Infinitev stands behind its products with an industry-best warranty and support package:

A CIRCULAR APPROACH TO BATTERY LIFE

Sustainability is a core part of Infinitev’s mission. The company follows a ‘reuse, repurpose, recycle’ approach to minimise environmental impact:

• Reuse: Batteries are repaired and remanufactured for continued use.

• Repurpose: Batteries with reduced capacity are repurposed for energy storage systems.

• Recycle: Materials from non-reusable batteries are recovered and reintroduced into new battery production.

• This zero-landfill policy helps reduce waste

and supports a more sustainable future for hybrid and EV technology.

THE ONLY NTRO-CERTIFIED BATTERIES IN AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND

The National Transport Research Organization (NTRO) is Australia’s leading applied research organization for transport innovation, driving the development of industry standards and best practices. NTRO sets the standard for transport systems by working closely with State and Territory governments in Australia and the New Zealand government.

Infinitev has been awarded Australia and New Zealand’s first-ever NTRO certification for the re-use of hybrid electric vehicle batteries in ANZ, making them pioneers in the field of battery re-manufacturing. This independent certification is for the process — the way in which Infinitev builds batteries — ensuring a high-quality, reliable product every time.

By meeting NTRO’s stringent criteria, Infinitev has demonstrated that its processes are not only technically sound but also aligned with the broader goals of sustainability and circular economy principles. NTRO’s certification process involved a thorough review of Infinitev’s technical claims, supporting documentation, and an on-site audit of its facilities. The certification gives confidence that a replacement battery built by Infinitev has been built to the highest standard for unmatched quality and reliability.

A GROWING MARKET, A FUTURE-PROOF OPPORTUNITY

Hybrid and EV adoption is accelerating in New Zealand. As more vehicles enter the market, the demand for affordable, reliable battery replacements will only increase. Workshops that partner with Infinitev are positioning themselves at the forefront of this transition, ensuring they can service hybrid and EV customers effectively and profitably.

Polestar integrates car key functionality with Apple Wallet

OVER-THE-AIR (OTA) SOFTWARE UPDATE ADDS THIS CONVENIENT TECHNOLOGY FOR POLESTAR 3, WITH SUPPORT FOR POLESTAR 4 COMING SOON

In a significant move towards streamlining the interaction between technology and automobiles, Polestar has announced an exciting update for Polestar 3 owners, integrating car key functionality directly into Apple Wallet. This development allows users to lock, unlock, and start their vehicles using their iPhone or Apple Watch.

The over-the-air (OTA) software update is

set to transform the way Polestar 3 drivers interact with their cars. The integration means that physical car keys could become a thing of the past for these users, with the ability to manage car access through their Apple devices seamlessly. The function supports sharing vehicle access with up to five other users via various platforms such as Messages, Mail, AirDrop, and WhatsApp. This feature comes with customisable permissions, enabling car owners to control whether these secondary users can merely enter the vehicle or drive it.

One of the standout features of integrating car keys into Apple Wallet is the Power Reserve function. This allows drivers to continue accessing and starting their vehicle for several hours, even if their iPhone battery is depleted, ensuring that users are never stranded due to a dead phone.

Polestar’s CEO, Michael Lohscheller, emphasised the company’s commitment to enhancing customer experience through technological advancements. “The introduction of car keys in Apple Wallet is a response to our customers’ wishes, employing technology to add value to our vehicles,” said Lohscheller. “This OTA software update further highlights the opportunities for continuous improvement and innovation offered by digital technology, making the already impressive Polestar 3 an even more compelling choice for tech-savvy drivers.”

While the recent update currently applies to the Polestar 3 model, the company has announced plans to extend this feature to the upcoming Polestar 4. This strategy underscores Polestar’s broader intention to integrate advanced technology across its product range, ensuring that all Polestar vehicles benefit from the latest in digital convenience and security.

Polestar’s latest update is a clear indication of the future direction of vehicle interactions, where traditional physical keys may no longer be necessary, and access to transportation becomes as simple as using a smartphone or smartwatch. As digital keys become more prevalent, users can expect a shift towards more integrated, userfriendly vehicle access and control systems, revolutionising the everyday convenience of car ownership.

