RCMP say 29-year-old Bobbie Lynn Lee Moose, the victim of a homicide whose body was found in an empty lot on Nelson Road in Thompson Oct. 17, was dropped off at Walmart by her sister on Oct. 1.

She was wearing a plain black winter coat over a grey North Face jacket with red trim, black tights and black boots when she was last seen alive. Police believe she was staying with friends in Thompson between Oct. 1 and the day her body was found.

“We believe community members may have seen Bobbie between Oct. 1 and Oct. 17 and are asking them to come forward and speak with RCMP,” said Manitoba

RCMP media relations officer Sgt. Paul Manaigre in an Oct. 24 press release. “We are also asking anyone who recalls seeing someone who may have been wearing clothing that matches this description to contact us.”

A 38-year-old Thompson woman faces drug trafficking charges after Thompson RCMP executing a search warrant at a Yale Avenue residence Oct. 27 found approximately one kilogram of cocaine along with multiple digital scales and cash.

Charlene Louise Wilson was remanded into custody to await a court appearance and faces charges of drug trafficking, possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime.

Thompson RCMP seized cocaine and drug trafficking equipment from a Yale Avenue residence while executing a search warrant Oct. 27.

Police respond to false complaint of hostage situation

A false complaint from a caller believed to be in the United States prompted Thompson RCMP to dispatch general duty members and police dog services to a house in Westwood around 1 a.m. Oct. 24.

An unknown man contacted RCMP and said that he had broken into a home on Manasan Drive and was holding multiple people hostage. He said that unless he received $20,000 he would kill the hostages.

Attending officers determined that no one was being held hostage and the investiga-

tion into the identity of the caller continues.

The incident appears to be an incident of swatting, which Wikipedia defines as a criminal harassment tactic in which emergency services dispatchers are tricked into sending police to an address by claiming that a serious emergency such as a murder,

hostage situation or mental health emergency involving a suicidal or homicidal person is taking place. The practice is named for law enforcement SWAT (special weapons and tactics) units, which often use equipment to break down doors and are armed with military style automatic rifles.

Search launched after plane crashed in Family Lake near Little Grand Rapids Oct. 26

The Manitoba RCMP underwater recovery team found the body of a 49-year-old man in Family Lake near Little Grand Rapids Oct. 27 after a plane with three people on board was reported to have crashed there Saturday morning.

Driver dies after vehicle goes into ditch and rolls several times near Snow Lake One man was killed and another suffered minor injuries when a vehicle heading south from Snow Lake went into the ditch and then rolled several times Oct. 24, RCMP say.

The single-vehicle collision occurred about eight kilometres south of Snow Lake on Provincial Road 392. It was reported to Snow Lake RCMP around 7:25 p.m. Thursday and their investigation determined that the 61-year-old driver from

Snow Lake hit the shoulder of the roadway and was unable to regain control before the vehicle entered the ditch and rolled. Police say the driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time.

A passenger in the vehicle, a 52-year-old man, also from Snow Lake, was transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Snow Lake RCMP and a forensic collision reconstructionist continue to investigate the crash.

Man arrested for breaking into Mark’s Work Wearhouse in Thompson A 23-year-old Thompson man was arrested Oct. 26 after a break-in at Mark’s Work Wearhouse.

RCMP responded to a burglary alarm complaint at the store around 1:14 a.m. and arrived within minutes to find the man inside, attempting to steal merchandise. He was arrested for break-and-enter and released to appear in court at a later date.

An RCMP underwater recovery team searching Family Lake near Little Grand Rapids Oct. 27 found the body of a 49-year-old man after witnesses reported that a plane with three people on board crashed Oct. 26 around 8:30 a.m.

Witnesses told police that the plane clipped a tree before going into the water.

RCMP Search & Rescue, the underwater recovery team and a search and rescue plane from RCAF 435 Squadron in Winnipeg were dispatched to the area Oct. 26 and located plane debris on the surface of the lake, which is about 280 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg near the Manitoba-Ontario boundary.

