“Feather and Fin” - Giving Nature a VOICE conservation series

Our beautiful natural environment is the focus of Estuary Arts Centre’s October/November exhibition programme, which coincides with Conservation Awareness week. Estuary Arts has teamed up with Hibiscus Coast Forest and Bird, to develop a comprehensive programme of exhibitions and educational displays, together with guided walks and specialist environmental talks by experts.

The gallery will showcase a range of local artists, whose artwork features New Zealand native birds, fish and the environment and has a strong focus on our Hibiscus Coastal area. The exhibition runs from 29 October to 22 November. Artists include Virginia and Stuart Angus, who work in stoneware ceramics and Stuart forges large wading birds, wetas and fish from recycled copper. Tiina Power’s paintings show native birds, expertly painted in exquisite detail amongst blossoming Kowhai. Susanah Law’s young students will have a selection of their ceramic and mixed-media work alongside these artists, with work inspired by our local flora and fauna.

The programme of guided walks and talks can be obtained from your local library, the Arts Centre and online at www. estuaryarts.org. Keynote speakers include Martin Sanders, who will give a talk on Tiritiri Matangi on Tuesday 3 November from 7.30 – 8.30pm.

If you are more of an active learner, then join one of the guided walks that will take place each Sunday at 10.30am; Philip Wrigley will guide you around the Alice Eaves Scenic reserve; while Richard Chambers will introduce you to the abundant and flourishing birdlife at Shakespear Regional Park. Take a leisurely walk around the Estuary Walkway with Karen Baird, a sea-bird conservation advocate. All of the guided walks and talks are donation only, but booking is essential; so phone the centre on 09 426 5570 or email your booking to admin@estuaryarts.org.