Support for Polestar 4 is to follow soon.

Better brakes for installers, drivers, and the environment

NEW-GENERATION RDA BRAKES IMPROVE INSTALLATION, WEAR RATES, AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

RDA Brakes continues to expand its range in New Zealand, offering one of the most comprehensive selections of brake components in the country. With more than 3,000 vehicle applications, RDA covers over 90% of the nation’s car parc, catering to passenger vehicles, SUVs, utes, and light commercial vehicles. The latest additions to the RDA brake range reinforce its commitment to performance, convenience, and sustainability while improving compatibility with an even wider variety of vehicles.

INNOVATIVE DESIGN FOR EASIER INSTALLATION

The latest RDA Gen 3 disc brake rotors and drums feature a corrosion-resistant matteblack anti-rust coating, significantly enhancing surface rust resistance on non-braking surfaces. Unlike traditional rotors that require oil coatings for rust prevention — necessitating timeconsuming cleaning with brake cleaner — RDA rotors arrive ready to install straight from the box. This not only saves workshops valuable time but also reduces material waste and costs associated with brake cleaner products.

RDA’s brake rotors undergo 100% CNC machining and heat tempering, ensuring precise tolerances and extended durability. Additionally, a non-directional ground braking surface finish improves pad bedding-in, optimizing performance from the first application.

A COMPREHENSIVE THREE-TIER BRAKE PAD SYSTEM

RDA’s brake pad range has been refined to include three distinct tiers, ensuring that various driving conditions and vehicle applications are well supported.

GP Max Brake Pads: Designed for general everyday driving, these low-metallic pads provide a responsive pedal feel and effective braking performance up to 450°C.

Phantom Brake Pads: Incorporating advanced ceramic fibre technology, these pads offer low-dust performance and quieter operation, with an improved heat range up to 550°C.

Extreme Brake Pads: Built for heavy-duty applications, including towing and 4WDs, these pads are rigorously tested to maintain effective braking performance up to 600°C.

Each set of RDA brake pads includes essential accessories such as brake wear sensors (where applicable), anti-squeal fitment paste, and a pre-applied bed-in coating. This ensures a hassle-free installation process, reducing the need for manual bedding-in and further streamlining workshop efficiency.

EXPANDING THE RANGE WITH NEW APPLICATIONS

RDA’s recent product expansions introduce a wide array of new brake rotors and pads, enhancing coverage across both mainstream and high-end vehicle brands. Notable additions include:

Luxury and Performance Vehicles: Directional front rotors for the BMW X5 (G05, F95), along with pad options for various Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Jaguar models, catering to European performance and luxury vehicle owners.

Popular SUVs and Utes: Standard rotors and pads now available for the new 250 Series

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, and Isuzu D-MAX / MU-X, ensuring robust braking solutions for work vehicles and off-road applications.

Emerging and Growing Markets: Increased support for brands like MG, Haval, and Kia highlights RDA’s commitment to maintaining coverage for the evolving New Zealand car market.

Everyday Passenger Vehicles: The new rotor range includes fitments for widely driven models such as the Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Kona, and Mazda CX-5.

This expansion reinforces RDA’s ability to provide high-quality braking solutions across a diverse range of vehicle makes and models, keeping pace with the latest automotive trends and market demands.

SUSTAINABILITY AND COMPLIANCE WITH GLOBAL STANDARDS

RDA’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its brake pad formulations, all of which are designated copper-free (≤0.5%) and comply with strict overseas environmental standards, such as E11/R90 where applicable. By eliminating copper, RDA brake pads help reduce toxic brake dust runoff into stormwater systems, aligning with global initiatives to improve environmental safety.

Additionally, the anti-rust coating on RDA rotors reduces the reliance on chemical cleaning products during installation, further minimizing the environmental impact of brake servicing.

