October 19, 2:00 p.m. marked the official grand opening of the new expanded building of the Thompson Ford Service & Maintenance Auto Repair. It was 1993, October 1st that Ford was first brought to our community where this momentous occasion marks that 30 year celebration.

This event particularly showed their desire to serve the community to the best of their ability, where as aside from relying on their services, they had thousands of dollars worth of personal items represented giving into the community, such as flat screen TV’s and a truckload of food.

General Manager; Kevin Kelleher expressed his passion for the company and how they as a family have strived to maintain a ‘family oriented company’.

Kelleher said family was the “heartbeat” of the company, family run, for other families, because who’s there for you more then your personal loved ones?

Vale gives $80,000 to animal health and wellness center

Giving more accessible, affordable veterinary

We all care for our pets, and we all seek to give them the attention they need.

Thanks to Vale Manitoba Operations (Vale), Thompson Neighborhood Renewal Corporation (TNRC) was able to open up a local Spade and Neuter Clinic for animals, by giving an $80,000 grant.

The unofficial, soft opening was held on Saturday Oct. 21st where the large check was presented, making way for TNRC to begin operation towards the health of both beloved pets and abandoned, abused animals.

Although their staff is highly trained, the original board members themselves started this with no more then a passion. “As board members, none of us are vets” TNRC Executive Director; Oswald Sawh stated, further explaining that it’s more their love for animals, and the goal to fulfill a need of the North that enabled him to hire “Key staff” from the “One Health Program”

and “Thompson Humane Society” and open clinics such as this.

“This is just something I think everyone is passionate about. It’s been something that’s been a big worry for people of Thompson to have another service, and then also for animals that need it” said Stacy Kennedy, Director of Manitoba Operations for Vale.

Up till now Northern veterinary services have been difficult to find or afford along with the shortage of staff and clinics. Their goal is to increase the amount of times they work per year which is currently in the works to be approved for February.

Sawh explained that “The intent of this building is to help complement and support the existing services we have. We want to expand into the community further” And ‘expand into the community’ he has, now after having a clinic out in March and another in the New Year. Sawh said that his hopes were to have 4-6 clinics here each year.

Manitoba’s First Nations leaders celebrate news that a federal court approved a multi-billion dollar on-reserve child-welfare services settlement, but warn there’s still plenty of work to be done.

by First Nations, and that is part of Canada’s colonial and racist legacy,” Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) Grand Chief Cathy Merrick said in a Wednesday media release.

The Assembly of First Nations and the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society first launched a human-rights complaint in 2007 regarding what they said was “long-standing underfunding of the on-reserve First Nations Child and Family Services system.”

In 2016, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal found that the federal government’s treatment of First Nations child welfare was “reckless,” and found that First Nations people and communities were being negatively impacted by the CFS services provided by the government.

“The panel finds that it has sufficient evidence to find that Canada’s conduct was wilful and reckless, resulting in what we have referred to as the worst-case scenario under our Act,” the ruling states.

“This case of racial discrimination is one of

the worst possible cases warranting the maximum awards.”

The proposed settlement includes $23 billion in compensation for more than 300,000 children and their families, and the federal government will also spend an additional $20 billion to reform the child welfare system.

“The settlement agreement was reached because of the ongoing advocacy efforts for more than 15 years,” Merrick said. “It recognizes the harmful effects of racially discriminatory policies on First Nations and offers long overdue compensation to First Nations children and families.

“Of course, it is important to acknowledge that no amount of money can fully rectify the significant harm experienced by First Nations children and families, however, it represents a commitment to shaping a future that offers promise and fairness for First Nations children and families.”

Merrick added that First Nations leaders are also now looking for a public apology from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to “apologize on behalf of the government to the children and families who were the victims of the

discrimination.”

Plans on exactly how the money will now be distributed are still being finalized.

“The AMC looks forward to timely and comprehensive compensation for the affected children and families,” Merrick said. “The AMC anticipates further efforts towards reforming the CFS system and eradicating the ongoing systemic discrimination against First Nations.”

In a post on X, (formerly Twitter) Minister of Indigenous Service Patty Hajdu praised the court’s decision.

