COMMUNITY NEWS Search efforts continue for teen last seen Jan. 21 in Paris Police say they are 'determined to exhaust all avenues' to locate Michael

By Chris Whelan Our Community Awaits Answers as Search Continues for Missing Teen Concerned community members in Paris are anxiously seeking updates from the local police regarding the whereabouts of a teenager who was reported missing on the evening of January 21.

Constable Jonathan Bueckert of the OPP stated, "Despite comprehensive investigative efforts and community outreach, Michael's location has not yet been determined," in an interview with the media on Thursday.

Nevertheless, Bueckert assured the public that law enforcement is actively pursuing various investigative leads to locate the 15-year-old. The teenager, identified only as Michael, was last seen around 9 p.m. on Vic Chambers Place, wearing shorts and a T-shirt, according to police reports. The street is located off Rest Acres Road in Paris, near the Brant Sports Complex.

Over the past few days, distressed locals including friends of Michaels have taken to Facebook, volunteering to participate in search parties, while also expressing concerns about undisclosed information known to the police.

Bueckert clarified, "At this time, there is no information indicating that Michael is not alive." He further emphasized that the police are determined to explore all possible avenues to locate him.

To aid in the investigation, community members are encouraged to share posts across various social media platforms, according to Bueckert. If anyone spots Michael or has information about his whereabouts, they are urged to contact the OPP County of Brant Detachment at 1-888-310-1122.

Michael is described as a Black male, approximately five-foot-eight in height, wearing black shorts, running shoes, and a red and orange striped T-shirt.

Paris Welcomes Hibah Maryam Sohawon, The First Paris Baby of the New Year!

By Casandra Turnbull Paris, ON - The town of Paris celebrates the safe arrival of its newest resident, Hibah Maryam Sohawon, who entered this world on January 4th at 3 pm. Hibah's birth was made possible with the assistance of the Midwives of Brant and the dedicated staff at Brantford General Hospital, ensuring a smooth and secure delivery for both mother and baby.

Hibah is the first child for proud parents Noorshabah JoomunSohawon and Sheik Sohawon, and the young family is happily settling into their home in Paris following the joyful arrival of their baby girl.

Leading up to the birth, Noorshabah experienced some minor contractions on January 2nd, indicating that the arrival of their little one was imminent. At 3 am on January 4th, she was admitted to the hospital, and 12 hours later, Hibah made her grand entrance, weighing a healthy 5.9 pounds.

Reflecting on the journey of pregnancy, Noorshabah and Sheik described the moment they discovered their family was about to expand. "Discovering my pregnancy was a miraculous moment, filling my world with

Indescribable joy. Although the initial expectation was a midJanuary arrival, a mother's instinct whispered that our baby might grace us with her presence before the date," shared Noorshabah in an email interview with The Paris Independent.

Throughout the months leading up to the birth, the expectant parents diligently prepared for their baby's arrival. Noorshabah took time off work and immersed herself in various tasks to ensure they were fully ready for their bundle of joy.

The nursery room was transformed into a dream haven, baby gear was meticulously organized, tiny outfits were lovingly washed and ironed, and the hospital bag sat patiently packed—a tangible symbol of their excitement and readiness for the new chapter ahead.

While they kept the baby's gender a surprise, Noorshabah and Sheik had several names selected in advance. When their little girl finally arrived, they settled on the enchanting name 'Hibah Maryam.'

Hibah signifies a gift of God or blessings, while Maryam means beloved.

Hibah is truly beloved, receiving abundant love and attention from her doting parents as they adapt to their new routine at home.

Additionally, her grandparents traveled an impressive 15,270 km to be with the family for this joyous occasion, further adding to the joy and happiness surrounding Hibah's arrival.

Noorshabah expressed her gratitude for having her parents by their side during this momentous time in their lives. "We are cherishing every precious moment with our little one, and it brings immense joy during these initial weeks."

The Sohawon family relocated to Paris in January 2022 when they purchased their first home. Since settling in the town, they have cherished their time here, particularly in their peaceful and welcoming neighborhood.

Noorshabah expressed, "Paris, with its vibrant culture and serene surroundings, has proven to be an ideal place for starting and nurturing a family."

