What to do about an Auditory Processing Disorder Last time I wrote about the areas that a child with APD may find challenging. If you suspect that your child may have difficulties in this area, it would good to speak to their teachers to determine the extent of the problem and the effect it is having on your child’s learning. A formal diagnosis of APD can only be made by an Audiologist after extensive testing. If you have any concerns please feel free to call me, as I cannot elaborate on the process in the space available here. There are however some things that you could try that will benefit most children; not only those with APD. • Use the child’s name to gain their attention and then give an instruction; • Keep instructions short and simple. Have the child repeat a set of instructions back to you before you enact them; • Slow your own rate of speech down somewhat, as people with APD say that they hear speech at an accelerated speed with distortions; • Try to eliminate background noise at times when it is important for the child to listen and absorb information; • For a complex task or during the school day, write a list of tasks down for the child to refer to when they are unsure of what to do next; and • Adults with APD report feeling very tired after a noisy day.
