huge local participation at motatapu
2600 people took to the hills in Wānaka and Arrowtown on the 1st March, to compete in the Motatapu. With five events on offer including a 52km ultra run, a 42km trail marathon, 47km mountain bike, 15km trail run and 4km kids’ trail run, locals shined throughout the events. 200 competitors aged from 7 to 15 years old took on the 4km Junior Trail Run, with Niko Gardiner and Arrowtowner Libby Fleck zooming around the course in impressive times of 00:16:13 and 00:18:09 to win their respective male and female categories.
Arrowtown local Benje Paterson had a “quiet goal” to win today’s Motatapu Marathon. “I wasn’t telling people that, but I always want to podium and I thought if I had a good day I could win.” It did turn out to be a good day and he claimed victory in a time of 03:04:11.
“I’m from Arrowtown and my house is about a kilometre from the start line so it was pretty cool to take the win in my own backyard. This is my first Motatapu marathon but I’ve done everything else in between. I was third in the Miner’s Trail last year and I’ve been on the podium in the Ultra so this was the last one and it’s probably the most satisfying result to be honest.” It was all about redemption for Queenstown local Hannah Wall who was able to step up from a second-place finish in 2024 and take the win in the women’s Ultra field in a time of 06:57:52. The time put her in fifth place overall, 41 minutes ahead of the next finisher (Finn Gallagher) and more than an hour ahead of second place in the women’s field.

Save Butlers Wall
The Arrowtown Charitable Trust are spearheading an initiative to raise money to restore historic Butlers Wall (1886) which supports Buckingham Street as it descends to Dudley’s Precinct and the road to Macetown. A heritage restoration has not been costed but would be expensive. So, the appeal aims to raise awareness of the walls history and the need to repair it before collapse. The AVA supported converting the road to one-way last year to half traffic movements over the wall and mitigate any further degradation. An interview with RNZ discussed the issue in detail and can be found on their website.
Macetown Managed Access
Efforts lead by the Shotover 4WD Club and other key stakeholders, including AVA, are progressing a managed access approach to the Macetown Road. This is to mitigate damage to environmental and heritage assets and the road itself, ensuring it continues to remain open for public access into the future. A boom gate is proposed, with registration required and a small toll to gain access. More detail will be outlined in our full Q1 Newsletter later this month.
Q1 Newsletter
Ensure you are signed up with the AVA to receive the first quarterly newsletter of 2025. Included will be an analysis of our Annual Community Survey, Councillors Report (New), Urban Intensification Update, Arrow River Reserve Management Plan and more… Nick Fifield – Chairperson