The town of Paris warmly welcomes Hibah Maryam and extends heartfelt congratulations to the Sohawon family on the safe and joyous arrival of their precious gift from above.

COMMUNITY NEWS County of Brant Seeks Feedback on Proposed Zoning By-law Changes Submitted Release The County of Brant is currently seeking feedback from residents on proposed changes to the Zoning By-law. Section 34 of the Planning Act allows municipalities to create Zoning By-laws, and the County of Brant has its own by-law (ByLaw 61-16) that aligns with the Official Plan and provincial policies. The purpose of making technical and housekeeping changes to the Zoning By-law is to improve its relevance and address small issues.

Regular updates to the Zoning Bylaw ensure that it remains responsive to the evolving needs of the County. The staff continuously monitor changes that may be required and consider them for future housekeeping projects.

Additionally, they are working on developing a new by-law to align with the County's new Official Plan once it is approved.

The County of Brant invites residents to participate in this update process by providing

COMMUNITY NEWS Ontario Supporting Municipalities Facing Challenges with Abandoned Oil and Gas Wells

Will Bouma MPP Brant – The Ontario government is investing $105,000 to help protect the County of Brant from the challenges associated with old and inactive oil and gas wells. The funding will be used to purchase gas monitoring and health and safety equipment, and provide health and safety training to staff.

“I am happy to be a part of a Government that prioritizes the health and safety of our communities”, said Brantford-Brant MPP Will Bouma.

“The equipment and training that this funding will secure can go a long way to alleviate concerns that some legacy wells may have created in and around the County of Brant”.

Ontario is investing $7.5 million over three years to help municipalities in their efforts to reduce risks associated with old oil and gas wells and enhance emergency preparedness within their communities. This funding is part of a $23.6 million investment the government is making to manage the risks posed by old oil and gas wells and subsurface gas migration hazards to help keep people and communities safe.

COMMUNITY NEWS Families Invited to Celebrate Family Literacy Day at County of Brant Public Library Submitted Release Paris, ON - Families in the County of Brant are invited to immerse themselves in the joy of storytelling and celebrate Family Literacy Day at the local public library. The event aims to combine knowledge and fun through literacy-focused activities, emphasizing the importance of family bonding through books, imagination, and free play. This exciting day promises to be an educational and memorable experience for both young minds and the young at heart.

Local Community Comes Together to Help Those in Need Submitted Release In a heartwarming display of compassion, Lesley Falhazi, along with the support of 2RIVERS and its staff, is spearheading an initiative to assist individuals facing hardships. Recognizing the urgent needs within the community, they are reaching out to the public for donations of essential items such as blankets, warm clothing, food, time, and monetary contributions.

To make a contribution, interested individuals are encouraged to drop off donations at 2RIVERS on Monday and Thursday at 4 PM. If you plan to visit 2RIVERS, kindly send a private message to coordinate the best time for your visit. Alternatively, donations can also be left in a bag on the porch at 45 Magnolia Drive in Paris.

Lesley, who witnessed the pressing needs firsthand during a recent outing, has committed to continue her efforts in supporting the community. In two weeks' time, she will be venturing out again to provide assistance. Among the crucial items she is seeking are boots, snow pants, tarps, tents, blankets, backpacks, warm clothes, feminine hygiene products, food, and water. Lesley is even willing to pick up donated items, so individuals are encouraged to reach out via message if they cannot make it to the drop-off location.

The act of giving back and showing kindness can make an immeasurable difference in the lives of those experiencing hardship. Brantford's Brewing Scene Gets a Facelift as Sassy Britches Brewing Steps into Mash Paddle's Shoes.

Change is brewing in the heart of Brantford's Cordage District as Mash Paddle Brewing, a beloved local craft brewery, undergoes a transformative journey, emerging as Sassy Britches Brewing Co. This evolution comes as Teddy, owner of Mash Paddle Brewing, sells off the brewery and finds new ownership which is bringing a fresh perspective, revamped branding, and an exciting array of beer styles while retaining the familiar faces of its dedicated brewer and staff.

We wish Teddy well as his tough decision to sell was based on wanting to spend more time with family and improve his life work balance. Something a lot of business owners can relate too after the long days and nights involved in opening up a business.

