On the evening of Oct. 16, an unidentified man stole around $100 from the Beastly Boutique pet store after smashing the establishment’s front window with a rock. The robbery took place around 7 p.m. and owner Vickie McNevin witnessed the entire event unfold. “I was in the back filling the water bowls and I heard this crash and I thought it was the dogs knocking something over,” she said. “I didn’t think it was somebody coming through the front frickin’ window.” After grabbing the front desk’s donation box and enduring some harsh words from McNevin the suspect fled on foot, leaving shards of broken glass in his wake. McNevin describes the suspect as a 25- to 30-year-old male, standing at around 5’6” and wearing a black tuque, grey hoodie and dark pants. Since the store also doubles as an animal rescue, Northern Manitoba Paws in Need, McNevin’s primary concern at the time of the robbery was making sure that all the animals were safe and accounted for.

“All the dogs were OK,” she said. “Luckily none of them were in the window [when it happened].” Aside from reporting the incident to police, McNevin is also talking with her insurance company to see if they will pay to replace the window, which she believes could cost around $1,000. This isn’t the first time that McNevin has had to deal with this kind of break-in. In May 2015 a person or group of people broke into Beastly Boutique in nearly the same fashion, getting away with a Mac computer, and a total of $1,800, about $1,000 of which was donation money. While the amount of money stolen wasn’t nearly as much this time around, McNevin said it still makes an impact for her small business. “It’s not a huge amount of money. I get it,” she said. “[But] every penny helps when you have a $3,000 vet bill to cover for sick animals.” In the wake of this break-in, McNevin says that business at Beastly Boutique will proceed as usual. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Thompson RCMP at 204-677-6909.