The man is believed to have been one of the passengers in the nine-seat Otter float plane. the 39-yearold male pilot and the other passenger, a 42-year-old man, remained unaccounted for as of the afternoon of Oct. 28, when the underwater team was conducting additional dives.

Little Grand Rapids RCMP and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada continue investigating.

F1 in Schools race car design team seeks permission to compete in Texas next June

A group of R.D. Parker Collegiate students are hoping to make a trip down to Austin,Texas in June to compete in the F1 in Schools competition, where student-designed miniature Formula One race cars go head to head to see who can traverse the track the fastest.

The students and their teacher advisor appeared before the School District of Mystery Lake (SDML) board of trustees Oct. 22 to seek permission to travel internationally.

The main body of the car is carved out of synthetic foam and the vehicle must weight at least 50 grams.

“They used to be made out of balsa wood but the F1 in Schools program switched to using a certain synthetic foam … because teams were using balsa wood from different sources and they had different densities so the blocks could be the exact same size but one could weigh 140 grams one could weigh 40 grams,” said Fotis Tsitsos, one of two current team members, along with Madyson Caldwell, who was part of the previous Spirit Wolves team that competed in the event in 2018, finishing with the

Caldwell says he hopes to use what he learned last to the team’s advantage.

“It was eye opening as a teacher,” he says. “I learn-

from community involvement to your marketing to logo design to social media.

It encompasses everything.

It’s like you form your own business, so to speak.”

The 2018 Spirit Wolves team won the scrutineers’ award for having the car design that best conformed to the regulations, said Tsitsos.

“Out of every other team there in our league, our car followed the regulations and broke the least amount of rules,” he said. “It was, you could say, kind of the best-designed car.”

“Some teams will take a point deduction and break rules to have the car go faster,” says Caldwell, who hopes to obtain more sponsorships earlier in the process this time around so that the team can concentrate on the car rather than on fundraising.

“We hope to have a running working car in the next month … a couple different versions of it and then have time to test it and get the fastest car possible.

We have a track at the high school, the same track they use at the U.S. national championships, actually.”

The board will decide on the request for permission to travel internationally at a future meeting.

Lifeflight air ambulance program now being overseen by provincial Shared Health department

Manitoba’s Lifeflight air ambulance program, which transports critically ill or injured patients from beyond a 200-kilometre radius of Winnipeg, is now being overseen by the Shared Health department, the province’s health minister announced Oct. 25.

Created earlier this year, Shared Health is a department designed to co-ordinate various health care activities previously managed by multiple departments to integrate and improve their provision throughout Manitoba.

Shared Health assumed responsibility for delivering emergency medical services and patient transport – excluding municipally operated ambulance services like those in Thompson, Brandon and Winnipeg – in April, and the transfer of

Lifeflight management puts air and land transport under the day-to-day management of the same department.

“Over the past few months, our medical and clinical teams have been working closely with the Lifeflight leadership and staff to support critical care inter-facility transports from across Manitoba,” said Shared Health’s chief medical officer for emergency response services Dr. Rob Grierson in a press release. “We are committed to improving patient care across the province and will be working with our partners to develop a new model of care that is able to meet the emergency and transport needs of patients across the province.”

Health, Seniors and Active Living Minister Cameron Friesen said having one organization in charge of all patient transport “will

allow for the development of an improved, fully connected model of care for all patients in need of critical care, emergency, urgent and non-urgent emergency response.”

Critical care medical air services in Manitoba are provided by adult, neonatal and pediatric transport teams within Shared Health, as well as Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service (STARS) and Lifeflight.

Staffing of these air services depends upon individual patient’s needs and can include flight nurses with advanced critical care training and experience, physicians, advanced practice respiratory therapists and advanced care paramedics.

Forty per cent of transports between April 1 and Oct. 23 were provided by child transport teams, which were transferred to the Shared Health department in April.

