The commitment to expanding branch stocks means BNT can service customer needs without delay, a crucial factor given the rising consumer demand for engine electrical components.

This logistical overhaul ensures rapid restocking capabilities through direct distribution from their two Auckland, Melbourne and Brisbane Distribution Centres. This improvement enhances BNT’s ability to quickly say ‘yes’ to customer inquiries.

TRANSFORMATIVE YOY GROWTH

Customers today seek variety and require product quickly, and BNT’s revamped inventory selection has resonated with these market demands.

EMPOWERING THE FRONTLINE TEAM

A key component of BNT’s expansion strategy is the empowerment of its frontline team members through enhanced product training. By familiarising staff with the expanded inventory range, BNT has ensured that its team can offer expert advice and rapid solutions, with a focus on delivering the best possible customer service. This initiative also underpins the broader strategy of fostering direct engagement with customers, encouraging them to ‘come in and have a chat’.

THE GREATEST BENEFIT: SAYING ‘YES’ MORE OFTEN

The most significant advantage arising from BNT’s strategic expansion is the ability to say

Summer getaway in the land of adventure

ACDELCO DEEP CYCLE AND MARINE BATTERIES ARE YOUR BEST CHOICE FOR POWERING YOUR HOLIDAY JOURNEY

Summer is in full swing, and there is no better place than home for an unforgettable end-of-year getaway. The Bay of Islands, Coromandel, Tongariro National Park, Mount Maunganui and Queenstown will undoubtedly be hot spots among locals and international tourists. Before kickstarting your summer adventure, it is crucial to ensure that your vehicle is fitted with a reliable battery, such as an ACDelco Deep Cycle or Marine battery, for peace of mind and uninterrupted fun.

ACDelco M Series and HCM Series batteries are specifically designed for recreational and marine applications. The ACDelco M Series are marine starting batteries that provide higher cranking power to start recreational vehicles and marine craft reliably. M Series batteries have many other features: increased capacity for higher cranking power, lock-bonded plate groups to improve vibration resistance, and marine-style dual terminals (stainless steel stud and SAE post). These batteries are maintenance-free, requiring no topping up with water over the battery’s lifetime.

The HCM series are dual-purpose batteries that can be used for cranking and cycling. They are designed for demanding marine and leisure applications like RVs, 4X4s, and SUVs. HCM batteries can power GPS navigation, fish finders, fridges, and other electrical accessories. These batteries are built with thicker plates to increase cycling capacity, and the plate groups are lock-bonded to improve vibration resistance.

If you don’t have a dedicated holiday vehicle and prefer using the everyday car for everything, the ACDelco Automotive range

is an excellent choice. The range includes Premium (SMF), Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB), and Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) options to suit a variety of makes and models of vehicles. ACDelco EFB and AGM batteries have been specifically designed for modern vehicles with high electrical demands and Stop-Start technology. These batteries are built to perform in extreme conditions where performance matters.

ACDelco has dominated the aftermarket parts industry for over 100 years. The brand has a solid reputation as a premium source of experience and technology. Its backing by the global powerhouse, General Motors, is a testament to its product quality. Every ACDelco battery undergoes meticulous laboratory testing and rigorous quality control assessments before its introduction to the market, ensuring the utmost standards of excellence. All batteries are backed by up to three years’ warranty, further attesting to their exceptional quality and performance capabilities.

The comprehensive ACDelco battery range covers automotive, commercial, deep cycle, marine and garden applications. The complete range is distributed by R&J Batteries in New Zealand and Australia. The battery distributor also runs the region’s popular ACDelco Battery Stockist program. Auto electrical workshops, battery resellers, and parts distributors who want to leverage the power of a globally recognised brand can join the stockist program.

The ACDelco Battery Stockist program offers different levels of support to cater to the unique requirements of each business.

