What to do about an Auditory Processing Disorder

Last time I wrote about the areas that a child with APD may find challenging. If you suspect that your child may have difficulties in this area, it would good to speak to their teachers to determine the extent of the problem and the effect it is having on your child’s learning. A formal diagnosis of APD can only be made by an Audiologist after extensive testing. If you have any concerns please feel free to call me, as I cannot elaborate on the process in the space available here.

There are however some things that you could try that will benefit most children; not only those with APD. • Use the child’s name to gain their attention and then give an instruction; • Keep instructions short and simple. Have the child repeat a set of instructions back to you before you enact them; • Slow your own rate of speech down somewhat, as people with APD say that they hear speech at an accelerated speed with distortions; • Try to eliminate background noise at times when it is important for the child to listen and absorb information; • For a complex task or during the school day, write a list of tasks down for the child to refer to when they are unsure of what to do next; and • Adults with APD report feeling very tired after a noisy day. Allow your child some quiet time after school to recover. Listening to baroque music can be beneficial to aid relaxation.

Introducing Celi Fonseca and Fashion Brazil

This month, recent Millwater resident Celi Fonseca introduces herself and her new business to our readers.

Celi was born in São Paulo, Brazil but spent all her teenage years in Ipanema Beach, Rio de Janeiro

One of her passions is Latin dancing and the other is fitness gear: she began dancing when she was 9 years old, in Brazil, later becoming a dance instructor and participating in many stage and television shows.

In 1991, Celi moved to New Zealand to live with her older sister and she graduated from Auckland Girls’ Grammar. With her NZ dance partner, they were the first South American dancers in Auckland. Celi had her own Latin Dance company in Auckland and has travelled with shows all over NZ.

She left NZ in 1998 for Dubai, where she taught Latin Dance and Performing with her NZ dance partner Paul Te Whata.

In 2002, Celi moved to Bahrain where she founded SalsaBahrain.com, a Latin Dance School and Entertainment provider. She spent several years in Bahrain, where she taught classes – from Salsa to Latin Fitness and organised many Latin events.

Celi then moved to Sydney, where she worked for 6 years with her sister at Fashion Brazil in sales, administration and marketing.

In June 2014, Celi returned to NZ for a better quality of life for herself and her 2 children. They chose Millwater as all the good schools are nearby and also for the family environment. Having Orewa beach nearby is a bonus, as it reminds Celi very much of the city she was born in on the coast of São Paulo. Celi established Fashion Brazil and began trading from home in December 2014; her small business specialising in importing high quality Activewear from Brazilian Sportswear giants Rola Moca, Caju Brasil and Oxyfit and bringing all the vibrancy and colours of Brazil to New Zealand.

Most of her designs are very colourful and it will for sure make you stand out from the crowd – and Celi had no idea what the response of the NZ public was going to be, as everyone she saw at the gym wore mainly black tights. One day Celi put a post on the Facebook page, looking for people to help her get her clothing lines out there and that is how she met Brad Barron from Peak Pilates in Millwater; showing her gear to his lovely wife Karen and the staff at Peak and they began to work together.

Today, both studios in Millwater and Red Beach sell her Activewear line and every few months they hold a VIP event at the studio in Red Beach, which their entertainment guru Brad calls their “Very Important Pants event”. Celi is also a certified Group Fitness Instructor from Tafe Randwick Syndey and also hold 4 Zumba instructor’s licences; currently teaching Zumba at Orewa Community Centre.

She is also a certified assistant nurse from Tafe Ultimo Sydney and currently works in the Hibiscus Coast community as a carer.

Peak Pilates Saint Heliers and Viva Dance Studios in the City will also be stocking Fashion Brazil and Celi is looking for more businesses around Auckland who would be keen to sell on her behalf. She can be contacted via Facebook or through theMillwatermag.
