Saving Versus Investing Both saving and investing have a place in your finances. However, don't confuse the two. Investing is the process of deciding what you do with those savings. Zozos Sandwich House Zozo’s Sandwich House, open since March in the former Azar’s building at 2501 N. Monroe, is the brain child of Jennifer and Aaron Hesseltine, who named the new eatery after their pit bull Zoey. Jennifer, who was laid off from a corporate restaurant job during the pandemic, says the 40-something-year-old couple decided to launch the new restaurant originally for lunch and dinner but changed up the times after the first eight weeks.

“People were coming in for lunch but not for dinner,” Jennifer Hesseltine says. “So we changed the hours to provide breakfast and lunch.” These days Zozo’s is open Monday — Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

While very large sandwiches, both hot and cold, are a mainstay of the lunch menu, smash burgers, hand-breaded cutlets (chicken and pork) and most menu items, including soup, are all made from scratch. One of the most popular sandwiches is the CrayZo Cuban made from ham, roast pork, pork cutlet, pickles, swiss cheese, garlic aioli, and mustard.

Breakfast offerings include the ‘Hot Mess” made with two smash patties, shaved ham, American cheese, runny yolk, Booery’s hot sauce, shreddy lettuce, and mayo. Zozo’s also offers healthy salad options, and homemade sides like a pickle pasta salad and a potato salad.

Lauded local artist Gwyn Pevonka has been a professional artist since 2011, and she saw the need for a different kind of market experience that was family-friendly with a beautifully curated collection of artists from a variety of backgrounds from established to emerging. After moving to Spokane from Nashville, Tennessee (named the “Maker City” by Etsy in 2016), she discovered an absence of connection within the artistic community and consistent opportunities for artists to show their work and make a living in the Northwest that she wanted to help foster. Strategy and Innovation in 2017. Skil’Skin’s primary role is to place

individuals with disabilities in jobs in the community that utilize their skills effectively through its comprehensive Employment Services

department. Through these collaborative services, Skil’Skin is able

to help individuals with disabilities find meaningful employment and effectively manage their financial resources, promoting integration and, ultimately, enhancing their quality of life in the process.

Over that time, Partners Inland Northwest has become the largest food pantry in the county. Partners Inland Northwest strives to prevent hunger and poverty alongside community partners working in tandem. Founded in 1951 as a grassroots nonprofit, Partners Inland Northwest has grown exponentially, and Cal has spearheaded innovative initiatives like a mobile food bank and a weekend meal backpack program for K-12 students. They serve approximately 9,000 people monthly, operating the largest free clothing bank, distributing 2,000 pounds of clothing each week, and being the sole regional diaper bank, providing 70,000 diapers monthly across 11 counties. In 2023 alone, Partners served 56,726 households and 143,235 individuals, including 11,550 babies through the diaper bank. Cal states, “As you can see, we mitigate a great deal of need in the community, but our primary mission is to ensure that families, children, the elderly, and at-risk individuals never go hungry.”

been working tirelessly to grow SDSN into an organization that can serve even more children and families. They have completed over a dozen

meticulously detailed, kid-centric rooms that have changed the lives of the kids who have been lucky enough to have had this team (and the

dozens of friends that Corey enlists to help) come to their homes. Their goal is to make this into a full-time role, and to be able to give back all day, every day to kids and families in the Northwest. That would mean giving a full makeover to two rooms a month, and their creativity and

This town, with a population of 116, may be small but its location serves as a jumping off point to awe-inspiring hikes, camping, river rafting, biking, and relaxing in the mountain air.

In addition to all the amazing outdoor activities in Stanley, there are also places to shop, a rowdy nightlife, and a selection of homemade, gourmet eats. There’s little chance of happening upon Stanley—its location demands that you drive out of your way to visit—but if you find yourself in southeast Idaho, it’s only a one-hour drive from Sun Valley or a 2.5-hour drive from Boise.

They have two Seattle locations, but for this date, you’ll go to the one in Ballard.

