ike many others I was happy to see the back of 2020, because let’s be honest, no matter how you spin it, it was still a crappy year. However, it feels weird wishing everyone a happy new year as 2021, or at least the first six months, won’t be much better than last year. Covid is still around, restrictions are still in place, borders–both state and country–are still closed and no one can really tell us when things will actually get better. For most of 2020 I have remained positive. I got to work from home, which changed my daily commute from 5 hours to zero, we added a Labrador puppy to the family and I have a new best friend called Dan Murphy. One of the biggest things that changed for me though was the travelling–I went from 6 to 7 overseas trips a year to zero. At first I welcomed it. I have been visiting trade fairs for the last 10 years, so I didn’t mind the break. I also thought I would be traveling again in 2021 so enjoyed the time spent at home. Again, remaining positive that there is light at the end of the Covid tunnel… however, I can’t yet see it and it seems to be moving further away. Earlier this year AGHA announced it was cancelling its Sydney Gift Fair, followed by Reed Gift Fairs’ decision to postpone the gift fair and Life InStyle to April. The overseas fairs are not doing much better. Maison&Objet had already moved its show to March, but with the current restrictions in France and the rest of Europe it was not feasible to hold the event and so it got cancelled. Same goes for Ambiente, another major show a lot of Australians attend. First Messe Frankfurt decided to combine Ambiente, Christmasworld and Paperworld into one fair to be held in April, but unfortunately this has now also been cancelled. NY NOW also cancelled its Winter market and the next fair will be in August. Some say trade fairs were already struggling before the pandemic and this might be the catalyst for change. Will we still have physical fairs in five or 10 years’ time or will it just be a digital affair? Or will it be a combination of the two, an option many seem to favour. Find out more on page 26. With no trade fairs to attend, don’t miss our product pages starting on page 32, showcasing all the latest ranges and collections for your store shelves with the seasonal selection being Mother’s Day. Hopefully you noticed our amazing cover from Joseph Joseph. I had the opportunity to chat (via Zoom of course) to Richard Joseph, one half of the brother duo behind this innovative kitchen brand from the UK. They are opening an Australian branch in February and will also be launching heaps of new products. Check out the article starting on page 12. As 2020 was a year unlike any other, many businesses did what they had to do to survive and even thrive in such a difficult climate. On page 18 we talk to wholesalers and retailers about how they experienced 2020 and what they expect from 2021. I hope you enjoy reading this issue. G

he year 2020 is a year not many of us will forget (even though we will try our best). It was a year unlike any other where we were cooped up at home for long periods of time, not being able to go out for drinks or dinner. This inspired people to start making their own cocktails, creating the most amazing meals and where possible have dinner parties for a small group of friends or family. Demand for kitchenware and homewares increased significantly in 2020, especially during lockdown, and retailers reported strong growth. However, with the ongoing uncertainty, restrictions and border closures, many businesses

have put their plans for 2020/21 on hold, while other are going full steam ahead, such as UK brand Joseph Joseph, which is still on track to opening up its first subsidiary in Sydney in February. The brand was previously available through Australian distributor Independence Studios (IS) and Richard Joseph, co-founder and CEO of Joseph Joseph, says the time had come to go it alone. “We met IS 14 years ago and the company has done a great job,” Richard explains. “Australia is one of the first overseas markets we started selling and IS really got behind the brand. Our design philosophies are aligned and they understood what January 2021  13

we were trying to achieve. It was a great partnership. “The wonderful thing about Australia is its sensitivity to design and functional products. If a product was successful in the UK we knew it would be successful in Australia. If a product resonated because it solved a problem, it would do the same in Australia, so there is a great alignment between the two markets,” says Richard. Export has always been a big part of Joseph Joseph’s strategy–it makes up about 80 per cent of the business. International 14  giftguideonline.com.au

markets are very important and there are a number of countries where it has gone direct in the market–opened an office, have a team in marketing and a warehouse. Now one of the world’s leading housewares brands, it has a global presence spanning over 100 countries. “It just made a lot of sense for us to open an Australian company and employ an Australian team to develop Joseph Joseph within the market. We feel there is a real opportunity here.” While Richard iterates that IS did a great job for

them for 14 years, the distributor had many other brands it represented. “A Joseph Joseph branch means we can have 100 per cent focus on our customers. Not taking away from IS but at the end of the day they have a number of brands they look after and there are only so many hours in the day. “Having your own team, the sales relationship and distribution relationship with retailers is totally focused, so we can build a bigger and better business with them. We can execute new product launches better and establish the