Stockists can choose a sign-up level that best suits their needs and required resources. A key component of the program is the inclusion of marketing and support to showcase the ACDelco brand. Various marketing activities are executed throughout the year to raise brand awareness for the products and increase sales for ACDelco battery stockists. R&J Batteries’ national reach allows the company to advertise ACDelco batteries at a broader level through mediums such as digital campaigns and trade magazines. Stockists will be granted a subsidy allowance for building and vehicle signage to strengthen their position as authorised resellers of ACDelco batteries. Stockists will also receive a substantial subsidy allowance for Local Area Marketing (LAM) to increase awareness and sales. They will also benefit from branded merchandise, a battery catalogue, and pointof-sale materials. Comprehensive training on ACDelco products, including their features and benefits, will also be provided to enhance their selling capabilities.

ACDelco Deep Cycle and Marine batteries are available at R&J Batteries’ Wiri, Christchurch, Hamilton, Albany and Nelson branches and via selected stockists. Businesses interested in joining the ACDelco Battery Stockist program are encouraged to get in touch with their local R&J Batteries branch.

Introducing the Projecta IDC50X

A HIGHLY ANTICIPATED RELEASE FROM PROJECTA IS THE IDC50X INTELLI-CHARGE DC TO DC WITH MPPT SOLAR 50A DUAL-BATTERY CHARGER

As more people venture further off-grid, the demand for larger batteries — often lithium — has increased significantly, making the need for extra power more critical. The IDC50X elevates the multi-award-winning IDC25X to a new level, providing ample power to support virtually any system.

The IDC50X represents a game changer for the Projecta brand. With thousands of hours of meticulous in-house engineering, it is more than just a dual battery charger with solar; it is a truly customisable, future-proof, state-of-theart device.

BEST POSSIBLE BATTERY CARE

The IDC50X is designed to provide the necessary power for any system capacity. It delivers a three- or five-stage charge at 50A during the entire bulk charging phase, enabling faster charging without compromising quality. Compatible with lithium, lead-acid, AGM, GEL, and calcium batteries, the IDC50X can be customised (with IQD2) to suit any current or future battery, allowing for tailored charging. While a 50A charge may overwhelm smaller alternators and damage the vehicle, the IDC50X dynamically adjusts output based on available voltage.

To protect the battery, IDC50X employs a proprietary automatic temperature compensation algorithm. This adjusts charging

based on battery temperature, crucial for safeguarding battery lifespan. Many chargers lack this feature, risking damage without user intervention. IDC50X automatically protects your battery.

Additionally, IDC50X includes a sophisticated MPPT solar charge feature, the most efficient solar charging method, drawing maximum power from solar panels even in the shade. It continuously monitors various inputs from solar panels, measuring voltage and amperage to find the best balance for maximum power production.

It also has a Lithium Wake-up Mode. Lithium batteries come with a Battery Management System (BMS) that shuts down the battery when the charge is low, complicating standard chargers. With IDC50X, simply press a button to wake up the battery, or for IQD2 users, use the Intelli-IQ app from the driver’s seat.

BUILT TOUGH, WON’T LET YOU DOWN IN REMOTE LOCATIONS

Like its smaller counterpart, the IDC50X is the toughest 50A dual battery charger available. Engineered to meet IP68 and IP69K ratings for water and dust ingress — higher than any other charger on the market — IDC50X is safe from failure due to submersion (up to 1m) or highpressure water spray, and it can withstand harsh vibrations and shocks.

Purpose-built for mounting in canopies, caravans or under the bonnet, the circuitry is fully potted with high-quality thermal epoxy and features an aluminium heatsink to dissipate heat effectively.

The IDC50X incorporates top-tier electronic components for optimal efficiency in converting input power to output power, generating minimal heat and reducing stress on components for an exceptionally long lifespan.

The internal construction eliminates solder in high-current connections, using brass posts and crimped terminals for superior contact quality and enhanced reliability.

To support this quality, a comprehensive five-year warranty is offered, covering full replacement or refund.

EASY TO INSTALL

The IDC50X features brass posts for lug termination and blade terminals, ensuring the most secure and reliable connections while preventing wiring errors. The nut and bolt termination method allows for easy and secure installation. Once connected, the unit is equipped with a snap-on cover that protects the connections from environmental conditions and conceals the wiring for a clean, professional appearance. The kit includes everything needed for installation (excluding fuses), with lugs, terminals, and heat shrink all provided.