WARRANTY AND PERFORMANCE ASSURANCE

RDA backs its products with industry-leading warranties, reflecting its confidence in product durability and performance:

Brake Pads: 18-month/30,000km warranty

Brake Rotors: 12-month/20,000km warranty

Brake Drums: 12-month/20,000km warranty

Workshops and installers can rely on RDA’s commitment to quality assurance, ensuring customer satisfaction and long-term performance.

RDA continues to expand its range, adding approximately 200 new part numbers annually to consistently improve coverage of the New Zealand car parc. These latest additions ensure that both existing and newly introduced vehicles have access to high-quality braking solutions, reinforcing RDA’s strong presence in the local automotive market.

NZTA updates vehicle inspection processes

SUPPORT AVAILABLE FOR IOS AND VIS WITH NEW ONLINE SYSTEM AND APPLICATION CHANGES AIMED AT STREAMLINING COMPLIANCE

The New Zealand Transport Agency

Waka Kotahi is rolling out significant changes to the way Inspecting Organisations (IOs) and Vehicle Inspectors (VIs) conduct vehicle inspections and maintain compliance. A new online platform for recording warrants of fitness (WOFs) and pre-delivery inspections (PDIs) is being introduced, along with updated application requirements and compliance obligations. These changes aim to improve efficiency, transparency, and accountability across the vehicle inspection industry.

A NEW DIGITAL SYSTEM FOR INSPECTIONS

Since late 2024, NZTA has been gradually transitioning IOs and VIs to the new Vehicle Inspection and Certification (VIC) system. This online platform will fully replace the current WOF online system once all IOs have been migrated. Each day in New Zealand, approximately 20,000 WOFs and PDIs are processed, making a seamless transition to the new system essential.

The VIC system retains a similar interface but introduces several enhancements:

• More Vehicle Information: Inspectors can now access additional vehicle details, including past WOF inspections.

• Upfront Warnings: The system immediately flags issues such as lapsed registration or de-registration when a licence plate number is entered.

• Inspection Notes: IOs and VIs can now add and review comments related to WOF passes and failures — an improvement long requested by independent workshops.

These updates provide better visibility and record-keeping for inspectors and businesses, helping to streamline the inspection process while improving overall compliance.

STRONGER COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR IOS

Beyond the digital upgrades, NZTA has also revised its administrative and compliance requirements for IOs. A key focus is the Quality Management System (QMS), which IOs must maintain as a condition of their appointment.

For many IOs, keeping QMS documentation up to date can be challenging, especially in busy workshops where operational demands take priority. Without strong internal management systems, QMS compliance can easily slip. NZTA’s new master templates aim to simplify the process, helping IOs meet their obligations more consistently.

NEW APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR IOS AND VIS

Changes introduced earlier in 2024 have also impacted the process for becoming an IO or VI. Anyone applying for these roles — whether for WOF, Certificate of Fitness (COF), or other certification groups — must now meet additional requirements:

• Criminal Record Checks: Applicants must obtain their own Ministry of Justice criminal records and submit them with their application.

• Theory and Practical Assessments: Inspectors must pass an NZTA-administered theory exam as well as an on-site practical test.

• VIRM Knowledge Requirements: Both IO and VI applicants must demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the Vehicle Inspection Requirements Manual (VIRM).

• IO Representative Responsibilities: IO applicants must show they fully understand their obligations under the Notice of Appointment, the contract between NZTA and

the IO business.

• COFA and COFB Application Changes: There are also new requirements for applying for COFA (Certificate of Fitness A) and COFB (Certificate of Fitness B) approvals. These measures reinforce the importance of regulatory knowledge and operational oversight, ensuring that only well-qualified applicants are approved.

SUPPORT FOR IOS AND VIS: EXPERT GUIDANCE FROM BLACKFERN’S AREA MANAGERS

For IOs and VIs navigating these changes, independent support is available. Blackfern’s Christine Lambie (Christchurch) and Fliss Wilson (Taranaki) offer specialist assistance to both new applicants and existing IOs looking to maintain compliance.

Their services include:

• Guidance on NZTA application processes for new IOs and VIs.

• QMS document set-up and ongoing compliance support, including tailored updates based on the latest NZTA model guidelines.

