Bezos might be the biggest name in publishing to come out of the Emerald City, but his operation outgrew the “homegrown bookstore” label decades ago. But all is not lost in Seattle. The more big-town-than-large-city is still home to numerous independent booksellers where you can spend an entire afternoon (or at the very least, a lunch break) wandering and browsing.

Here are the best independent bookstores in Seattle to add to your list!

The Central District is one of the best areas for nightlife in the city. Black folks from far and wide congregate for the sweet release and exchange of energy one can only experience through music and dancing. Here are a few places to connect with Black culture in Seattle.

Red Lounge This bar is known for its Afrobeats, Dancehall and Reggae music. With an Afro-Caribbean-inspired menu, generous seating, and a spacious dance floor, you can easily spend an entire night in pure bliss. For those interested in African Diasporic rhythms, Ghanaian-born DJ Nayiram unites people of all backgrounds during the most electric and eclectic Afrobeats parties Seattle has ever seen. All products and items are created and sold by Black Artists who receive 100% of the proceeds from the sale of their work.

Northwest African American Museum: NAAM, is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1984 by a group of community activists. However, it is not Blackowned or operated. The museum is located in the former Colman School, which was Seattle’s first public school for Black students. The museum’s staff and board of directors are composed of a diverse group of individuals. NAAM is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the history and culture of African Americans in Seattle. They have exhibits featuring legends like Jimi Hendrix, and James Baldwin and different topics, including slavery, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Black Power Movement.

Judkins Park and Playfield This airy locale holds the prestige of being the oldest and largest park in the Central District. The park has been a gathering place for the Black community for generations and is still a popular spot for community events and gatherings today. You’ll often find youth and older athleisure lovers playing football, running, skating, biking, and skateboarding.

The Central District Forum for Ideas and Art The Central District Forum for Ideas and Art: With the mantra, “Blackness is not a monolith,” the center’s focus is to empower Black artists and build community through art. The community center hosts art shows, concerts, and workshops. transcend time and place, connecting us with the artists of the past while inspiring new creations in the present. For Megan Perkins, this sentiment rings especially true. Megan’s artistic journey, which began with childhood paintings and sketches, took a dynamic turn when she studied abroad in the heart of Florence, Italy. This experience exposed her to the rich tapestry of art history, instilling a deep appreciation for the masters of the past.

Yet Megan’s artistic voyage didn’t end in the Renaissance city. Instead, it brought her back to the Inland Northwest, where she has cultivated her own unique artistic identity. From early memories of easel fingerpainting at school to her tireless desire to capture the world around her, Megan’s artistic spirit has remained unwavering.

From her artistic exhibitions to her teaching, Megan is nurturing creativity in others and helping shape our community. Megan exemplifies what it means to live, work, and play in the Northwest, and she’s making our region better through her creativity and instruction.

Her goal is to connect with venues and organizations that share her passion for art education, fostering creativity on a global scale. As part of her ongoing journey, Megan attended Sketcher Fest, the first U.S.-based sketchbook festival. Urban Sketchers, an organization founded in Seattle, hosted this event, bringing together artists to share their sketchbooks, techniques, and camaraderie. Megan aspires to participate in similar events, expanding her horizons in the art world.

Megan Perkins is not just an artist and teacher; she's a creative visionary on a mission to inspire, educate, and connect artists on a local and global scale. Her journey is a testament to the power of art to enrich lives, tell stories, and build vibrant communities. As she continues to create, teach, and dream, Megan’s impact on the art world is bound to grow, leaving a legacy of creativity and connection in her wake.

Fall Into Fascinating Reads Must-Read Novels by Northwest Authors BY

Sharma Shields

One of my autumnal musts is cozying up on a crisp late-October day with a steaming cup of Evening in Missoula tea and a richly layered book. I love the greens, golds, and blues of the Inland Northwest, the way the flowers and leaves here gasp with their last deep breath of vibrancy before the paler winter months arrive. I also love the vibrant array of fiction I’ve read by Northwest authors, books as striking and beautiful as a clear fall day. Here are a few choice novels and story collections that showcase the breathtaking range of talent within our region.