brand. We can really drive the brand forward within the market by doing that. “We have ambitions for Joseph Joseph to become a well-established housewares brand within the Australian market, so the natural progression is to have a dedicated team so you get that focus. We are already enjoying great momentum with the brand and the distributor has done a great job for us, so we have this launchpad to continue the momentum, we are definitely not starting from scratch.” He admits the challenge is working with and managing a team on the other side of the world. “We have to grow our business to a certain size to be able to put a team into the market, to be able to open a warehouse and all the rest of it, but also get it to a size so it can run independently from the main business, just because of the practicalities of working with a team on the other side of the world on a day to day basis. “So despite Covid and all the challenges, we are opening a business on the other side of the world and no one of the London office has visited the market,” he laughs. “Setting up a new business remotely is a first for us, but really exciting. We go live on 1 February.” The quirky kitchen brand was launched by twin brothers Richard and Anthony in 2003 in the UK. They started with producing glass chopping boards from the family’s factory in Birmingham

and expanded into other product categories focusing on problem solving around the home. Both brothers are product designers by training and Richard worked for Dyson as a design engineer at the start of his career before launching Joseph Joseph. While Anthony is now more involved in the design process and Richard takes care of the commercial side of the business, they are super passionate about inventing products. “The DNA of the business is in product design,” Richard enthuses. “The design process is always about identifying a problem through research or user testing. Then we try to either make a product work better or solve the problem. We apply a strong aesthetic where we can, but it always revolves around function–the problem solving bit is the hardest to work out.” Each products takes about 18 months from conception to market and of every 100 ideas about five products will make it to the end stage. “There is a clear process which involves design concepts, development stages, engineering and extensive testing and eventually we’ll launch our five final products,” he says. Joseph Joseph launches two collections each year, one in spring and one in autumn and this year it is introducing its largest collection to date. “Covid might have

delayed the launch slightly, but spring in Europe (autumn in Australia) is typically the time we launch our largest new collections. You’ve got the Christmas peak months out of the way, going into sort of a quieter period where we then launch our new products, so that’s why it is a good time to do it. It’s also great timing with the launch of the new Australian business.” Joseph Joseph products are made to have a long and durable life so they can be used daily for at least five years without falling apart or breaking. “We very much select materials that make the products well and are appropriate for the task. They need to have a long usable life, so you get away from the disposable, gimmicky and fad products. You make the product once but you do it well.” This ties in with the current sustainable movement by consumers and Richard says that sustainability is about long, usable life but also about using renewables. “We have a big development 16  giftguideonline.com.au

program at the moment about how we can use renewable materials moving forward.” Joseph Joseph DUO launched in 2017, a collection of essential, everyday products within key homeware categories and includes new innovations plus reimagined Joseph Joseph best-sellers. DUO comes with a distinctive colour palette and an impactful range identity and is aspirational, solution-focused and quality conscious. “We wanted to widen the distribution of the brand with mass premium retailers like Big W, so we introduced DUO. It shares the same design philosophy but features different products at a different price point. We also have a separate design team for this range. So far DUO has been performing very well.” As Zoom has replaced face to face meetings, for the time being at least, Joseph Joseph also had to change its digital focus like so many other companies during the pandemic. “Joseph Joseph had a

big presence at trade fairs, they are very important for our brand such as Maison&Objet, Ambiente and the Inspired Home Show in Chicago. However, this has changed significantly with all the cancellations. No one at our company is traveling at the moment and we used to have our people traveling all over the world. “Covid has pushed the shift to online. It has changed our emphasis internally and we had to make a permanent shift within team structures and within the business. We also sell directly to consumers online, this segment has grown exponentially. “It’s the luck of the draw really. We are in sectors that are actually selling because of lockdown. Dedicated homewares retailers had a record year. I have friends that have amazing successful businesses that are now just dying; it’s sad and has set them back 12 to 15 years. We are very lucky.” Richard adds that the brand will also be introducing two new categories this year,

moving into new areas they haven’t explored before. “We have been working on this for the last three years and we are really excited to get these

products launched and see how we get on. We’ve got really high hopes they will do well in Australia.” Watch this space! G rw.josephjoseph.com

industry INSIGHTS

With 2020 being a year unlike any other, we talk to some industry insiders about their challenges and highlights, and what they are looking forward to in 2021. Adapt or die What struck us in March was the shock factor. … the unknown–were sales going to simply disappear? Was this the new normal? After a crippling end to 2019 with major customers going into administration, the bush fires and affected areas hobbling into 2020, was this going to be the straw that broke the camel’s back? I think adapt or die was a very good metaphor on how to deal with 2020. We obviously had to look at our business as a whole–how we traded, how we communicated, how we operated and how we could support our customers better through this stressful period filled with so much uncertainty. Changes included embracing mediums like Zoom, Teams and FaceTime with virtual meetings and private showings. This allowed us to stay connected to each other and have a face-to-face chat with our customers and suppliers alike. It progressed relationships and allowed us to focus on what the customer wanted in a more intimate setting. This, in turn, allowed them to ask more questions and be more relaxed about sharing their business goals, which wouldn’t be suitable to discuss in a trade fair situation. So naturally, sales grew as we created solutions together. We upgraded operating systems and website 18  giftguideonline.com.au