Sassy Britches is looking to maintain the spirit of camaraderie with a side of beer that Mash Paddle has created.

Tracey Shaw is one of the new owners of Sassy Britches and walking proudly beside her is Shawn Norris. Tracey is proudly pictured in their new logo. You may recognize her from previously managing Bell City Brewing and also working at

Manns Distillery.

She is no stranger to the food and beverage industry and with spending a lot of time travelling she has also seen a pub or two and I bet she will bring some of that atmosphere to Sassy Britches.

With the location, brewer, and staff remaining the same the decision to rebrand and introduce a new look reflects a commitment to innovation and adaptability in an ever-evolving craft beer landscape. Sassy Britches aims to captivate both seasoned craft beer enthusiasts and newcomers alike with a refreshed visual identity and diverse range of beer styles they plan to introduce.

Taprooms often become social hubs where locals gather to share stories, enjoy live music, and experience the unique flavours that define their community. Starting in 1834, long before the coming of the automobile, the physicians of Paris were known as “country doctors” because they spent a large part of their time riding through the countryside on or behind a horse. The earliest doctors, such as McCosh, Cooke, Dickson, and Clarke, usually rode on horse-back as they only had time to answer the door, saddle up and go! The later doctors from around 1910 onward, such as Burt and Sinclair, would be summoned by telephone and usually rode in buggies, cutters and sleighs on rough country roads full of rocks, ruts and quagmires.

Dr. Robert McCosh was the very first physician to practice in Paris.

Upon Graduating from the University of Edinburgh in 1831, he came to Upper Canada (Ontario), and in 1834, settled here. He was bluff, plain-spoken, kind-hearted specimen of the old time Scottish doctor, and his practice extended to a radius of many miles in the adjacent townships. Beginning in 1850, he was also the editor of the Paris Star newspaper for 2 or 3 years.

Dr. Silas W. Cooke was born in Hadley, Massachusetts in 1817. He got his diploma in New York before coming to Paris, to practice medicine.

He obtained his provincial license to practice medicine in Ontario in 1843.

His brother moved to Canada at the same time and had a medical practice in Norwich, Ontario. Dr. Cooke died on April 28, 1884, at his home in Paris. His only son, John, was a doctor in the state of New York.

Besides being a practicing physician, he was also president of the Ontario Medical Association, chairman of the Paris Board of Education, and president of the Paris Children’s Aid Dr. James W. R. Dickson born in Society for several years. William England on July 3, 1815. He Burt died on March 14, 1919, in emigrated to Brant County with his Paris. family in 1837. He had taken a course in medicine in Edinburgh and Dr. Archibald James Sinclair was obtained his diploma the year before born near St. Thomas in Elgin he came to Canada. Dr. Dickson County, Ontario and received his stayed in Woodstock until 1848 when medical degree from Trinity College he moved to Paris, where he in 1875. He had taught school for practiced medicine for more than several years before studying thirty years. James Dickson died on medicine in Dr. McLarty’s office in December 29, 1890, in Paris.

The Paris Armoury

The 1918 Spanish Flu Epidemic Veterans of the Great War who served overseas unknowingly brought the flu back with them. The Paris Armoury was converted into an emergency hospital financed by Paris industrialist John Penman. Upon arrival, patients exchanged their clothing and possessions for sterile garments. Staff and volunteers did the same. Many ill patients were treated here were only three deaths were recorded.

In 1881, the Town of Paris built King’s Ward Elementary School at 3 Broadway E., behind the First Baptist Church beside King’s Ward park, so named after Hiram “King” Capron the town’s founder. By 1910, King’s Ward School was closed and put up for sale. Students of King’s Ward would now attend the new Paris Central Public School directly

behind King’s Ward, facing Grand River St. North. On May 30, 1910, Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier allowed the purchase of King’s Ward School to become an armoury with “B” Squadron of the 25th Dragoons in Paris to occupy the building. Renovations began with military orders to prepare plans for improvements. When the contractors began work on the

former classroom floors, they discovered that the hobnailed boots of restless children had worn deep grooves in the thick plank floorboards. This flooring was replaced. The present Paris Central Public School is now on this site of the old King’s Ward School/Armoury.

