We chat to managing director Sally Dunn about Annabel Trends’ 60-year journey starting out at the kitchen table and growing into a multi-category brand with a purpose-built headquarters. Sally Dunn

Q&A
Annabel Trends is celebrating 60 years in business, how has the brand evolved during this time? Annabel Trends has come a long way since my mother Annie first began sewing soft toys by hand at the kitchen table. What started as a home-grown passion soon evolved into beautifully made kitchen napery—aprons, oven mitts, tea towels and table linens—all lovingly produced here in Australia. For the first two decades, this was the heart of the brand: colour, craft and quality. In the 80s, Annie spotted an opportunity in a category no one was really playing in at the time: garden gifting. This moment marked the beginning of our expansion into new lifestyles and new ways to bring joy into everyday moments. From there, Annabel Trends has continued to grow thoughtfully and creatively, adding bath and body, picnic, travel, baby, men’s gifting and more. What began in Annie’s home has now grown into a vibrant, multi-category brand with a purpose-built headquarters, yet the essence remains the same: bright, thoughtful gifts designed to make people smile. Sixty years on, we’re proud to honour where we started while continuing to evolve, innovate and celebrate life’s everyday moments in colour.
Annabel Trends founder Annie Dawe
We thought we’d never fill the space until, of course, we did. It was a huge step forward and a real symbol of growth and possibility. CHALLENGES: Running a business from an inner-city terrace—operating with no storage, limited access and delivery trucks navigating a narrow one-way street required patience from everyone involved. It was chaotic, cramped and character-building in every sense.
“In the 80s, Annie spotted an opportunity in a category no one was really playing in at the time: garden gifting.” Navigating compliance and Australian standards—in the early days, the rules were less clear and information wasn’t readily available. Learning how to ensure every product met the required standards was a steep learning curve—one that came with a few hard lessons. Seeing our designs copied overseas— nothing is more disheartening than finding your products—sometimes not even released yet—being copied in China and appearing at international trade shows. It’s frustrating, but it’s also a reminder of the strength of our designs and the importance of constant innovation. Annie Dawe
After 60 years in the industry, what are some of the highlights and challenges that stand out for you during that time? HIGHLIGHTS: Georges of Melbourne’s first order—in our very first year, the iconic Georges of Melbourne (famed department store in Melbourne now sadly closed down) placed an order with Annie. She spent her entire housekeeping budget on fabric, raced home and sewed the whole lot herself. That moment—seeing our products in such a prestigious store—was unforgettable and incredibly validating. Winning Reed Gift of the Year 1997—a career-defining milestone. The winning range was a beautifully bottled gardener’s hand wash, bath soak and shower gel and the prize was an around-the-world trip to attend trade shows in New York, Paris and London. For a small Australian brand it was nothing short of extraordinary. Moving into our very own factory in Burleigh Heads—we finally had room to grow. JANUARY 2026 19
Q&A
How has the industry changed from the launch of Annabel Trends 60 years ago until today and do you have any advice for businesses just starting out in the industry? The landscape has changed dramatically. When Annie began, new ideas came from hopping on a plane and discovering products no one else was making. Now, with social media and the internet, global trends are instantly accessible from your office chair. It’s a completely different pace and a much more competitive playing field. For anyone thinking about starting their own business I would say, focus on originality—find the idea or product that sets you apart. And research, research, research. Understanding the market is the strongest foundation you can give your business. Also, surround yourself with great people. You simply can’t do it all and trying to will exhaust you. A supportive, talented team is everything. Mum’s advice was always, ‘when in doubt, don’t’. It’s a line that still guides me today and helps me step back and rethink any opportunity that doesn’t feel quite right.

