egún el informe del Banco Mundial, el crecimiento se está desacelerando debido a la elevada inflación y la reducción de las inversiones. Es importante tomar el pulso de la primera feria de mercado de este año 2024 El Consumer Eletronics Show en Las Vegas, Estados Unidos (CES) que anticipa amenazas, oportunidades, tendencias y cambios que intervendrán en nuestra industria a lo largo de este 2024. No solo en materia de tecnología, contenidos sino, de sectores como el doblaje, la producción, la distribución, la publicidad y el marketing.

DOS EVENTOS CLAVE EN MIAMI, ESTADOS UNIDOS NATPE GLOBAL y CONTENTAMERICAS son eventos que puntean pero están amenazados. “Voy a ocuparme de mi nuevo cargo como directora general de Desarrollo Cultural y Creativo del Ministerio de Cultura de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires. Reportando a la ministra de cultura, Gabriela Ricardes, en el nuevo gobierno de Javier Milei en Argentina”.

L

a contratación de Carolina como gerente general de una asociación naciente Worldwide Audiovisual Women’s Association, (WAWA por sus siglas en inglés), fue el paso decisivo para llevar a esta asociación al nivel que su fundadora y soñadora, la empresaria CEO de UNIVERSAL CINERGÍA, Liliam Hernández buscaba.

OBJETIVOS CUMPLIDOS EN WAWA Potenciar las propuestas de networking para las asociadas. “En enero de 2021, aún estábamos en la pandemia y una de las tareas primordiales fue impulsar los negocios de las asociadas e incrementar la nómina de miembras” explica en esta entrevista con TVMAS. Carolina, tiene gran experiencia como productora y una trayectoria no solo en el sector cultural, sino también en producción de festivales de cine y mercados.

Diseñó WAWA Business Fórum, que ella consolidó en tres ediciones un mercado en línea, en el que las miembras pudieron comercializar sus contenidos terminados y presentar sus proyectos a tomadores de decisiones.

DISEÑO DE LOS INSPIRING MINDS “Mantuvimos la modalidad en línea en pleno Covid-19 para ser inclusivas” y dice que “también diseñé estos encuentros Inspiring Minds, convocando a mujeres protagonistas para inspirar a otras mujeres. Mi objetivo era abrir un diálogo con profesionales de alto nivel. Y este objetivo lo logré”.

ACERCAMIENTO ENTIDADES DE EUROPA. EGEDA Y PLATINO INDUSTRIA “Junto a EGEDA y Platino Industria hicimos los encuentros para fortalecer las coproducciones entre nuestras asociadas. Y el Mentoring Program, de formación que me dio satisfacción porque gracias al aporte del Programa Ibermedia, el Ministerio de Cultura de Panamá y Mip Cancún, junto a Lifetime pudimos dar capacitación a 12 mujeres de toda Iberoamérica para el fortalecimiento de proyectos” dice con el entusiasmo que la caracteriza.

CREADORA DEL MENTORING PROGRAM “Lo diseñé para devolver a la comunidad audiovisual la oportunidad que nos dieron y abrir la puerta a otras mujeres talentosas que vienen detrás. Creo que todas deberíamos tener conciencia colaborativa”.

Esta mujer brillante cierra el 2023 con una gestión como dice “Me voy por la puerta grande de WAWA tras una gerencia que recibí con 120 socias, y la dejo con 550 asociadas en más de 30 países y una marca respetada y reconocida. Nunca me ha gustado estar en la zona de confort”. En esta nueva posición, que considera un logro personal, tiene en su cabeza muchos proyectos para el sector cultural donde ha cosechado gran reconocimiento.

CIERRE CON BROCHE DE ORO EN MIP CANCÚN Así ella, durante la gerencia de WAWA llevó a Mip Cancún 2023 a siete mujeres de España, México, República Dominicana, Chile, Argentina e Israel. “Fue una satisfacción, porque previo al mercado de Cancún estalló la guerra en Israel, y lograr trasladar a las participantes al mercado fue toda una proeza”.

