REINDRØMMEN

REINDEER ISLAND

NORWAY 2019 DIRECTOR: Fridtjof Kjæreng RUNNING TIME: 58m PRODUCER: Benedikte Bredesen SOURCE: f(x) produksjoner AS DIALOGUE: Norwegian, Sami SUBTITLES: English

– For me it hasn’t been a choice. It’s been the only thing I ever wanted.

So says Reiulf, the main character of this documentary, who’s dream have always been to have his own herd of reindeer. But as a dáčča, a Norwegian he is banned from this traditional profession. By chance his wife, who is sami, is given the opportunity to assume ownership of a siida-unit (a reindeer unit) on Kvaløya island, outside Tromsø. They accept it, and Reiulf finally has a chance to fulfill his dream and become a reindeer herder. On Kvaløya there is also another unit of reindeer with a different owner, who feels the island is not big enough to support two units. He takes Reiulf and his family to court to stop them from herding, and their future seems more uncertain than ever.

REINDRØMMEN is a fascinating and honest depiction of a rough and demanding profession, but also shows the endless beauty of herding reindeer and working in nature.

WE UP: INDIGENOUS HIP-HOP OF THE CIRCUMPOLAR NORTH

USA 2018 DIRECTORS: Priscilla Naungagiaq Hensley & David Holthouse PRODUCER: Anchorage Museum RUNNING TIME: 59m

Forty years after hip-hop was born in the South Bronx, it’s being re-imagined in fresh ways by young Indigenous artists of the North – from Athabascan villages in Alaska, to the capital city of Greenland, to reindeer-herding towns of northern Finland and to the cities beneath the arctic starlit sky in Norway.

we up surveys the rising stars of the northern indigenous hip-hop scene across the circumpolar north, including dancers as well as rappers. It finds and explores the common themes in their work that transcend vast distances and language barriers, themes such as language revitalization, combating the negative legacies of colonization, and expressing cultural pride.

The result includes a collaboration of indigenous hip-hop artists from six Arctic nations, that ends with a spectacular and moving show at the Riddu Riddu festival in Troms in the summer of 2018.

RUSSIA 2018 DIRECTOR: Roman Zhigalov CAST: Oleg Shibayev, Natalya Rychkova, Oleg Feoktistov, Maria Avramkova RUNNING TIME: 1h 37m PRODUCER: Roman Zhigalov DIALOGUE: Russian SUBTITLES: English

In a small community, in the northern part of rural Russia, an ensemble of characters is about to have their worlds turned upside down.

Danila is a sixteen-year-old boy, living with his Mom and Dad on the edge of a small town surrounded by an endless forest. His life primarily revolves around his home and the road he walks every day to get to school. But between his house and school lives Katya, a woman twice his age. Danila spends hours watching her from an old shed on the edge of the forest. He would never dare to think about being with her. Until one day he sees his father, who is facing an avalanche of problems of his own, show up at Katya’s doorstep.

the forest is a different coming of age tale, set against the vast and remote backdrop of the Russian countryside. It’s a story about family, violence, desire and the loss of innocence.

THE RAVEN AND THE SEAGULL

LYKKELÆNDER

DENMARK, GREENLAND 2018 DIRECTOR: Lasse Lau CINEMATOGRAPHY: Chris Dapkins CAST: Vivi Nielsen, Nukâka Coster-Waldau, Aannguaq Hansen, Angunnguaq Larsen RUNNING TIME: 1h 10m PRODUCER: Rikke Tambo Andersen CREATIVE PRODUCER: Rie Hougaard Landgreen DIALOGUE: Greenlandic, Danish SUBTITLES: English

The relationship between Greenland and Denmark is full of fantasy and myths. The colonial history is entrenched in both Greenland’s infinitely beautiful landscapes and in the collective consciousness. But so is the willingness to break with it and look ahead with a new political self-awareness.

the raven and the seagull is the result of a long-term research project, but talks about its extremely complex topics in a way that grounds the postcolonial perspective in a recognizable life experience. It does so with both a sense of humor and with emphasis.

Lasse Lau (b. 1974) is a filmmaker from Sønderborg, Denmark. His works look at the spatial dimension of power to understand society’s social struggles. He addresses pitfalls in capitalist monolithic readings of space. He’s made several short documentaries, and THE RAVEN AND THE SEAGULL is his first feature length film.
