantage for off-grid setups where every watt counts. It continuously monitors solar input, adjusting to changing conditions to extract the maximum possible charge, even in partial shade.

Other smart features include automatic temperature compensation, which adapts the charge rate based on environmental conditions, and voltage drop compensation, ensuring the correct voltage reaches the battery even over long cable runs.

RELIABLE, HASSLE-FREE OPERATION

One of the standout features of the IDC50X is its ability to handle lithium batteries with ease. If a lithium battery’s Battery Management System (BMS) shuts down, the charger’s Lithium Wake-Up Mode allows it to be restarted with a single button press, eliminating the common frustration of trying to kickstart a ‘sleeping’ lithium battery.

The unit also supports parallel charging, meaning multiple IDC50X or IDC25X units can be linked together to charge larger battery banks without the risk of overcharging. This is especially useful for touring setups, heavyduty applications, and vehicles running multiple accessories.

A SMARTER WAY TO STAY POWERED

One of the biggest advancements in the IDC50X is its Intelli-IQ connectivity, making it one of the most connected DC-to-DC chargers available. With Bluetooth and LIN bus integration, users can:

• Monitor and adjust settings from a smartphone, tablet, or Intelli-IQ display.

• Update firmware via Bluetooth — no need for dealer visits.

• Customise charging profiles, ensuring compatibility with new battery technologies.

• Integrate with other devices, such as light bars or relays, for a more versatile setup.

This level of connectivity and control makes it easier than ever to keep track of power levels, optimise performance, and future-proof your charging system as battery technology continues to evolve.

PARALLEL CHARGING

The LIN bus enables the IDC50X to communicate natively, ensuring synchronised charging across multiple units without the risk of overcharging. It is also upgradeable, making it easy for customers to add more IDC50X or IDC25X units as their charging needs grow. This system allows for quicker charge times and meets higher load requirements when larger batteries are installed (requires IQD2).

EASY TO INSTALL

The IDC50X features brass posts for lug termination and blade terminals, ensuring the most secure and reliable connections while preventing wiring errors. The nut and bolt termination method allows for easy and secure installation. Once connected, the unit is equipped with a snap-on cover that protects the connections from environmental conditions and conceals the wiring for a clean, professional appearance. The kit includes everything needed for installation (excluding fuses), with lugs, terminals, and heat shrink all provided.

APPLICATION GUIDE

The IDC50X is designed for vehicle applications where an auxiliary or secondary battery is present. Built for use in tough and rugged conditions, it supports all the power requirements for a DC-to-DC charger.

1992 Nissan Skyline GTS-T

Type M (HCR32)

OWNER: JAROD NISBET PHOTOS: DEVEN SOLANKI

NZPC: Hey mate, that Skyline of yours is pure eye candy! How did you get into performance cars in the first place?

Ever since I was little, I have always been amazed by cars and grew up around them. My poppa, Adrian Nisbet, was heavily involved in the drag racing scene in Whangarei. When I first moved to Auckland from Whangarei, my

dad, Linton Nisbet, bought a fully forged Evo VI as a company vehicle. He would drop me off at primary school and drive around Orewa, Auckland, and anywhere we went. My uncle Richy (Richard Biddle) also always had fast and loud cars — from Cefiros, Skylines and Commodores to Falcons and Mazdas. You name it. As I got older, I started to really like Skylines,

as any young boy would. I would get a new NZPC magazine every month, go through it countless times, cut out my favourite cars, and make my own little magazines.

Having a passion for cars isn’t for the fainthearted, which I came to understand as I grew up. It was expensive, and, well, you weren’t very liked by your usual civilian, I like to say. I didn’t really take a liking to knitting or sports, so cars and being obnoxious seemed to be the way to go. Seeing all the cars every year at Big Boys Toys and the 4 and Rotary Nationals and seeing owners standing by their cars and getting appreciation for what they had built, I could see how happy it made them feel. Seeing that made me want to feel like that, too!

part for me. As everyone knows, while building a car, it has to be perfect. I have well over 200 hours in the panel work alone. Rust patches had to be perfect; guards had to be perfect — everything had to be taken back to bare steel or bare plastic. I think I did the rear guards five times. I would get them ready for primer, decide they weren’t perfect, and start again! Trying to find the best front guards, doors, and headlights with no chrome damage was a challenge. Once the panel work was done and I was happy, it went into paint. From there, the car transformed very quickly into how I

envisioned it when I first started building it. I see you own a panel and paint shop. How has that benefited you during your build?