The next 60 years? Think more colour, more joy, more ‘where did you get that?’ gifts. We’ll keep evolving with our customers and designing bright, bold products that help people celebrate life’s moments—one joyful unwrapping at a time. Nothing is off the table when it comes to sparking happiness. It has been incredibly exciting to be part of the Australian gift industry. We’ve been supported by so many wonderful customers who’ve embraced our bright, bold designs and believed in our ability to bring a little happiness to everyday moments. The Iluka Tote
IT’S IN THE
BAG
Hustle & Grace founder Cindi Greentree shares her mission to redefine carry goods for hybrid women.
24
giftguideonline.com.au
rom the boardroom to the beach and household chores to dinner, women juggle countless roles and now there’s finally one bag designed to carry it all. Gold Coast entrepreneur Cindi Greentree recently launched Hustle & Grace, a coastalluxe lifestyle brand with a mission to solve the daily chaos of modern living through emotionally intelligent design. Frustrated by beautiful bags that couldn’t keep up (leaks, dead phones, too many bag swaps), she designed a piece that genuinely solves real-life pain points without sacrificing style. The result is the Iluka Tote: a refined, intelligent, go-everywhere bag that matches the speed and complexity of modern women’s lives. It forms part of an overall system of solutions for women who need practical tools to support their lifestyle. Every detail is livedexperience led, emotionally intelligent and intentionally elegant. “The challenge with many bag products in today’s environment is that they tend to meet the needs of one requirement in life,” Greentree says. “The bags built for practicality tend to deliver on function but not form. I wanted to create a bag that delivered on both form and function and the Hustle & Grace Iluka Tote does this and for a reasonable price given its quality and presentation.” Indeed, at the centre of the launch to simplify and support the busy life of a woman is the Iluka Tote. Crafted from eco-luxe vegan pebble leather with gold hardware, the premium hybrid bag blends refined aesthetics with intelligent functionality: padded laptop sleeve, insulated food and bottle compartment, RFID-blocking card slots, convertible straps, built-in charging port and wipeable beauty pocket, all in one seamless design. The name Iluka comes from Greentree’s heritage, where as a child she was given the name Iluka. The Aboriginal word Iluka means near the sea or by the sea. This name reflects the coastal location of the town of Iluka, New South Wales, Australia and the connection the Bundjalung or Yaegl/ Yaygir people, who traditionally inhabited the area, had with the ocean. Now as an adult, she still weaves the name Illuka into her life and the business to reflect her history and journey. The brand is ideal for women whose lives are centred around work, corporate, travel and socialising. With dual diplomas across mental health, alcohol and other drugs, community services and child protection, plus a diploma in business management, Greentree brings rare depth in human-
clothing & accessories
“I was tired of switching between three different bags. The Iluka Tote is the solution I wished existed: one beautiful, intelligent bag that adapts to every role women play and the places they play, corporate, travel and socialising.”
The lluka Tote is designed to carry it all
centred design, calm leadership and practical problem-solving. Her career leading teams in the domestic and family violence sector sharpened her belief that design should reduce daily stress, restore confidence and create a sense of control, especially for women who carry it all. Born and raised on the Gold Coast, Greentree describes her life as barefoot mornings and boardroom afternoons. She has juggled business ownership, leadership roles and motherhood, often packing school lunches at dawn and pitching big ideas by midday. That rhythm, freedom and discipline, calm and momentum, became the DNA of Hustle & Grace. “For years I lived the juggle, school lunches at dawn, boardrooms by midday, flights on Fridays and still wanting to look polished for dinner. “I was tired of switching between three different bags. The Iluka Tote is the solution I wished existed: one beautiful, intelligent bag that adapts to every role women play and the places they play, corporate, travel and socialising. Products created from real lived experience are often the ones that resonate
the most and that’s why I believe Hustle & Grace will succeed.” Greentree adds the Iluka Tote is the first of many products within the Hustle & Grace business that will see the brand become a national and international household name, one bag, one product at a time. The tote and future products like the Kirra Tote and Charcoal Flask are created by a woman who actually lives the hybrid life, ensuring every feature solves a real pain point. “Beyond convenience, the brand is about confidence. By removing the stress of forgotten items, leaks, dead phones or mismatched styles, Hustle & Grace empowers women to move fluidly through their day without compromise. “Finally, Hustle & Grace has designed and delivered a bag that is designer, luxurious, practical, stunning and flexible, a true reflection of the modern woman who does it all.” The brand’s vision is to expand into seasonal colourways, accessories and future designs like the Kirra Beach Tote, building a global community of empowered women who embody both hustle and grace.
