TIFF’s heart

If a festival could have a heart, TIFF’s beating heart would be our audience. Tromsø International Film Festival’s 30th anniversary will be a celebration of the TIFF audience. It’s the TIFF-goers who have always embraced our film program, no matter how strange, weird, slow or demanding films we might present. If the movie was shot in a country you hardly ever heard about, it’s just a trigger to explore more. The TIFF audience is always curious, ready to look into new worlds, traverse a number of cultures and investigate unexpected depths. Our crowd easily overcomes obstacles like complete darkness, cold winter storms, snowdrifts and icy pavements to reach the cinemas to watch 1, 2 or maybe 20 TIFF-films every January. You have shown us that you love films and TIFF, and that you have a true #tifflove. We are greatful for having such an open-minded audience. This makes us brave, willing to take risks and program artistic films that might be both challenging and inspiring to all of us.

But remember, a challenge is something you should never face alone. Nobody shold be left out in the cold. Bring a friend, someone who never attended TIFF, and head for the warm cinema togehter.

Thank you for 30 years of #tifflove Transformation is the grand theme for this year’s festival program. Imagine that, after years of insisting that there is no, and really should be no grand theme for any festival program. Repeating each year that there are only themes in plural: Strands, sidebars, spotlights, retrospectives, focus - these are the tools programmers have to organize and contextualize single films into a more or less meaningful whole known as «the program». But in 2020 we have never been closer to having a grand theme at TIFF. Activism is all about shaping change, first envisioning, then striving to make a better world. Cinema has always played and will continue to play an important role in articulating and documenting social change. The choice to focus on film from Ukraine confirms this idea, exemplified here through the artistic endeavours of a new generation of filmmakers with the urge and the tools to get a handle on state of constant flux that has formed them. Transformation is the goal, the very essence of truth and reconciliation. Thus our opening film one day in the life of noah piaguttuk sets the bar for the grand theme of TIFF 2020.

Meanwhile, on an admittedly lesser scale, TIFF as an organization also undergoes a transformation, with Lisa Therese Hoen having stepped into the role of Festival Director. I wish her the best of luck. At the same time, I want to thank everyone – my colleagues, the staff, the volunteers, the board, all the partners of the festival, and last, but not least, the audience – for 21 amazing years of working together to bring the best possible films from the whole world, including our own region, to the screens of the Tromsø International Film Festival.

Kjære Tromsø internasjonale filmfestival! Dear Tromsø International Film Festival

Jeg ser veldig frem til å få åpne årets utgave av Tromsø internasjonale filmfestival. Og først må jeg få lov til å si GRATULERER! I år har TIFF jubileum. I 30 har festivalen nemlig vært en fantastisk møteplass i magiske Tromsø. TIFF er på mange måter åpningen av filmåret i Norge, og setter standarden for hva året bringer oss. Jeg har vært på TIFF mange ganger, og det er alltid stas å komme tilbake.

I tre tiår har TIFF bydd på små og store opplevelser. På filmkunst, og uforglemmelige øyeblikk. I tillegg har festivalen vært en viktig og sentral pådriver for utviklingen av bransjen gjennom både diskusjoner og samtaler for stadig flere publikummere.

Regjeringen har et mål om å legge til rette for flest mulig stemmer, flest mulig historier. Da må vi ha sterke filmmiljøer flere steder i landet. Det bidrar til økt konkurranse, større mangfold og rett og slett bedre kvalitet i norske filmer og serier.

Så vil jeg benytte anledningen til å takke Martha Otte for en fremragende innsats som festivalsjef i så mye som halvparten av TIFFs historie. Takk for at du har gjort TIFF til en festival med en spesiell plass i både filmelskernes og filmbransjens hjerte. Og ikke minst, velkommen til roret Lisa Hoen! Gratulerer med en viktig og ikke minst morsom jobb.

Gratulerer med jubileet – vi sees til feiringen! I really look forward to opening this year’s Tromsø International Film Festival. But first, I would like to congratulate TIFF on their 30-year anniversary. For three decades, this has been a wonderful film festival in magical Tromsø. In many ways, TIFF marks the start of the Norwegian film year and sets the standard for upcoming events. I have had the honor of being at TIFF many times, and it is always a pleasure to return.

For thirty years, TIFF has been the place for experiences and unforgettable moments. In addition, the film festival has contributed to developing the industry through discussions and dialogue for an ever-increasing audience.

The Norwegian Government wants to facilitate a variety of voices in the fields of arts and culture. If we are to reach that goal, we need strong film environments all over Norway. That is how we contribute to increased competition, diversity and higher quality for Norwegian films and TV-series.

I would like to use my little column to thank Martha Otte for a tremendous job as head of TIFF. Thank you for making TIFF a festival that holds a special place in the heart of both the film industry and film lovers. And welcome to Lisa Hoen! Congratulations on an important and entertaining job.