MOST CONNECTED DC/DC CHARGER

The IDC50X can be monitored through a smartphone, tablet, or the Intelli-IQ smart display. Users can adjust various parameters related to the battery charge profiles, ensuring that the IDC50X can adapt to any new battery that enters the market via the app. The firmware is upgradeable through Bluetooth, allowing users to update the IDC50X with just a few taps on their smartphone.

The Intelli-IQ Smart Display (sold separately or as part of the IDC50XIQ kit) offers realtime insights into charger performance on a market-leading display, which can be mounted conveniently. This ensures you never arrive on site thinking the battery is charging when it’s not. It also features programmable alarms to alert you before it’s too late.

If you over-discharge your lithium battery, it can be easily charged; just tap the app for remote Lithium Wake Up Mode, allowing the charger to be mounted wherever best suits your system.

The connected nature of the IQD2 means you won’t be stuck with outdated technology. The IDC50X will remain state-of-the-art from the day it’s installed until the vehicle is no longer in use. IQD2 keeps the system up-todate and scalable for future technologies.

With Intelli-IQ, multiple IDC50X units can be easily paralleled. This means two 50A units can be combined for a 100A output, or up to five units for a 250A system. Note that the IDC50X can also be paralleled with the IDC25X.

All-new ID.Buzz, an icon for a new era

VW INTRODUCES A FULLY ELECTRIC VAN IN THE SPIRIT OF THE ICONIC KOMBI

Volkswagen has announced the upcoming New Zealand launch of its first fully electric van, the ID.Buzz, scheduled to arrive in early 2025. The new model serves as a modern reinvention of the classic Kombi, a vehicle that became a cultural icon in the 1960s and remains a symbol of freedom and adventure. According to Volkswagen New Zealand’s

General Manager of Commercial Vehicles, Kevin Richards, the ID.Buzz draws inspiration from the legacy of the Kombi while introducing cuttingedge electric vehicle technology. “The Kombi became one of our greatest stories, filled with fond memories that Kiwis to this day hold close to their hearts. Fully reimagined, the ID.Buzz is an electric vehicle for future generations, and will

and product launch plan with its partners.

The Geely EX5, a mid-sized electric vehicle and the first model to enter the New Zealand market, was showcased at the ceremony.

The EX5 is slated for launch in 2025. Geely unveiled plans to establish an extensive network covering showrooms across major cities and regional areas in 2025 to support its long-term commitment. Partnering with local expertise, Geely aims to deliver comprehensive one-stop services and inclusive mobility solutions without compromise. To stay ahead in this fiercely competitive global market, Geely unveiled the Taizhou Declaration Strategy in September 2024. This initiative showcases Geely’s commitment to driving transformation through electrification, intelligence, connectivity, and shared mobility while further elevating Geely’s competitiveness in the passenger vehicle market. This strategy highlights Geely’s dedication to innovation, service, and sustainability, paving the way for the introduction of additional products featuring first-class designs and advanced technologies to the ANZ markets.

continue to shape our legacy,” Richards says.

The ID.Buzz lineup will include both passenger and commercial variants, offering a range of configurations. Passenger models will accommodate five, six, or seven seats, catering to families, friends, and adventurers alike. On the commercial side, the ID.Buzz Cargo is designed for businesses, featuring a payload capacity of 650kg and enough space for two Euro pallets.

The ID.Buzz Cargo has already received international recognition, winning the prestigious International Van of the Year 2023 (IVOTY) award prior to its market launch. Volkswagen New Zealand expects strong local interest, with customers already registering to learn more about the vehicle.

Volkswagen emphasises that the ID.Buzz represents its commitment to sustainability, innovation, and craftsmanship. The vehicle features 100-per-cent electric, carbon-friendly performance and incorporates recycled materials throughout its design. Additional highlights include a newly developed interior, IQ.Light LED matrix headlights, and a panoramic sunroof touted as the largest ever in a Volkswagen.