communication to meet this new online demand. We were able to provide better transparency and resource access, particularly in light of manufacturing and shipping delays, because many of our European manufacturers were in lockdown (and are again now) with limited staff capacity. The more transparency, the more our customers were reassured. Opportunities included the chance to work with new customers of all sizes that reached out from their new position. We provided a lower order value entry threshold to allow new customers to come on board and existing customers to order/add as they were comfortable doing so… baby steps. And from all this growth, we were able to double our staff in the warehouse and the employment of two key personnel who work remotely and will continue to do so. So what opened the sales flood gates? We were fortunate to ride on the back of the ‘puzzle’ wave, and we then had to deal with a massive surge in demand (which we were eternally grateful for). And in turn what did we give back? We sought from our suppliers free activities to share with our customers for their communication channels, we provided promotional support to our customers for their local campaigns as they worked out their new sales strategies and channels and we continued to donate stock, but expanded this from Koala Kids to kids and

community charities such as Good360 and local community groups to provide activities where they were restricted by income or ill health. More news on a sponsorship strategy will unfold this year too that we started working on last July. What goes around comes around, don’t you find? So we did learn a lot from 2020 and moving forward we are more ready to adapt as the situations arise. As a small business, we feel we have grown and our learning curve has been vertical. Though incredibly stressful personally and as a business operator, it has also been a very stimulating experience. 2021 is already set to bring us new challenges. Manufacturers in China and Europe are experiencing massive delays primarily due to accessing resources because of shipping delays and country lockdowns. Shipping rates are rocketing based on this, with increased rates of up to 30 to 100 per cent dependent upon the sailing route. So 2021–let’s see what we have to learn and adapt to this year. At this stage we know it will be a relocation to a larger warehouse, more staff on hand and remotely, and a further expansion of our own Australian designed and made ranges in-wood and ColourAway, using local and indigenous talent. Bring it on! Paula Opfer and Peter Morris, owners of Axis Toys (axistoys.com)

industry

Expect the unexpected After a rocky start the toy market proved to be incredibly buoyant last year. It’s clear that parents working from home are struggling to keep young children entertained. Despite the pandemic, 2020 was an extraordinary year for Artiwood. We relocated our office, secured a product of the year award, appointed a new national key account manager, hired more support staff and added three new brands to our portfolio. The toy market also proved surprisingly buoyant. Both online and physical retailers reported sales ahead of 2019. For Artiwood, our sales finished the year almost 75 per cent ahead of 2019.This result would be higher had we sourced inventory fast enough to meet demand. The toy industry was incredibly fortunate to find itself an unexpected beneficiary of the pandemic. Covid-19 remains the primary driver of retail performance in 2021. In the toy sector, housebound parents remain keen to keep their children entertained. Families will continue diverting discretionary income spent on overseas vacations and social outings towards bringing a little joy into their lives. As a result we expect many of our industry’s trends to continue until mid-year. We’ll then see seasonal sales growth kick in which may go some way to masking any downward trend that emerges in the second half. However, while we expect sales to remain elevated, forecasting just how far abnormal trends will recede remains a challenge. Covid-19 will also drive new importing challenges. For example, there are chronic shipping container shortages in China and Thailand thanks to subdued imports in 2020. It’ll take the global supply chain a year or more to rebalance the location of containers worldwide. Until this happens, shipping charges will remain elevated and import schedules abnormally volatile. Without doubt, expecting the unexpected remains the new normal in 2021. A major Covid-19 outbreak anywhere in Australia could swiftly cripple consumer and business sentiment and leave us all struggling to recover. Andrew McGregor, managing director – customer service, sales & marketing, Artiwood (www.artiwood.com.au)

No signs of slowing down With so many Australians at home and cooking more than ever, the kitchenware and homewares industries were uniquely placed in 2020. As a predominantly kitchenware supplier, one of Dreamfarm’s biggest challenges in 2020 was our access to inventory. With Chinese manufacturers closed for extended periods at the beginning of the pandemic and then labour shortages once factories were able to reopen, all manufacturers were faced with a litany of delays. These issues were compounded for us with the incredible increase in demand for Dreamfarm products, which is showing no sign of slowing down, so we were burning through stock at a much higher rate than ever before. 2020 also saw us win our seventh Red Dot Design Award for Orlid, our new stackable spice jar with a double lid that opens to shake or scoop with the press of a button, which promptly sold out upon launch, as well as two more Australian Good Design Awards including Best in Category for Spina. This year will of course bring with it a new set of challenges, but it will also see us launch four brand-new products and continue to break new ground. With the incredible support of our retailers, we look forward to tackling whatever 2021 throws at us, head-on. Handling the anxiety of the unknown and setting up staff to work from home in the early days was daunting as well as setting Alex (our CEO) up to isolate and work from under my house. He was on his way back from the US when we closed our borders but before people had to hotel quarantine. Other challenges include: Trying to remain upbeat when so many were finding it so tough, and staying positive for our reps and customers without being insensitive to their struggles Zoom fatigue–trying to train new staff and sales teams remotely, as well as maintaining the interest of buyers when launching new products who spent their days on Zoom call after Zoom call. Juggling act–with so many suppliers out of stock or pushing back product launches, we were having customers bringing forward major POs or taking on new products to fill shelves. It meant tremendous growth, but it was certainly a juggle. No trade shows–I never thought I’d say this because tradeshows are so exhausting, but gosh we can’t wait to see everyone face to face again. Cate McDermott, chief of staff Dreamfarm (dreamfarm.com)