The Kirra Beach Tote is a larger, market-toshoreline silhouette designed for coastal days and roomy weekending and comes with double-walled insulated stainless-steel hydration, laptop sleeve, pram straps, lunch kit and travel makeup bag. A Iluka Mini and extended bundles are planned for 2026. “Hustle & Grace delivers a system of solutions comprising products which reflect polished hybrid luxury: one intelligently designed bag for every role, solving real daily pain points, no more leaks, dead phones or bag-swapping, while signalling refined coastal style. It’s functional calm in the chaos, created by a woman who lives the pace.” In line with her a purpose-led lifestyle brand, Greentree also founded the Inner Grace Project, a guided coaching program that ‘helps modern women understand their emotional load, reduce overwhelm and rebuild calm so life feels lighter and clearer’. “The Inner Grace Project is for women who feel like they’re holding a lot, even if no one else can see it. It’s for the woman who looks organised and capable on the outside, but feels tired, stressed or overwhelmed on the inside,” she states. “For the woman who keeps going for her family, her work and everyone who depends on her, even when she has nothing left in the tank. It’s for the woman who’s always been the strong one, the reliable one, the one who holds everything together, but is craving more space, more calmness and more support. “It’s for mothers, working women, carers, leaders and anyone who feels the emotional and mental load of daily life.” The program features gentle, practical modules designed for real women and real life, Greentree adds, including burnout cycle, emotional load reset, nervous system basics, boundaries, identity rebuilding, behaviour change, living with more ease. Balthazar Kookwinkel
Cooking & Connection Since 2012, the Netherlands’ Balthazar Kookwinkel has been sharing the joy of cooking and dining through great products, human connection and a unique personal touch. BY MICHELLE HESPE
B
althazar Kookwinkel owner and founder Irma Thierig explains that she and her family always had a dream of opening a store based upon the joy of cooking. “We all have a shared passion for cooking, beautiful objects and the spirit of la dolce vita,” she says. “As a family with roots in advertising, marketing, design and hospitality, we had the perfect mix of creativity and experience needed to bring that dream to life.” From the moment people cross the threshold of Balthazar, they’re met with vibrant colours and beautiful products, all 28
giftguideonline.com.au
immaculately presented in aisles that are easy to navigate. “Mediterranean influences and the changing seasons play a significant role in our store’s atmosphere,” Thierig says. “The sections within the store are clearly defined and we update the themed tables on a weekly basis to keep the element of surprise alive. This constant change inspires our customers.” With its product choices, Balthazar embraces a broader definition of cooking. “It’s not just about preparing a meal, it’s about everything that surrounds it and goes into it—the presentation, atmosphere,
enjoyment and relaxation. This is why we offer a curated selection of cooking supplies, tableware, gifts and seasonal items, all reflecting our unique sense of style.” Thierig says she doesn’t need to imagine what new visitors to Balthazar are thinking, because usually their first reaction is ‘wow’. Balthazar Kookwinkel was one of five retailers around the world named as an IHA Global Innovation Awards (gia) global honouree for retail excellence at The Inspired Home Show in Chicago in March 2025. The gia expert jurors were all in agreement, praising Balthazar Kookwinkel for its unique and highly engaging concept. They

commented that the store is ‘based upon the strong vision of its owner, where every little detail has been thought through, so you can feel the vision in the storytelling throughout the store’. “Being recognised as a gia global honouree has had such a positive impact on our company,” Thierig says. “It’s not only a great honour, but it also brings significant positive publicity. More people are visiting the shop, because they have read about our award and want to see the store for themselves.”