As New Zealand prepares to welcome the ID.Buzz, Volkswagen positions the model as a bridge between its storied past and an electric future. The vehicle aims to bring back the spirit of freedom and adventure that defined the Kombi, now adapted for a new era of sustainable mobility.

SMALL BUSINESSES OFTEN EMERGE FROM NECESSITY, AND AECS EQUIPMENT LTD IS A PRIME EXAMPLE

Established in June 2023 by Sean and Jodie Squires, AECS Equipment Ltd was created to distinctively separate Equipment Sales and Technical Support from AECS’s training services. AECS Equipment has a clear mission: to empower automotive repair businesses towards greater success: “We support our industry first over profit,” pledge Sean and jodie. While having the right equipment is crucial for repairing today’s advanced automotive systems, ensuring a return on investment is often overlooked — a gap that AECS aims to bridge.

With years of industry experience, Sean and Jodie are familiar with the challenges faced by automotive repair businesses. Workshop owners often juggle operations management, repairs, customer relations, and staff oversight, leaving little time for equipment research or troubleshooting. AECS prides itself on being a trusted advisor, offering expert advice on diagnostic equipment and the support needed to use it effectively.

Sean began his automotive career in 1988,working across heavy and light vehicles, small engines, and marine sectors. He launched

his first business in Anchorage in 1999, followed by World Cars Ltd in Auckland in 2000, which later moved to Queenstown. After selling the thriving business to staff in 2010, he joined AECS in Hawke’s Bay, training in diagnostics and gaining insight into industry needs. His observations in repair shops underscored a common theme: investing in the right tools and knowledge is vital to competitiveness.

AECS distinguishes itself by providing workshops with top-quality equipment and exceptional technical support. “We know how to use what we sell,” Sean notes, highlighting a rare advantage. “Our team supports customers over the phone, online, and in-person, which is crucial for busy workshops keeping vehicles on the road.”

With over 20 years in customer support, Jodie focuses on optimising business processes and software for client efficiency. “We take pride in our unique model,” she says. “Our team can install, set up, calibrate, and service the products we sell, offering unmatched support.”

Recently, Sean and Jodie returned to the Wairarapa, reconnecting with family. “Moving back to the best part of New Zealand to raise

our family was an easy choice,” Jodie says. “We love the district, with its excellent schools, beautiful outdoors, and relaxed lifestyle.”

Sean, whose career began with NZ Army training and expanded to managing automotive businesses nationwide, believes in the power of collaboration. “Our goal is simple: we succeed by helping the automotive repair industry succeed,” he states.

AECS Equipment Ltd has been welcomed into the Blackfern Cooperative’s network of specialist suppliers. Blackfern Director Roger Castleton comments, “We only engage with premium suppliers that add value to our members’ businesses, saving them time, money, and aggravation.” Additionally, Blackfern members earn double points with transactions through AECS Equipment Ltd. Govt passes ‘WoF’ but fails on industry training

PROGRESS ON ROADS OF NATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE, IMMIGRATION, AND CLEAN CAR STANDARDS HAS EARNED THE GOVERNMENT A PASS IN THEIR ANNUAL ‘WARRANT OF FITNESS’ CHECK, THE MOTOR TRADE ASSOCIATION (MTA) SAYS

The Motor Trade Association (MTA) has assessed the Government’s first year in office, commending its progress in certain areas affecting the automotive and transport sectors while highlighting significant shortcomings in others.

MTA Chief Executive Lee Marshall noted that the Government has taken positive steps to address key issues, including easing the driver licence testing backlog and increasing fees for tow truck operators. These moves align with several policy changes the MTA advocated for before the election. “Much of the policy change that MTA called for before the election has been actioned. The Government promised to roll up its sleeves and address a number of key areas, and deserves credit for doing so,” he said.

However, the MTA has expressed concern over what it describes as a lack of progress in several critical areas. These include prolonged

indecision on industry training following the disestablishment of Te Pukenga, delays in reviewing Warrant of Fitness regulations, and insufficient action on reducing regulatory burdens for the sector.