Wouldn’t change a thing 2020 has definitely been a challenging year as for us. It has been the first time since we started our business that we have been negatively impacted in such a big way. Our lowlights would be having a 100 per cent drop in sales for April, knowing that a government can just shut your business down, the loss of freedom (being in Melbourne) and the inability to give our retailers any kind of certainty. As much as we had some drastic lowlights, our highlights were also pretty meaningful. We have an amazing new B2C website, we released a very successful new line of art-inspired gifts that gave Australia exactly what it needed during this difficult time. We became much closer to our staff and even though times were tough, we managed to keep everyone employed and in high spirits, and we had an awesome Xmas party. Because of all of this, we will be more stable, stronger and focused for 2021. All in all, we wouldn’t change a thing. Tui Cordemans, co-founder Koh Living (kohliving.com.au)

Support for local retail

Online potential for future growth

Wow–2020 was the craziest year yet. The first few months we couldn’t get stock shipped as Covid-19 closed parts of China and after it arrived here in March we didn’t want to order as sales tumbled. Things recovered after lockdown in July to September but then we ran short of stock with slow supply from factories, huge shipping delays and massive increases in shipping costs. This affected sales in September and October while November and December sales were well above 2019 as more stock arrived. With support from the government through JobKeeper in April to September, the cash flow boost helped us survive the worst of the downturn. For us, we found regional customers did exceptionally well right through 2020 as they were almost not impacted by Covid-19 in most areas. We think the absence of spending on overseas travel has helped support local retail and local tourism and this is likely to continue through 2021.

2020 was such a challenging year, but it was also full of opportunities. I think when I look back on 2020 in years to come I will think of it as the WORST BEST thing that ever happened to us. Our bricks and mortar store in Orange was closed for three months. It allowed me the time to focus completely on our online store, creating great original content (particularly through Instagram where we took our audience along for the ride through the highs and the lows of lockdown) and it gave me the opportunity to tick off some of the bigger picture ideas that had been floating around in my head for years. Our online store went bonkers and it highlighted for our business that online has so much potential for future growth. Our challenge now is to turn those first time buyers into loyal clients. When we reopened our doors after the three months I didn’t want all of that stress and heartache to be for nothing–I wanted to open with a bang. We revamped our branding and all packaging, combined both my homewares and clothing store on the one website, and worked with some brands on exciting collaborations to create our own unique product–Kip and co, Bonita, Robert Gordon, Rewild and Co.

Chris Noel, director of TNW Australia (www.tnw.com.au)

Pip Brett, owner Jumbled (www.jumbledonline.com)

Overcoming more than one hurdle Over the past 12 months, we (as a business and as a family) have been pivoting on our feet and overcoming hurdles as best we can. Obviously at the beginning of 2020 Few and Far was trying to bounce back after the horrific bush fires that tore through our beautiful South Coast region. It was unfortunate that as we were finding our feet again, Covid-19 hit our shores. We were extremely nervous about the developments as the information around the virus was constantly changing from one day to the next. It was a very scary and chaotic time. While 2020 was extremely challenging, we did experience some amazing wins as a business for which we are incredibly grateful. We were fortunate that the plans and procedures we had put in place prior to Covid meant we had a solid foundation to rest upon, so as the situation became more ‘familiar’ we were able to open our doors and trade extremely successfully. 20  giftguideonline.com.au

We actually experienced a huge surge in sales due to all of our retail locations being located in holiday destinations (Huskisson, Berry and Bowral), so people wanted to travel to, and support, these regions. This in itself became a challenge, as along with a surge in sales came the need for more staff… and urgently. It has been hard to forecast how many ‘extra’ staff we can sustain, given the uncertainty of the times and the situation we have found ourselves in with Covid, but the demand has remained high, so we need to ensure that we are meeting the business’ needs. Another silver lining for us was that this was the push we needed to really polish our online stores (as there was the chance it would become our only source of revenue if the shops were forced to close at any given time). We invested a lot of energy and money into making it a fantastic digital experience for our customers. We also immediately

acted upon expanding our product range online, ensuring we always had as much stock as possible and even introduced an e-decorating service to our customers. However, the biggest challenge for us during this time has been that we can’t travel internationally. Our brand rests upon the notion of ‘bringing the world home’ and travelling internationally to source pieces is a huge part of what we do. Fortunately, we had already established great relationships with our suppliers, meaning we were able to trust them to work with us and our ideas digitally (not quite the same as experiencing it all in person, but at least we had options). This meant that we could still have containers of new and repeat stock arriving regularly throughout the year, which was a huge bonus given the dire stock situation some businesses found themselves in. We truly believe that bricks and mortar shopping experiences far