Going the extra mile for customers With seven dedicated staff who treat customers like old friends and family, there’s a homey feeling permeating every aspect of Balthazar. “We’re a diverse group and each of us brings something different to the business. “I embody Balthazar and everything I do for the store doesn’t really feel like work. When I’m at our shop, it feels like home and I probably spend more time there than at home,” she laughs. Further adding to the sense of home, Thierig’s daughter Julia joined the team in 2020. With a degree in hospitality management, she brought more strengths to the table. “Julia has been instrumental in the day-to-day running of the store and she drives the digital side of the business, helping grow our online presence. Thanks to these efforts, social media and our website have become an essential part of what we do.” Thierig always ensures that all staff members have their own niche and really embrace it. “We’re all passionate about cooking and baking, but for instance, one staff member is more of an expert in baking and the other knows more about the tableware. Julia and I do most of the ordering of products, but each employee is also committed to stock keeping and ordering products within their specific brand or product group. My JANUARY 2026 29

motto is: teamwork makes the dream work.” Thierig and her staff actively believe that going the extra mile doesn’t lie in grand gestures, but rather in everyday actions. “This comes naturally to all of us. We know our customers’ names, not after the 100th time they’ve visited, but perhaps after just one visit. Remembering their name or what they bought makes them feel seen and special. “We’re always thinking alongside the customer: What do they need? What are they looking for? What problem do they encounter in their kitchen? Our customers feel our genuine interest and are therefore more inclined to make a purchase,” Thierig explains. “However, shopping is not just about purchasing something, but rather a valuable moment of contact. It’s an opportunity to create a positive experience.”
Beyond the bricks and mortar Balthazar’s approach to engaging with customers online was another key distinction that contributed to its gia win. “Just as we do in the store, we don’t just focus on selling products; we prioritise inspiring people. For instance, every Sunday we share a free recipe that’s created, tested and photographed in-house, showcasing products available in our store.” Balthazar’s social media channels have strong engagement and the team posts daily. “We stay true to ourselves online and the result is a unique feed that truly captures the Balthazar atmosphere,” Thierig notes. 30 giftguideonline.com.au

“Our main goal isn’t chasing likes or follower counts—it’s about telling the story of Balthazar. We do this by showcasing our products in real, inspiring settings that highlight both their purpose and styling potential. All posts, stories and reels are created in-house, allowing us to maintain a consistent look and feel across all channels.” When sourcing new products and ideas on work trips, Thierig and the team take their followers along for the ride, sharing hidden gems from trade fairs and adding favourite places to eat and shop in cities such as Paris and Chicago. “Our community really values these behindthe-scenes moments and we love that they feel like they’re there with us on the journey. It helps to foster personal connections with customers, making them feel truly involved,” she says.
Emotive retailing and staying true to yourself “If there’s one thing we learned during the pandemic, it’s that shopping isn’t something people plan. It’s impulsive and emotionally driven,” Thierig says. “You can order anything you want online at any time, but people still want to see, touch and feel items. They want to walk into a store and be inspired by what they see, have a chat with the people working there and immerse themselves in the atmosphere. That’s what shopping is truly about.” As any business owner will attest, running a company is a constant learning curve. “Luckily, retail is a field where many people come together—suppliers, representatives, customers—and if you listen carefully, there’s something you can learn from everyone,” Thierig says. “Listening to customers is of course very important; knowing what they want. Suppliers and representatives can teach you how to do business and what to sell. But most importantly, listen to yourself. Focus on what you like and what you want to do and be unique. See what is happening out there and adapt, while still staying true to yourself.” G To learn more about Balthazar Kookwinkel, visit balthazarkookwinkel.nl. Kine body cloths
WIPING OUT THE WAR ON WASTE Mark Yates’ goal is simple: to become Australia’s benchmark for sustainable personal care, showing that quality and environmental responsibility can truly go hand in hand.