• A comprehensive review of IO QMS manuals to ensure alignment with regulatory standards.

Both Christine and Fliss have decades of experience in the automotive industry, bringing deep knowledge and practical expertise to their roles. Contracting to Blackfern since 2019, they have successfully helped many workshops streamline their compliance processes.

Chris ensures everything is up to date. It’s worry-free,” and Harley from New Plymouth’s Brake and Clutch Rebuilders, who says, “Great service and makes life simple. Fliss takes the worry out of compliance issues.”

Blackfern members who contact Christine or Fliss in March will go into the draw to win 10,000 reward points.

Need assistance? For IOs needing support with WOF QMS compliance, in the South Island, call Christine on 027 442 0899, or in the North Island, call Fliss on 022 151 1243.

Rethinking citizen’s arrest powers and their Impact on the retail sector

THE RECENT PROPOSAL TO STRENGTHEN CITIZEN’S ARREST POWERS, INTENDED TO BOLSTER THE FIGHT AGAINST RETAIL CRIME, HAS STIRRED CONCERNS WITHIN THE NEW ZEALAND MOTOR TRADE SECTOR

The Motor Trade Association (MTA) has expressed apprehension regarding recent proposals to strengthen citizen’s arrest powers in New Zealand, fearing that the changes might prove to be ineffective against the backdrop of often violent retail crimes targeting service stations.

MTA’s service station members, who frequently find themselves at the sharp end of retail crime, are unlikely to back the move. MTA Chief Executive Lee Marshall highlighted the inherent risks associated with this approach: “There is, unfortunately, a risk that this measure will end up placing staff in physical danger, and escalates the risk of confrontation and conflict.”

The association underscores the duty of care that businesses owe to their employees

under the Health and Safety at Work Act. Marshall points out the dilemma that, while detaining offenders may now become more legally permissible, “Most employers will undoubtedly forbid it from the outset. Dealing with criminals should not be left to the workers in the front line. Crime is ultimately a symptom, and addressing the causes must be the focus of government if it wants to make a lasting impact on offending. Solving the issue requires more than ambulances — or police cars — at the bottom of the cliff.”

The MTA also calls for a more assertive stance from New Zealand Police in preventing and responding to crimes at service stations. According to Marshall, “Police functions under the Policing Act are very clear — and service

Government proposes annual safety inspections for vintage cars and motorhomes

IN A MOVE WELCOMED BY CLASSIC CAR ENTHUSIASTS AND MOTORHOME OWNERS, A PIVOTAL SHIFT FROM SEMI-ANNUAL TO ANNUAL SAFETY CHECKS COULD EASE FINANCIAL AND LOGISTICAL BURDENS

In a noteworthy development poised to resonate with classic car enthusiasts and motorhome owners across New Zealand, the Government, under the guidance of Transport Minister Chris Bishop, has proposed key changes to the existing Warrant of Fitness (WoF) and Certificate of Fitness (CoF) system. This initiative seeks to extend the current six-monthly inspection requirement to an annual one for vintage vehicles over 40 years old and private motorhomes, recognising the lower frequency of use and aiming to relieve owners of financial and logistical challenges.

The proposal specifically targets an estimated 128,000 vintage vehicles and 39,000

private motorhomes that currently adhere to a semi-annual inspection regime, with CoF costs reaching up to $300 and WoFs for vintage cars costing between $70 and $100. This change is anticipated to ease the substantial costs and time commitments imposed on owners, acknowledging that these vehicles are often used less frequently.

Highlighting the higher pass rates of vintage vehicles in WoF inspections compared to modern vehicles, the Government seeks to realign the regulatory framework with the practical use and risk profile of vintage cars and motorhomes in New Zealand. This adjustment is supported by both the New Zealand Federation of Motoring

stations across the country need police to come closer to meeting those obligations. The solution can’t be to put the onus on the business owners themselves, and certainly not on employees.”

