BestStart Pinnacles is buzzing with new energy. Since Centre Manager Mariette joined earlier this year, the centre has introduced fresh ideas and exciting opportunities for tamariki.

Daily excursions now include bike rides, forest walks, playground visits with flu es and active movement in Wānaka’s open spaces. These outings help children connect with nature, explore their backyard and feel proud to be part of their community.

Inside the centre, children enjoy weekly dress-up days and the popular Little Chefs programme, where they get hands-on in the kitchen. Families say their children come home full of stories and excitement, making BestStart Pinnacles a place where children and whānau truly thrive.

Volunteer at the Wanaka A&P Show

Behind every great event are the volunteers who make it happen. At the Wānaka A&P Show, one of those dedicated locals is Gary Pasco.

For the past three years, Gary has been part of the trades team, helping prepare the showgrounds and keeping things running smoothly. “I work with Paul to mark out the grounds before the Show - the wobbly lines are usually mine!” Once exhibitors arrive, Gary helps them nd their sites and sorts out any last-minute issues.

During the Show, he’s a friendly, reliable presence, checking in with vendors and lending a hand wherever needed.

“Sometimes just being visible makes a big di erence,” he says.

While he enjoys the farriers display and the crowd-favourite Jack Russell race, for

Gary the highlight is the people. “I love working with Paul, Maria and the rest of the team - they’re dedicated, skilled and just great people. I also enjoy meeting the trade vendors and chatting with the public. If I can do something small to make someone’s day easier, I’m happy.”

As for funny moments? “There are plenty! They’re part of what makes volunteering so enjoyable and memorable.”

Would he recommend volunteering? “Absolutely. It’s just a short time commitment - but incredibly rewarding.”

A huge thank you to Gary, and to every volunteer who pours their time, energy and heart into making the Wānaka A&P Show the special event it is.

Protecting Native Species with Predator Control in the Makarora Valley

The Department of Conservation (DOC) plans to control rats and stoats via the application of aerially applied cereal baits containing sodium fluoroacetate (1080), in the Makarora area. This operation is scheduled for clear weather windows from 13 October 2025.

Description of the Area

The treatment area is approximately 69,000ha and includes the Makarora, Cameron, Blue, Young, Siberia, and Wilkin Valleys. A detailed map of the application area can be viewed at the DOC Wānaka Visitor Centre or on the Pesticide Summaries website (https://maps.doc.govt.nz/externalmaps/index.html?viewer=pesticidesummary)

Why we are controlling introduced predators

A heavy seeding event, known as a mast, is predicted in many South Island forests this year. This natural event, that should benefit native species, has been hijacked by introduced predators as rodent and stoat numbers skyrocket from the increase in food available. Rodent numbers reach critical levels, and we need to respond with a predator control operation. If we don’t act, rare native species such as mohua, whio, kākā, kakariki, rock wren/pīwauwau, and bats/pekapeka will suffer heavy losses or even local extinction. Through sustained predator control, there is a big increase in breeding success for birds, their food source is more abundant, and the forest is healthier.

Method of Control

Cereal baits will be sown with helicopters at a rate of 1.5kg/ha. Baits are cylindrical, approx. 30mm long and 16mm wide. The operation begins with the distribution of non-toxic pre-feed bait pellets (sandy brown). This prepares rodents and possums to eat the toxic baits which contain 0.15% biodegradable 1080 and are dyed green. Toxic bait will be applied 1-6 weeks after the pre-feed.

1080 is poisonous to humans, domestic and game animals. Risks can be eliminated by following these rules:

• DO NOT TOUCH BAIT

• WATCH CHILDREN AT ALL TIMES

• DO NOT EAT ANIMALS FROM THIS AREA or within the buffer zone outside the treatment boundary. The buffer zone is 2km for deer and pigs, 200m for rabbits, and 1km for hares, tahr, wallabies and possums.

• Poison baits or carcasses are DEADLY TO DOGS.

Observe these rules whenever you see warning signs about pesticides. These signs indicate pesticide residues may still be present in baits and poisoned carcasses. When signs are removed, normal activities can resume. If in doubt, check with your local DOC Office. Please report suspected vandalism or unauthorised removal of signs.

If you suspect poisoning, please contact:

• Your local doctor/hospital/medical centre OR The National Poisons Centre: 0800 764 766 (urgent calls) or 03 479 7248 Or dial 111.

• Seek veterinary advice for suspected poisoning of domestic animals.

Temporary Closure of Areas

During this predator control operation, the Blue Pools Carpark and Track, and the Cameron Flat Campsite will be closed, as well as the immediately surrounding public conservation land. The closure will last four days for the pre-feed application, and four days for the toxic bait application 1-6 weeks later.

Before entering the operation area after 13 October 2025, we recommend you check the DOC website, or contact the Wānaka Visitor Centre for more information on closures.

For further information please contact: Tititea/Mount Aspiring Visitor Centre in Wānaka 0800 ASK DOC or NCPCwanaka@doc.govt.nz
