Waiheke Island
Although Waiheke is known by many as the land of the vineyards, vino and olives, there is so much more to the island. It has become and will continue to be a large tourist destination. Waiheke has a little micro-climate; as soon as one gets off the ferry in Summer, the sound of cicadas is quite deafening.
A unique blend of people exists here, from all over the world. It is unlike any other place on earth as far as mixture of people goes. Usually, a small place with such a small population of 8000-plus would be concentrated on an industry such as farming, mining or forestry – or perhaps retired people, to name but a few. However, Waiheke Island is really in a world of its own. There is a wide range of people from all walks of life and interests; bohemian and professional. With movie, TV and singing stars coming in their helicopters to have lunch, take a dip, go for a fish or just chill out, this is starting to be known throughout the world. Waiheke has featured in many well-known publications throughout the globe for its charm, friendly people, fishing, food, wine and olives; as well as the number of festivals they have each year. They also have one of the biggest wedding numbers here on island – with around 650 couples per annum tying the knot.
When you mention Waiheke you will see the smile cross people’s faces and before you have a chance to talk they will start telling you a story about their time on Waiheke and how they love the place. Just a 35 minutes ferry ride from downtown is the ultimate island retreat. Despite being so close to the CBD you’ll feel another world away.
House sales on Waiheke have been very good and Mike Pero Real Estate has seen a steady increase of sales, particularly in the lower end. Gone are the days when you can buy a 2-bedroom bach on island for, say, $450k; and that was not that long ago. As a result, those who have discovered that the island was quite affordable have done a great job by moving or investing there while it was still a long way behind Auckland; those of you who are still thinking about it – it is not too late!
