With preparations for the commemoration of the 2019 ANZAC day well under way, it has been announced that the Wanaka ANZAC services will be complimented by the attendance of the New Zealand Veterans Brass Band, who have chosen to visit the area to take part in the commemorations and perform a series of concerts in the Central Otago area.

The band, made up of retired regular and territorial NZ Defence force musicians from throughout NZ and Australia, is assembling in Wanaka prior to Anzac Day. “We are like one big family, as many of the players have served together in deployments overseas and coming together every two years to reaffirm friendships and to make music is just something special”, says Mr Leslie.

Although the band is of traditional brass band formation, their repertoire features a wide range of

music genres ranging from ceremonial fanfares, marches, vocal numbers, World War I favourites, Glenn Miller numbers, classics and light pop.

Within the band’s complement are a number of ex members of the NZ National Band, along with some very talented soloists who have won NZ Championships and will also feature during the concerts.

While in Central Otago, the band will participate in the Wanaka Dawn and Civic Services. Later on Anzac Day, they will perform at the Wanaka Aspiring Lifestyle Village. On Friday 26 April at 1.30pm, they will play in the Wanaka town centre before travelling to Alexandra to perform at the Alexandra RSA at 5.30pm. On Saturday, a concert in Queenstown by the steamer terminal at 10.30am will complete the formal program before a final dinner on Saturday night.

Locals vendors along with vendors from out of town gather every Thursday afternoon to display and sell their wares, including locally grown produce and a great selection of crafts.

All of the products on offer at the market are lovingly grown or crafted by the vendors themselves, making

for a true experience of the creative talent on offer in our beautiful region.

Is it difficult to manage bedtimes, school drop offs or other transitions or new situations? Do you feel like you avoid saying or doing certain things in case your child gets upset? Then this training is for you!

Our ‘CALM Minds’ 4-week parenting programme is there to help and support you. It is aimed at parents struggling with child anxiety, anger or behaviour problems.

The aim is to help parents feel more confident with managing their children and to gain more knowledge

around understanding their child’s feelings and behaviour/symptoms.

Meg Bryant, a child and family therapist, will facilitate the programme and says, “I have noticed a huge increase in parents coming in for help with their children’s anxiety. Nationwide, there is an increase in childhood anxiety and mood disorders. As a family therapist, I am a strong advocate of working with parents in solving family problems rather than treating individual children in isolation from their families. We treat the whole system. This approach is supported by recent research which shows that teaching parents how to help their children is the best way to treat childhood anxiety. I believe parents benefit from the group programme approach which also supports their connection to others. Shared experiences help us all

feel less isolated in our struggles.”

Content of the course will include: understanding what anxiety and stress looks like in a child; skills and strategies in how to help yourself and your child regain calmness in the face of stress or anxiety responses; resources available to support you and your child; and understanding the brain and body connection.

CALM Minds is for parents or caregivers of 5 – 12 year olds. Starting Wednesday 8 May and running for four weeks on a Wednesday evening (from 6.00 – 8.00 pm, supper included) at the Wanaka Yacht Club. The cost is $80 and the programme will be limited to 15 parents.

Bookings are open for Wanaka Recreation Centre’s Easter school holiday programme.

Running Monday 15 April to Thursday 18 April (the four days before Good Friday), the Queenstown Lakes District Council-managed programme features different sports, games and an all-abilities swim every day for children aged between 5 and 12.

Penny Batchelor, recreation programmes coordinator at the Rec Centre, says spaces are filling fast.

“The word has certainly spread after we ran the first ever holiday programme here in January. Parents are telling us they like the sporty nature of the activities and that they think it offers good value,” she says.

Each day costs $40 per child except Wednesday 17 April where an additional $10 covers an excursion to Basecamp Adventures for indoor climbing.

Other activities across the four days include a rogaine, sack races and ‘flippa-ball’ – a modified version of water polo developed specially for kids and played in shallow water.

Winter is definitely snapping at our heels now. We have had a couple of mild frosts, the leaves are changing colour, the stags are roaring and the clocks have gone back.

Time to check your vehicles are also prepared for the cold. Check the anti-freeze, window wiper blades, dig out that ice scraper and make sure your tyres have plenty of tread on them. You may even like to consider getting some winter tyres. In the mornings, if your windows are frozen please don’t pull out of the drive until the windows have plenty of visibility.

This week, police attended several family harm incidents, one Police Safety Order was issued to give everyone time to relax and reflect.

A motor cyclist was lucky to walk away from a crash on the Crown Range when he misjudged a corner, crossed the centre line and struck a vehicle coming in the opposite direction. If he had been a split second earlier, emergency services would probably have been attending another fatality.

Some tourists were also lucky to escape injury after their vehicle rolled on Wanaka-Mt Aspiring Road. They had pulled too far to the left to make way for an oncoming camper van.

A vehicle struck a red deer stag whilst driving on the MakaroraLake Hawea Road just south of the Lake Hawea look out on Saturday evening. The driver had already bagged himself a stag whilst hunting on the West Coast and was not keen on having another come through his windscreen. This time of year sees extra wildlife around so keep alert when driving out of town. We also urge farmers to check the condition of their fences to prevent any stock getting out.

Wanaka had extra police in town over the weekend checking for intoxicated drivers. Six were apprehended on Friday night with four of those charged and heading off to court. Saturday was a little better with one driver being caught, but one is still one too many. Wanaka is a popular place for many different activities and drink driving seems to be one of them. Everyone has a responsibility to prevent this so please make sure your family, friends, work colleagues and team mates have a safe way to get home after having a few drinks.

Lastly, we have received complaints of cyclists riding on the footpath and not giving way to pedestrians. One incident last week involved an elderly male who was knocked over by a cyclist who sent a barrage of abuse at the male before riding away. Please remember if you are riding on a shared pedestrian/cycle way you should give way to people on foot and pass safely or move to the road when it is a footpath.