“It’s a historic day for so many First Nations families who have waited so long for this,” Hajdu wrote.

“Although nothing can make up for the harm and pain it caused, compensation is essential to moving forward.

“We will continue working on a historic reform of our programs so that this never happens again.”

NAV CANADA Building Job Interest

An organization reaching out to the public for unique job opportunities

NAV CANADA is a private, non-for-profit corporation that operates Canada’s air traffic control and civil air navigation system under the auspices of the Civil Air Navigation Services Commercialization Act, founded in 1996, working with aviation stakeholders and partners to build a company wide culture of safety.

When flying 30,000 feet in the air you want to ensure the safety is maintained returning to the ground. Yes, honour is due to the pilot, but the biggest factor that determines life and death can be summed up in one word; communication.

High up in the radio tower of the airport grounds are workers under the NAV CANADA corporation referred to as Flight Service Specialists (FSS) who guide and direct all pilots to the destination, safely.

When the call is given that flights are arriving, the FSS may have only seconds to make it to the proper post and give immediate reports.

You would think most the work is automated, but in reality the computers only give certain stats, when the controls are left in their

hands manually.

“95% of our job is in traffic” Says the Operational Supervisor; Colin Lowen, who has worked at this facility for 16 years “The secondary part of our job is hourly weather observation. Every hour you log the cloud status” Colin goes on to explain the tedious pieces pertaining to the job, where even what you might expect to be automated is actually manual control, such as the lights on the night time runway. The correct one must be lit up at the right time for a specific departing or arriving flight.

A job as advanced as this we may think its untouchable for the consumer, when in reality they are currently seeking for interest of those who want to hold the World on their shoulders and apply.

The attainable requirements are mainly a 1 year commitment of the applicant so they can go through the required training and have onsite experience.

Gareth Murison; a recently qualified FSS expressed his challenging, yet greatly rewarding process in successfully completing “The training program and qualifying is very, very challenging. But when you do it’s worth it”. Gareth went on to explain the pacing of the job

and how addicting the thrill is when you have a split second to make coordinating information between each pilot, airline and the given stats smoothly, promptly and organized.

Between the rush of flights there is also commonly waiting periods like a ‘peace before the storm’.

In these moments there’s provided enjoyments such as a kitchen & BBQ area, a full workout gym, and a TV. lounge. Each station is worked around a two hour rotation between trafficking flights, logging the weather and time off in the break rooms thought the day.

Build success from the inside out

Why you need to examine workplace culture We all know people who speak often and loudly about how people should be and how they should behave, but they rarely practice what they preach. Take a moment to consider these people. Do you count on them? Do you trust them?

Are they the first people you turn to when you need something, big or small?

Four men from Easterville are wanted by police in connection with an assault that left another man with serious injuries.

Chemawawin RCMP were alerted around 11 a.m. March 11 that a 24-year-old man was being taken to the Easterville nursing station for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Investigation determined that four men entered the victim’s home earlier that morning, assaulting him and causing extensive damage before leaving.

QUEST program aims to get communities to net-zero quicker

QUEST Canada is working with communities across Canada to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with the Net-Zero Communities Accelerator Program (NCA).

The goal is to provide communities with the tools and training that will increase the efficiency of their systems while reaching a net-zero emissions goal by 2050.

“It started off in New Brunswick (New Brunswick Smart Energy Communities Accelerator) and we’ve had huge success working with different communities and municipalities and the First Nations communities,” said Omar Farag, projects senior lead for QUEST. “We thought it would be a good idea to expand it and the Prairies Cohort is the second phase of that project.”

Ten communities will participate in the NCA facilitated through QUEST Canada and its partners, including the Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources, the Community Energy Association, Eco-Oest Canada/ Eco-West Canada and the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre.

The Prairies Cohort includes the Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation, the St. Theresa Point First Nation and the community of De Salaberry in Manitoba. The towns of Biggar and Gravelbourg are the only centres in Saskatchewan involved.

St. Albert, Pincher Creek, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Devon, all in Alberta, are also included.

“It’ll make a local environmental and economic impact and really co-create solutions with these communities to get to net-zero quicker and make brands that are durable for the long haul,” said Seth Leon, program manager.