En la décima edición del evento WAWA entregó el premio Mujer del Año, a tres socias: Fidela Navarro, CEO de Dopamine Content; Carmen Larios, SVP Content and Marketing de A&E Networks Latin America; y Selina Nederhand, SVP & Co-Networks Head of Content Strategy de Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Mi tarea es incentivar y potenciar la industria audiovisual en la Ciudad de Buenos Aires. Los panelistas también logran entregar un divertido programa bajo el liderazgo del talentoso Carlos Mesber, ya conocido como ‘el monstruo de la creatividad’.

Recordemos que fue el creador y productor del exitoso “Suelta la sopa”, un programa que estuvo 8 años en pantalla en Telemundo acumulando 2,117 capítulos en 8 temporadas. A tan solo 4 meses después de haber desaparecido el programa, el creativo productor presentó en el Up Front de UNIVISION otra de sus exitosas propuestas de entretenimiento “Siéntese quien pueda”.

El programa se estreno en UNIMAS el 22 de agosto y rápidamente dio el salto a UNIVISION estuvo a las 11 de la mañana, después a las 2 de la tarde y ahora estrena la segunda temporada el 8 de enero en un mejor horario a las 3 de la tarde, luego de 355 programas. Estas proezas, capacidades y talentos son reconocidas por el público y la industria.

Así los datos, el mercado chileno de la TV Paga registró su séptimo trimestre consecutivo en caída. A fin del Q4 2021, último trimestre con crecimiento de clientes, la industria tenía 3,45 millones.

A young woman named Fatmagül (Beren Saat) from a humble coastal town sets out to seek revenge on a group of men who raped her. Forever changed by the incident, Fatmagül is abandoned by her fiancé Mustafa (Fırat Çelik) and forced to marry one of the rapists.

Let's talk about this year 2023. “This year we are focusing on our newest titles such as FAREWELL LETTER, THAT GIRL which are prime time titles from 2022 and LOVE AND HOPE which a daily title that is still on air.

We will also continue to pitch THREE SISTERS which is still available in a few territories in LATAM such as Chile and Argentina”.

New programs for 2024. “We have 2 shows coming out soon, the dates are still to be determined. We are still working on the English names but one of them is called INCI TANELERİ and the other one is an adaptation from the title TILL DEATH a Lebanese drama series. Ha sido un tremendo éxito la incursión de los contenidos en estos territorios y muchos actores turcos comenzaron a participar en proyectos internacionales. Beatriz explica que “Recientemente, el contenido turco comenzó a producirse directamente para audiencias internacionales, con un enfoque de producción totalmente turco e incluso involucrando colaboraciones internacionales. Esto demuestra que la industria cinematográfica y televisiva turca se ha convertido en una industria robusta. Hay una verdad innegable y es que la cultura turca y latinoamericana estan estrechamente vinculadas. Las series turcas casi se han vuelto legendarias en todos los países donde se transmiten y han alcanzado una popularidad sin precedentes. En el pasado, cuando se veían telenovelas latinoamericanas en Turquía, se decía que las calles estaban vacías, lo que demuestra su inmensa popularidad. Así, podemos decir que las similitudes en los hábitos de visualización entre el público latinoamericano y el turco eran evidentes hace años. Es seguro decir que casi no hay ningún país en América Latina que no haya conocido los dramas turcos. INTER MEDYA, a company that has deciphered the cultures and markets of television fiction “LEYLIFER, the co-production of CARACOL INTERNATIONAL and INTER MEDYA, has begun to receive significant attention in Latin America and we are very excited about our first project with MEGA GLOBAL ENTERTAINMENT (MGE)” How long have you been responsible for the company's sales, distribution, and acquisitions?

It's been more than 10 years since I became a part of the Inter Medya family. In my role, I am responsible for sales in U.S. Hispanic, Latin America, Brazil, Italy, and Spain.

Additionally, I serve as the Vice President of the company, overseeing content acquisition and sales. Since joining Inter Medya, I have witnessed the rapid growth and expansion of both the global dominance of Turkish content and the company's business volume.

What are the main changes in the distribution business since you started to date?