Tell Me I’m an Artist is as hilarious as it is moving.

This novel is a hilarious and harrowing sendup of the power structures in academia and of the harmful centering of white men. Jha performs a tricky and flawless swan dive into the entitled first-person perspective of Oliver Harding, an aging white male professor at a Seattle university who lusts after his colleague, a younger Pakistani law professor named Ruhaba Kahn. Ruhaba’s thoughtful, compassionate nephew Amir is a terrific foil for Oliver’s entitlement and provides insight into global racism, misogyny, and threat. The Laughter is one of my favorite reads of the last year, I drank this book down in just a couple of days.

Cider Delights

A Taste Tour of Spokane’s Top Cider Houses BY

Carlie Lee

Spokane’s craft beverage scene has been thriving lately. While our picturesque city is often associated with its craft breweries and wine-tasting rooms, there is a hidden gem making waves in the local beverage scene: hard cider. Most commonly known as a fermented applebased elixir, hard cider can use various fruits such as pears, peaches, and berries to impart unique flavors. Each variety offers a refreshing experience for those seeking a different kind of libation. Follow along to learn about some of the best cideries in our area!

Inland Cider Mill After the successful launch of Thomas Clare

Bardic Brewing The husband and wife duo behind Bardic Brewing are one of a kind; she makes the cider, and he makes the beer. The tap list is always half cider, thanks to Courtney, and half beer, courtesy of Mark. You’ll find ciders infused with unique ingredients such as butterfly pea flower and holy basil on the lineup. For the fruit lovers, the strawberry and pineapple options are great and rotate often. I love how Bardic proclaims that their drink philosophy is centered around quality; you can definitely taste it.

Wine Cellars, owner Sean and his wife decided to expand their beverage-making to include hard cider. Upon entering Inland Cider Mill, you’re warmly greeted and made to feel like an instant friend. Sean is passionate about his products and happy to answer any questions. He also encourages sampling as many ciders as possible to ensure you end up with a pint you enjoy. Inland Cider also offers flights for the indecisive imbiber (ahem, me). During my visit, my favorite ciders were the Passionfruit Orange Guava (aka POG) and the Grapefruit N’ Hops. If you want to introduce someone to hard cider, this is a stop you’ll want to make.

Liberty Ciderworks Award-winning and for good reason, Liberty Ciderworks makes its hard cider using apples from the Palouse and Yakima Valley regions. Focused on crafting exceptional hard ciders using traditional methods, I appreciate that none of their options are overly sweet. From crisp and tart to complex and tannic, there’s a cider to suit every preference. Liberty Ciderworks’ downtown tasting room is quaint and cozy, ideal for catching up with a friend or even popping in by yourself. The staff at Liberty Ciderworks is knowledgeable and passionate about their craft, providing insights into the cider-making process and helping guests choose the perfect cider. Be sure to check out their website for suggested food pairings, too!

Locust Cider Hailing from Woodinville, WA, Locust Cider now has taproom locations all over the state. Their Spokane taproom is located conveniently downtown and has various events throughout the week, like trivia on Tuesdays and bingo on the weekends. I appreciate that they use real ingredients and never any artificial flavorings or sweeteners. In addition to their core cider lineup, Locust Cider also experiments with small-batch and seasonal releases. This allows them to introduce limited-edition flavors and innovative creations throughout the year. Have you ever had a cider made with dill? Me neither, but with the addition of lemon, it totally works! Prepare to stay a while as there are a variety of flatbreads and other savory snacks to choose from, too.

As you can see, there’s no shortage of options for cider houses here in our area. Moreover, Spokane’s cider scene goes beyond the drink itself, with a vibrant community of cider enthusiasts and connoisseurs passionate about sharing their knowledge and experiences.

1. No-Li Brewhouse 1003 E. Trent Avenue #170, Spokane, WA 99202 First on my list is No-Li Brewhouse, owned by John and Cindy Bryant. I got the opportunity to visit them, take a tour of the brewery, and learn all about the work they invest in their company and our community. Every penny that is made through No-Li is invested right back into the operation of the brewery and into funding a wide variety of community events, charities, and opportunities.