“These are communities that want to be, let’s say, ahead of the game when it comes to their energy.”

Each community will be provided with a variety of training in the areas of energy efficiency, emissions, resilience planning and implementation to increase renewable energy use.

“What we do is we basically have huge streams within this program,” said Farag.

“One is a project initiation stream and the other is capacity building.”

If a community is already on its net-zero journey and has already established strategies, then it will be placed in

the project initiation stream, whereas if it is just starting out it will be placed in the capacity-building stream.

Whichever stream they are currently in, each of the communities will be connected with experts, peers and funding opportunities to support their goals.

There is a slightly different approach taken for First Nations as compared to municipalities, said Farag.

The municipalities will go through a benchmarking tool, which “gauges where the community is at so it gives the community a score in different criteria and, based on that after we’ve done all the work with them, we will re-benchmark the community and see how much they’ve improved,” Farag said.

The Indigenous communities will not go through benchmarking, but instead work will be based on the overall community energy need.

“It’s kind of more of a, I’d say, like more of a storytelling approach versus a numbers approach. So, we’ll sit down with different demographics within the community and talk to them about energy.”

Each community will

progress for two or three years and then it will be reevaluated to assess progress and provided a community energy and emissions plan to allow each to replicate the exercises into the future.

Leon said the program will have positive impacts on more than controlling a community’s emissions. It will also have benefits that include control of local dollars currently used to pay energy bills, and the creation of local job opportunities. “(It’s) really trying to put the community in the driver’s seat,” said Leon.

“It’s important for this work, in general around getting to net-zero, for Indigenous communities to be at the forefront of this.

The challenge of getting to net-zero is going to look different in Indigenous communities just given issues of remote(ness) and aspects that way. But, at the same time, I think there’s a lot of local leadership and local knowledge to create plans that will be custom built to be successful in those communities… It’s really about working together for a plan that’s going to be durable.”

Violence and murder of Indigenous women ‘normalized,’ says victim’s daughter

The tragic story of a Manitoba woman murdered and disposed of at a garbage dump is now a focal point of an Ontario-based organization’s campaign to bring awareness to domestic violence and violence against women in Canada.

don-Abused Women's Centre (LAWC) in London, Ontario kicked off their 2023 Shine the Light on Woman Abuse campaign.

Since 2010, the campaign has grown from what was originally a small and mostly grassroots effort to what LAWC said is now an “internationally recognized awareness campaign, exposing men's violence against

OBITUARY ELTON ARGYLE DUNSEATH

1939–2023 Elton Dunseath was born in Dauphin, MB to William and Eretta Dunseath who were farmers south of Grandview in the district of Tamarisk. He was the eldest of two sons. His younger brother, Allan, died at age three in 1947. The family moved into Grandview in 1952. Elton’s family attended the Grandview Pentecostal Church where he accepted Christ as his Saviour at the age of ten.

Elton learned his admirable work ethic from his parents and had a goal of attending a private Christian high school away from home. By age 16, he had worked enough to reach his financial goal and put himself through grades 10 and 11 at Two Rivers Bible Institute in Nipawin, SK, and later Caronport High School in Caronport, SK, graduating in 1959. Following high school, Elton attended Bethel Bible College in Saskatoon, SK. One evening, at a friend’s home in the fall of 1959, Elton met a lovely young lady, Florence Fleming. They began dating with their first date at a Youth for Christ event in Saskatoon. Their romance continued throughout his time at Bethel and continued after Elton graduated Bible School in 1961.

In March of 1962, Elton moved to Thompson, MB, to begin working at the newly opened nickel mine. Elton and Florence married in August of 1962 and together they stayed in Thompson for 45 years. Elton and Florence were both founding members of the Thompson Pentecostal Assembly, where Elton was a board member, treasurer, and usher. He was also one of the ambitious men who pioneered and built Northern Pentecostal Camp on Setting Lake. Elton worked for INCO as foreman in the Sample House until his retirement in 1993. He later went on to work at H & R Block in Thompson and then Winkler preparing taxes for clients for 18 years.

