Bronzeville Senior featured on News for Safety Initita tive
By Dominick Williams Managing Editor, Bronzeville Campus
In November 2022, Mr. Qwaylin Miller, Class of 2023 from Urban Prep’s Bronzeville Campus was honored and featured on ABC7 Chicago News during their “Making Chicago Proud” segment. Mr. Miller was interviewed live by anchor Mark Rivera to discuss an organization and initiative that he started called “Safe Streets Chicago”. The schools involved are Urban Prep as a network along with Perspectives and Leo High School. “The concept was for a student-designed team to come up with some ideas and provide a perspectives on gun violence and provide safe spaces for students to talk about proactive change in our communities,” said Mr. Miller. Safe Streets Chicago's goal is to partner up with other organizations and campaigns to achieve effective change in our communities
said, Mr. Miller. He went on to explain that Mr. Brandon Lenore, who is the Director of Arcs at Urban Prep and responsible for community programs helped him get into the program. As the creed says “We have a responsibility to our families, community, and world”, said Mr. Miller. What started as a one-man operation has now become a network of people helping make this change. “All I can say is even with the negative publicity Urban Prep is receiving, you can never get or find a better school that genuinely cares about the development of young Black and brown young men,” said Mr. Miller. The Lions Roar will be following Mr. Miller and will provide updates regarding Block Clubs and community-building events in future issues as they move through the planning stages.

What’s UP in the world?
Why Does Saving Our School Matter?
to succeed, we have to change our behavior and approach. The staff at Urban Prep are tremendous. They will teach you a lot but they are not just in it for the money because they don't get a lot but they do it because they care for each and every one of their students. Every day when I walk into the class, I am greeted with a Hello, Good Morning and asked how I am feeling. They care about my physical health just as much as they care about my mental health.
all of the contacts and connections I have made because of them. Urban Prep has done a lot for me and my classmates and I have no doubt it can do even more for kids if it is allowed the ability to stay open. Urban Prep has proven that it has what it takes. I not only believe Urban Prep can do it, I know it can do it. But just like we say every day in our creed, We Believe, And we won’t stop!
By Joshua Smith Freelance Writer, Englewood Campus
Hello Everyone, my name is Mr. Smith, Pride of Accountability, Class of 2024, I attend the Urban Prep Englewood Campus. In addition to my experience at Englewood, I have been fortunate to visit the Downtown and Bronzeville Campuses. Everytime I go, they make me feel like family; this is the reason I believe Urban Prep is an amazing high school.
Being a student, I’ve had the chance to meet really eye opening people, coaches, and friends who have changed the way I see things. Urban Prep has helped me make great connections and has helped to put me in touch with great organizations like the Obama Youth Jobs Corps and Safe Streets Chicago. Through Safe Streets Chicago, I have been able to be a part of a team of student leaders to actively pursue and find ways to keep kids out of violence.
Every year I spend at Urban Prep, I learn something new whether that is how to complete a square using integers or solving problems, how we can help clean up our neighborhoods, or the best way to play against a team who plays in a power I offense. Urban Prep is just like any other high school, maybe even better because they don't just get us ready for college but they help to prepare us for life. They teach us time management, problem solving, and most importantly communication skills, which will help us to become functioning members of society. At Urban Prep we have a voice. We are reminded daily by our principals and teachers that if we want something we have to go after it. We have to advocate for ourselves and if we feel like we are not being put in the best place
At Urban Prep, I get to see a lot of intelligent Black role models, which is good to see because we don’t often see Black people portrayed in this light. They are often portrayed in a negative way so having them in my school everyday is meaningful. Being a student athlete at Urban Prep, I have had a lot of different coaches and everyone has helped motivate me and spur my love for football. They have taught me a lot of different things like why I have to keep good grades to play on the next level. Urban Prep has made me who I am and helped to lead me in a good direction.
I am thankful to Urban Prep not just for teaching me to become a great student-athlete but for

Urban Prep Hosts 1st Annual Network Alumni Day 2022
By Dominick Williams Managing Editor, Bronzeville Campus
On December 19th, Urban Prep hosted the 1st Annual Network Alumni Day. This event was an expansion of alumni day, which started at the Englewood Campus. Urban Prep Alumni from all campuses and classes dating back to the Englewood Inaugural Class of 2010 returned to speak with current students and enjoyed a day of fellowship.
The event was hosted at the Englewood Campus. All students from the Bronzeville and Downtown Campuses traveled to Englewood after community for the planned activities. To kick things off, students were split by class into two large groups to listen to panels of Alumni discuss their journey through Urban Prep, college and life. Alumni answered questions that students were allowed to submit via their Pride Leaders prior to the event.
Lunch was catered by Taquizas and students really seemed to have enjoyed the taco bar. Alumni had an opportunity to fellowship with their younger Urban Prep brothers and catch up with fomer classmates who were in attendance.
The day also included Kwanzaa celebrations, which were coordinated by Englewood Pride Leader, Mr. Johnny Dorsey. During the celebration, students honored women who have made impacts on their lives by presenting them with roses and a
The culminating event was the Alumni Day basketball games. Students from all campuses gathered in the gym to cheer on two games: Alumni Class of 2010-2015 vs. Alumni Class of 2016-2022 and Team UP staff vs. Current Students. Mr. Michael Taylor, Class of 2015 found his way on the microphone as the unoffical MC for each game. The excitement and energy of students cheering on their fellow classmates, teachers and alumni was heartwarming. It was a day filled with togetherness and unity as a network, not individual campuses. "What I liked most about Alumni Day was that the energy, love, and pride was definitely present and visible", said Mr. Dwayne Carter, Englewood Dean of Students.
The event concluded with Urban Prep Annual Holiday Gift distributions. Students each year recieve gifts such as Urban Prep vest, jacksets, hoodies and hats. Alumni assisted each campus with the distribution of the holiday gifts. Alumni Day 2022 was truly a day to remember and students from all campuses raved about how much they enjoyed the day of activities.
"I liked how all the alumni got to see each other and play basketball together. They were able to come back and speak to us and were able to see how they are achieving in both college and life," said Mr. Billy Haynes, Englewood Campus Class of 2023.