As I mentioned earlier, both distributors and buyers have gained significant experience in the international distribution of Turkish dramas. It can be said that everyone now understands what international viewers seek in Turkish content. Of course, this can vary over time, and there is no definitive formula. Trends and demands are constantly evolving. However, over time, we have learned to track these trends and adapt accordingly. In line with this, we take care to offer content that can respond to different customer demands and regularly update our catalog in this regard. Unfortunately, economic crises have been prevalent in many countries recently, and while purchasing power may decline, channels consistently turn to Turkish content. Despite navigating through challenging and uncertain times, such as the pandemic, the Turkish TV and film industry has not lost its global dominance; in fact, it could be said that it served as an escape for viewers during the difficult period of lockdown. On the production side, there is a continuous commitment to self-improvement in Turkish dramas. The production quality of our series and films has consistently increased, and story telling has reached a universal dimension.

What was your vision for introducing Inter Medya content to Latin America and the US Hispanic market - a key destination for Telenovelas, dramas, and series?

The undeniable truth is how closely linked Turkish and Latin American cultures are. This was known from the early days, but whether such a significant success could be anticipated is not certain. This is because there is a tremendous interest in Turkish dramas in Latin America, and Turkish series, almost becoming legendary in every country where they are aired and have achieved unprecedented popularity. In the past, when Latin American series were watched in Turkey, the streets were said to be empty, demonstrating their immense popularity. Thus, we can say that the similarities in viewing habits between Latin America and Turkish audiences were evident years ago. It's safe to say that there is hardly any country in Latin America that hasn't been introduced to Turkish dramas.

Our series find a place in the prime time slots of channels in Latin America and enjoy great success.

In a highly dynamic industry, what have been your strategies to achieve success in LATAM and the Hispanic Market in the US? We have very warm relationships with our business partners in both U.S. Hispanic and Latin American markets. We are in constant communication, and furthermore, we conduct aggressive marketing in the region. We participate in all small and large markets in the region. In addition to the markets we attend, we meet with many customers outside these markets, maintaining continuous communication.

In fact, in Latin America, customers who wish to acquire Turkish content closely follow the Turkish drama sector and approach us for collaboration.

OTT (streaming) have modified not only the ways of producing but also of distributing. What are the changes that you have taken in your responsibility to satisfy traditional TV and platform buyers?

Digital platforms have rapidly become a significant part of our lives in recent times. Series produced specifically for these platforms have taken a more edgy, bold, and brave approach. These series and films have brought a new interpretation to Turkish storytelling. We have included many successful examples of these series in our catalog, and because they bring a fresh perspective to Turkish dramas, we refer to them as "New Generation Turkish Series."

These productions prompted us to update our distribution strategy, attracted new customers to our portfolio, and introduced us to countries that had not previously shown interest in Turkish content. The success achieved by these series on digital platforms has facilitated the introduction of Turkish content to diverse audiences, extending this success to traditional channels. Similarly, open channels that already broadcast Turkish content have started to acquire mini-series.

What were the most successful titles in 2023 in AMERICA? And what new ones do you bring for 2024?

We successfully completed the sales of almost every series this year in Latin America, including THE GIRL OF THE GREEN VALLEY, DECEPTION, HICRAN, SCORPION, POISON IVY, AZIZ, and TUZAK. Most recently, LEYLIFER, the co-production of Caracol International and Inter Medya, has started to receive significant attention in Latin America. Additionally, we are in discussions with several digital platforms, particularly for our mini-series THE IVY and DREAMS AND REALITIES. We are very excited about our first project with Mega Global Entertainment (MGE) for 2024. Let's see what the new year has in store for us!

“Al principio, nuestro catálogo estaba formado principalmente por series dramáticas y largometrajes turcos. Pero se ha ido ampliando y diversificando. “Nuestro liderazgo en coproducción continuó en América Latina, con la firma del acuerdo de entre Inter Medya y Caracol International como la primera empresa conjunta de producción entre América Latina y Turquía. “En 2019 formamos un equipo de producción interno, incursionando en la creación de contenidos para plataformas digitales. ¿Cómo es el acuerdo con Telemundo Global Studios y con Caracol Internacional?.

En 2021, formamos una asociación basada en ideas compartidas e identificamos con éxito proyectos viables.

