“The Version Of Us” by Laura Barnett
Diana Lakin’s November review brings us an astonishingly brilliant debut novel.
I love crossword puzzles and this novel really tests your powers of observation… Not for the faint hearted, as the tome gives you three versions/scenarios of one occurrence.
I LOVED it... but it wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea, however. It is somewhat difficult to give a review of this book but, just to whet your appetite; here is the gist of the story. Eva and Jim are nineteen and students at Cambridge when their paths first cross in 1958. Jim is walking along a lane when a woman approaching him on a bike swerves to avoid a dog. What happens next will determine the rest of their lives. I loved the intricacies of the story and it kept me intrigued and alert the whole way through.
Happy reading!

Millwater ROWENAs
On September 24th, the Millwater ROWENAs (Retired Old Women Enjoying Nice Afternoons) had their first lunch outing at our first planned venue, which was The Wade Hotel in Silverdale. Currently, we have a group of 12 ladies and 10 of these went for lunch. A table was booked in the conservatory, where we met at 12 noon for lunch at 12.30.
Nine of the ladies chose the special lunch menu at a very reasonable cost of just $12.50; I had the Warm Thai Beef Salad, which was very good indeed. Everyone enjoyed their lunch and all were well satisfied with their choices of food and drinks.
The conversation flowed easily and the topics were varied as we got to know everyone. Some of the ladies already knew one another but obviously we didn’t know everybody. By about 2.00 p.m. we had finished lunch, had coffee and decided it was time to give our tongues a rest.
We will be meeting for lunch on the last Thursday of each month, and it will be a case that whoever is free on the day will attend the lunch. The second lunch was at the Puhoi Cheese Factory on 29th October and the November meeting will be at Walnut Cottage, Orewa, on 26th November. If anyone else would like to join us, please make contact via the magazine’s email address.