Meet Urban Prep Englewood's New Assistant Principal
By Tristan Hunter Staff Reporter, Englewood Campus
We started school this year with a new freshman class and new Principals at the Englewood Campus. I was fortunate to speak with and interview Dr. Davis, who is the new Assistant Principal at Englewood.
Dr. Frank Davis was born and raised in Chicago. When Dr. Davis first learned about Urban Prep around 2006, he thought it was amazing and different. He was a fan from the outside looking in. “They were dressed in a prestigious manner that you normally wouldn't see in a regular school,” said Dr. Davis. In 1995, Dr. Davis attended the Million Man March. At the time, he was pursuing his Masters in Computational Mathematics. While at the march, he recalled a speech by Minister Louis Farrakhan stating “What are you doing to help your people?”.
Dr. Davis stated that at that moment, he was inspired to change his course of study and work in the field of education for young Black men.
Later in 2018, Dr. Davis decided to return to school to pursue his doctorate in leadership. One of his reasons for furthering his education was to show his children that a Black man could reach the highest level of education. He graduated with his Ph.D. in leadership in 2021. He wants to be seen by young Black men, particularly at Urban Prep, as a mentor rather than an authority figure so that they will not falter in the face of any challenges that lie ahead of them. Dr. Davis is a long-time Chicago Bears fan noting that he really enjoyed the legendary Walter Payton’s play style.
Dr. Davis’ favorite quote is: “A man who stands for nothing will fall for

STUDENTS RECEIVE GOLD TIES
Mr. McGee received his gold tie in Africana Studies during the month of December. His nominator wrote “Mr. McGee is an exceptional young man. Mr. McGee is very humble and selfless. Mr. McGee does not seek to bring attention to himself but because of the way he presents himself makes people notice him. Mr. McGee is always prepared and on time for my class. Mr. McGee has extraordinary work etiquette. Mr. McGee takes great pride in his work and constantly seeks to improve. Mr. McGee currently has an "A" in my class. Therefore, he is an excellent candidate to be nominated for the gold tie.”
Mr. Beals received his gold tie in Pride. His nominator wrote, “This young man is known for demonstrating a relentlessness in his academic drive with being dedicated, committed, and focused daily. He shows respect to everyone. He is organized, neat, a self-starter, eager to learn and volunteer, and is motivated.”
Mr. Simmons received his gold tie in Honors Chemistry during the month of December. His nominator wrote, “Mr. Simmons takes time out of his studies to help his peers, showing his commitment to his brothers. ”
Teachers of The Month: Urban Prep Students Speak!
Mrs. Lina Beatancourt teaches Spanish and a section of Honors Spanish at the Urban Prep Englewood Campus. Mrs. Beatancourt has been working at Urban Prep for one year. Students expressed that they love the energy she exhibits toward them. Students stated that she is committed to her work as a second language instructor for young Black men. She approaches her work each day with a positive outlook, which inspires students to do well.
Ms. Danielle Roche teaches African American Literature, English Survey, and World Literature at the Urban Prep Downtown Campus. This is her first year at Urban Prep. Ms. Roach was selected for teacher of the month by the students because of the constant hard work she puts into making sure students understand the curriculum that she is teaching. Ms. Roach shows so much support for students by being patient with students. This is why the Downtown Campus has selected her as this month's teacher of the month.
*Students at each campus are polled by the Lion's Roar staff to identify their campus' Teacher of The Month
Ms. Bernice Hampton teaches Honors Pre-Calculus and Algebra II w/Trigonomery in addition to an honors section of both subjects at the Urban Prep Bronzeville Campus. Ms. Hampton has been working at Urban Prep for four years. Let’s be truthful, math teachers ever since elementary school have had a bad reputation for being the least favorite teachers. But Ms. Hampton cares about her students. She supports her students inside and outside the classroom no matter the reason. Everyone is not fortunate to have a thanksgiving dinner, but she changed that. In November, Ms. Hampton made thanksgiving dinners and feed over 120 students. She is truly changing the narrative and for that, the students of the Bronzeville Campus have voted her teacher of the month.

Mr. Cotton is a skilled writer with a vivid imagination that I am honored to teach and see what his imagination can illustrate and express. This young man is an excellent student who his peers can look up to and someone who models what an Urban Prep young man should look like.” For Mr. Cotton’s gold tie in Pride, his nominator wrote “ This young man is an awesome candidate for a gold tie. He models the creed exceptionally well. He shows fine examples of integrity and accountability inside and outside my classroom. He does all of his work in my class and is always providing his assistance when he can.
Mr. O’Bryant received his gold tie in Chemistry during the month of November. His nominator wrote, “This young man is dedicated, committed, and focused each day he is in attendance and holds himself to a high level of academic accountability by working to earn and maintain high accuracy grades on activities. He also works hard to contribute to the school community by promoting healthy school culture and facilitating meetings with school clubs and their sponsors. He is seen behind the scenes doing the work that helps create bonds with student-led activities and events. Mr. Ottley received his gold tie in Spanish during the month of November. His nominator wrote, “This student has shown dedication, commitment, and focus throughout the entire school year so far.
