Activism Now

Dette filmprogrammet er en hyllest til aktivistene som kjemper – noen ganger med livet som innsats – for å gjøre verden mer rettferdig, bærekraftig og human. Både grasrotbevegelser og enkeltpersoner kan sette i gang demonstrasjoner og kampanjer for politisk og sosial endring. Ofte er dette et uttrykk for at man har lite makt, samtidig som man ønsker å påvirke makthavere. Derfor kan disse prosjektene virke dømt til å mislykkes. Men besluttsomhet og mot, samt tro på en sak, kan noen ganger føre til større endring enn et stort politisk maskineri og byråkrati klarer å skape. Bare se på eksempler som Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela, Malala eller Greta Thunberg.

Dette programmet er vår måte å takke alle mennesker som har kjempet frem mange av de rettighetene vi nyter godt av i dag. This film program is a tribute to activists, to small and big grassroot movements, to all the people who fight – sometimes at the price of their own life – to make the world more just, more sustainable, more humane.

Activism is the act of campaigning to bring about political or social change and is most likely to be carried out by people with little power. For that reason, grassroots movements can seem doomed to fail. But determination, courage, and belief in a cause can sometimes bring about more change than big political machinery and bureaucracy. Just look for example at Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela, Malala, or Greta Thunberg.

This selection of films is our way to thank all of the people who cared enough to start a fight for the rights we enjoy today. We hope their struggles can encourage you to campaign to promote social justice, human rights and environmental protection in your own community. Be the change you want to see in the world!

120 beats per minute er en film som går rett inn i hjertet fordi den byr på ekte engasjement , dramatisk intensitet og fengslende karakterer. Historien er basert på sanne hendelser fra 90-tallet. AIDS-epidemien herjet, og myndighetene klarte ikke å løse problemet. Filmen følger fire unge menn og kvinner i deres kamp og aktivisme mot AIDS, men også i deres kjærlighetsliv og personlige bekjempelse av sykdommen.

Det som gjør 120 beats per minute enda mer spesiell er at regissør Robin Campillo selv var involvert i Act-up, den aktivistorganisasjonen filmen handler om. Store deler av manuset er basert på egne minner, en autentisitet som er dyptgående gjennom hele filmen. Dette er en vakker og opplysende historie, samt en hyllest til 90-tallets aktivister som kjempet for å redde liv.

120 beats per minute is one of these films that captures your heart with its mix of joyful exuberance, dramatic intensity, and engaging characters. Based on true events and characters, the film is set in the early 1990s when the AIDS epidemic is raging, and authorities have repeatedly failed to address the problem. The film follows four young men and women in their activist fight against AIDS, but also in their love lives and personal struggles with the disease.

What makes 120 beats per minute even more special is that director Robin Campillo was himself very involved in Act-up, the activist organization that is featured in the film, and has in large parts based the screenplay on his own memories. This authenticity can be felt deeply throughout the film: more than just beautifully made and enlightening, 120 beats per minute is also a tribute to real-life activists who fought to save lives.

Det finnes aktivister som går ut i gatene og demonsterer (med rette) og protesterer mot autoriteter og myndigheter, mens andre aktivister tar daglig valg som gjør dem til hverdagshelter. Det siste er tilfelle for Barbara, som er et tidligere medlem av Black Panthers, Mamie, en munter kokk, og pastor Renee - tre karismatiske kvinner som driver suppekjøkkenet til Church of the Advocate i et fattig distrikt i Nord-Philadelphia.

Kvinnene deler hver dag ut et måltid til flere hundre mennesker. There are activists who go out in the streets with banners and (rightfully) fight the authorities in protests, and there are activists whose daily choices make them unsung heroes. The latter is the case of Barbara, an ex-member of the Black Panthers, Mamie, a cheerful cook, and pastor Renee: three charismatic women running the soup kitchen of the Church of the Advocate, an impoverished district of North Philadelphia.

Through the benevolent lens of his camera, Petr Lom (whom TIFF aficionados will remember for his burma storybook) sheds light on the caring warmth the three women daily provide to the 100-something people who come to get a free meal. This documentary also highlights the plight of a Mexican mother and her four children who move in the Church-turnedsanctuary after their asylum plea is rejected. This is a film about compassion, courage, and faith that will make you both laugh and cry.

the battle of chile is a monumental documentary shot in real-time that has become one of the references of cinéma vérité (“truthful cinema”). In three parts and 263 minutes, it recounts the pivotal years when Chile toggled from a socialist and democratic country to a military dictatorship, between 1973 and 1976. It starts with the political tensions of 1973 when the Marxist, democratically-elected president Salvador Allende is under threat from a right-wing counter-revolution.

the battle of chile follows the ensuing political violence, the demonstrations and strikes, and the coup d’état led by the military with the support of the CIA, which put in power general and dictator Augusto Pinochet. Filmed by a young crew, this film is a major testimony to Chile’s political history.

