LOCALS RESTORING URBAN WATERWAYS

It’s no secret communities are growing at a rapid rate. Unsurprisingly, this has a direct effect on the health and wellbeing of freshwater ecosystems; not to mention our own.

The Urban Catchment Project grew from the need to inform the Upper Clutha community about local water issues and how to mitigate them. The aim is to improve the health of urban freshwater in the Upper Clutha, through education and community-led action. Working together towards WAI Wānaka’s vision for healthy ecosystems and community wellbeing for future generations.

Formed through neighbourhood groups, schools, clubs etc. or built around specific environmental or sustainability goals, WAI Wānaka helps facilitate the groups and brings in community collaborators to restore, protect and preserve urban catchments.

Lakeside Road Enhancement Group is one of the established groups. Their vision is a pristine lakefront environment, free of invasive species, enhanced by native plants, and a high level of native biodiversity. They strive for excellent public access and amenities, and clean water flowing into Lake Wānaka. And they are well on their way to achieving this.

With removing invasive species complete, they’re now focused on enhancing biodiversity. Over winter, a large planting site was cleared of invasive weeds and several dead Willow trees were removed. Which has created space for more than 300 native trees and plants to be planted.

This is where you come in. Join the Lakeside Road Enhancement Group, Te Kākano, QLDC and WAI Wānaka for a community planting day this Saturday, 13 September from 10.00am. Walk along the track from the Yacht Club and look for WAI flags. More info at waiwanaka.nz/events

Our council has an important role to play in accelerating the energy transition for the benefit of our community.

A rapid electrification of the district will lower our energy bills, reduce pollution and improve our resilience.

We asked all the local elections candidates where they stand on electrification.

The Wānaka region is full of energy, ideas, and talent. I’m committed to listening, engaging, and working hard to represent our community.

• A council that truly listens. Regular local meetings and genuine collaboration with community groups. Ratepayers deserve to see clearly what their votes, rates, and trust are delivering.

• A council that’s truly accountable. Transparent decisions, open councillor diaries, and improved governance to reduce dysfunction. Strong and collaborative leadership, with performance reviews to create a culture that rewards initiative, challenges stagnation and celebrates results.

• Smarter Infrastructure for the Upper Clutha. Our community is growing rapidly, and our unique infrastructure needs deserve local oversight, with a dedicated Infrastructure Manager based here, not “over the hill.” Let’s plan smart from the start, review projects carefully, and focus on long-term value rather than short-term fixes.

• Harness local expertise. This town is full of incredible talent, so let’s use it. Establish a Project Specific Community Panel: six volunteer experts in finance, law, environment, strategy, HR, and tech, providing non-political guidance on long-term decision-making.

• Projects that matter. Invest in projects that maximise daily community benefit without creating ongoing financial burdens.