K
ine began with a clear ambition: to reimagine everyday wipes with greater integrity and care. Mark Yates started Kine Australia in 2024 and the first product was launched in early 2025—a certified flushable range of plant-based and dermatologisttested body cloths that break down naturally in 180 days. The idea came from noticing just how much plastic was hidden in everyday wipes and how many of them were being made overseas, filled mostly with water from unknown sources, then shipped halfway around the world, he explains. 36 giftguideonline.com.au
“It felt increasingly out of step with what families actually wanted: safe ingredients, trusted manufacturing and a lighter environmental footprint,” Yates notes. “That gap is what sparked Kine—a commitment to making highquality, plant-based wipes here in Australia, with full transparency and far less environmental impact.” Indeed, most conventional wipes are made with hidden plastics, petroleum-based fibres and chemical preservatives that aren’t always disclosed on the label. While they may seem convenient, these materials resist natural decomposition and can irritate sensitive skin. Many are also produced offshore, generating substantial carbonintensive transport emissions. Together, these factors expose the hidden cost of traditional wipes: compromised skin health, reliance on non-renewables and a supply chain that amplifies environmental impact long after use. “Each Kine cloth is made from 100 per cent plant-based cellulose fibres derived from sustainably sourced wood pulp. The material has been engineered to feel soft like fabric but strong enough for
eco
everyday use, then disintegrate safely after disposal. They’re certified flushable under the Australian and New Zealand Standard (AS/NZS 5328), so they break down naturally without leaving microplastics behind. The body cloths are versatile—perfect for travel, post-workout refreshes, quick clean-ups when a shower isn’t possible or a toilet paper replacement,” he adds. A certified-flushable body cloth that does more than cleanse, it’s engineered with renewable cellulose fibres that disperse safely in water, reducing blockages, clogs and environmental impact. Dermatologically tested, hypoallergenic and pH balanced, it’s gentle on skin yet strong enough for everyday use. Infused with botanicals including jojoba, chamomile and vitamin E, each cloth refreshes and soothes, offering a hygienic alternative whenever water and soap aren’t available. Available in regular and travel sizes, Kine adapts to every routine—from workdays and workouts to weekends away. Both deliver the same soothing, plant-based clean, with flexible subscription options available so you’ll always have the right size on hand when you need it most. Made in Australia, Kine is free from plastic, parabens, sulphates and alcohol. Designed for modern routines and sustainable living, it delivers cleansing with confidence, care and a lighter footprint. “Sustainability isn’t a side project for us—it’s built into every decision we make. Our materials are renewable wherever possible, the wipes are plastic-free and our manufacturing is done locally in South Australia to reduce transport emissions.” Kine founder Mark Yates
Kine body cloths
By manufacturing and assembling locally each cloth supports jobs while avoiding the higher emissions of offshore production. Independent reporting, commissioned by Cleanlife, confirms that local assembly reduces each pack’s greenhouse gas emissions by around 50 per cent, cutting total lifecycle emissions by 12 to 16 per cent. Responsible composting further lowers endof-life emissions by two-thirds—delivering an overall 20 per cent reduction across the full product lifecycle. Even at the transport stage, Kine minimises its footprint by choosing sea freight over air freight for international supplies—cutting emissions by about onethird and reinforcing its commitment to make everyday care better for people and the planet. “Keeping production in Australia means we can stand behind the quality of every pack we make. It also means supporting local jobs, local innovation and a more sustainable
