This year’s Food Resilience Day at the Wao Summit (31 October) comes at the perfect time, following the release of the new Southern Lakes Food Resilience Report.

The report reveals Queenstown Lakes will need at least double, possibly triple, today’s food supply by the mid-2050s, making this day a critical moment to explore solutions together.

Food Resilience Day will dive into the reports findings, with a full day tour, evening kōrero, and practical sessions that connect growers, community organisations, and the wider community. It’s a chance to move from analysis to action, and to help shape a food system that is fair, resilient, and locally grounded. The report, led by Wao Aotearoa and the Southern

FOOD RESILIENCE DAY ARRIVES

Lakes Kai Collective (SLKC), sets out the scale of the challenge. In 2023, the district consumed 34,748 tonnes of food, with 95% trucked or flown in. By 2050, demand will rise to 63,000 – 95,000 tonnes a year. Reliance on just six supermarkets, carrying less than a week of stock, leaves the community exposed to crises, while avoidable waste remains high. One-third of kerbside bins contained food waste, totalling 122 tonnes weekly.

The SLKC has developed a roadmap that focuses on strengthening education, supporting local growers, and driving policy change. Together, these create the foundation for a food-secure, resilient future.

Food Resilience Day (31 October) at the Wao Summit is your opportunity to explore this roadmap, connect with changemakers, and be part of securing our food future. Read the Report and get tickets to Wao Summit Food Resilience Day at wao.co.nz.

LIGHTING DIRECT

Queenstown’s New Lighting Destination

Lighting Direct has opened its doors at Remarkables Park Town Centre, bringing Queenstown over 1,500 lighting designs that balance style with performance. From dramatic stairwell features to sculptural chandeliers and elegant pendants, the new showroom is designed to inspire.

Among the highlights are travertine fittings, carved from solid stone so each piece is unique, as well as Spanish alabaster, whose natural veining comes alive under modern LED technology.

“People are looking for authenticity in their homes,” says Dean Fulford, CEO of Lighting Direct. “Materials like travertine are raw, natural, and timeless. Because each piece is carved from stone, no two are ever the same, it gives customers something truly individual and lasting.”

For those seeking expert guidance, the store also offers a bespoke lighting design service. Within seven working days, customers can receive a tailored plan that ensures the right combination of beauty, function, and practicality.

Long Covid: The Ongoing Consequences of Covid19

The Wanaka Branch of the Royal Society brings leading thinkers, highly regarded in their eld of knowledge and expertise, to talk about their work. Each year ten eminent national speakers are included in the programme.

The 800 million cases of Covid19 worldwide are estimated to have led to 100 million cases of an ongoing chronic post-viral condition, Long Covid. This is expected to impose an immense burden on our health systems and social services. Previously, post viral syndromes (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome ME/CFS) have received little scienti c attention, but have proved to be lifelong illnesses for the vast majority a ected.

Our speaker, Professor Warren Tate (Otago University), in his early studies showed that both Long Covid and ME/CFS patients have very similar pathophysiology and altered biochemical pathways.

His team has found NZ patients have a strong familial genetic susceptibility and they are exploring whether they can develop a risk signature for families. Evidence of both risk and early diagnosis may give people a chance of avoiding post-viral conditions, but also recovering before these become entrenched as lifelong disease.

Wanaka Skate Club Rolls into 30 Years

On Friday, 3 October the Wanaka Skate Club will be celebrating three decades of community, progression and inclusion with its 30 year celebration planned at Rhyme X Reason Brewery.

What began as a small wooden half pipe and rail on private land situated where the mall now sits, slowly grew to the world class skate park located in the centre of town.

None of this would have been possible without the love and dedication of the club members who volunteered their time to further the club.

The club's positive in uence extends beyond the Wanaka Skate Club, with over $10,000 raised for various charities, organisations and families in need to

give back to the community.

DEADLINES

Line ads – 9.00am Tuesdays

“This milestone is not just about skating; it’s about the heart of our community,” said Olly Burke, club spokesperson.

We encourage anyone who has photos of themselves or the history of the club to come along and pin them up on the story boards, to help piece together three decades of Wanaka’s skateboard history.

There will be some stories accompanied by live music. It’s sure to be a great evening, so if you have ever been involved with skateboarding in Wanaka, please come along.

Please go to the Wanaka Skateboard Club Facebook page, or Instagram for more information.