S P O RT S Silver medals for U11 Wolfpack at St. George Tournament The U11 LL Team 2 sponsored by Kings Wood Products travelled down the road to county rivals St. George to compete in The Earl Gaukel Memorial Tournament January 20-21. Paris faced off against Burford in the Championship game. Mayor David Bailey dropped the ceremonial puck. It was a hard fought battle that went into overtime. Despite Paris’ best efforts, Burford ended up with the 2-1 win.

Paris brought home Silver medals after an excellent weekend of teamwork and play.

S P O RT S U9 Team 2 wins Consolation Championship Game at Delhi Hockey Moms Tournament; comes home with 4-1 record

By Casandra Turnbull Tournaments have a way of solidifying teams and strengthening player bonds and last weekend’s trip to Delhi was no exception for the Paris Wolfpack U9 Team 2.

Geared up and ready for their first tournament of the season, the local house league team competed in the Delhi Hockey Moms tournament and showed competitors the strength of their bench by blowing through the round robin games undefeated. With every win came a new sense of confidence for these young boys and girls and their momentum was contagious in the stands as well.

The action started with a 9-2 win over Alymer in game 1 Friday night. Simcoe proved to be a little more difficult, but Paris squeaked by with a 6-5 win early Saturday morning. In game 3, Paris dominated play once again with 9-1 victory over Lambton Shores, securing their seat in the semi-final game on Sunday.

Faced against an equally talented Wainfleet squad on Sunday, the game was tied 4-4 into the final minute of play. Unfortunately, Wainfleet scored two quick unanswered goals to advance to the finals. It was Paris’ only loss of the tournament and they were down, but not out. The team regrouped, put on their game faces and skated

back onto the ice (with only a 15minute break between games) to claim the bronze medal and the consolation championship game, outplaying Simcoe in a dominate 51 victory.

Lucas Wilkinson, Levi Blake and Jace Allgood finished among the top 10 goal scorers in this 11 team tournament.

Lucas led the Wolfpack with 16 goals and four assists, Levi netted 6 goals and 6 assists, and Jace racked up five goals and five assists.

Ben Turnbull stood strong between the pipes with a stellar goals against average of just 3.00 over five games – an impressive start to his first few games in net. Sloane Gal and Henry Bartscher both celebrated their first goals of the season.

What makes this team remarkable was not how they celebrated the big wins but how they celebrated the little victories as well. When Sloane and Henry put the puck in the net first the first time, the entire team came to life on the bench, celebrating the moments with sheer excitement. The coach’s bench, consisting of Levi Blake, Ed Allgood, Mike Wilkinson, Jeff Bartscher and Mike Mendoza, were blown away by the collective effort, resilience and sportsmanship of everyone throughout the weekend.

“The kids all demonstrated

exceptional teamwork and battled until the final whistle in every game. Their commitment did not go unnoticed, and all the coaches are incredibly proud and lucky to have such a dedicated group of players,” said Coach Blake.

A special thank-you also goes out to the team’s sponsors, who graciously stepped up to help cover tournament fees, but also provide some pretty awesome swag for the team to show up to games and tournaments in style! S P O RT S U9 Team 1 wins B Division Championship at Embro Tournament The Wolfpack U9 Local League Team #1 participated in the Embro Tournament last weekend, bringing home the B Division bragging rights. They edged out tournament hosts Embro 5-4 in game one but faced a tougher Burford team in game 2, losing 10-3. Their one and one record put them into the B Division Championship game where they easily beat Twin Centre 7-3. “The team really came ready to play and grew as a team as the day went on to claim the B Championship,” said coach Daryl Aitchison. Team members include Nathan Blake, Sebastian Britton, Jarome Burke, Emma Connolly, Landon Dedman, Jack Ferren, Keon Gall, Silas Norden, Lincoln Pynenburg, Hayden White and Hunter White. A special thank-you goes out to team sponsors Morley’s Contracting and Brantford Landscaping and Sodding for helping the team compete in this fun-filled tournament.

The Paris Titans are buzzing with excitement as they announced their new team captain, James Patterson. His exceptional skills, unwavering dedication, and strong leadership qualities have earned him this prestigious role.