Elton enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and friends at their cottage located on Setting Lake. Many hours were spent fishing and boating. Elton and Florence moved to Winkler in 2006 and soon started attending the Morden Alliance Church. Most summers were still spent at their cottage on Setting Lake. He also loved to drive, taking great joy going on road trips at first with his truck and trailer and then later hitting the road in the Motorhome. Elton and Florence also took several European vacations together and many sun destination vacations with friends and family. However, their favourite place to be was the beauty of Setting Lake.

Florence passed away in December 2017, which was a difficult time for Elton. A few years later he was fortunate to reconnect with a woman named Maggie Barnett who had been a friend since childhood. They fell in love and were married in April of 2020. Together they have enjoyed three years of marriage. The two enjoyed travelling together visiting family and friends across Canada and the USA. Elton became ill at the end of July and entered the hospital at the beginning of September. He was surrounded by both family and friends until his death on Saturday, October 21. Elton’s favorite Bible passages included Psalm 121 and John chapter 3 and 14.

Elton was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Florence (Fleming), parents, William and Eretta (Hamilton), his brother, Allan and sister, Margaret Dunseath, brothers-in-law, Ron Fleming, Laverne Clary, Edward Barnett, and John Donald. He was also predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law (married), Devey and Lynda Barnett.

He is survived by his wife, Maggie (Barnett), daughter, Brenda and husband, Ned Shuman of Fair Oaks, CA, daughter, Donna Dunseath and Chuck Burns of Calgary AB, and his son, David and wife, Lori of Winkler, MB. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Mackenzie, Riise, and Camryn Dunseath as well as Matthew and Jonathan Shuman. He will be mourned by Maggie’s two sons, Gerald and wife, Retta Deslauriers of Grandview, MB and Chris and wife, Debrah Deslauriers of Fairford, MB and their families, a sister-in-law, Ruth Clary of Surry BC, a sister and brother-in-law, Myrtle and Bentley Medd of Qualicum BC, a sisterin-law, Brenda Fleming of Edmonton, AB, a sister-in-law, Ann Barnett, brother and sister-in-law, Bert and Loreta Barnett, sister-in-law, Ellen Donald all of Grandview, MB, as well as many Hamilton and Dunseath cousins and Clary, Medd, and Fleming nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at the Morden Alliance Church. Public interment will be prior to service at 12:00 p.m. at Westridge Memorial Gardens in Winkler.

As part of the campaign, the organization posthumously honours women and girls who have lost their lives as the result of male violence, and on Saturday Morgan Harris of Winnipeg was named a 2023 LAWC “silent witness.”

Harris is one of four women believed to be victims of an accused serial killer. The remains of both Harris and fellow victim Marcedes Myran are believed to be in the Prairie Green Landfill, north of Winnipeg.

A life-size, red-silhouette image of Harris was revealed on Saturday, which included a plaque telling the 39-year-old woman’s story before she was murdered in 2022.

The plague ends with the

phrase “#SearchTheLandfills” which has in recent months become a rallying cry for families and advocates who want the Prairie Green Landfill searched for the remains of Harris and Myran.

While speaking at the event, Cambria Harris, the daughter of Morgan Harris, said violence against women in Winnipeg is far too common.

“We live in a black-andwhite society where it is far too normalized watching Indigenous women go missing and murdered,” Cambria said.

60 years young May 13, 1963 – September 21, 2023 On September 21, 2023, Patricia Amanda Gareau, “Trish” (Roy), died peacefully at home in Niverville, MB with loved ones by her side. She fought hard through her battle with bladder cancer and will be remembered for her courage and willpower that inspired many. She is survived by her devoted husband Rene, her daughters Nicole (Justin) and Michelle (Kat) who were her pride and joy, and the light of her life that made her a grandma, Nahla Olive.

Trish was born in Glasgow, Scotland to David and Shirley Roy and immigrated to Thompson, MB shortly after turning 5. She attended Burntwood and Deerwood Elementary and graduated from RD Parker Collegiate in 1981. After meeting the love of her life and starting a family of her own, Trish joined the mining industry with Weber Supply. She discovered a knack for numbers and organizing that helped her excel.

Becoming the manager of Acklands Grainger was one of her proudest achievements as a hard-working woman in a male dominated industry.

