substation noise: a long battle with a partial victory
After 18 months of persistent correspondence with Aurora Energy regarding excessive audible noise from our local electricity substation on McDonnell Road, we are pleased to report some progress. An audible hum emitting from the facility had grown increasingly loud over this period. Community measurements showed this to be outside of recommended levels and it was significantly impacting quality of life living near the station, where the noise could be heard inside homes as far away as Cotter Avenue.
In March 2025, Aurora Energy took action, installing noise barriers in front of two of the three transformers on the site. The improvement has been substantial. The intrusive daytime noise has largely disappeared, though some sound remains audible during quiet nighttime hours. While we are grateful to Aurora Energy for addressing this issue, these barriers treat the symptom, not the cause. The underlying problem is increasing electrical load on aging infrastructure.
Arrowtown is well accustomed power outages which is also a symptom of this.
With ongoing development around Arrowtown, our substation faces growing demand. This means the noise caused by transformer strain will likely return and worsen over time. As a community we should be aware that energy infrastructure is under increasing pressure, and we will continue to face similar issues again in the future.
We encourage residents to monitor noise levels and engage proactively with Aurora Energy about long-term infrastructure planning for our growing community.

watch this space
By early spring the Arrowtown Community Nursery space will be transformed into Arrowtown’s own community plant nursery, growing native trees hardy to local conditions. The trees will be planted in areas where wilding pines have been cleared. With the help of the community, 25,000 native trees have already been planted. The nursery will help continue this important work to restore biodiversity and native ecosystems in the hills around Arrowtown.
The Arrowtown Community Nursery will be growing around 11,000 trees at any one time. Seed from native trees like mountain beech, totara, and kowhai have been eco-sourced and are ready and waiting to be planted in spring.
There will be weekly nursery sessions running from early spring. If you would like to be involved, please email nursery@arrowtownchoppers. co.nz and join our Facebook page: Arrowtown Community Nursery. It would be great to see you there!
It has been pleasing to see improved business activity over the summer, following challenging trading conditions through 2024. Many businesses have reported that this lift in demand has continued into autumn, experiencing record-breaking autumn trading. The standout achievement for the Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association (APBA) this year has been the launch of our brandnew Arrowtown website. This was a significant capital investment, and it’s already delivering results – monthly visitation has increased by 30% since launch. The site now includes a members’ portal, a media and resources section, and a growing library of articles showcasing all Arrowtown has to offer.
Feedback from members on the new website experience has been positive, and the APBA was pleased that our annual members’ survey showed a third straight year of increased member satisfaction. The new website has been further complemented with the launch of a tailored digital marketing campaign, supported by a new quarterly marketing newsletter. Our social media strategy was also refreshed, and a new content creator and part-time administrator were brought on board to support growing needs.
On the ground, infrastructure upgrades have been just as impactful. Butlers Wall protection has been enhanced with the new one-way system, which has also improved the flow of people and vehicles while creating 17 new car parks. At the same time, ABPA has been pleased to see safety improvements at the Bakery Corner, by the Fire Station, and trail realignments and additional bike parks improve the experience of bikers. APBA also remains heavily involved in advocacy for the broader Arrowtown business community, and alongside regular meetings with government and business leaders, we made seven submissions on governance and local government issues. As we look to the future, APBA is cognisant of the need to not only support our traditional core of businesses but we also need to connect our growing cohort of professional services.

arrowtown school report
Our year 5-8 students have been training hard for the upcoming school cross country. It was held on Tuesday the 10th June at Monks farm. A big thanks to Roger Monk for letting us use his property. It is a classic cross country course that will test our kids with lots of hills, mud and cow dung! The top 8 kids will then compete at the Wakatipu Schools Cross Country at the same venue on the 17th June and the top 8 from that event competing at the Central School champs in Cromwell on the 26th June.
