51FNQR recruits put though their paces The 51st Battalion, Far North Queensland Regiment serves as a Regional Force Surveillance Unit (RFSU). It is responsible for reconnaissance and surveillance tasks in remote regions of Far North Queensland from Cardwell to the Torres Strait, Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf across to the Northern Territory border. The Battalion’s area of responsibility covers some 640,000 square kilometres. A major portion, approximately 30 per cent, of the Battalion’s members are Indigenous Australians, many from isolated Indigenous communities throughout Cape York and the Gulf Country as well the Torres Straits.