manufacturing ecosystem. There’s a level of transparency and trust that comes with local production that you simply can’t replicate offshore,” Yates admits. “We work only with suppliers and partners who meet strict environmental criteria and every stage of the process is reviewed with that lens. It’s about reducing impact at every level, not just claiming sustainability at the end of the line.” Specifically on the packaging, it’s one of the toughest challenges in this category and the brand is completely transparent about that. “We’ve tested every plastic-free and compostable packaging option currently on the market, but none have been able to hold the moisture required to keep wipes safe, stable and effective over time. It’s an industrywide limitation, not a lack of intention. That said, we review new materials constantly—if a viable, durable, non-plastic option emerges, we want to be one of the first brands to adopt JANUARY 2026 37
eco
it. Until then, we use minimal, fully recyclable packaging while continuing to push for better solutions.” While feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, there is a small but vocal minority that was burnt by claims of companies that their products were flushable, when they really weren’t in around 2019. “So many appreciate the peace of mind that comes with the flushability certification—it’s clear that trust in this category has to be earned and we’re proud that people are seeing the difference once they actually try them. “If I could go back in time I would have invested more time upfront in educating people about the new flushability standards,” he adds. “For years, the category suffered from products that claimed to be ‘flushable’ but didn’t break down properly and that memory still sticks with a lot of consumers. When we launched, we were fully certified under the AS/NZS 5328 standard but many people understandably didn’t know that the rules had changed. If I could go back, I’d make education a bigger part of our launch strategy, helping people understand that today’s certified flushable products are very different to what caused issues in the past. The more clarity people have, the more confident they feel choosing better options.” Kine Australia is a wellness brand built on the belief that everyday care should do good—for people, for families and for the planet. With its minimalist, premium aesthetic, Kine positions wellness as both practical and purposeful—wellness today isn’t just about fitness or beauty, it’s about simplicity and peace of mind. People are becoming more conscious of what they put on Kine body cloths
Kine body cloths
their skin and how their choices impact the environment. Kine taps into that by creating products that feel good to use and do good beyond that single moment. It’s about making wellness practical, turning something as everyday as a wipe into an act of care that’s both personal and responsible. “Our primary customers are individuals who want a clean, convenient way to stay fresh throughout the day—people using the cloths after the gym, during travel at work or simply as part of their everyday bathroom routine. They value products that feel premium, perform well and fit seamlessly into busy lifestyles. We also attract customers who are actively looking for sustainable alternatives to traditional wipes and care about choosing Australian-made products. “The reason we focus on this group is because they’re the ones who immediately recognise the benefits of a better-made wipe. They’re not just buying for convenience—they want quality, skinfriendliness and reassurance that the product aligns with their values. By designing for people who expect more from everyday essentials, we can deliver a product that feels purposeful, not disposable and build a brand that resonates with how people actually live and move through their day,” Yates comments. “We’re continuing to expand thoughtfully. Our next launch is baby wipes, made with the same plant-based materials and local manufacturing ethos. We’re also exploring compostable packaging technologies to push our sustainability even further.” G 38 giftguideonline.com.au

At Splosh, trend awareness isn’t an afterthought; it’s the heartbeat of the brand.