“It’s frankly ridiculous that we still have to give Government a fail for the complete lack of direction in the post-Te Pukenga world,” Marshall stated. He highlighted the ongoing labour shortages affecting automotive businesses, noting that the industry has provided detailed advice on training solutions but that progress remains slow. “They’ve now had more than a year … and still the speed of progress would give glaciers a bad name,” Marshall said.

On crime, the MTA acknowledged steps the Government has taken, such as measures to address retail crime and introducing community beat patrols. However, the organisation noted

Nissan’s e-POWER vehicle production passes 1.5 million milestone

GLOBAL PRODUCTION OF E-POWER VEHICLES EXCEEDED 1.5 MILLION UNITS TO THE END OF OCTOBER 2024

The e-POWER system combines a small gasoline engine with a lithium-ion battery to power an electric motor, which exclusively drives the wheels. The innovative powertrain, available in 68 markets worldwide, is a key component of Nissan’s approach to sustainable mobility. This design delivers an electric-vehicle-like driving experience characterised by responsive acceleration and reduced noise levels.

First introduced in Japan in 2016 with the Note e-POWER, the technology has since been incorporated into other models, including the Kicks and X-Trail SUVs and the Serena minivan. As of fiscal year 2023, e-POWER accounted for 42.6 per cent of Nissan vehicle sales in Japan.

In China, the Sylphy e-POWER sedan debuted in 2021, followed by the X-Trail SUV. In Europe, e-POWER variants of the X-Trail and

that service stations remain disproportionately targeted by violent crime, with incidents occurring at least twice a week on average.

The MTA’s assessment of the Government’s performance takes the form of a ‘Warrant of Fitness’ rating, a creative framework to evaluate progress in the sector. In a similar report six months ago, the Government was deemed ‘roadworthy’ but criticised for failings in areas such as crime, immigration, and industry training. While some progress has been made, the MTA emphasized the need for more decisive action to protect service stations and tackle labour shortages.

Marshall concluded by acknowledging the Government’s willingness to engage with the industry. “Overall, we are pleased the Government has engaged with and listened to industry, and we look forward to working with them to drive more positive change next year.”

Qashqai SUVs were launched in 2022, achieving over 100,000 sales by January 2024. Nissan plans to expand e-POWER availability to the United States and Canada by the end of fiscal year 2026.

Cumulative production figures highlight the technology’s global reach:

• Japan: 1,170,000 units

• Europe: 140,000 units

• China: 60,000 units

• Other markets: 150,000 units

Total production stands at approximately 1,520,000 units, reflecting Nissan’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the competitiveness and appeal of e-POWER to meet diverse customer needs worldwide.

New president for Motor Trade Association

STURROCK SAUNDERS ELECTED TO SUCCEED THE OUTGOING BOB BONIFACE

The Motor Trade Association (MTA) has announced the election of Sturrock Saunders as its new president. A current board member and prominent figure in the automotive sector, he will succeed the outgoing president, Bob Boniface.

In a statement, Saunders expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the organisation, which has represented the automotive industry for more than a century. “I am thrilled and honoured to follow in the significant footsteps of not only Bob but all those who have gone before me,” he said, acknowledging his predecessor’s contributions during his tenure.

Under Bob Boniface’s leadership, the MTA has continued to grow, with its membership now reaching 4,250 — believed to be the highest in its history. This includes representation across all sectors of the automotive industry.

Saunders outlined his vision for the

organisation, highlighting three key priorities. He aims to strengthen MTA’s position as the leading advocacy group for the automotive sector, leveraging its established reputation with the Government. He also plans to enhance the range of benefits and support offered to members, and to reinforce MTA’s commitment to professionalism, quality, and trust across the industry.

“My vision for MTA is first, to further cement our position as the undisputed peak body for automotive. Through our advocacy, we already have the ear and respect of Government, and we want to build on that,” he said.

Sturrock Saunders brings extensive experience in business, leadership, and governance within the automotive industry. Prior to his election as president, he served as MTA’s vice-president and held roles including board member of Auto Stewardship NZ, Finance and Risk Chair of Tyrewise, Chairman of the Inspiring Futures Foundation, Director of

VTNZ, and former Director of MITO.