While the MTA has been proactive in advocating for greater police patrols of atrisk sites and proposing that offenders who glorify their crimes on social media should face a stricter sentence, it recognises that the approach to mitigating retail crime must be multifaceted. Marshall expresses hope for future initiatives, elaborating, “We realise this is only the first action the Government has taken following advice from the Ministerial Advisory Group. We hope further recommendations include sharing knowledge between sectors of preventative and de-escalative measures that work, giving employers the tools they need to minimise the chance of crime. Reducing crime is everyone’s interest, and our experience is that businesses are not at all protective in sharing ideas that help everyone.”

Clubs and the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association, reflecting a collective push within the community for a more rational inspection frequency that accounts for the meticulous care and limited use of these vehicles.

Moreover, the New Zealand Automobile Association (AA) has expressed approval of the proposal, proposing further refinement to the inspection regime by considering the distance a vehicle travels as a measure of wear and tear, providing a more nuanced approach that could more accurately reflect vehicle usage and condition.

Should these changes come into force, they will signify a considerable shift in New Zealand’s regulatory stance on vintage vehicles and motorhomes, aiming to balance the preservation of road safety with a more realistic appreciation of these vehicles’ usage patterns. As this proposal progresses through the consultation and potential implementation stages, it continues to captivate the attention of New Zealand’s automotive community, heralding a significant adjustment in the oversight of cherished vintage and recreational vehicles.

WORKSHOP SAFETY FOCUS

Essential practices for the safe handling of gases

BOC, A LEADING SUPPLIER OF GAS, EQUIPMENT AND SAFETY PRODUCTS, CATERS TO A WIDE RANGE OF INDUSTRIAL SAFETY NEEDS WITH AN EXTENSIVE LINEUP OF PPE; HERE, THEY SHARE A GUIDE TO MANAGING THE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH VARIOUS INDUSTRIAL GASES AND ADVICE ON THEIR SAFE STORAGE, USE, AND MAINTENANCE

In the automotive industry, the use of various industrial gases such as liquid nitrogen (LN2), acetylene, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is common. These gases are essential for a range of processes but come with inherent risks that require careful handling. BOC, as a major supplier of gas, equipment, and safety products, emphasises the importance of strict safety protocols and the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to mitigate these risks effectively.

ESSENTIAL PPE FOR WORKPLACE SAFETY

BOC’s range of PPE is designed to protect workers from the specific hazards associated with handling industrial gases. This includes safety caps for head protection, high-impact face shields, and polycarbonate visors for eye safety, which also provide UV protection. Safety eyewear is also available to protect against dust, mist, and fumes, featuring anti-fog lenses for clear vision. To address respiratory and auditory risks, BOC supplies dust and chemical safety goggles, as well as a variety of ear protection from foam earplugs to earmuffs. Additionally, they provide water-resistant safety boots with steel toe caps to ensure comprehensive worker safety.

SAFE HANDLING GUIDELINES FOR INDUSTRIAL GASES

Liquid nitrogen: Liquid nitrogen is used in various applications but must be handled with care due to its extreme cold and the potential

for rapid expansion. Proper storage, labelling, and the use of equipment specifically designed for cryogenic temperatures are critical to prevent accidents. Effective ventilation is also essential to avoid creating oxygen-deficient environments.

Acetylene: Acetylene is widely used for welding and cutting but is highly flammable. It must be transported and stored securely, always in an upright position, and in wellventilated vehicles or areas. Ensuring cylinders are not placed on their side and allowing time for any acetylene to settle before use are basic but vital safety measures.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG): The use of LPG requires adherence to specific safety measures due to its flammable nature. Key

practices include ensuring that equipment like hoses and regulators are correctly connected, employing leak detection methods without the use of open flames, and following established emergency procedures. LPG cylinders should be stored in ventilated, cool areas away from ignition sources, and regularly inspected and maintained.

In addition, when handling gases involved in welding and cutting, awareness of potential hazards — electrical and magnetic fields, fuel gases, inert and cryogenic gases, radiation, and toxic fumes — is crucial. Identifying and assessing these hazards, followed by implementing safety measures, is essential.

While PPE plays a significant role in worker safety, it should complement other safety practices rather than be relied upon as the primary defence.