F
ounded in 1999 by Kim and Mike Kendall, Splosh began as a small family business crafting handmade timber gifts in the garage of their Brisbane home and selling them at local Sunday markets. From these humble beginnings, the brand has grown into an iconic Australian name, known for creating high-quality, on-trend products that delight home décor lovers and celebrate life’s meaningful moments, all while retaining its family-owned values and commitment to creativity. Stepping into the role of managing director in 2018, Laura Colman—daughter of founders Kim and Mike—has always believed in balancing a rich understanding of Splosh’s heritage as a leading homewares, décor and gifting brand with the ever-changing landscape of the Australian retail market. “With trend information accessible everywhere, being on-trend is only the beginning,” she says. “Over the years, we’ve learned to transform trends into innovative, meaningful products that give our stockists a real point of difference in their store.” Splosh brings together big-picture forecasting with every day, on-the-ground insights direct from its customers in-store. From annual global sourcing trips and international gift fairs to hands-on retail days, the design team is constantly absorbing the biggest drivers that influence the modern Australian customer. This approach allows them to always keep their finger on the pulse of product trends and innovation. The team of dedicated area sales managers also play a strategic role, reporting on weekly in-store observations that helps the team spot shifts as they emerge. “This year, homewares and gifts will continue to celebrate beloved natureinspired icons,” explains product manager Rebecca Hyman, who pulls the insights together. “From highland cows to bees and hens, shoppers are seeking playful, comforting designs with personality.” With Splosh collections designed up to a year in advance, reacting to trends after they appear simply isn’t enough. intention and deliver ranges that feel fresh and relevant for its customers. At the core, great ideas don’t just come from watching the market—they come from its people. Each quarter, Splosh runs a ‘Big Ideas Submission’, where everyone in the business across all departments collaborate and get creative in submitting ideas for new products and collections. These ideas are reviewed, discussed and genuinely considered, giving the entire team a chance to help shape what the brand creates. They then move into ‘Design Week, an energetic, multiday creative sprint where digital designers, product leaders and creatives come together in one room. Ideas are sketched, refined and signed off in real time. It’s fast-paced, collaborative and full of momentum, ensuring the ranges feel cohesive, inspired and ready to delight Australian shoppers. More recently, Splosh has expanded this creative lens beyond its in-house offering by partnering with a curated selection of international distribution brands, each carefully chosen to fill gaps in the Australian market and respond to emerging global trends. Bringing these brands to Australia isn’t just about introducing great products; it’s about presenting them in ways that resonate with shoppers. From campaign imagery that mirrors the Aussie lifestyle to seasonal launches, Splosh ensures every touchpoint feels relevant and fresh across its portfolio of brands including WoodWick, Mary Meyer, Heathcote & Ivory, Bomb Cosmetics, SnuggUps, Toasty Hugs, Life Charms, Out of the Blue, Trixie & Milo, The Soi Co and Yankee Candle Auto. But trends don’t exist in isolation—they happen within the broader backdrop of retail and the Australian retail landscape has changed significantly in recent years. Post-Covid, consumers have developed a strong preference for shopping locally, choosing to support small and independent retailers who offer personal service, curated product selections and genuine connection. The expectation for sales interactions to feel personal rather than transactional has never been stronger. This shift aligns closely with how the team operates at Splosh. Its sales structure is built around relationships, service and understanding the realities of retail. With a team of 15 on-the-ground area sales managers, each hired for their strong backgrounds in retail and frontline customer experience, Splosh is deeply embedded in the industry.
Their insights are invaluable, offering real-time market feedback, clarity on evolving shopper behaviours and a constant open line of communication with its stockists. It is this connection and dedication to partnering with the stockists to grow their sales both in-store and online, that gives Splosh a competitive advantage in recognising emerging product opportunities early. Its commitment to a full-service support model is the driving factor in helping stockists grow their businesses. Splosh is fully dedicated to arming its customers with every resource they need to succeed. A key part of this support comes from its in-house area sales managers, who work closely with retailers through regular store visits, hands-on merchandising assistance and personalised guidance tailored to each store’s unique opportunities. Their on-the-ground insight ensures stockists feel supported, informed and confident in their product selection. A key element of the Splosh sales model is accessibility. “We have purposely structured our ranges and order requirements to support independent retailers, ensuring they can trial new products with confidence,” says Sally Boyes, general manager. “With low minimum order quantities across all brands and categories, stockists can introduce new trends and test new ideas with minimal risk. Depth of product is kept attainable, price points remain competitive and every retailer has full access to our team for ongoing support.” All this forms part of Splosh’s dedication to partnering with customers—not just supplying them. The company works alongside retailers with sell-through strategies, visual merchandising advice, product selection recommendations and tailored solutions that make a meaningful impact at the store level. Whether it’s developing in-house collections or bringing international brands to Australia, the goal remains the same: to merge global inspiration with local expertise. Both sides of Splosh are fuelled by the same approach—observing what’s happening worldwide, understanding what matters locally and translating these insights into products and experiences that feel fresh, meaningful and connected to Australian shoppers. By combining creative forecasting, a strong sales model, industry expertise and a commitment to supporting independents, Splosh continues to deliver ranges that are aligned with what shoppers want today and tomorrow. A DOLL’S PURPOSE Why dolls can be more than just a toy while making a difference in a child’s life.
