Is your brain feeling the strain?
Your brain is an organ that can become overloaded like any other. Pressures from work, lifestyle, eating habits, stress and environmental influences all affect brain health. Toxins can build up in the brain; just as in any other part of your body. Keeping your alcohol consumption in check is also key, since alcohol kills brain cells. Let’s face it, without a fully functioning brain, you can be in a bit of strife – yet many of us don’t take good care of our personal on-board computer.
No matter what your gender, age or circumstances, it is important to preserve and enhance your grey matter – and there are lots of things you can do to improve your memory and mental performance. Just as the body needs fuel, so does the brain. You probably already know that a diet based on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and oils and lean protein will provide lots of health benefits, but such a diet can also improve memory.

Oil the cogs. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish, flaxseed, coconut, olive and hemp oils, plus nuts and seeds, are particularly beneficial for brain health.
Eat more fruit and vegetables. Colourful fruits and vegetables are particularly good antioxidant ‘superfood’ sources that protect your brain cells from damage.

Drink green tea. Green tea contains polyphenols; powerful antioxidants that protect against free radicals that can damage brain cells and may even enhance memory and mental alertness and can also slow brain-ageing.
Drink pure, clean water. Water gives the brain the electrical energy for all brain functions, including thought and memory processes. Studies have shown that if you are only 1 percent dehydrated, you will likely have a 5 percent decrease in cognitive function.
Supplements worthy of mention: Omega-3 DHA, Gingko, Resveratrol, Turmeric, Huperzine, Vitamins D; E; B12, Ginseng, Phosphatidylserine, also combination supplements for brain and memory enhancement.