outweigh the digital, especially for our brand. We take every effort to ensure our shops are beautiful and curated, and we want people to see and enjoy them. If the lockdowns and turmoil of 2020 have taught us anything, it’s the importance of bricks and mortar locations, human connection and being able to get back out there to explore, connect and enjoy the experience of life. We have strived to stay positive and just keep adapting to the times. We remain extremely grateful for the positives that have come out of 2020 and we have a bright future to look forward to. Personally, we don’t see international travel opening up for quite some time, so our focus will be to continue building our brand and the ‘experience’ of our brand, and to make the most of the opportunities and challenges that have been presented to us through Covid. IN A BOX B orn from the realisation that there were few options for experience-based gifting in Australia, Eric Amiel and Thomas Dufraisse, both of FrancoAustralian origin and lovers of adventure, travel, sports and the outdoors, launched BananaLab in 2017 to fill a gap for those looking to gift unique and memorable moments for their loved ones in place of purposeless or unwanted, material gifts. The concept is simple; one gift box, thousands of hand-picked activities to choose from. Each experience gift box contains a booklet with an entire range of experiences and a voucher, which can be redeemed for any one offer. With over 1,100 experiences available, BananaLab has made it easy to select the ideal experience, no matter the receiver’s age,

Whether it’s an experience, DIY with some bubbles or gifts with a psychology-backed gift matcher, gift boxes have become the go-to gift for many Australians.

interests, skills or location–a point that is especially pertinent given the wide range of businesses and communities that have been negatively affected by both the bushfires and prolonged lockdowns that have occurred. “We make it a priority to support local economies by prioritising partnerships with local providers that offer one-of-a-kind experience and who we know will give their best to anyone who chooses an experience with them,” they say. “When selecting our experience partners, we follow strict criteria of quality of service, safety and customer satisfaction. As we mentioned, supporting local has always been a top priority for us, however, we also aim to curate a diverse range of offers to not only avoid competition amongst our partners, but also to make sure

that the BananaLab experience continues to be unique for our customers.” BananaLab is loosely translated from a French expression meaning ‘smile like a banana’. “When you are super happy and you can’t stop smiling. Not only that, but the idea behind the name goes back to our philosophy of sharing joy and gifting smiles that stretch from

ear to ear (like a banana)–exactly as our gift boxes do. “So, with ‘banana’ in reference to the smiles and ‘lab’ alluding the experiences, BananaLab seemed like the perfect name,” they enthuse. Recently, BananaLab partnered with Coles and Woolworths. The co-founders had approached several retailers, however, given the current situation with Covid-19,

many of them were reluctant to begin a partnership with them until a later date. “Thankfully, Coles and Woolworths saw our potential and the quality of our products, and were more than enthusiastic to get us on board,” they say. “We are so proud of this partnership and excited to see where it leads. “Much like many other industries, Covid-19 did impact our business. However, we were lucky that this

was mainly our B2B endeavours (we currently have corporate gift boxes on offer). So, we decided to focus our efforts on our B2C strategies and marketing, which our partnership with Coles and Woolworths are a result of.” Being in competition with big players on the market is not easy, they add and they’ve definitely faced many challenges including financial difficulties, budget constraints for marketing and

earning credibility with their experience partners. “However, by focusing on forming relationships with partners from local and small businesses, and leveraging our position as an Australian-based start-up, we’ve been able to win support and grow from strength to strength.” Indeed, now more than ever, the Victoria-based start-up is in a unique position to help Australians enjoy everything our country has to offer. “Australia has so many wonderful places to discover and we are so proud to be able to bring these experiences that the whole world dreams of discovering to everyday Australians,” Sarah Boukobza, BananaLab’s marketing manager, says. While Covid-19 gave BananaLab a major boost in sales, for Champagne Creative founder Michelle Kerr the recent stage 4 lockdown in Melbourne inspired her to start her own business. Feeling quite isolated and uncertain, her natural response is to do something creative so she started searching the internet for something that she could do to switch off, but couldn’t find what she was after.

“The idea for Champagne Creative and ‘gift boxes for crafts’ came to me during the Covid-19 Stage 4 lockdowns in Melbourne,” she explains. “All of the shops were closed, so I was facing multiple delivery fees and shipping delays to get all of the craft supplies I needed and that’s when I thought ‘wouldn’t it be great if I could just get everything I need delivered in one box to carve out a little creative me-time?’ So I decided to create it myself.” After the initial product idea, the next decision she made was to include a mini bottle of prosecco, as her vision for the brand was for it to be more than just a box of craft supplies. “The vision is to support people to find their inner creative, have a little me-time and indulge in the power of creative flow. And so, the name of the business became obvious to me– Champagne Creative.” However, launching a business during a pandemic and while in lockdown is no easy feat and the first hurdle she encountered after getting started was trying to source inventory in a timely manner. None of the stores were open to the public and because many people we’re getting their ‘craft on’ in lockdown, supplies were often out of stock. “I was then faced with lengthy shipping delays due to the huge influx of online purchasing in Melbourne. One inventory order took four weeks to arrive from a January 2021  23