Når verden åpner for nord When the world opens to the north

Noen oppgaver gleder man seg virkelig til. Det er en stor glede for meg å få lov til å gratulere Tromsø og Tromsø internasjonale filmfestival (TIFF) med 30-årsjubileet – vi er stolte over hva dere har fått til i lag!

For 30. gang starter vi det nasjonale filmåret i nord – med landets største filmfest, TIFF. TIFF er en unik og attraktiv møteplass for den nasjonale og internasjonale filmbransjen, hvor kvalitetsfilm og filmpolitikk er i fokus.

TIFF er en viktig brikke i landsdelens satsing på film gjennom å åpne verden for nord, og nord for verden. Festivalen er internasjonal i alle ledd og på alle vis, og er et fyrtårn i det arktiske landskapet. Det får vi ikke minst oppleve ved å bli bedre kjent med filmvenner fra Canada gjennom åpningsfilmen one day in the life of noah piugattuk, som en parallell til vår egen historie med fornorskningspolitikk.

En like viktig brikke er TIFF for den filminteresserte innbygger. Og de er det blitt utrolig mange flere av i løpet av de siste 30 årene, takket være nettopp TIFF. Festivalen har åpnet øynene for kvalitetsfilm langt utover det som når et vanlig publikum via strømmetjenester, TV og ordinære kinoprogram. Dette er berikende for den enkelte, og bidrar sterkt til økt livskvalitet og bolyst i vår region i en tid på året hvor det før bare var solens tilbakekomst å glede seg til.

Vi vil berømme festivalen for å være i front i utvikling av nye tematiske arenaer som matcher behovet for fornyelse hos både arrangør, bransje og publikum. I år møter vi nyvinningen FICTION NORWAY, som blir et spennende nytt utstillingsvindu for norsk film under TIFF.

Jeg ønsker dere alle noen strålende arktiske jubileumsdøgn, fulle av gylne filmopplevelser! One can really look forward to certain tasks. It is a great pleasure to be allowed to congratulate the city of Tromsø and the Tromsø International Film Festival (TIFF) with the 30th Anniversary – we are proud of what you have achieved!

For the 30th time, the national film year is kicked off in the north, with the country’s largest film festival, TIFF. TIFF’s focus on quality films and film politics makes it a unique and attractive meeting place for both the national and international film industry.

This festival is an important part of the region’s commitment to film – by opening up the world to the north, and the north to the world. TIFF is international at all segments and in every way and is a landmark in the Arctic landscape. We will experience this when being acquainted with film friends from Canada, through the opening film one day in the life of noah piugattuk. We here see a parallel to our own history of Norwegian assimilation policy.

TIFF plays a significant role for the movie-interested citizen. And the number of film enthusiasts has increased over the past 30 years, thanks to TIFF. The festival is an eye-opener when it comes to quality films far beyond what reaches the regular audience through streaming, television and in cinemas. It is enriching for the individual, and greatly contributes to increased quality of life in our region, and this in the time of the year when the return of the sun was the only thing we used to look forward to.

We want to commend the festival for being at the forefront of developing new thematic arenas that match the need for renewal for organizers, industry and audiences alike. This year we meet FICTION NORWAY, an exciting new showcase for Norwegian film at TIFF.

Kjære nye og gamle TIFF-ere Dear new and old friends of TIFF

Vi i Tromsø internasjonale filmfestival er veldig stolte av at vi i 30 år har fått muligheten til å prege byen med film og festival på tampen av mørketida. Det at så mange fra fjern og nær har tatt imot vårt program med åpent sinn gjør oss utrolig takknemlige. Dere har latt dere bevege og begeistre av film gjennom alle disse årene.

Det er samspillet mellom et interessert og sosialt publikum, byen, filmbransjen og alle dyktige krefter i og utenfor organisasjonen som gjør TIFF unik og til landets største publikumsfestival. Ikke minst bidrar flere hundre frivillige hvert år til å skape vinternes høydepunkt og den gode festivalstemninga. Takk for innsatsen!

TIFF opplever i disse tider større endringer. Vår kjære festivalsjef gjennom 15 år, Martha Otte, takker av og avslutter med stil som årets programsjef. Takk for ditt brennene engasjement for filmen og for byen, Martha! Samtidig vil vi ønske ny festivalsjef, Lisa Hoen, hjertelig velkommen til å lede en av Norges viktigste kulturaktører. Vi vet at TIFF, også med sin nye ledelse, vil fortsette med å engasjere og berøre gjennom å formidle kvalitetsfilm, og vi ønsker at stadig flere skal dele disse magiske filmdagene i januar sammen med oss.

Vi gleder oss til de neste tiår i lag, og for at vi sammen skal feire 30 årsdagen med en stor folkefest i byen.