His connection to the MTA spans generations. His father, Lawrie Saunders, also served on the MTA board and the MTF board and founded Mayfield Motors in 1965. Sturrock Saunders and his wife, Jo, managed the business from 2002 until its sale in 2015.

Saunders will lead the MTA as it continues to represent the interests of its diverse membership and support the professionalism of New Zealand’s automotive industry.

Rotary Laurel

One thing that screams ‘Kiwi ingenuity’ is seeing all the crazy engine swap combos that we Kiwis come up with. Sam Tierney hit us up with his 13B-swapped C33 Laurel and it’s bloody crazy hearing what he has in store for it. But, let’s turn back the clock to 2017 when he first imported this gem — a bone stock RB20E with a factory manual transmission.

Initially, it served as his daily driver, but as expected, he got bored and developed a thirst for real power. His desire to transform it into a weekend cruiser led him to make the decision to part with the familiar RB platform, given that he had already accumulated quite a collection over the years.

This is when he confessed his love for the rotaries and wanting to do something out of the ordinary. Sam managed to score a 13B motor and gearbox package from an FD RX7 which he brought over to his mate Matt at HUM Fabrication to work his magic and turn his dreams into a reality. Matt custommade everything to make this engine-swap work, from custom mounts, to exhaust and intercooler piping, and any other necessary components. Sam’s ECU of choice was a Haltech paired with the IC7 dash to keep an eye on everything. Props to the expert Hayden at Haywire Rotorsport for wiring it all up for him, squeezing out a solid 280kW from an unopened block, leaving Sam

absolutely thrilled. “I’ve had some fun with it for the past year,” Sam exclaimed.

However, the 13B won’t be resting on its laurels for much longer, as he is currently chipping away with his 20B PP, shifted by an HGT sequential box. He’s hoping for it all to come together in the new year and cannot wait to have even more fun with it. Sam’s choice for the exterior was to go for that stealthy sleeper look — pop the bonnet and the surprise factor becomes evident. His ultimate goal is to showcase his Laurel in a full NZPC feature once the 20B PP engine is installed and all the finishing touches are in place. We are eagerly looking forward to seeing this revision unfold!

Nitto Comeback

Oli Philips from Dunedin hit us up with his beautiful sunroof 1996 Mitsubishi Evo IV that’s had quite the journey so far. It all began in Christchurch when he and a mate went on a roadie after work one Friday evening and viewed the car on a crisp Saturday morning. The car had been under the care of an older gentleman who had owned it for several years, barely ever driving it.

Having previously owned an Evo IV, Oli knew exactly what to look for when inspecting it, and immediately fell in love with it. Fortunately, the motor already had some goodies on it, boasting a 2.2l displacement thanks to a Nitto Stroker kit, featuring a forged crank, pistons, and rods. Additionally, it had HKS 272 cams, and ARP head studs to ensure the engine is tightly fastened together. On the hot side, a TD06 turbo was mounted to a Sinco manifold and the brain of the entire operation is a Link G4+ ECU, locally made in Aotearoa.

On a side note, the Evo IV is also home to some Recaro SP-JJ raptor seats. The motor had previously reached a solid 260kW at the wheels and 750Nm of torque, running only 10psi of boost. Oli enjoyed ripping the Evo IV around the South Island roads until the hydraulic tensioner failed on the cambelt, resulting in bent intake valves and damaged pistons. Bugger! Luckily, Oli had just secured himself a mechanic’s apprenticeship, giving

himself the task to rebuild it while he was learning the ropes.