Meet there for dessert to start your date on a sweet note. Hot Cakes is open from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m, Monday to Friday, and 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (make sure to follow their social media accounts for any closures or updates in hours).

If you decide to stick with their specialty molten cakes, I recommend their classic, gluten-free(!) Dark Decadence or Peanut Butter.

I took my first ever Pilates class via a Mari Windsor DVD in my parents’ family room in 2004. After years of cross-country running and paying very little attention to stretching, strengthening, or structure, my body welcomed the gentle, methodical moves.

Almost 20 years later, I found myself in a health crisis and in desperate need of rest and restoration to heal my gut, balance my hormones, and replenish my adrenals. My religious devotion to daily runs and HIIT classes had to be replaced with walks and gentle movement. My health coach suggested Pilates, so I dove back into that world and have learned so much about my body, the diversity of the Pilates method, and the power of low-impact movement.

What I thought of as merely a light workout, useful for the core, stretching, and little else, has changed how I relate to myself, my body, and movement generally. I now know that alignment, flexibility, and the mind/body connection matter as much as, or perhaps more than, sweating and feeling exhausted after a workout.

I am starting to sound like a broken record at this point, but I never cease to be impressed by and grateful for the vast resources in our little corner of the Northwest. We have some top-notch pilates studios in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene. In addition, we have incredible mindfulness resources in the Inland Northwest, including healing centers, yoga, and more.

When it comes to Pilates, I visited the best in the area, picked the brains of the talented individuals who create and hold space for our bodies to heal, progress, and connect. Gather Yoga Studio is Sun Valley’s go-to yoga spot, with classes starting at 6:30 a.m. and going until 7 p.m. There’s also a boutique attached with yoga clothes, accessories, and more. The local YMCA offers many yoga classes in addition to other workout classes and a full gym, swimming pool, indoor basketball court, and rock-climbing wall.

Zenergy is an all-around wellness spot in Sun Valley, with a full gym, plenty of yoga and other classes, outdoor and indoor pool, locker rooms with salt saunas and steam rooms, hot tub, and a full onsite spa with massage, nail, hair, facial and skin care, and acupuncture services. Zenergy is a private gym, so you’ll need someone’s guest pass to utilize the other facilities, but the spa is open to all.

I don’t think anyone can deny that quality has decreased over the years since the online fast-fashion boom. Cheaper materials and low wages for workers are the top culprits of why fast fashion quality has gone so far downhill. Cheap prices entice us to buy and then buy more and more and more and more.

It might be cheaper, but what about the longevity of that item? It doesn’t last because fast fashion doesn’t want it to last. I’ve had clothing that was over 100 years old that withstood the test of time because it was so well made; vintage fabrics are thick and luscious, buttons, snaps and zippers are high quality. You can feel the craftsmanship in a lot of vintage clothing just by touching it.

That is not to say that every vintage piece of clothing is high quality, but many curators of vintage clothing in town do work hard to bring you good top-quality pieces.

But isn’t vintage clothing outdated? Not even close! Many people are slowly starting to realize that we are constantly being manipulated by fast fashion giants to buy all these new “trendy” pieces of clothing, but it’s just to make us want to buy more. I personally am over buying from big box stores online and funding CEOs to go to the moon.

According to Forbes, when you spend $100 at a small business, $68 stays in the community. Spend the same $100 at a big-box store or national retailer; only $43 stays. Why? Because local businesses rely on other local businesses. Local businesses create local jobs, you’re directly supporting your community both socially and economically. You’re helping the environment by conserving energy and resources by using less fuel in transportation and less packaging. Once I became more aware, I realized that I was in control of where I wanted my money going.

Many have argued that vintage and thrift stores are the same. Thrift stores are generally businesses that receive free donations, sell higher priced items online and the rest you dig through and hunt for in their store. Vintage shops have already done the digging, bought their items, and processed and curated these said items for their customers.

Both are a great way to support your local community and the environment at the same time, but I do urge you to do research on who in your area is a local business vs. CEO-run, plus if they are for-profit or non-profit organizations. Keep in mind that many big thrift stores get huge tax breaks that small businesses do not.