This film has been selected by filmmaker Christine Cynn (co-director of the act of killing) for this year’s program section Activism Now!

“Det palestinske folk blir levende begravet”, oppsummerer en mann i Abby Martins nye sterke dokumentar. Filmens fokus er The Great March of Return, en fredelig demonstrasjon som ble startet opp i mars 2018 av folket i Gaza. Like etterpå begynte det israelske militæret å skyte på demonstrantene, både kvinner, barn, journalister og ambulansearbeidere. “The Palestinian people are buried alive”, summarizes one man in Abby Martin’s powerful new documentary. It focuses on The Great March of Return, a peaceful demonstration started by the people of Gaza in March 2018 and still continuing to this day. Soon after the beginning of this non-violent initiative, the Israeli military started shooting and gassing protesters, including women, children, journalists, and paramedics. “We want more than sympathy. We want our rights,” says the grief-stricken mother of a young female health worker who was shot by an Israeli sniper as she tried to rescue injured protesters with her paramedic team. And for justice to be made, the international community needs to know the truth about the war crimes Israel is committing in Gaza. This film contains some images of brutal and graphic violence but is a must-see documentary.

This film has been selected by Mads Gilbert, the head of the emergency medicine department at the UNN and an active solidarity worker in Palestine since the 1970s.

the gleaners and i is a unique documentary that remains highly relevant in a time where food waste is becoming a global problem. Filming with a hand-held camera as she travels through France, director Agnès Varda meets a series of people who “glean” (or collect leftover food) everywhere from the farms in the countryside to the dumpsters in cities. She interviews young people, locals at the bar, farmers, unemployed people and many others who scout for leftovers: sometimes out of necessity, but also based on traditional practices and to avoid wasting.

With her humanistic approach to film, Agnès Varda puts herself on the same level as the people she meets, allowing her to get deep insights into the social inequalities of the French society. Intimate, cheerful and engaging, this epic one-woman journey in the world of gleaning is a masterpiece in creative documentary-making.

made in bangladesh er en film om klesindustrien i Bangladesh like mye som et sterkt karakterportrett. Filmens heltinne er Shimu, en 23 år gammel fabrikkarbeider som starter opp en fagforening med vennene sine for å kjempe for bedre arbeidsforhold. Hun kommer ansikt til ansikt med mange utfordringer, fra ektemannens misbilligelse til fabrikksjefens trusler og et korrupt byråkrati. Men, Shimus styrke og besluttsomhet skinner gjennom og fører henne videre i kampen.

made in bangladesh is a film about the clothing industry in Bangladesh as much as it is a strong character portrait. Its heroine is Shimu, a 23-year-old factory worker who decides to start a workers’ union with her friends to fight for better working conditions. Faced with many difficulties, from her husband’s disapproval to the factory manager’s threats and corrupt bureaucracy, Shimu’s strength and determination shine through and carry her forward.

Shot in Dhaka, Bangladesh, by a female director, this film is remarkable for its authenticity and focus on women’s experiences in a patriarchal society: “Workers’ rights are human rights, women’s rights are human rights” chants a crowd of women factory workers at a meeting. The film makes us see the true costs of your cheap T-shirt. made in bangladeshH is an uplifting film about the struggle for dignity, equality, and empowerment.

Realitetene rundt klimaendringene har hengt truende over oss i flere tiår, men det er først nylig at majoriteten innen både forskning og allmenhet for alvor er blitt bekymret for effektene den har på jorda. Siden 2018, inspirert i stor grad av den karismatiske Greta Thunberg, har ungdom tatt til gatene for å kreve sin rett til en bærekraftig fremtid med skolestreikene, døpt “Fridays for the Future”.

Fordi klimaendringene angår oss alle, inviterer TIFF deg til en spesiell begivenhet der du kan møte lokale økoaktivister, se filmer relatert til miljøet og man kan diskutere potensielle løsninger sammen.

Vi ønsker også ditt bidrag! Du kan derfor foreslå kortfilmer (mindre enn 20 minutter, tilgjengelig gratis på nettet) gjennom våre sosiale medier. Noen av forslagene vil deretter bli plukket ut av TIFF-teamet vårt og vist frem under arrangementet. The reality of climate change has been looming over us for decades, yet it is only recently that the majority of the public has become concerned about its very real effects on our planet. Starting from 2018 and inspired in large part by the charismatic Greta Thunberg, the youth have taken to the streets to claim their rights for a healthy future.

Because climate change concerns all of us, TIFF invites you to a Special Event to meet local eco-activists, watch films related to the environment, and discuss potential solutions together.