Trish had an innate ability to create family out of friends and coworkers.

Her networking skills led to a time-keeper clerk position at Birchtree Mine. She prided herself on keeping “her guys” in line while making sure everyone there was supported. She was a mother hen, and many looked to her for advice or a kind ear. After Rene’s retirement from Inco, they both decided to start a new adventure and moved to Marchand in 2014. Trish worked as a term with Canada Post, but soon found herself excited to join the team at Manitoba Hydro in Steinbach. She was dedicated to her crew and proud of her contributions, especially and stubbornly adamant on working from home throughout chemo. Her family at Manitoba Hydro supported her through every critical period of her many treatments and recoveries, for which we are forever grateful.

Those who knew Trish would describe her as a social butterfly. She enjoyed years of curling, bowling, and softball with her friends, and volunteering for bonspiels, tournaments, Ducks Unlimited and Relay for Life. She adored her family and holiday gatherings (especially Halloween and Christmas), cooking big meals to feed an army and planning parties that helped her share her joy of crafts, decorating and gift giving. She was a huge movie and reality TV buff, and watching the Oscars, Survivor and the Bachelor won’t be the same without her extravagant office pool charts, nomination packages and colourful opinionated commentary.

She was a big personality in the tiniest cardigan clad woman, affectionately known to her daughters as “Little Mommy”, Rene’s “crazy bird” and Nahla’s “Gamma Tish”. She was fiercely loyal to a fault, wore her heart on her sleeve and will be missed beyond measure by those she leaves behind. She is survived by her sisters Helen (Rex), Lindsay (Scott), Fiona (Wade) and Davina (David), her nieces and nephews Amanda, Richard, Kevin (Katie), Ashley (Lawrence), Kimberley (Austin), Danielle (Kristopher), Rochelle, Jade, Chantal (Brandon), and Danny (Christina) and all of her great nephews and nieces. Trish now rests with her parents and younger brother David in peace, and was surely greeted by her beloved family dogs Cocoa and Mojo (and fur grandbabies Peter, Ritchot, Buddy and Summit).

Conservation group protects endangered owls

Burrowing owls, one of Canada’s most endangered species, have now been granted further protection in southwestern Manitoba thanks two new conservation areas announced by Nature Conservancy of Canada on Wednesday.

Representatives from the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) gathered in Melita, located 131 kilometres southwest of Brandon and known as the Grassland Bird Capital of Manitoba, to announce that they’d be protecting over 500 hectares of native prairie and wetland habitats near the communities of Broomhill and Sifton.

Significant and rapid habitat loss means that these lands now stand among the last bastions of native mixed-grass prairie in the province, an ecosystem which is critical for many at-risk species, including the endangered burrowing owl. In Manitoba, it is estimated that 90 per cent of native prairie grassland has already been lost, creating an urgent concern for the species, communities, farmers, producers, and people who rely on them, said Josh Dillabough, NCC’s natural area manager in Manitoba.

“We want to thank everyone who made these two important conservation projects possible. By working together, we can protect Manitoba’s natural gems and sustain healthy communities for wildlife, plants, and people,”

Dillabough said.

The Jackson Pipestone Prairie and Wetlands project features almost 530 hectares of native prairie and wetlands, with Jackson Creek and its floodplain area making up the remainder. In addition to burrowing owls, also calling the region home are the chestnut-collared longspur, a threatened species; the threatened bobolink; and the Baird’s sparrow, which is classified as of special concern.

The project is located within two internationally recognized Important Bird Areas, and portions of the project are made up of sustainably pastured lands that support birds, such as the red-necked phalarope (which is also of special concern), lesser yellowlegs, black-crowned night herons, and tundra swan.

The NCC says the former owners of the lands the project is made up of are largely to thank for the vibrant diversity of birdsong and prairie species that can be observed on them today.

The Gervin family has been involved in burrowing owl recovery since the 1980s, working with the Manitoba Burrowing Owl Recovery Program (MBORP) since its inception in 2020 to protect habitat for the endangered bird species across their properties and support their reintroduction.