At the moment, the strip down is complete, and the motor is currently in the shop undergoing a once over before getting ready for assembly. Looking ahead, Oli’s plans to crank up the boost to achieve impressive power gains, all the while maintaining the reliability necessary for daily driving. He is hoping to crack around 300kW after the rebuild. Surprisingly, this Evo IV is not just a project; it’s Oli’s only car where he has invested his time and resources with plenty more excitement yet to unfold on the horizon

Longburn ’32

Paul Falvey has been working for a long time — 15 years to be exact — to bring his ’32 Ford Tudor to where it is today, but good things take time, as they say. The Tudor was imported to New Zealand from Argentina in the late 1980s. It spent some time languishing in a paddock untouched. Then Paul heard about it and grabbed it, with ambitions to hot rod it. The Tudor wasn’t in great shape and required some work, but it had the aesthetic Paul was looking for.

Having owned several hot rods over the years and knowing what was what, Paul transported the body to Magoo’s Street Rods in Masterton and ordered a new chassis with Kugel independent front and rear suspension. He had Magoo’s chop the roof by three and a half inches, construct new body panels, and fit the body when the chassis was finished. Magoo’s also designed the chassis to handle Paul’s selected driveline, being a Smeding’s 427ci Cobra crate engine, a Tremec TKO 600 five-speed transmission, and a Winters quick change diff.

After getting the Tudor back, Paul began fitting up the driveline and completing the body work. The delicate welding tasks that he couldn’t trust himself to complete or “frankly could not master” have been worked out by Brendan, his son, who has been a huge help. Once Paul was satisfied with the fitment, and after a test drive

Ryan Dunn from Whangaparaoais gearing up for something special with his latest build. As the second owner, he’s taken the car back to bare metal, applying a fresh titanium gunmetal grey paint job that took 380 hours.

Up front, it boasts a 550hp 400ci small block Chev paired with a Tremec TKX five-speed gearbox. The rear features a shortened nineinch diff with 15x8-inch Weld V-series beadlock wheels and Nankang tyres, while the front sports 15x6-inch RTS billet wheels.

With over $15K invested on the engine alone, this car promises to be impressive. As it nears completion, with final assembly and awaited chrome parts from overseas, stay tuned for a full feature in an upcoming issue of NZV8.

around the block, the car was stripped and the chassis was shipped to Customs Body Shop in Upper Hutt, where it was painted in Porsche mahogany.

Finally, assembly of the running gear began. This included 15 x 4.5-inch front Halibrand Kidney Beans and 15 x 10-inch rear Halibrand Real Rodders wheels wrapped in Hurst Racing piecrust slick rubber. The past year, since the chassis was completed, has been spent

fine-tuning the body and tying up any loose ends. Given that Paul has a big day to attend — Brendan’s wedding — the body is at present being painted at Customs Body Shop with a time-sensitive deadline. Before too long, the Tudor should be back home so Paul can finish it off and get it on the road in time for the wedding and a debut at Cromwell Classic Car & Hot Rod Festival. Paul has come a long way with this ’32 Ford Tudor, and the build quality is pure art. We’re looking forward to catching up with Paul for a full feature shortly — stay tuned.

BUILD BREAKDOWN

Grafted ’81 Camaro

Afew issues ago, we mentioned the ’81 Camaro build in progress at Real Rides. Well, it’s making headway, and the final version is coming to life. As Kayton says, “Every panel is modified.”

All the flares and the spoiler are handfabricated from steel or aluminium. The drip rails have been deleted, as have the door handles, and there are custom front-guard air intakes, just to name a few changes.

The rear trim, diffuser, and filler panels have been grafted in a carbon/aluminium mix, which keeps things interesting. Adding a modern touch, 2016 Camaro tail-lights have been seamlessly integrated into the rear, along with flush-fit front and rear screens for a sleeker finish. Up at the business end, it still retains

parts of the factory fibreglass nose cone, but this has been shortened by 70mm, the turn signals have been deleted, a carbon-fibre air intake has been added, and ’74 Pontiac headlight surrounds have been fitted. It’s also worth noting that the hood has been raised by 50mm along the factory swage lines.

Under the hood sits a boxed-in 572ci big block Chev, complemented by some impressive bead-rolled panels and meticulous attention to detail in the engine bay. With the engine paired to a Tremec TKO 600, delivering power to a Ford nine-inch rear end, there will be more than enough power and supporting modifications to make this car not only look cool but perform as well.