If you’re looking for something fun to do on a Friday night, this brewery has it all. Play some skeeball, watch a game on the big screen, or veg out in front of their many fireplaces. Next time you take a trip to No-Li, be sure to try their Wrecking Ball stout, and their Big and Juicy IPA. You won’t be disappointed

4. Badass Backyard Brewing 1415 N. Argonne Road, Spokane Valley, WA 99212

This was another great visit that truly deserves recognition and community love. Charlene, the owner of Badass Backyard Brewing, started this journey

in 2015 by brewing homemade beer in her backyard, and over the years her brewery has grown into what it is today. She is one of the very few womanowned breweries in all of Washington state, and the only one in Spokane Valley.

Grab a beer, grab some board games, and hang in the back with your friends, or just spend quiet time with your partner. Badass Backyard Brewing offers many great opportunities to the people visiting and other breweries by

partnering for beer collabs and charity events. Go support women in beer,

2. Bellwether Brewing Co. 2019 N. Monroe Street, Spokane, WA 99205

and check this place out next time you’re in Spokane Valley!

For being a little hole-in-the-wall brewery, this place sure does have so much to offer! Bellwether follows an old-world traditional style of brewing and flavors by using natural foraged herbs in their recipes instead of hops, and brewed in barrels instead of tanks.

If you are looking for some downright crazy beer flavors you won’t find anywhere else in Spokane, Bellwether is the place to visit.

3.The Grain Shed Taproom 111 S. Cedar Street, Spokane, WA 99201 The Grain Shed Taproom is a newer brewery that recently opened in late 2022 and is an addition to The Grain Shed bakery, both located in downtown Spokane.

I was a big fan of their Birthday Buzz Pale, both for the name and the taste! The Grain Shed Taproom has a bright and warm feeling to it right when you walk in, and being in this brewery with such kind humans running the place makes for a level of comfort you don’t seem to find at typical establishments these days.

5. Uprise Brewing Co. 617 N. Ash Street, Spokane, WA 99201

5

One word. Smash burger. No, they really do have incredible, insanely good

beers, like their Guava Gose Sour and the Fast Forward IPA. THIS is the perfect place for food and the ultimate parties, social gatherings, or days spent on the patio in the heart of Kendall Yards.

With a wide menu catered to multiple preferences and a mix of sweet and

savory, this menu is unique and different from your usual everyday restaurant menus. There’s not a single thing I haven’t liked on this menu!

While all their beers on tap are great, Uprise is widely popular for their hazy IPAs and lagers. Uprise has plenty of space and things to do, like a gaming

area, patio, and cornhole. It’s also dog-friendly if you’re looking for a patio to

grab a light, crisp, and cool beer after a nice walk with your fur babies on the trails.

Whether you’re coming down to experience an event at The Grain Shed Taproom or just coming by to sip a beer and play some games, this is a great choice located in the heart of Spokane.

7. Daft Badger Brewing Co. 1710 N. 2nd Street, Coeur d’Alene, ID 83814 Daft Badger wouldn’t be on this list if it didn’t have amazing beer, but Daft Badger will do you one even better: BACON CUP. Yep, it’s exactly what you think it is. A cup full of bacon smothered in a homemade huckleberry barbeque sauce. The mixture of savory and sweet is absolutely astounding. Daft Badger has so much more than just this bacon cup, but so far, for me and my family, it’s definitely been a major highlight to keep us coming back for more! They also have some impeccable house-made beers, such as their bourbon stout, and their popularly known blood orange IPA.

In addition, Daft Badger is another spot that is noteworthy for dog-friendly patios. The set up is really creative here, and the vibe is immaculate for spring and summer nights.

10. Golden Handle Brewing Co. 154 S. Madison Street #100, Spokane, WA 99201 Golden Handle has so many great benefits to tap into being a brewery; it’s hard to just pick one. Some highlights are their Oooranglicious Golden Ale and Heavy Lifting Pale Ale.

