Publisher’s Letter : Hope. It’s often counterintuitive, but in an era of uncertainty, it can be a lifeline. The last decade has been one of such unique paradigm shifts and public fascination, and in an era of instant news and constant connectivity, it can feel more overwhelming than ever. There is hope beyond the news cycle, though, in the everyday quiet that we can choose to seek out. My neighbor and his sweet wife walk the same path every single day. His age doesn’t phase him, and he walks at his own pace. Every time he spots me outside, he gets excited and shuffles faster to tell me a joke he’s kept in rotation for just the occasion. I always laugh, even if I’ve heard it before. Seeing him is one of the brightest spots of my day. It’s a consistent joy. A small spark that keeps me going even on days I don’t want to see anyone at all. We carefully curate the pages of this publication to be a consistent sweet spot for all of you. I lay awake at night with thoughts racing, wanting to make sure that each and every story serves a greater purpose - giving you a little lift and helping you to see the magic in your everyday moments, too. This issue is filled to the brim with so many special people, products and places that we know you’ll love as much as we do, and we hope that it gives you a much needed spark on days you feel like racing inward. Let it inspire you to seek out community and reconnect with (or discover) your people. In a season with a famous chill, our heartfelt wish is that you find warmth where you need it most. All our love,
Erin

3. Make Your Sleep Environment Comfortable
Your mind and body will thank you for it.
Ensure your bedroom is conducive to sleep. This means a comfortable mattress and pillows, a cool room temperature, and minimal noise and light. Invest in blackout curtains if needed.
4. Limit Screen Time The blue light emitted by phones, tablets, and computers can interfere with your ability to fall asleep. Try to avoid screens for at least an hour before bedtime. There are also glasses that can help with some of the effects of blue light.
5. Be Mindful of Diet and Exercise A balanced diet and regular physical activity can promote better sleep. Avoid heavy meals, caffeine, and alcohol close to bedtime, as they can disrupt your sleep.
6. Manage Stress Stress and sleep have a reciprocal relationship, but it’s possible to break the cycle. Consider stress management techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, or yoga to help you relax before bedtime.
7. Seek Professional Help If you continue to struggle with sleep or mental health issues, it’s essential to consult a healthcare professional.

A Stay at Alyeska Resort in Girdwood
BY

e all know that Alaska is brimming with stunning natural beauty from incredible mountains, to
towering glaciers, to lush forests all year round, but it really stuns in the winter. I’ve found that one of the best ways to experience all of its icy natural wonder is with a stay at the luxurious, scenic Alyeska Resort in Girdwood.
Getting There It’s about a 45-minute drive from Anchorage to the town of Girdwood along the Seward Highway. With the Chugach Mountains to one side and the Turnagain Arm to the other, the scenery on the way to the resort is incredible, and you might see Dall sheep along the highway (especially early in the morning).
Alyeska Resort gets an average of 643 inches of fresh snow each winter; that’s a whopping 53.5 feet, which is at least 15 more feet than ski resorts in the Lower 48. And unlike the Lower 48 where you often have to take it easy when you first arrive because of the high altitude, at Alyeska, you can start hard charging right away since the summit isn’t over 4,000 feet.
Ski Slopes for Every Skill Level The resort has the world’s longest double black diamond run amidst over 1,600 skiable acres. There are more than 75 named runs accessible by seven lifts. While the more difficult runs may make the most news, there’s something for every level of skier and snowboarder, and the season can run all the way through April. What a way to beat cabin fever!

embracing the call of winter in the inland northwest
s winter descends upon the Inland Northwest, some see the shorter days and infamous “permacast” gray skies as a signal
to hibernate. But for others, the first frost whispers of adventure that makes them truly come alive—the white-capped mountains are calling, and they must go.
Go… what exactly? Skiing, of course!
As someone who grew up skiing in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah— the state known for “The Greatest Snow on Earth”—I was blown away by the quality of skiing here in the Inland Northwest. Now, as a ski instructor at 49 Degrees North (voted “Best Place to Ski” in The Inlander’s Best Of poll the past two years in a row), I love sharing my passion with newcomers and introducing them to an activity I hope they’ll enjoy for years to come.