Ya han cobrado vida los dos primeros proyectos: HICRAN y BLUE CAGE. HICRAN, una serie diaria, consta de 121 episodios internacionales. El primer contenido premium de este acuerdo, BLUE CAGE, consta de 74 episodios.

El primer proyecto del acuerdo de coproducción con Caracol Internacional, que marca el primer acuerdo de coproducción entre América Latina y Turquía, LEYLIFER, ha completado su rodaje con 120 episodios de 45 minutos cada uno. Por último, nos hemos embarcado en una alianza de producción con Mega Global Entertainment (MGE) en Chile en América Latina. In its initial years, Inter Medya operated as a distribution company that sourced content from abroad for newly emerging channels in Turkey. “As the popularity of Turkish content increased worldwide over time, instead of importing foreign content from abroad, we started exporting Turkish content to international markets. Currently, we are a company that sells Turkish content in around 160 countries. In the beginning, our catalog mainly consisted of Turkish drama series and feature films. Over time, our catalog has expanded and diversified.

We now offer content from various genres, including classic drama series, mini-series, comedy films, reality TV. show formats, horror films, and romantic comedy series etc”.

Which were the first countries to acquire programs and which genres?

The sale of the first Turkish TV series took place in Kazakhstan about 15 years ago.

After a quiet period, a Turkish TV series craze began in the Balkans and the Middle East in 2009-2010. During those years, we started to shift and expand our operations specifically for the international sale of Turkish TV series. Of course, we began with the highly successful sales of our classic Turkish dramas, and we still have a strong presence in these regions. Classic Turkish dramas, with a focus on love and family elements, continue to experience high demand in these areas. Additionally, there is also significant demand for feature films and mini-series.

What have been the company's innovations and the key processes of the company's growth?

Since 1992, our company's business model has changed and evolved, encompassing a journey that spans 32 years. Starting as a company that initially sourced content from abroad for Turkey, Inter Medya has transformed over the years into a company distributing Turkish content and culture to 160 countries. What began as a one-person venture has now grown to include 2 offices and a team of 38 individuals. From 2014 onwards, our sales to Latin America, which is currently our main market, began rapidly expanding the market share for both Turkish dramas and Inter Medya.

In 2016, Inter Medya established its own creative team, delving into the development of TV show formats and making necessary investments to create its first proprietary game show format. Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2017, Inter Medya completely revamped its corporate identity. In 2019, we formed an in-house production team, venturing into content creation for digital platforms with the motivation to produce content”

“We undertook the production of three mini-series for one of Turkey's leading digital platforms. In 2021, Inter Medya, having moved its production department into a separate company and office structure, strides confidently with a young and dynamic production team to create ambitious productions. In 2020, alongside the rise of digital platforms, Inter Medya took on the distribution of emerging mini-series, creating a category called "New Generation Turkish Series" to promote these series worldwide. We obtained a patent for this name and continue our efforts to turn it into a brand. In 2021, through an agreement with Telemundo Global Studios, Inter Medya implemented the first co-production agreement between U.S. Hispanic and Turkey.

Inter Medya's leadership in co-production continued in Latin America, with the signing of the co-production agreement between Inter Medya and Caracol International as the first production joint venture between Latin America and Turkey. In what year did you enter this sector, what was the first production and does it mention, how many episodes and the approximate cost.

Co-production has been an area of focus and development for us since 2019. In 2021, we formed a partnership based on shared ideas and successfully identified feasible projects, establishing the right formula. The first two projects of the first co-production agreement between U.S. Hispanic and Turkey, signed with Telemundo Global Studios, have already come to life: HICRAN and BLUE CAGE. HICRAN, a daily series, consists of 121 international episodes. The first premium content of this agreement, BLUE CAGE, comprises 74 episodes. The first project of the joint production agreement with Caracol International, marking the first co-production agreement between Latin America and Turkey, LEYLIFER, has completed filming with 120 episodes of 45 minutes each. Con más de 25 años en la industria del entretenimiento, Silvana ha sido parte del crecimiento de importantes corporaciones y abrió el mercado de exportación de las telenovelas y series de Argentina en el mercado mundial.

Fundadora de empresas con iniciativas innovadoras, algunas no lograron éxito, otras sí. Y han sido punta de lanza para llegar a Glowstar Media.
