are you ready?
You might have noticed a dedicated group of local volunteers quietly working behind the scenes to get Arrowtown ready for potential emergencies, mainly the anticipated AF8 earthquake. Thanks to generous support from Community Trust South, Central Lakes Trust, Hugo Charitable Trust, NZ Lottery Grants Board, QLDC, Mitre10 and the Arrowtown Village Association, we are making significant progress. Our main goal is to be able to set up a communication hub quickly at the Arrowtown Community Centre (Rugby Clubrooms) which is Arrowtown’s official meeting point. Recently we completed our first area-wide radio check which was a success, and have just this month set up Starlink

red heavens
Arts on Tour and Creative Queenstown have brought Red Heavens to Arrowtown on Tuesday 23rd July at 7–9 pm at the Athenaeum Hall.
‘Red Heavens’ portrays the true story of Angelina Moleta, an Italian pioneering immigrant on D'Urville Island, whose fate is intertwined with the forces of nature and her deep connection with a high-born Māori woman.
Grown up on the active volcanic island of Stromboli, Angelina is betrothed to her cousin at an early age who, in 1906, brings her as a 16-year-old to the even more remote D'Urville Island, in the Marlborough Sounds. Through hardship and an unlikely friendship, she grows into womanhood and motherhood. This bitter and beautiful tale is inspired by the bestselling book ‘Angelina’ by New Zealand author Gerard Hindmarsh, who wrote this book about his grandmother. Tickets are $25 from www. humanitix.com/red-heavens

The Year 8 team won, and the Year 7 team placed second. Top placings for all Arrowtown School teams! A big thanks to all the coaches and parents, as well as Paul Winders and Stacey Anderson, who assisted on the day.
winterstellar 2024
Inspired by dark sky photography, Andy Davey coordinated a group of photographers to create the ‘Winterstellar’ exhibitions. As CEO of the Winterstellar Charitable Trust, Andy launched the event five years ago, and it became a hit at the Lakes District Museum.
Andy is thrilled that the event aligns with Matariki celebrations in Arrowtown. “It's great to be back with a new exhibition featuring some of New Zealand’s top astrophotographers. We have so many exciting new artworks to display. The recent phenomenal Aurora Australis provided our photographers with an incredible subject and we will have a special section in the exhibition dedicated to that event.”
Resident astronomer Prof. Brian Boyle from Gibbston is part of the Winterstellar team. Brian hopes the images will inspire visitors. “There’s never been a better time to appreciate the dark sky resource in Otago. Dark skies impact well-being: culturally, environmentally, and economically. If this exhibition helps the public understand the importance of protecting our dark skies, we will have fulfilled our purpose.” Exhibition runs from 21st June – 21st July at the Lakes District Museum.