God festival! We are proud that Tromsø International Film Festival has annually, for 30 years, made our city vibrant and lively in the period towards the end of the polar night. It makes us so grateful that the audience – both local and visiting – has attended our festival and embraced our program with an open mind. Through these years, you have been both moved and enthused by the films.

It is the interaction between an interested and social audience, the city, the film industry and the resources outside and within our organization, which makes TIFF both unique and the most attended film festival in the country. 300 volunteers participate and contribute to make this the highlight of the winter and to create a fantastic festival vibe. Thanks for your contribution!

Our festival is experiencing some changes these days. Our beloved festival director through the last 15 years, Martha Otte, is stepping back, though with style as this year’s Program Director. Thanks for your extraordinary dedication both to films and to Tromsø. At the same time, we are welcoming our new festival director, Lisa Hoen, to lead one of Norway’s most important cultural institutions. I know for sure that TIFF, also with its new leadership will continue to engage and move with the films we screen, and we are eager to get more people to join us in these magic film days every winter.

We are looking forward to the next decades together with all of you, and to celebrate our 30th anniversary with a great jubilee throughout the whole week.

Til lykke med de 30! Happy 30th anniversary!

For tretti år siden tok noen modige mennesker, med Hans Henrik Berg i Tromsø kino i spissen, en viktig beslutning. Den norske filmfestivalen var bestemt å ligge i Haugesund og ikke Tromsø. Dette var ikke Tromsø kommune og Tromsø kino enig i, og startet like godt vår egen Tromsø internasjonale filmfestival. Resten er historie.

Og resten er framtid! For en har ikke bygget festivalen gjennom å se seg tilbake. Kanskje er det nettopp det som har vært suksessen: Aldri se seg tilbake, alltid framover.

For meg blir dette en ny og annerledes festival. Etter flere år i styret, skal jeg nå ta et steg til siden. Det er vemodig på en god måte. Det er også vemodig at 2020 er siste året med Martha Otte i sjefsstolen. Tenk, i femten år har Martha ledet festivalen, til den suksessen den er. Det er bare ett ord for dette: Imponerende! Jeg er stolt over å ha fått lov å være med på laget med deg, Martha, og resten av den dyktige staben i TIFF. Martha, vi er deg evig takknemlig for innsatsen du har lagt ned. Fra hele byen: Av hjertet takk!

Tretti år og framtiden skal feires! I god TIFF-ånd er det ikke rød løper og kjendisfest som den fremragende staben legger opp til, nå med Lisa og Astrid i spissen. Alle ønskes velkommen til åpning i hjertet av Tromsø, Stortorget. Som vertskommune nærmest sprekker vi av stolthet over å være en del av TIFF, og bidra til folkefesten denne uka.

Så tilbake til framtiden. Kjære Lisa, lykke til med det viktige vervet du har påtatt deg. Tromsø trenger TIFF, og vi er glade for at nettopp du tar over roret. Du vil lede eventyret TIFF på en suveren måte.

Kjære TIFF – til lykke med de 30! Kjære Tromsø - til lykke med TIFF! Thirty years ago, a group of brave people lead by Hans Henrik Berg, the manager of Tromsø cinema, made an important choice. It had been decided elsewhere that the Norwegian Film Festival would be held in Haugesund, not Tromsø. The municipality and cinema in Tromsø did not agree on this, so they went ahead and started their own festival: the Tromsø International Film Festival. The rest is history.

And the rest is the future! Because one does not build a festival by looking backwards. Perhaps that is what has been the key to its success: Never looking back, always looking forward.

For me, this will be a new and different festival. After several years on the board, I will now step aside. It’s a little sad, but in a good way. It’s also sad that 2020 will be the last year with Martha Otte at the helm of the festival. For fifteen years Martha has run the festival and lead it to be as successful as it is today. There is only one word to say about this: Impressive! I’m proud to have been a part of your team, Martha, alongside the rest of the terrific TIFF staff. We continue to be eternally grateful for the effort and work you’ve put in to make this festival what it is. On behalf of our entire city: Thank you, Martha!

Thirty years, as well as what’s to come needs to be celebrated! In true TIFF spirit, there won’t be any red carpets or celebrity-studded parties to celebrate this anniversary. The festival staff, now lead by Lisa and Astrid, would like to invite everyone to a glorious opening of the festival at the very heart of Tromsø, at Stortorget. As the hosting municipality, we are bursting with pride to be a part of TIFF and look forward to contributing to this wonderful celebration all week long.

So, back to the future. Dear Lisa, good luck with this important task you have taken upon yourself. Tromsø needs TIFF and we’re happy that you are the one who is now at the wheel. We’re sure that you’ll run the adventure that is TIFF in outstanding fashion.