store 10km away! These delays pushed my launch date back a whole month and I was concerned that I may have missed the ‘prime’ opportunity of selling my craft boxes while many were at home looking for things to do, but the feedback since my launch has been fantastic.” Indeed, many people say that they’ve been looking for something like this for ages, that it’s such a unique idea, that it’s the perfect gift for the crafty people in their life, and that the addition of the prosecco bottle is a big winner. “There was a huge influx of gift box businesses that launched during 2020 in direct response to the Covid-19 pandemic. People were looking for self-care packs and things to deliver to those in their life doing it tough. The difference with my gift boxes is, it’s not just a box of finished products like candles or bath salts–it’s everything you need to make those items yourself and in my opinion, much more exciting to try something new and have something that you’ve handmade.

24  giftguideonline.com.au

“They’re also not your average bag of pom poms or fabric squares available in craft store kits…every box guides you to create a modern, on-trend project that I’ve personally picked out and designed myself–that you’ll actually want to display in your home,” she adds. Kerr admits she has always been a crafty person making DIY projects and her first job as a teenager was in a local scrapbooking and craft store. So when she started her gift boxes business the selection process was simple–what do I want to create for myself and then how can I package that and teach it to others, she explains. “I trusted that if I wanted to create it, then others would too and I’ve stuck to that principle as we’ve continued to launch over 14 boxes. As my audience has grown, I’ve also turned to them to get their input on which creative projects they would love to see and that helps me to decide which ones make the cut.” So, what does Kerr have planned for 2021? “I have so many ideas for craft boxes that it’s hard to keep a lid on them all. You can expect to see new craft box projects launch every month and I’m currently spending time thinking about some couples boxes for Valentine’s Day that couples can make together as part of their date night. I’m also exploring the option of running in person classes with our kits in late 2021, once the impact of Covid-19 has hopefully reduced.” For founder and CEO of Clean Tea, Jordana Edwards, it’s all about 100 per cent organic herbal teas and she has created a number of gift boxes for many different occasions.

Each gift box contains three delicious teas, making it the perfect choice for family, friends and even mums to be. Clean Tea was launched in 2013 in northern NSW and this Aussie business has grown into a company with more than 50 blends–each product is hand-blended, sustainability sourced, organic, gluten-free, vegan, and free from chemicals and artificial flavours. For example, there is a box perfect for summertime sipping. Containing three delicious iced tea blends and an iced tea straw, this is bound to be in high rotation over the holiday period. It includes three 30-gram teas of: • Blue Byron Iced Tea: colour changing iced tea. • Strawberry Sunrise Iced Tea: made with real dried fruits, you can freeze into colourful cubes, blend into cocktails or mocktails or just enjoy it chilled. Flavours include strawberry, hibiscus, green apple, blueberries, papaya and rose hip. • Berry-Licious Iced Tea: high in vitamin C, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, you will find flavours of hibiscus, blueberries, cranberries and goji berries. Tea Lover Box is for the tea obsessed and Clean Tea has gift boxed its beautiful Glass Infuser bottle with three loose leaf teas. You can choose from its bestselling teas–Dream Tea, Clean Tea and Byron Bliss, its Iced teas–Berry-licious, Blue Byron and Summer Sangria and Pregnancy Tea–Balance, Tea for Two and Lullaby. Take the guesswork out of gift giving with the ultimate matching of gifts to people with a psychology-backed Gift Matcher.

Troppolicious, an innovative new Australian gift giving company, has the perfect gift already hand-selected for the workout warrior, the creative genius, the eco champion, foodie or yogi or for that special ‘babe-licious’ or ‘bloke’licious’ someone in your life. Founders Allison and Jason both had successful corporate careers in Sydney, before they threw it all in and ventured to Cairns, where they bought a tropical flower farm. “The idea of Troppolicious started circling in our heads as we perfected the art of sending gift boxed flowers direct to our customers’ door,” they state on their website. “As a small business with a great Aussie product people would often say ‘I had no idea they even existed’. We noticed this over and over as we stumbled across other local hidden gems, that no-one seemed to know about. We knew we had to start something. Make it super easy to find the perfect gift.” So they created gift boxes injected with personality, full of hidden gems, exclusively from creative Aussie sellers–bright, fresh, fun and sophisticated. “We developed a personality profiler that matches our gift boxes to people’s personality traits, likes, dislikes, age, gender and more. We’ve made it super-simple (and fun) for the buyer.” There’s also a free reminder service that helps everyone who’s thoughtful, but a little forgetful when it comes to buying gifts. They send a little reminder nudge before the date. All gift boxes are earth-friendly without waste or plastics and with every gift box sold, Troppolicious makes a donation to Bernardos Gifts for Kids. G

Trading PLACES

With 2020 done and dusted, will 2021 be the year that trade fairs return?