“Integrating emergency response services and patient transport will result in improved service for Manitobans,” said Friesen.

Other medical departments whose management was taken over by Shared Health beginning last April included diagnostic services in the Winnipeg and Prairie Mountain regional health authorities, Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg, digital health in all regional health authorities as well as in Manitoba eHealth and CancerCare Manitoba, medical assistance in dying staff and some Winnipeg Regional Health Authority mental health program services.

A request for proposals (RFP) to look for other ways to provide air ambulance services in a more efficient manner was issued in 2018 and that RFP process continues, said Friesen.

Province and MKO encouraging citizens to get flu shots

OBITUARIES LYNN ANNETTE EARLE FUDGE July 2, 1962 – October 4, 2019 Unexpectedly, on October 4th, 2019 at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Ms. Lynn Earle Fudge, aged 47.

Beloved mother of Justin and Mike.

Lynn is survived by her children Justin and Mike, Partner Austin, Siblings Eddie, Ted, Kurt and June, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Lynn was born in Springdale, Newfoundland on July 2nd, 1962. She eventually made her way to Thompson, Manitoba, a place she called home for many years.

Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at the Salvation Army, 305 Thompson Drive, at 6:30pm. All are welcome to attend.

said Health Minister Cameron Friesen, who received his vaccination Oct. 24 at Grant Park Shoppers Drug Mart, in a press release. “The flu vaccine protects you and helps to protect those around you including infants, people with chronic illnesses such as diabetes or asthma, and those seeking treatment for cancer.

It’s about them, too.”

Manitoba has received 84 per cent of its total allotment of the flu vaccine – 240,000 doses – so far and is expected to receive the remainder in the next few weeks. Last year’s flu season saw 17 people with lab-confirmed flu die in Manitoba and 42 get admitted to intensive care units, with 228 hospitalizations in total. Those numbers were down from 2017-18, when the province hit 10-year highs for deaths (46), ICU admissions (35) and hospital admissions (505) as a result of the flu.

About a quarter of Manitobans – 336,000 people – received the flu vaccine last flu season, establishing a record.

to get the flu vaccine.

“The flu vaccine takes about two weeks to start working, so it’s important to be proactive and get your shot now, before anyone gets sick,” he said in a press release. “Health research shows that Indigenous people are particularly vulnerable to an increased risk of serious illness from the flu. Making a habit of getting your flu shot every year is a great way to protect yourself and the people around you, at home and in your First Nation, from the very young to the elderly.”

The Northern Regional Health Authority said it is especially important for people 65 and older, residents of personal care home and longterm care facilities and children aged six months to five years old to get the flu vaccine. It is also recommended for people with immune systems weakened by disease or medical treatment, those with cardiac or pulmonary disorders, children and youth ged six months to 18 years old on long-term Aspirin therapy, people with neurologic or neurodevelopmental conditions, people with diabetes and other metabolic disease,

and those with kidney disease, anemia or hemoglobinopathy.

Other people more at risk from the flu include obese people, pregnant women, health care workers and first responders, and regular caregivers of children up to five years old.

The 2019-20 flu vaccine includes two strains of influenza A (H1N1 and H3N2) and two strains of influenza B. The nasal spray form of the flu vaccine will not be available in Canada for this flu season. The southern hemisphere flu season, which can be a predictor of the northern hemisphere flu season, was a moderate one.

Flu shot clinics are taking place Oct. 31 and later in Northern Manitoba communities including Cormorant, Cranberry Portage, Gillam, Ilford, Pikwitonei, Sherridon, Snow Lake, The Pas, Thicket Portage and Wabowden. Flu shots are given in Thompson from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday at the NRHA administration building next to the hospital. The first period ended up with neither team finding the back of the net. Brandon McKay started the scoring early in the second period before La Broquerie took a 2–1 lead late into the period.