Beneath the full steel, graftedto-the-body flares is a set of 14-inch Baer rotors and six-piston front brakes, along with 13-inch rotors and fourpiston rear brakes. Filling the wheelhouses are 18x10-inch front and 18x12-inch rear Forgeline wheels. There’s also a full custom interior and a custom dash, just when you thought it couldn’t get any wilder. Blending new-school parts with old-school classic style is exciting, and we’re eager to see how it all comes together.

Like Father, Like Son

If you’re an avid Honda fan, then dig into this story! Ethan Hunter is in the midst of building a 1980 Honda Civic (2nd gen), except he’s binned the old, ancient running gear and swapped in a DOHC ZC motor with a turbo slapped on it. Get this: the idea for this build was inspired by his father because, as a kid, he had the exact same car with the same motor swap, except it was a racecar!

Since the racecar lost the battle to rust, he decided that he wanted to do the same, except with the addition of a turbo. How good! Ethan has owned the Civic for around five to six years, and it’s been a slow process doing the swap and shaving the engine bay smooth—all with his own hands! He decided to hand over the custom work to Speedfactor, who worked on the intercooler, manifold, and the other custom parts to make this build happen, and they’ve done a superb job!

His wheel of choice is a set of restored threepiece Work RSBs, and for stopping power, he’s opted for a Wilwood front brake setup and also converted the rears to disc.

At the moment, the Civic is currently on the trolley as Ethan is stripping the underseal right back and will be applying a fresh coat. He’s also planning to make all the strut braces and a half-cage before sending it off for a lick of paint. Ethan says he’s “hoping to have the car running next year! And only looking for

about the 300hp mark as the car is only 720kgs factory!” It’s going to be a zippy go-kart for sure, especially with that impressive power-toweight ratio!

MOTHERS premium car care for all surfaces

WITH SO MANY CAR CARE BRANDS AVAILABLE, DECIDING WHICH PRODUCT TO USE CAN BE OVERWHELMING; HOWEVER, ONE NAME THAT CONSISTENTLY STANDS OUT IN QUALITY

AND PERFORMANCE IS MOTHERS

Established in 1973 and headquartered in Huntington Beach, California, MOTHERS

High Performance Car Care has earned a strong reputation in the industry. Starting with a single product — mag wheel polish — the brand has evolved over five decades into a global leader in car care, offering more than 100 premium products. The family-owned business initially wrapped their polish in a business card tied with a rubber band. Today, their product range covers everything from paint and wheels to interior surfaces, reflecting their commitment to ongoing innovation and development.

What makes MOTHERS products stand out is their versatility. Their formulations have been tested across various vehicles, from daily-driven family cars to high-end show-stoppers like the world’s top hot rods. MOTHERS’ consistent focus on delivering high-quality results has made it a go-to choice for automotive enthusiasts and professionals.

Their product lineup includes everything from waxes, polishes, and protectants to cleaners designed for specific automotive needs. Whether for paint care, wheels, or interior surfaces, MOTHERS is trusted to provide premium protection and aesthetic enhancement. In paint care, the quality of the product can

make all the difference. Exceptional results can only come from exceptional ingredients, and MOTHERS has built its reputation on rigorous research and development. Their products are known for their attention to detail and superior formulas, designed to bring out the best in a car’s finish.

One of the standout offerings in their lineup is the MOTHERS CMX Ceramic Spray Coating, which blends silicon dioxide (SiO2) and titanium dioxide (TiO2). This product is highly regarded for its ease of use and superior performance. It creates a durable, hydrophobic barrier that protects the vehicle from contaminants. It can be applied to wet and dry surfaces, making it a versatile choice for enthusiasts and professionals. This revolutionary spray is a popular pick for those who want to maintain a showroom-quality finish without spending hours on detailing.

Keith Hunter’s 1934 Ford Coupe, pictured here and winner of the 2024 MOTHERS NZ Shine Award, is a testament to the quality of MOTHERS products, particularly the stunning finish that CMX Ceramic Spray Coating can achieve.