A

fter a tough and challenging 2020, many people are looking forward to the new year, especially now that the gift fairs will be back in 2021. Following government advice, large scale exhibitions will return to ICC Sydney. Reed Exhibitions managing director, Brian Thomas, says this feels like a pivotal moment in Australia’s post-pandemic recovery. “Trade events and exhibitions have always been places where entire industries come together in one place to celebrate what they do, build connections and, of course, trade,” he says.

26  giftguideonline.com.au

The annual economic impact of Life Instyle and Reed Gift Fairs exceeds $30 million and these two events remain pivotal to the future success of retailers, wholesalers, product designers and manufacturers. “Now more than ever, Australia’s key industries need that spark, that catalyst for growth that exhibitions are known for, from which a strong and speedy recovery can begin. “The flow-on benefits of this are substantial and we hope this update will be the catalyst for the recovery of other industries,” Thomas adds. Reed Gift Fair and Life Instyle were planned for 20 to 23 February 2021, unfortunately Covid-19

reared its ugly head again and both fairs have now been moved to April. In a statement the organisers say it has become clear that the recent outbreaks are having an impact on our community sentiment. “Prior to these recent outbreaks of Covid-19, we were optimistic that Reed Gift Fairs Sydney would run safely and successfully next month. While we continue to have permission to operate the event under our detailed Covid-safe plan with the venue and NSW government, with many of our community based interstate, border closures now mean they may be unable to attend in February. “As a result, Reed Exhibitions has taken the difficult decision to revise the show timing and with this in mind, we will be moving Reed Gift Fairs Sydney to the new dates of 17- 20 April 2021, colocated with Life Instyle at the ICC Sydney.” This follows AGHA’s statement early this year saying its Sydney Gift Fair had been cancelled. “The AGHA board reluctantly wish to announce that due to continued community based Covid-19 cases in Sydney, and the various state border closures, it has become necessary and prudent to cancel the 2021 Sydney Gift Fair at Sydney Olympic Park in February,” the statement reads. “Whilst the fair could potentially operate under the current NSW Health guidelines, it is unlikely that the usual number of exhibitors and buyers would be able to attend. This would result in a less than optimal outcome for the event and all those participating. “The decision to cancel has not been made lightly. The health and safety of all staff, exhibitors and buyers is paramount to AGHA and is the only responsible outcome given the current circumstances.”

trade fairs

For many buyers, the beginning of the year is the start of trade fair season with shows such as Maison&Objet, NY NOW, Christmasworld and Ambiente taking up most of January to March. Originally scheduled for 7 to 10 February 2021, the continuing impact of Covid-19 including government restrictions on large gatherings, travel limitations and the current closure of the Javits Convention Centre, have made it impossible to stage the NY NOW Winter Market. Tim Hart, senior vice president NY NOW, says it’s extremely disappointing having to cancel the show, but it has become clear that it will not be possible to bring the community together in New York in February. “Our attention now turns to build on the success of our recently launched NY NOW Digital Market,” he says. “The Digital Market is a year-round discovery, connection and lead generation platform for our community, and we were delighted to welcome more than 650 brands for its launch.” The Digital Market will remain online as an ongoing resource for buyers, meeting buyers’ sourcing and replenishment needs, any time, from anywhere. “It’s a privilege to be on this digital journey with our community and we are thrilled by the possibilities it creates for us all, particularly when digital and in-person converge at the Javits Centre in August 2021.” Winter Market Week will run online between Thursday 28 January and Wednesday 3 February and features a full program of content +

experiences, show specials, new product introductions and more. As Covid-19 continues to disrupt the scheduling of trade fairs around the world, the organisers of Maison&Objet decided to move the physical fair from January to March 2021. Unfortunately, this decision has been revised and the next Maison&Objet will now be held from 9 to 13 September 2021. Originally scheduled for 22 to 26 January 2021, the international lifestyle show will offer online events throughout the first quarter of 2021. “Maison&Objet announces a revitalising start to 2021,” the organisers stated in a press release. “A season fully packed with online events to stimulate trading activity in the home decor, design, crafts, and the lifestyle industries” Following the success of the Digital Fair in September 2020–which brought together 4,292 brands and nearly 215,000 unique international visitors–research shows that the home décor sector is significantly less impacted by the pandemic than other industries, in fact, some might say this sector has seen a boost as people are spending more time at home than ever before. The 8 thematic Digital Days will be held every week from 27 January through 19 March 2021, every Wednesday through Friday. Trade fair organiser Messe Frankfurt also decided to revamp its spring 2021 with an International Consumer Goods Show– Special Edition, encompassing Ambiente, Christmasworld and Paperworld. However, with no end in sight to the pandemic any time soon, Messe Frankfurt has decided to cancel all trade fairs scheduled for the first half year in 2021. With events banned in Germany and ongoing travel restrictions mean it is basically impossible for the International Consumer Goods show to be held in April and Heimtextil in May as was first planned. “The coronavirus pandemic has taken centre stage and our plans have not escaped its impact,” says Detlef Braun, member of the executive board of Messe Frankfurt. “In light of the current situation, it would not be possible for us to satisfy our customers’ requirements for international trade fairs in April or May. “An annual spring event is essential for the trend-based order cycles in the entertainment, technology, consumer goods and textile industries, which means that postponing these