Adventure for All Ages Skiing knows no age limits, as many in the Inland Northwest can attest. Take it from Devoe, who first clicked into his skis when he was nearly 50 years old. “At first it was quite a challenge for me,” he recalls. “Now I’m on skis 100+ days a year, easy. I just fell in love with it.” And for some, age only adds to the joy—Ali Pasino, Snowsports Director at 49 Degrees North, has seen skiers well into their eighties and nineties who “can barely walk in the parking lot, but once they get on skis, you can’t tell their age because they’ve been doing it for so long it’s just effortless.”
Pasino, who herself learned to ski at 21, emphasizes that skiing is “a challenge by choice” activity. “You can be aggressive and go steep and deep and fast,” she explains, “or you can take your time and choose your terrain and be controlled. You pick the level of challenge you want for that day, or for that season.”
The Power Of A Lesson Both Devoe and Pasino stress the importance of proper instruction for newcomers. “A lot of people come up here and don’t think they need a lesson,” Devoe explains, “but the person who gets the lesson will get more value out of skiing, become proficient much faster, and face less risk of injury.” Lessons not only boost confidence but also build a strong foundation for safety, skill progression, and long-term enjoyment—making them one of the best investments for any new skier or snowboarder.
Instructors tailor lessons to all skill levels, from first-timers to families seeking an unforgettable day on the slopes. For me, watching beginners evolve from tentative turns on the bunny hill to confidently exploring the mountain is a joy that never gets old. It’s a transformation that feels almost miraculous—and one of the most rewarding parts of teaching.

Seattle has long been a dance hub, so should you be an Emerald City resident looking for a new way to be active or a visitor who wants to try a fun class out, you’re in luck. Setting Short Long-Term Goals as a Couple BY
Canopy Credit Union
In marriage, it is crucial to work together to prioritize financial wellness. Setting short and long-term goals together will help you and your partner stay focused on where you want to go financially. But before you can begin to set goals, you need to prioritize healthy communication.
38
Starting the conversation Taking the time to understand your partner’s experiences with money will help you better understand their thought process and priorities. As you are on a journey to get to know each other better, having framework building conversations will only bring you closer together.

?
Sit down with your partner and talk through these questions: What did you learn about money growing up? What is your first memory of spending money? What about saving money? How did your family, your neighbors, and people you respected in the community deal with money? How did those examples influence how you feel today? When you try to approach a money discussion, how does it make you feel? What is a financial area that you want to grow in?
Getting used to having conversations about finances will help you and your partner be ready for conversations about bigger or more complex decisions. Once you focus on communication as a key tool to help you make financial goals, you and your partner can jump into the real fun - goal setting!
Take time to think! Brainstorm together about what you value in your relationship and the life you built together. Talking through how those values correlate to your finances is a great starting point when setting financial goals. Ask each other, “When you think about what our marriage and life values, what comes to mind? Family? Security? Community? Adventure?” Set aside time for a brainstorming conversation that is separate from a planning conversation to help you and your partner think creatively and really dream.
Focus your goals After brainstorming, sit down and get specific on your goals. Instead of having the goal to “save money”, narrow in on what exactly you want to save and for what. By being more detailed in what you want your ultimate outcome to be, the more likely you both will be able to continually grasp your goals. And, having clear goals will prevent you from straying away from the plan when times get tough.

Together, answer these three questions to help define your goals:
?
What is an important purchase/financial decision that I need to make? How much will it cost? How soon do I need the money? Your answers to these questions will give more direction to where your funds should be funneled. For example, your goal could be to buy a new car. First, you need to find out how much it will cost. Next, you need to find out how much money you need for a down payment and information on a loan and monthly payments. Having all those details will allow you to better focus on the overall goal of buying a new car.
Prioritize your plan Now that you have focused goals, it is time to work together to prioritize. It is in this stage of goal setting that you and your partner will really want to lean on communication to make sure both people feel understood and heard.
First, identify which of your priorities fit into short-term or long-term financial goals.
Short-term goals are for financial priorities that have a shorter timeline, usually around six months to five years. Examples include creating an emergency savings,
It is in this stage of goal setting that you and your partner will really want to lean on communication to make sure both people feel understood & heard.
buying new furniture, saving for a downpayment on a car, funding a wedding, saving for an epic vacation, paying for a graduate degree, etc.
Long-term financial goals tend to have timelines between five years to 50 years. These goals are ones that you will continually work on your whole marriage, so being clear and adapting when need be is essential. Examples include funding your retirement, saving for your kids’ college, eliminating debt, investing, or building an estate to leave behind.
Now, just because something is a short-term goal doesn’t mean it is a higher priority than a long-term goal, or visa versa. For example, if you are in danger of losing a car, that will take precedence over making sure you are on track for retirement. The most time sensitive ones will likely become your highest priority, so make sure you are continually checking in together on your priorities as things might change over time.

Make your goals SMART Now that you and your partner know which goals you want to focus on first and which ones will take more time, it is time to flesh out each goal more. Using the SMART goals outline can help you make effective short-term and long-term financial goals. By writing down your goals and putting them where you can easily see them, like on your fridge or in your car, you will be consistently reminded about your purpose and drive.
Specific: Clearly state what you hope to accomplish

with your goal. By having focused goals, you will be better equipped to execute your financial goals and get what you want.
Measurable: Create structure in your goals with quantifying pieces so you can easily see your progress.
Attainable: While dreaming big isn’t a bad thing, it is important to be realistic when it comes to finances. Don’t set

your expectations too high. Instead create achievable steps that will bring you sure success.
Relevant: Make sure to have your goals align with the
Relevant Time-bound
bigger picture of your finances. Prioritizing different spending needs to align with the rest of your plan will help you make wiser choices.
Time-bound: Decide on a set time frame to complete this goal. Often, projects that are open-ended without any time constraints take a long time to achieve or aren’t completed at all. Put some “fire” underneath you and give yourself a deadline.
Moving forward together By intentionally taking time to plan out short and long-term money goals, you are setting up your marriage for financial wellness! Together, you can hold each other accountable as you move forward to your goals. If you would like additional support or help getting started on your goals, Canopy Credit Union offers free financial coaching.