BOC’s emphasis on both providing comprehensive PPE and offering guidelines for the safe handling of gases underlines its commitment to maintaining high safety standards in New Zealand’s automotive workshops. By combining proper equipment use, regular maintenance, and staff training on safety protocols, workshops can ensure a safe working environment for all employees.

Preventing pain in the workshop: Tackling posture, RSI, and footwear safety

LONG HOURS ON THE JOB, REPETITIVE TASKS, AND STANDING ON HARD SURFACES CAN TAKE A SERIOUS TOLL ON AUTOMOTIVE TECHNICIANS: POOR POSTURE, REPETITIVE STRAIN INJURIES (RSIS), AND INADEQUATE FOOTWEAR CONTRIBUTE TO LONG-TERM DISCOMFORT AND EVEN WORKPLACE INJURIES

Beyond the obvious hazards associated with machinery and tools, workers face significant risks related to poor posture, RSIs, and inadequate footwear. Addressing these issues through proper guidelines and practices not only safeguards the well-being of employees but also enhances productivity and reduces downtime.

UNDERSTANDING WORK-RELATED MUSCULOSKELETAL DISORDERS (WRMSDS)

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders encompass a range of conditions affecting muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and other soft tissues. In automotive workshops, tasks such as repetitive bending, stretching, reaching, and static lifting can lead to these disorders, resulting in chronic pain and discomfort. The accumulation of microtraumas over time underscores the necessity for proactive ergonomic interventions.

ERGONOMIC INTERVENTIONS TO MITIGATE POSTURE-RELATED ISSUES

Implementing ergonomic solutions is crucial in addressing posture-related challenges in automotive workshops. Practical measures include: Workstation Design: Adjusting workbenches and tool placements to appropriate heights reduces unnecessary bending and reaching, promoting neutral postures.

Use of Ergonomic Tools: Equipping technicians with tools designed to minimise strain can significantly reduce the risk of RSIs.

Ergonomic hand tools with padded or specially formed handles allow for comfortable repetitive motions without undue risk of injury.

Task Rotation: Altering tasks among workers prevents prolonged exposure to repetitive motions, thereby reducing the likelihood of developing musculoskeletal issues.

Regular Breaks and Stretching: Encouraging short, frequent breaks combined with stretching exercises helps alleviate muscle tension and improves circulation.

THE ROLE OF SAFETY FOOTWEAR IN PREVENTING INJURIES

Footwear plays a pivotal role in ensuring safety within automotive workshops. Proper safety boots not only protect against mechanical injuries but also contribute to overall ergonomic well-being. Key considerations include:

Compliance with standards: In New Zealand, safety footwear should adhere to the AS/NZS 2210 standards, which outline requirements for protective footwear suitable for various occupational settings.

Slip Resistance: Workshops often have slippery, wet, or oily surfaces. Footwear with slip-resistant outsoles is essential to prevent slips, trips, and falls.

Proper Fit and Comfort: Ill-fitting shoes can lead to discomfort and exacerbate posture-related issues. It’s also an important point to note that not all workshop footwear requirements are the same: women’s feet are anatomically different to men’s and require

specially designed work boots. Ensuring that safety boots are of suitable size, fit, and comfort is crucial. Workers have a duty to comply with reasonable instructions to wear safety boots while working, and employers must provide footwear that meets these criteria.

TRAINING AND EDUCATION

Educating technicians about ergonomics and proper body mechanics is a proactive approach to preventing injuries. Educational initiatives can include:

Ergonomic Workshops: Conducting sessions that educate workers on the importance of posture, proper lifting techniques, and the use of ergonomic tools.

Vehicle and Driving Ergonomic Assessments: Providing information on correct sitting positions and environmental risks, such as fatigue management and sun protection, to prevent discomfort and injury during extended periods of sitting.

Regular Safety Briefings: Keeping staff informed about the latest safety protocols and encouraging open discussions about potential ergonomic hazards.