events until the second half of the year would not serve the interests of exhibitors. “As a result of the current situation and ongoing travel restrictions, exhibitors are faced with huge uncertainties regarding who will be allowed to be present and their customer contacts, making it extremely difficult to commit to trade fair participation.” With no physical trade fairs possible, Messe Frankfurt has created numerous digital offerings including Consumer Goods Digital Day on 20 April 2021. The content of the Digital Day will be focused on ways in which retailers can help their businesses, which will be supplemented by the opportunities presented by Nextrade, an order and data management portal for the home and living sector. “The ongoing shutdown of retailers in our visitor countries has made relevant up-to-date information and solutions essential, and we are satisfying this demand with our digital offerings during this volatile time. “As you know, we are also continuing to do everything in our power to make safe and successful trade fairs possible, because nothing can take the place of face-to-face encounters.” Heimtextil will now take place from 11 to 14 January 2022, followed by Christmasworld from 28 January to 1 February 2022, and Paperworld from 29 January to 1 February 2022. Ambiente will be opening its doors from 11 to 15 February 2022 in its customary slot. G January 2021  27

Lifestyle

HOME

The Inspired Home Show 2021 is reconnecting the industry around innovation and inspiration this August.

T

oday’s consumers want homes that reflect their personality, so retailers must inspire lifestyles. With that in mind, the International Home + Housewares Show has been reimagined as The Inspired Home Show. The show name change is part of the International Housewares Association (IHA)’s expansion of The Inspired Home platform, which was created to align with consumer trends shifting from functional home design to aspirational lifestyle development. Consumers drive retail purchases and their lifestyles drive the things they buy. Design and function are no longer the sole reasons people purchase housewares products. The Inspired Home Show will maintain all relevant aspects of the International Home + Housewares Show, featuring a diverse assortment of products showcased in five expos: Dine + Décor featuring tabletop, cookware, bakeware and home décor; Clean + Contain featuring cleaning, organisation and clothing care items; Wired + Well featuring home, kitchen, health and personal care electrics; Discover Design featuring designdriven products from all show categories; and International Sourcing featuring value-priced products from China and Taiwan.

Displays highlighting trends and product design Pantone ColourWatch, a special exhibit designed by Pantone, focuses on colour palettes representing the strongest home furnishings trends for 2022. Each story includes the individual Pantone colours, philosophy behind the colour palette and actual show products illustrating each palette. designed products from around the world. The museum-like gallery leads to the Discover | design expo where buyers will find high-end, design-forward concepts from across product categories and around the globe, many being seen for the first time at The Inspired Home Show. The 2021 show will provide retailers with the latest developments in the smart home movement. The IHA Smart Home pavilion features exhibitors of smart home brands and connected products for the different areas of the home. More exhibitors with smart and connected products can be found throughout the show, identified by special signage in their booths and listed in Housewares Connect 365. The Inventors Corner will feature 60 exhibitors showcasing new housewares innovations and just-ready-for-market introductions. Adjacent to the Inventors Corner, the Inventors Revue will provide informative sessions addressing product development and marketing topics as well as expert review panels for inventor product feedback. IHA Global Innovation Awards (gia) for Product Design include the best-of-the-best new products for 2021. Hand-selected by an expert panel as the most innovative of the year, one finalist in each category will be named Global Honouree at the gia gala dinner on the first night of show. gia Retail Awards display showcases best practices from the world’s most innovative home and housewares retailers: unique store design and branding ideas, examples of exquisite visual merchandising and creative displays that will impart inspiration for setting your store apart. The in-store retail experience is reaching new levels. Interactive displays, augmented reality

and experimental activities are playing a role in keeping consumers engaged in brick-andmortar stores. New retail models are making it possible for emerging product developers to enter the market. You’ll find these concepts on display at The Inspired Home Show, in the Hall of Global Innovation.

Value-adding events for buyers • New Exhibitor Preview, held just before the show opens on Saturday morning, featuring 90 new-to-the-Show exhibitors (Saturday 7 August) • Trending Today Preview, run concurrently with the New Exhibitor Preview. For 2021, the Trending Today Preview will focus on products that help consumers be ‘Healthy @ Home’. The global pandemic has dramatically changed how we live, work and play, and while we look to the future, the lasting effects of how we live within our homes will likely change our living patterns and buying decisions. (Saturday 7 August) • Networking After Dark Reception is a show party free of charge for all international show visitors and includes food, drinks, music and international networking. (Monday 9 August) • The Chicago Retail Tour allows international visitors experience first-hand leading retail stores in the Chicago area. The tour will begin with a complimentary continental breakfast and US Retail overview. Throughout the day, the tour will visit some of the most exciting home + housewares retailers in suburban Chicago.