I have a small family-owned business in Orewa, Auckland, called Coast Collision. We primarily do insurance work, but we love to have the odd custom job come through to show what our shop is really capable of. I was lucky enough to go into business with my dad two years ago. We both got the opportunity to buy it, and it’s been amazing ever since. Having the business, I would love to say it helped, but we did not own the business when the car was panelled

and painted. However, it has helped a lot when I’ve had little mishaps with the car, from bonnets flying up to a slight bus incident. Not to mention, when I get a decent scratch or even a stone chip, the car is pulled apart, and the bonnets and bumpers are repainted. Whatever may be damaged, it is repaired straight away, as the car must always stay perfect! It is a representation of yourself, right? Also, it’s my personal panel work and our shop’s work showcasing what we are able to do If you could go back in time and redo one thing on the car, what would it be?

The one thing I regret not doing would have to be not spending more money on the motor internally. I do wish I did a forged bottom end as now I know it is going to affect me as we all want more power eventually, and having the factory bottom end I am limited to the power I am making now. If I had the garage space and experience, I would have put the car on a rotisserie as the goal was to restore the car to its former glory with some tweaks, of course. Do you have any future plans for the car?

The future plan for the car is to send it to HiPower Performance to have the bottom end built and some minor head work done. I might go down the track of a SpeedTech gear set, switch the car to ethanol, and try to chase more power. Ultimately, the end goal would be to go RB28 purely for the ability to rev more and the increased torque. This is a goal far into the future as, at this stage, I just want to enjoy the car and let others enjoy and admire it. You have unlimited funds; what wheels are you putting on your Skyline?

BUILD BREAKDOWN

I have always loved Work Equip 05s, and only in 17s. My runner-up choice would have to be Blitz Techno Speed Z1s.

I see you’re also building another R32 in the background. How’s that coming along, and what are your plans for it?

Yes, actually, I have another R32 coupe that I am slowly collecting parts for. I picked up that car as a crashed front-end shell from Taupo for a box of Heineken. At the time, I had another two 32 sedans, so I was able to cut the front of a sedan and repair the front of the coupe, along with converting the suspension to McPherson

(S13, S14, and S15) suspension and steering. The engine bay was then painted in Toyota Blade Bronze, and the wheel arches were painted cream. If you know that colour scheme, it will be the same as Adam LZ’s Cream 180SX. It will be a dedicated track car with an SR20DET, aiming for a nice and playful 280-300kW. The car will get a complete roll cage, Vertex Kit, Type M spoiler, and DMAX vented bonnet. I’ll just try to keep the car as simple and grassroots as possible, as I don’t plan on ever taking the car into competitive drifting. I just want it to be a car that I can take to the track, and if friends

want to go for a drive, they can hop in and enjoy it as well. Because what’s the point of cars without having fun with your friends?

I also have a Toyota Hilux LN106 that is currently being restored. The motor is completed: a 2.8L 3L with a ported and polished head, TD27 valve springs, Ford Falcon Barra valves, custom-made retainers, cut valve seats to suit, oversized pistons, custom-made head studs from the USA, HRC30 Holset, custom-made exhaust manifold, 40mm external gate, and a 12mm pump. It should hopefully be able to send the little 2.8 to the moon. For the foreseeable future, I do want to build more, but it must be in a way that doesn’t involve selling other vehicles to complete others.

Cheers for the yarn, Jarod!

Keeping Holden on the road

HOLDEN MAY NO LONGER BE IN PRODUCTION, BUT FOR VEHICLES STILL IN CIRCULATION, PARTICULARLY THE COLORADO AND COMMODORE, TRANSMISSION

ISSUES HAVE BECOME A GROWING CONCERN FOR OWNERS

As most, if not all, Holdens are out of warranty now, there is fortunately continued availability of aftermarket GM-manufactured parts. The Gearbox Factory has the know-how and experience to repair these vehicles and a good ongoing supply of these aftermarket parts.

COMMON TRANSMISSION ISSUES & REPAIRS

One of the most frequently reported transmission problems at the moment is from the GM’s 6L50 transmission, which is commonly found in Colorados. These 6L50 transmissions have gained a reputation for specific faults, particularly in the valve body and torque converter. This leads to erratic shifting, harsh shuddering and premature wear to the transmission.