In 2019, the family was awarded the Prairie Conservation Award for Manitoba, in recognition of their dedication to the stewardship of their lands. Now under the stewardship of

the NCC, the family’s love of the land can continue in perpetuity, the organization says.

Recently, MBORP has observed wild owls in the project area that are using artificial nest burrows that the program has installed for extra protection for nesting burrowing owls, said Alexandra Froese, founder and executive director of the program.

“Without people and organizations like the Gervins and NCC working to protect spaces like the Jackson Pipestone Prairie for species like the burrowing owl, the burrowing owl will disappear from Manitoba,” she said.

The NCC is also working with livestock producers who graze cattle across the Prairie grasslands, which helps support the health of the Prairies while also helping to create a strong livestock industry.

The new project is a part of the NCC’s Prairie Grasslands Action Plain, which looks to conserve more than 500,000 hectares by 2030, an area six times the size of Calgary. The organization has already raised 90 per cent of the funds needed to secure and steward the land in southern Manitoba. The conservation projects were supported through funding from residents and businesses, and additional support came from Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Nature Fund and Nature Smart Climate Solutions Funds. Contributions were also made by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Portage’s National Residential School Museum honoured by Travel Manitoba

A museum that commemorates the history of residential schools from inside one of this province’s only remaining residential school buildings was honoured last week for offering the best Indigenous tourism experiences in Manitoba.

Travel Manitoba handed out its 2023 Manitoba Tourism Awards, which recognize outstanding contributions to the province’s tourism industry, last Thursday at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) in Winnipeg.

The award ceremony included the annual category for best Indigenous Tourism business or operator in Manitoba, and this year’s award was won by the National Indian Residential School Museum of Canada.

The national museum is set up in the building that was formerly the Portage la Prairie Indian Residential School, which operated from around 1915 until 1975.

Unlike most former residential schools that were torn down after closing, the

building, which has been designated a national historic site, still stands, and is one of only three former residential school buildings in Manitoba still standing.

Travel Manitoba said in a media release that the museum plays an integral role in conveying the legacy of the residential school era through its displays, and through stories of a “once government-sponsored and church-run residential school system imposed on Indigenous peoples where assimilation efforts focused on destroying their identities, cultures and languages.”

“The purpose is to both create a memorial to those who went through the experience to honour them, and to help many of the survivors with their journey of healing,” Travel Manitoba said.

Lorraine Daniels, the museum’s executive director said one of the main goals of the museum is to give as truthful and accurate an account as possible of what day-to-day life would have been like for Indigenous children who were forced into residential schools, despite the fact that those stories can often be dark

and unsettling.

“You need to reveal the truth no matter how hurtful, and ugly, and painful that truth is, because the truth sets us free,” Daniels said in a previous interview. “I want people to learn the truth, and that is why this museum is so important.

“We need people to be educated about the real experiences of the survivors, so we can all heal together.”

The museum features historic artifacts, documents, photographs and displays, all meant to educate those who come through its doors about the history of the residential school system.

One display shows a typical bed a child would have had to sleep on at the school and a mannequin of a young child wearing a typical uniform and haircut that Indigenous children would have been forced to wear in a residential school.

Artifacts from the former school now housed in the museum include school photos, a display of the straps teachers would use to punish children, and a number of pieces of artwork.

Curling kicks off for the winter

Well winter has made it’s first appearance for the tale end of the year as we’re already seeing winter sports and festivities in the making. This past Wednesday the Burntwood Curling Club began it’s weekly games, opening to the public the interest of both seasoned and beginner individuals.

The Burntwood Curling venue is situated in the University College of the North (UCN), with 6 full lanes to the disposal of players for absolutely no admission fee. Their motto: “Champions Start Small”. A motto such as this seems fitting, as Thompson is home residence of Manitoba Curl President Sam Antila.

Antila still resides in Thompson to this day and frequently holds tournaments at the UCN curling rink with his league; the Super League.

the representatives this first week were well seasoned in the sport of curling, with background stemming to as young as 8 years old.

As it may seem to the inexperienced outsider curling is a simple sport, there is in fact a complex strategy to the game, taking in the angles such as a game of pool, and the diverse playing patterns such as chess.

