The Wanaka Autumn Art School is celebrating its 30th annual school this week at Mt Aspiring College.

Established in 1990 to provide local people with the opportunity to attend classes with highly talented tutors from out of the area, the school has grown and developed since then to attract not only local participants, but many from all over the country. The school still prides itself on the high calibre of tutors from New Zealand and Australia teaching each year.

We’re excited to have a great line-up for this year and some 200 people attending from as far afield as Australia and Tahiti. Many of them have been keen

supporters of the school for many years. Courses, some new, some old favourites, include writing, painting and drawing, nature journaling, photography, stencilling, mixed media, book arts, jewellery, mosaics, singing, stitching and our regular fly fishing. Many of the students will be exploring our stunning landscape as part of their classes during the week.

By the time you read this the long Easter Weekend will be over, and the influx of visitors to Wanaka will be safely back in their home towns.

Local police have had only positive feedback from ‘Wheels at Wanaka’ and the NZ Jetsprint Champs, so it is good to know that these events went without a hitch.

On Monday the 15th April, a local man was charged with assault as a result of our investigation into the previous weeks’ assault at the Lake Hawea Hotel. Police also dealt with a minor vehicle incident in the New World carpark.

Remember that if you are reversing out of a park, you must ensure that the space behind you is clear throughout the manoeuvre.

On Tuesday, two female tourists were dealt with after the Warehouse at Queenstown, reported the theft of some items.

On Wednesday police attended a non-injury crash north of Lake Hawea near Glen Dene Station involving a foreign driver.

On Thursday the 19th, police dealt with a trespass complaint at a Hopkins Street address in Luggate where those involved had been drinking. A local man was processed that evening for drink-driving as well. On Friday, a local man was arrested for shop-lifting at New World in Dunmore Street, and he goes to court next week.

On Saturday night another local man was processed for drink-driving.

Over the past week a number of business premises in the Wanaka-Cromwell area have been broken into. It is important that if cash or valuables are left on site then the premises have CCTV and/or alarms installed. Owners are asked to be vigilant and report to police any instances of suspicious vehicles or people hanging around, or who appear to be ‘casing’ your premises, write down vehicle registrations or take a photo. Make staff aware of what’s going on.

Remember to carry out those winter vehicle checks. Check tyre tread, put the chains in the boot, make sure the antifreeze is topped up, and carry the windscreen ice-scraper.