UNDERSTANDING TORQUE CONVERTERS & LOCK-UP CLUTCH ISSUES

A crucial component of any automatic transmission, the torque converter was first

developed in the early 1900s to transfer power from the engine to the transmission’s input shaft. It functions much like a fluid flywheel, propelling fluid outward to generate movement. In the mid-1900s, advancements in transmission efficiency introduced the lock-up clutch, which physically connects the engine and transmission, reducing slippage and improving fuel economy. By the 1970s, this technology became standard in automatic vehicles to enhance performance. However, as modern vehicles rely on multi-stage lock-up clutches, failures have become increasingly common. Lock-up shudder, a well-known symptom in failing torque converters, presents itself as a pulsating or vibrating sensation under acceleration — often mistaken as engine misfires. This issue is frequently linked to low-quality or deteriorating transmission fluid, making regular servicing with the correct oil essential for longevity.

WHY TRANSMISSION MAINTENANCE IS CRITICAL FOR HOLDEN OWNERS

Fibre technology unlocks efficient rare earth recovery

KOREAN BREAKTHROUGH COULD CONTRIBUTE TO THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY BY ENABLING THE RECYCLING OF METALS FROM WASTE PRODUCTS

Abreakthrough in the efficient recovery of essential materials has been made by researchers at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), who have developed a novel fibre-based material capable of recovering rare earth metals such as neodymium (Nd) and dysprosium (Dy) with remarkable efficiency. This development promises to not only address the growing demand for rare earths but also contribute to the circular economy by enabling the recycling of metals from waste products, such as old permanent magnets.

KIST’S BREAKTHROUGH IN RARE EARTH RECOVERY

Dr Jae-Woo Choi and his team at KIST have developed an innovative fibre material that efficiently recovers rare earth metals from industrial waste, particularly from discarded permanent magnets. Their research describes a nanostructured composite fibre made from metal-organic structures and polymer acrylic fibres. This new material offers exceptional adsorptive properties, enabling it to extract neodymium and dysprosium at previously unattainable rates.

The fibre material developed by KIST demonstrates adsorption capacities of 468.60 mg/g for neodymium and 435.13 mg/g for dysprosium — figures that are the highest reported to date. This is a significant leap forward compared to traditional adsorptive materials, which often struggle to efficiently capture these rare metals. The researchers believe this material could revolutionise the process of recovering rare earths, making it more efficient and cost-effective.

One of the key advantages of this new fibre is its ability to recover rare earths from waste liquids such as industrial wastewater, which often contains small quantities of valuable metals. The material can easily adsorb these metals, which can then be extracted and repurposed, reducing the need for new mining operations and helping close the loop on the resource lifecycle. Moreover, this material can be adapted to different types of wastewater, making it highly versatile and applicable across various industries.

POTENTIAL IMPACTS ON THE EV INDUSTRY AND BEYOND

The potential applications of this highefficiency rare earth recovery material are vast. In the automotive sector, particularly for electric and hybrid vehicle production, the demand for rare earth metals is expected to skyrocket as

automakers continue to shift towards electric drivetrains. The ability to recover these critical materials from waste could help stabilise supply chains and ensure that the EV industry has access to the necessary resources for long-term growth.

The adoption of this technology could reduce the environmental impact associated with traditional mining practices, which often involve significant ecological disruption. By recovering rare earths from waste, KIST’s new material not only contributes to a more sustainable supply chain but also helps to promote circular economy principles in industries such as EV manufacturing, wind power generation, and robotics.

CHALLENGES AND FUTURE PROSPECTS

While this new fibre material holds immense promise, there are still challenges to be addressed before it can be scaled up for widespread industrial use. For instance, the cost of developing and implementing this technology on a large scale could be a barrier, particularly in markets where cheap, raw materials are still readily available. Additionally, the material’s long-term performance, particularly regarding its ability to handle high volumes of waste and its durability, will need to be tested over time.

However, if successfully scaled, this technology could not only help solve the rare earth supply problem but also contribute to broader sustainability goals by reducing reliance on new mining and promoting recycling efforts. As Dr Youngkyun Jung, a colleague of Dr Choi, noted: “In the future, the technology can be expanded to selectively recover various useful resources, including rare earths, from industrial wastewater, contributing to carbon neutrality and rare earth-related upstream and downstream industries.” With this breakthrough, KIST is not only enhancing the future of the EV industry but also setting a new standard for resource recycling and sustainability in the global supply chain.