COLLABORATING WITH LOCAL PPE SUPPLIERS

Partnering with New Zealand-based safety and personal protective equipment (PPE) suppliers ensures that workshops have access to quality products that meet national standards. Local suppliers can provide:

Customised Solutions: Tailoring PPE to the specific needs of a workshop, considering the unique challenges faced by technicians.

Ongoing Support and Training: Offering guidance on the proper use and maintenance of PPE, as well as updates on new products and technologies.

Compliance Assurance: Ensuring that all provided equipment meets or exceeds New Zealand safety standards.

REGULAR AUDITS AND CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

Maintaining a culture of safety requires regular assessment and adaptation. Workshops should: Conduct Ergonomic Assessments: Regularly evaluating workstations and practices to identify potential ergonomic hazards and implement necessary adjustments.

Seek Worker Feedback: Encouraging technicians to report discomfort or suggest improvements fosters a collaborative approach to safety.

Autoblast: proactive rust protection for new vehicles

A SOLUTION FOR PROACTIVE DEALERSHIPS TO PREVENT THE RISK OF RUST IN THEIR INVENTORY

While rust is often associated with ageing vehicles, it can begin forming on new cars far sooner than many expect — especially in New Zealand’s climate. Overnight moisture can condense and linger, while salt-laden air accelerates the corrosion process. Vehicles parked for extended periods, particularly near the coast, are at even greater risk, explains David Kirkham, director of Autoblast, a specialist in underbody protection. Autoblast’s advanced underbody treatment solutions help safeguard new vehicles from premature rust. This is particularly beneficial for coastal vehicles used for towing boats or

jet skis, where exposure to saltwater can lead to visible corrosion in just months. Recognising this risk, some dealerships are taking a proactive approach by treating their inventory to ensure vehicles remain in pristine condition.

THE AUTOLAST SYSTEM: COMPREHENSIVE PROTECTION

The AutoLAST System is an industry-leading rust prevention process that begins with meticulous underbody preparation, followed by a five-part coating system designed to offer superior durability compared to traditional oilor wax-based treatments.

At its Auckland facility, Autoblast has expanded its capabilities, now operating five dedicated bays, including two downdraught spray booths and heavy-duty hoists. These state-ofthe-art upgrades provide a controlled environment, preventing overspray and ensuring a professional finish. While

Nissan refocuses strategy after ending talks with Honda

IN A NOTABLE SHIFT, NISSAN HAS UNVEILED A COMPREHENSIVE PLAN TO REJUVENATE ITS OPERATIONS, COINCIDING WITH THE RECENT CONCLUSION OF POTENTIAL BUSINESS INTEGRATION DISCUSSIONS WITH HONDA

The termination of these talks, including a proposed tripartite collaboration with Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, steers Nissan towards a strategic overhaul aimed at bolstering its position in the face of

electrification and market challenges.

The dialogue between Nissan and Honda, initially rooted in an MOU exploring business integration, unravelled due to differing visions on the integration’s structure. Despite the ceased integration efforts, Nissan is steadfast in its commitment to a partnership framework with Honda and Mitsubishi Motors, focusing on electrified vehicles and intelligence technologies to foster new value and maximize corporate benefits cooperatively.

private vehicle owners remain a key part of their customer base, Autoblast’s services are also widely used by commercial clients. Port companies, for example, have successfully extended fleet lifespans by incorporating Autoblast’s rust-prevention treatments.

TRUSTED BY IMPORTERS AND DEALERSHIPS

Importers and distributors are increasingly partnering with Autoblast to prevent rust in new vehicles before they reach customers. Many new cars spend time exposed to the elements after arriving by sea, leaving them vulnerable to surface oxidation. More dealerships now recognise the value of Autoblast’s expertise, particularly as traditional panel shops tend to focus on exterior bodywork rather than specialised underbody protection.

Beyond rustproofing, Autoblast offers a full suite of protective services, including media blasting, rust treatment, undersealing, epoxy painting, as well as the AutoLAST hybrid rustproofing system. Understanding that buyers expect a flawless finish, Autoblast also provides a tailored ‘new vehicle rust correction’ service, which removes any early signs of discolouration before vehicles are sold.

