WANAKA PRIDE WEEK

Wānaka Pride Week is almost here! From Wednesday 3 to Saturday 6 September, OUT&about Wānaka will host four days of film, drag, music, dancing and plenty of community fun.

Now in its third year, Pride Week has grown into a much-loved highlight on the local calendar, bringing people together through visibility and connection.

“This is a feel-good week where everyone is welcome,” says Event Manager Celine Van Der Eecken. “We’re creating a space where people can be exactly who they are, and feel celebrated for it.”

The programme begins with the Queer Film Festival on Wednesday, followed by Queers n Beers on Thursday. Friday brings the ever-popular Drag Bingo, before Saturday bursts into colour with the Pride

Street Party. The day kicks off with the Pride Ride, where cyclists parade along the lakefront from the Wānaka Rugby Fields to the Lake Wānaka Centre. The Street Party will feature live music, drag, Fox & Badger, market stalls, and whānau-friendly activities.

The week wraps up in style with Pride After Dark, Wānaka’s ultimate late-night pride party (R18). Locals are warmly welcomed to get involved, whether by volunteering, baking or simply showing up to celebrate.

Alongside the festivities, OUT&about are supporting a two-day Youth Mental Health First Aid course in partnership with Path Wānaka and Community Link, strengthening wellbeing in the community.

The Albert Town Community Association (ATCA) invites you to a free, hands-on fruit tree pruning workshop at the Templeton Orchard. Proudly supported by Queenstown Lakes District Council and led by local gardening expert Ben Elms (Dr Compost). Join us on Saturday, 30 August, from 9.00am to 1.00pm, with a shared morning tea. This practical session will teach key pruning skills to keep fruit trees healthy and productive. Whether you have one apple tree or a small orchard, you’ll gain the con dence to care for them. Bring your loppers and pruning saws to help give the orchard’s trees some muchneeded attention.

Into the Water Lifecycle with WAI Wānaka

Water lovers rejoice. Today is the very rst World Lake Day (27 August), which falls nicely in World Water Week (24 - 28 August).

To create awareness of the impacts on the lakes, freshwater and the water lifecycle as a whole; WAI Wānaka have created a new short lm, with a dedicated webpage on the water lifecycle to follow.

As WAI like to say, “water is life, and when it’s safe and healthy, so are we”. It’s vital we have a stable water cycle, but to be able to play our part, we - as a community - need to understand more about it.