Curling representative Konrad Jonasson explaned how just like chess, you may have one strategy to start with that changes as the game progresses.

Cabin fever can get us all stirring as the cold sets in and it seems there’s not enough going on around us to keep us active. But with events such as the Burntwood Curling Club They’re trusting that as the weeks continue, interest of new individuals will increase and they can welcome or train up people of the community this season. ~Matthias J. Manitoba Métis Federation celebrates legal victory over Métis National Council

The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) say they have won a “clear and overwhelming” legal victory, after a judge ordered the Métis National Council (MNC) to pay more than $200,000 of MMF’s legal costs, relating to an ongoing and increasingly hostile legal battle between the two organizations.

On Thursday, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice ordered MNC to pay $213,687.57 to MMF for legal costs.

The former ally organizations have been battling in the courts since last January, when MNC filed a statement of claim seeking $16 million in damages from 11 defendants.

Named in the suit are former MNC official and current MMF President David Chartrand, former MNC president Clément Chartier, former MNC official Wenda

Watteyne, and well as the entire MMF organization.

Chartrand had been involved with the MNC for more than two decades in a number of roles before leaving the organization in 2021, and Chartier was president of MNC from 2003 before resigning in 2021.

But a growing dispute between the organizations saw Chartrand suddenly pull MMF out of MNC in September of 2021, and at that time MMF said it was because MNC was allowing membership into the organization of people with invalid or questionable claims to Red River Métis citizenship.

The lawsuit claims that while still in their roles with MNC, Chartrand, Chartier and others were taking money that belonged to MNC and putting it instead into the hands of MMF and MMF officials, an accusation Chartrand continues to adamantly deny.

The costs awarded this

week are related to MNC’s motion for interim possession of the funds for the Métis Veterans Legacy Program and the Métis Historical Database, a motion that was denied by a judge back in July.

Chartrand is now accusing MNC of wasting the legal system’s time, and wasting Métis people’s money with the lawsuit.

“Today’s decision highlights the frivolous nature of the MNC’s claims,” Chartrand said. “The organization is wasting the Court’s time and the financial resources of Métis people for the sole purpose of destroying reputations.

“Remember, the legal fees MNC must pay are in addition to their own. Simply put, is this money taken from the kitchen tables of Métis families in Saskatchewan and Alberta?

“Métis deserve better from those who claim to represent their interests.”

Chartrand added he is

happy with the judge’s decision in July not to approve MNC’s motion for interim possession of funds for the Métis Veterans Legacy and Métis Historical Databases.

“The priority for the MMF will always be ensuring justice for Red River Métis Veterans who answered the call to serve their country during times of peace and times of global conflict,” Chartrand said “I will defend the legacy of our Veterans so they are never forgotten, it would be a travesty to take this away from them.

“I will not let it happen.”

According to MMF, the MNC was also ordered to pay them $50,000 relating to another unsuccessful motion back in September, bringing the total amount of MMF legal fees paid for by MNC in the lawsuit so far to more than $250,000.

Manitoba premier to host meeting about potential landfill search for murder victims

Families and advocates who continue to push for a search of a Manitoba landfill for the remains of two murdered Indigenous women will meet with Manitoba’s new premier on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Long Plain First Nation Chief Kyra Wilson confirmed that she will be in attendance at a meeting scheduled for Thursday afternoon with family members of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran and Premier Wab Kinew.

For months family members of Harris and Myran have been asking all levels of government to move forward with a search of the Prairie Green Landfill north of Winnipeg for the remains of Harris and Myran, who

police say were killed and dumped at the landfill by an alleged serial killer.

Jeremy Skibicki faces first-degree murder charges in the deaths of Harris and Myran, as well as for the death of Rebecca Contois, whose remains were found by police last year at the Brady Road Landfill and an unidentified woman Indigenous leaders are calling Buffalo Woman whose remains have not been found.

In June, then Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson announced her decision not to offer any assistance with a landfill search because of “health and safety concerns” raised in a feasibility report for those who would be conducting a search.

The FE Supervisor will monitor the FE Worker’s travel budget and provide support to the FE Workers in their respective communities. The FE Supervisor will provide quarterly reports to the FE Manager.