With ambitious goals for fiscal year 2026, Nissan plans substantial cost reductions totalling approximately 400 billion

Nissan is set on exploring new partnerships while optimising product and platform strategies, further demonstrated by its organisational restructuring efforts. A move towards a single-layer, non-officer framework aims to simplify decision-making processes and foster a more nimble corporate structure.

As the automotive industry navigates toward electrification, the termination of the Honda MOU signals a pivotal recalibration for Nissan, and its adaptation strategy, postHonda discussions, signifies a critical juncture for the company. Focused on efficiency, innovation, and strategic collaboration, Nissan’s redefined trajectory signals a dynamic approach to overcoming market volatility and capturing growth opportunities in the electrified era.

How Dayco innovation and the Ford Mustang revolutionised engine design

IN THE LATE 1970S, AMIDST AN OIL CRISIS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD, A GAME-CHANGING INNOVATION WAS BORN FROM NECESSITY, PERMANENTLY ALTERING

THE AUTOMOTIVE LANDSCAPE

This is the tale of how the Dayco serpentine belt came to revolutionize engine design, spurred by the development of the 1979 Ford Mustang and a global fuel crisis that demanded more fuelefficient vehicles.

The story begins against the backdrop of the 1970s oil crisis. Tensions in the Middle East, particularly between the United States and Iran, led to a significant shortage of oil. The embargo saw the price of fuel soar, compelling American automakers to rethink their approach to vehicle design.

Ford’s Mustang, an emblem of American muscle, faced a turning point. The models prior to 1979 had become bigger, heavier, and fuelthirsty, making them relics of an era suddenly out of step with the times. In response, Ford embarked on the design of its third-generation Mustang, aiming for a sportscar that was not only more fuel-efficient but could also keep the Mustang legacy alive.

The initial designs for the new Mustang included only four- and six-cylinder engines to save space and fuel. However, consumer demand and a resurgence in oil supply — thanks in part to American resources — compelled Ford to reconsider. Market pressure led to a late decision to include a V8 option in the new line-up. But this pivot presented a significant engineering challenge: the 302-cubic inch V8 engine simply did not fit in the designed engine space; it was an inch too big.

Faced with costly redesigns of the engine compartment, Ford turned to Dayco, its longterm engine belt and component supplier, for a solution. Dayco’s engineers proposed replacing the traditional four V-belts with a single belt system. Despite the revolutionary nature of this idea, and the risks it posed to traditional engineering practices, the pressing need for innovation led to its adoption.

The development of the serpentine belt by Dayco’s Springfield Technical Centre was no small feat. The team encountered several hurdles, including the creation of the belt’s unique rib design and managing the belt’s tension to prevent failure under load. Through creativity and technical skill, Dayco not only designed the belt but also developed the first spring-loaded tensioner in collaboration

with tensioner manufacturer Magna. This innovation reduced the engine’s length by two inches, enough to fit the V8 into the Mustang’s engine bay.

The introduction of the serpentine belt and the successful launch of the 1979 Mustang V8 were met with critical acclaim. This model set sales records and became a cult favourite among performance motoring enthusiasts. The Dayco innovation not only saved the Mustang V8 but also set a new standard in engine design. Today, the serpentine belt system is a staple in nearly all vehicle accessory drives, showcasing Dayco’s enduring impact on the automotive industry.

Beyond the technical innovation, this story reflects a broader narrative of adaptability and innovation in the face of adversity. From the turmoil of the oil crisis to the challenges of engineering a beloved American icon, the journey of the Dayco serpentine belt is a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of automotive pioneers.

Dayco’s contribution to the Ford Mustang goes beyond a single component; it symbolises a partnership that continues to thrive to this day. The company not only continues to supply Ford and other leading manufacturers with its serpentine belts but also celebrates its historic connection through the high-stakes world of the Australian Supercars Championship, where the Ford Mustang remains a competitive force.

The story of the Dayco serpentine belt and the Ford Mustang is a narrative of overcoming barriers, embracing change, and driving forward under any circumstances. It is a defining moment that reshaped an industry and reaffirmed that necessity is indeed the mother of invention.
