In November 2022, Mr. Qwaylin Miller, Class of 2023 from Urban Prep’s Bronzeville Campus was honored and featured on ABC7 Chicago News during their “Making Chicago Proud” segment. Mr. Miller was interviewed live by anchor Mark Rivera to discuss an organization and initiative that he started called “Safe Street Chicago”. The schools involved are Urban Prep as a network along with Perspective and Leo High School. “The idea was for a student-designed team to come up with some ideas or perspectives on gun violence and provide safe spaces for students to talk about proactive change in our communities,” said Mr. Miller. Safe Streets Chicago's goal is to partner up with other organizations and campaigns to achieve effective change in our communities said, Mr. Miller. He went on to explain that Mr. Brandon Lenore, who is the Director of Arc at Urban Prep and responsible for community programs helped him get into the program. As the creed says “We have a responsibility to our families, community, and world”, said Mr. Miller. What started as a one-man operation has now become a network of people helping make this change. “All I can say is even with all the negative publicity Urban Prep is receiving, you can never get or find a better school that genuinely cares about the development of young Black and brown young men,” said Mr. Miller. The Lions Roar will be following Mr. Miller and will provide updates regarding Block Clubs and community-building events in future issues as they move through the planning stages.