Some places I recommend stopping by, places where I source my favorite vintage and thrift items, include: Boulevard Mercantile, Teleport, Do it With Soul, Midtown Market, Collective Threads, Veda Lux, Global Neighborhood Thrift. Your list may look a little different, but the important thing is to get out there and support your local community.

The Rise Of Sober-Curiosity According to The Insider, the growing trend of “sober curiosity” kicked off in 2018 as a response to the ever-increasing research on the harmful effects of alcohol. Since then, social media has been teeming with ads for alcohol alternatives ranging from wild mushroom elixirs to non-alcoholic distilled botanicals.

“Overall - non-alcoholic is not going away,” says Nathan Reilly, co-owner of Three Magnets Brewing. “An entire generation of youth have a different outlook on alcohol consumption than previous generations [...] so the non-alcoholic craft beverage trend has a lot of staying power.”

Three Magnets Brewing is located in the downtown of Washington state’s capitol, Olympia, which was hit hard by the telecommuting of state workers. “We knew that we’d need to think way outside the box in order to have a lifeline in whatever the postpandemic downtown economy might look like,” Reilly told me. So, they launched their first NA hazy IPA just in time for Sober October 2020.

The reception was overwhelmingly positive, so they brewed two more NA beers for Dry January, part of the Self Care nonalcoholic line of beers. They began selling directly to consumers in 41 states and invested all of their Economic Injury Disaster Loan money into refining their non-alcoholic brewing process and defining their brand. Since then, their audience has grown exponentially.

A Moving Target If you’re not already on the NA beer trend, it can be hard to understand the appeal, yet the audience is only expanding. According to CNBC, the global non-alcoholic beer market is projected to increase from $22 billion in 2022 to upwards of $40 billion by 2032. So, if you’re not drinking NA beer (yet), then who is?

I asked Matt Lincecum, co-owner of Seattle’s Fremont Brewing, if anything surprised him about the target demographic for their NA beer line. “I’m continually amazed [at] how broad and diverse the fan base is for NA beers. Whether it’s the first beer, the last beer, the beer with a quick lunch in the middle of the day, NA beers appeal to everyone who wants a beer but doesn’t want to be slowed down.”

The growing popularity for NA beer has even led to Three Magnets introducing their NA beer on draft. “Watching them order their Self Care–there is a genuine look of appreciation on their face,” says Reilly, “It’s so incredibly rewarding to know that we are creating that experience for them.”

The Future of PNW NA Craft Brews All trends come and go, and beer is no exception. From the thickened fruit juice smoothie IPAs to the light and crisp “dad beers” and hard seltzers, it could be easy to relegate NA beer as just another drink fad. But something feels different about this brew.

With the growing demand for transparency and a leaning towards healthier lifestyles, it seems entirely likely that NA beer will remain a market staple.

Younger people, individuals on fitness journeys, the sober-forevers, and the sober-curious are eagerly bellying up to the bar and finding a beer that tastes great and offers the same social freedom as the hard stuff.

“We’ve built a foundation strong enough to be able to handle the weight of some very lofty goals,” said Reilly on the future of the Self Care line, “We already have major publications like the Chicago Tribune, PUNCH Drink, and The Oregonian calling us out as one of the best non-alcoholic beer producers in the country.” Now, the goal is to find strategic partners with the brewing capacity to launch the brand in retail across the PNW. “The non-alcoholic beer segment of the adult beverage category in the United States is about to get super noisy,” says Reilly, “[but] absolutely nobody in the Pacific Northwest is doing anything on the scale of what we are doing, with a 100% dedicated non-alcoholic craft beer brand with rotational one-offs. So we feel very good about the longevity of Self Care if we can hit major retail before there is too much noise in the market.”

A cozy, downtown coffee shop that also serves mocktails into the evening? Yes, you can find that right here in Spokane at none other than The Wet Whistle. This spot is particularly unique, as most of their drinks feature Wilderton, a non-alcoholic botanical spirit crafted in the Pacific Northwest.