Golden Handle’s brewing queen, Rachel, creates delicious beers that stand out from others and has a strong passion for supporting local Spokane nonprofits. Each month, Golden Handle picks an organization to support, and donates $1 of every pint to that organization for the entire month.

On another note, this is one of the only breweries that has mead If you’re looking for another option besides beer. Because of its uniqueness, mead is hard to come by in bars and breweries, so seeing it on their menu was a delight!

In a region where the art of brewing meets a deep appreciation for community and creativity, Spokane, Washington, emerges as a shining star on the map of beer enthusiasts. With over 426 breweries scattered throughout the state, according to the well-respected Washington Beer, the Pacific Northwest has cemented its status as a haven for those who cherish the complexities of a well-crafted pint.

stouts. Our favorites were the Dirty Chai stout, the Raspberry Cheesecake Sour, and the Heaven on Earth IPA. But really, you can’t go wrong with anything on this menu.

Making this even better, at For the Love of God Brewing, there is a perfect beer pairing to every pizza served. We tried the Spicy Thai Pizza and the Pro Figgy

It’s not just about the beer – it’s about the stories, the people, and the passion that make each brewery a unique universe of its own. From supporting local nonprofits to sharing laughter and art, these breweries go beyond the beverage, offering spaces for connection, community, and exploration. Cheers!

Pizza; both were the best pizza experience I’ve ever had.

Steve, the owner of For The Love of God Brewing, invented a space that provides a warm and welcoming feeling when customers arrive, making it one of my favorite spots to visit on this list. I saw families gathering and spending time together, enjoying their pizzas, beers, and each other’s company, which is truly what breweries are all about.

Monika Jacobson

The combination of savory and slightly sweet flavors is perfect for the season, and the protein content will keep you feeling full and energized. Hearty Quinoa

and Roasted Vegetable Salad

Start the season right with a delightful quinoa and roasted vegetable salad. Quinoa, a complete protein source, will provide you with all the essential amino acids your body needs. Toss in seasonal vegetables like roasted butternut squash, Brussels sprouts, carrots, and beets, which are rich in vitamins and minerals and naturally anti-inflammatory.

Drizzle with a tangy balsamic vinaigrette to complement the flavors, making this salad an excellent protein-packed lunch or dinner option. This also keeps well in the fridge for days (meal prep done!).

Pumpkins are not only a holiday favorite but also a great source of fiber and nutrients. Combine cooked pumpkin with protein-rich chickpeas in a creamy curry for a satisfying and warming meal.

This dish is not only vegetarian but also provides an abundance of flavor with aromatic spices like cumin, turmeric, and coriander. Serve it over brown rice or quinoa to boost the protein content even further and make it extra hearty!

Creamy Pumpkin Chickpea Curry

Acorn squash is abundant in the fall (perhaps you even grew some) and makes for an ideal vessel for this high-protein meal. Fill roasted acorn squash halves with a mixture of lean ground turkey, quinoa, cranberries, and a medley of aromatic herbs.

The combination of savory and slightly sweet flavors is perfect for the season, and the protein content will keep you feeling full and energized. You can easily substitute ground beef or a can of chickpeas for an alternative protein.

Beer Bread with Hefeweizen and Thyme Instructions: Step 1: Preheat the oven to 375º F. Lightly grease your loaf pan with avocado oil, and set aside to work on the beer bread goodness. Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and soda, salt, thyme, and sugar until well combined. Step 3: Carefully add in the Hefeweizen—it will foam up like crazy, so you have to be patient. Stir until just combined (be careful not to over mix). Step 4: Transfer the batter to your prepared baking dish, and pour the melted butter evenly over the top. It’ll look like too much, but trust me—it’s just right! Sprinkle the Panko evenly over butter. Step 5: Bake at 375º F, until golden brown and toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Should take about 40-45 minutes, depending on your oven. Make sure to cool the loaf completely on a wire rack to ensure it cools evenly. Step 6: Enjoy with COPIOUS amounts of whipped honey butter, dragged through your favorite soup or stew, or all by its lonesome. You cannot go wrong with this hometown favorite!