Defenceman Keegan Keough tied the game with a shot from the point with under two minutes left in the second period.

The third period was a left up to the goaltenders, as Isaak Weenusk stopped everything that came his way. With four minutes left Gurniak pounced on a loose puck in front La Broquerie’s net to win the match 3–2 and put his team into the gold medal game.

Pumpkin muffins Soft and perfectly spiced, these delicious pumpkin muffins are sure to delight the palate of young and old alike. The perfect dessert for your Halloween gatherings!

INGREDIENTS (Makes 12 muffins) • 3 cups all-purpose flour • 2 cups sugar • 1 tsp. salt • 2 tsps. baking soda • 1/2 tsp. baking powder • 2 tsps. cinnamon • 1 tsp. ground nutmeg • 1 tsp. ground allspice • 3 eggs • 2 cups homemade or store-bought pumpkin purée (see note) • 2/3 cup vegetable oil • 2 tbsps. sugar frosting • Cooked pieces of pumpkin (optional) • Fresh mint leaves • Whole nuts (of your choice) DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 180 °C (350 °F).

2. In a large bowl, mix the dry ingredients and set aside.

3. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, pumpkin purée and vegetable oil. Combine with the dry ingredients and carefully mix together with a spatula until perfectly blended.

The power outage began during a snowstorm around 7 p.m. Oct. 26, CTV News reported, and Manitoba Hydro said that poor weather conditions made it difficult for crews to find what caused the outage, which affected about 1,200 customers. Crews could not fly overhead to survey the damage and find the problem, so they had to search by foot, ATV and boat. The cause of the outage was found Sunday afternoon, Manitoba Hydro said, but additional resources had to be called in from Thompson to repair the damage.

“We are very concerned about the well-being of the elders, the dialysis patients,

the sick, and the very young people in Pimicikamak and Cross Lake,” said Pimicikamak Cree Nation Chief David Monias in a press release sent out by Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday. “We are acting in the best interests of our vulnerable citizens. While we do hope that hydro will be restored later today, we need to take necessary precautions to protect the lives of our community members by evacuating them out of the community as soon as possible.”

A Red Cross spokesperson told CTV News that its services had been activated and it was communicating with the community to see how it could support them.

Power appeared to have been restored to all customers by 10:30 p.m. Oct. 27, CTV News reported.

TITLE: Home and Community Care Nurse – LPN or RN/BN (Full Time/Permanent) 2 positions available Job Summary The Nisichawayasihk First Nation is seeking a Home & Community Care Nurse. Working within the context of a client & family centered health care delivery model; based on a philosophy of self-care management and in accordance with the vision and values of the Family and Community Wellness Centre Inc. and in accordance with CRNM Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics and Manitoba Health. The nurse will comply with the practice standards, service delivery plans, delivery and evaluation of the care needs of acutely, chronically and terminally ill clients in the community settings, initiating referrals to other professionals or agencies where required.

Demonstrated Skills & Abilities • Knowledge of acute and chronic disease management in First Nations Communities • Advanced nursing assessment and care plan maintenance skills • Ability to adapt clinical and professional skills to the home and community settings • Ability to work independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team • Ability to prioritize needs and organize work to accomplish workload • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, ability to speak Cree would be an asset Qualifications • Active Registration with College of Registered Nurses.

• Two years’ experience as a Home Care Nurse or an equivalent combination of training, education and experience.

• Knowledgeable of community based programming and First Nations culture, traditions & values.

• Valid Driver’s License, BLS/CPR & satisfactory criminal records check & child abuse registry check.

• Wound Care Certification would be considered an asset • Foot Care Certification would be considered an asset If you are a resident of Thompson transportation is provided daily to and from Nelson House.

Conducting interviews and assessments, compiling case particulars for Court, investigating/follow up on allegations of child protection issues, maintaining regular visits, ensuring accurate and timely documentation, developing long/short term case plans, developing/ facilitating workshops, community education and networking with collateral resources/services.