We tried the Derby Day (Wilderton Earthen, ginger beer, fresh mint or lime) and the Citrus Paradise (Wilderton Lustre, grapefruit, lime, simple); both were so full of flavor!

While Wilderton’s Lustre has orange, tarragon, and lavender notes, their Earthen awakens your taste with white peppercorn, pinesmoked tea, and cardamom.

Ruins makes drink navigation easy (and fun) by designating sections on its menu for Low Proof and Zero Proof. After discussing my preferences with the bartender, I ordered the Nom de Plume as I was in the mood for a not-overly-sweet drink.

Into my mocktail went The Pathfinder Hemp & Root (another nonalcoholic spirit), plum shrub*, lemon juice, ginger, and mint. *A shrub is essentially a concentrated syrup meant to be used in beverages, also known as “drinking vinegar.”

Ruins makes all of their shrubs in-house, and you can really taste the time and attention that goes into the drinks. They’re keen on rotating their menus to incorporate seasonal flavors, mocktails included.

On display at several local farmers’ markets and used for drinks by

Located in Greenacres, The Boneyard has a separate mocktail menu that highlights the unique flavors in their many varieties of syrups. Any of the mocktails can also be made into cocktails – simply add your spirit of choice.

Each drink we tried was beautifully made, and by just looking at them, you can’t spot the mocktail.

After trying several on the menu, my favorite is still the Elderflower Spritz made with grapefruit, house elderflower syrup, lime, rosemary, and soda water.

We are in my favorite time of year in the Pacific Northwest / Inland Northwest, when cooler temperatures mean all things cozy are happening! I don’t usually want to brave the cold to go to brunch; my little family wants to stay in more often on those chilly mornings, and have something that fills our souls, and makes our little hearts happy, not just our tummies.

In preparation for the recipes below, I have a serious question for you: are you team sweet or team savory? Lucky for you, I have two family favorite brunches that are perfect for making ahead, aren’t too complicated, and are absolutely delicious.

One is a savory option, and one is a sweet, so you don’t have to choose!

I love to bake these the evening before so I can wake up, heat them up, and really maximize the laziness. These little beauts are so wonderful to wake up to, and are absolutely AMAZING when served with warm comfy socks, your coziest jammies, and a really good cup of coffee.

Ingredients: For the dough: ¾ cup warm milk-heated to no more than 110°F

Savory Strata with Carmelized Onion, Mushroom, and Gruyère This strata is a play on my momma’s Christmas Strata she would make for us every Christmas morning. Not only is it extremely versatile as far as your choice of ingredients go, it is so simple, and so incredibly delicious.

Instructions: Ingredients 1.5 cups of Caramelized Onions (see tips below) 1 pint of Cremini or shrooms of choice. Clean, slice, and sauté for the last few minutes with the onions.

1 loaf of bread of choice, sliced sandwich style (I use Costco Country Loaves available in the bakery) ½ pound of bacon, cooked and crumbled 2 cups grated Gruyère

1: Butter a casserole dish well. I used a smaller round one, but you can use any size baking dish and adjust the amount of ingredients you need accordingly.

2: Mix eggs, cream, salt and pepper, and thyme in a large bowl. Whisk really well to combine and set aside.

3: Begin with a layer of bread in the bottom of the buttered baking dish, then a layer of the onion and mushroom mixture, then bacon, then Gruyère. Repeat until the baking dish has about a 1” headspace, ending with a cheese layer.

4: Carefully pour the egg mixture over the top of the layers, making sure to cover evenly. Cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 4-5 hours, although I prefer to chill it overnight and bake it off in the morning.

You really want to make sure to give it time to allow the bread to soak up the custard mixture.

5: Once you are ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350°. Bake for 30-40

Here are a few tips to help you nail them! *Thinly slice the onions to help reduce cooking time. *Use a good quality ghee, olive or avocado oil, as using butter may result in some burning. Butter has a lower smoke point in its unrefined state. *It takes time to develop the natural sugars in onions, so make sure to pay attention to them as they cook so as to not burn them. *Stir often!