or most of my life, I equated therapists with endearingly elitist balding men with three
piece suits and offices lined with giant leatherbound books, solidly detached from reality. I may have developed this impression solely from watching Frasier, but it stuck nonetheless. In my mind, therapy was a sterile, expensive, and embarrassing process.
Thanks to lots of progress by professionals, like the four I interviewed, therapy is no longer anything like a scene from Frasier. Therapists use play, mindfulness, collaboration, and even beauty services to help us all to release trauma, connect with our most authentic selves, and live lives that are fuller than we once thought

Meet Becky Kukucka: From Chronic Pain to Wellness Advocate Those who meet Becky Kukucka now would never guess that, not long ago, she battled chronic pain and daily headaches brought on by years of repetitive motions running ultrasound machines. Today, she is the kind of person around whom it’s almost impossible NOT to smile. She is magnetic without demanding attention, positive without being fake, and she has a laugh that seems to come from deep within her, the kind that can’t be faked and comes only from a person who is deeply fulfilled. It’s hard to imagine that just recently, daily, debilitating pain was her norm.
Becky treated her symptoms as best she could until she tried an assisted stretch at a local barre class. The rest, as they say, is history. She is now passionate about sharing the life-changing power of stretching with the Spokane community.

TOP SPEAKEASIES IN SPOKANE BY

I
n the history of America, one has to include the history of alcohol in that story. When Congress ratified the 18th
Amendment, which made the production, sale, and transportation illegal, Washington had already been under those conditions for five years as a leader in the Temperance pack. Consumers were forced to find establishments that were still willing to provide those services without exposing themselves to the public. Prohibition didn’t really eliminate the existence and consumption of alcohol - it still existed (though in much smaller quantities) after raids that swept the nation in 1919. In fact, it was a more booming business than ever thanks to its newly illicit status. Thus, speakeasies were born. And profitable.
What exactly is a speakeasy? They’re typically found in a location that was disguised or shielded from view of normal business, and allowed consumers to continue to enjoy wine, beer, and spirits. It’s a little hard to find with a vibe that feels both intimate and effortlessly cool. Think places that celebrate good times, great conversations, and even better craft cocktails. It’s all about the vibe: it needs to feel exclusive yet welcoming, where the aesthetic adds to the experience. If it’s underground, that’s just the Luxardo cherry on top.
Here in the PNW, we still have locations that send a subtle nod to these hidden locations to imbibe that are off the beaten path. Sadly, Google and other mapping apps have made these places easily findable, which takes the mystique out of the hunt a little, but the high level of cocktail artistry will more than make up for that.

Place wine, lemon juice, pineapple nectar/juice, cream, and shallots in
a saucepan. The cream is not traditional, but it is used to help stabilize the sauce. Bring to a simmer over medium/high heat. Allow to simmer for around 5 minutes, or until the liquid has reduced by half. Using a fine-mesh strainer or a piece of cheesecloth, strain out the minced shallot, and discard.
7
Reduce heat to the lowest setting and whisk in 2 cubes of butter at
a time, allowing butter to melt into the mixture before adding more, until all butter is added. Keep the butter moving until fully melted. Whisking continuously allows the butter to emulsify into the wine mixture, creating a beautifully buttery sauce. Taste and adjust the seasoning to your preference. The garlicky scallion fried rice does a wonderful job of ensuring none of that beautiful sauce gets left behind.

Together, We Bring Light to Childhood Cancer While September's Childhood Cancer Awareness Month has passed, our commitment to raising awareness and supporting children with cancer continues every day. Every 3 minutes—a parent hears the words, “Your child has cancer,” and that statement changes the lives of these brave children and their families...forever. At the Childhood Cancer Coalition, we are dedicated to ensuring that no family faces this journey alone. Since 1977, we have provided financial aid, resources, and emotional support to these children who are battling cancer and supporting their family's needs during their darkest moments. We serve families from Eastern Washington, North Idaho, and Western Montana. Our firefly logo is a symbol of unity and hope, representing how communities can come together to light the way for those facing the challenges of childhood cancer. Be Part of the Coalition Help us support the children of the Inland Northwest who are courageously fighting cancer. With your help, we can create brighter futures for these children and their families. To donate or learn more, visit www.cccnw.org, or contact: Leslie Woodfill at 509-995-5431 or leslie@cccnw.org