Giving Mission Dolls
Green says that unlike other ‘give-back’ businesses that simply pledge funds, this model ensures that physical, tangible items are purchased and passed directly to reputable charities. “This transparency builds trust—customers can see the donations being purchased and delivered to various charities via photos and videos that we share on social media, the website and through mailouts. “The Giving Mission is important because it provides tangible, immediate support to those who need it most. Every doll sold results in the donation of a new essential item to a child entering emergency foster care or experiencing hardship. These items offer comfort, dignity and reassurance during what is often a deeply unsettling time. The mission is embedded into the product itself, ensuring that giving back is consistent, transparent and impactful.” Australian consumers are increasingly values-driven and supportive of locally founded, socially responsible brands. Rag dolls also have timeless appeal and are often chosen for their softness, durability and emotional connection. Combined with the clear giving component, the dolls resonate strongly with Australian families who want to teach children empathy and kindness through everyday choices.
T
he Giving Mission Dolls are a range of rag dolls designed to offer both comfort and impact. With every doll sold, a new essential item is donated to a child or person in need—transforming a beautiful gift into one that has a flow-on effect for the community. The range started out as a passion project for director Jane Green, something she had been thinking about for several years. “This is a range I created myself,” she says. “I wanted to design a product that allowed customers to make conscious gifting choices without additional cost or effort. I know that many people want to support charities but aren’t always in a position to donate directly—this range makes it possible to give a beautiful gift while also helping someone else in need.” Each doll represents kindness, connection and the belief that small choices can make a meaningful difference. “For example, for every Amelia rag doll purchased, we donate an item of clothing to a child entering emergency foster care. With every Charlotte or Charlie doll purchased, we will provide meals to underprivileged children and families. Every doll has its own unique mission, allowing customers to choose whether they’re guided by the doll they’re drawn to or the cause that resonates most with them.” 50

“Besides parents, grandparents and giftgivers who value thoughtful, meaningful products, the range also strongly resonates with socially conscious consumers, customers seeking purposeful gifts for children and retailers who want to offer products with a clear story and impact behind them. “Retailers benefit from a product that combines strong emotional storytelling with commercial appeal. The Giving Mission Dolls stand out in a crowded gifting market because they deliver more than just a product—they offer purpose. Customers increasingly seek out brands that align with their values and this range gives retailers an easy, authentic way to meet that demand while supporting a meaningful cause,” Green notes. Looking ahead, the team remains focused on developing and sourcing products that are genuinely aligned with their values of social and environmental impact. “Our hope is that the Giving Mission Dolls will continue to thrive, so that we can expand the range of dolls and collaborate with additional charities to support the Giving Mission Dolls

Dolls that change lives Making a difference in her own way, Gold Coast entrepreneur Stella Beckett is redefining what dolls mean for children with her innovative brand Diary Dolls, a collection of plush companions that go far beyond play to help children build confidence, resilience and self-love. “Dolls are so much more than toys,” the founder and CEO says. “They can be trusted friends, role models and guides. With Diary Dolls, we’ve created characters that don’t just sit on a shelf, they actively help children develop daily habits that nurture their emotional wellbeing.” As a mother and passionate advocate for children’s wellbeing, she saw a gap in the market for purposeful products that combine play with personal growth. Every Diary Doll is intentionally designed to be both comforting and meaningful. Beckett’s creations are soft enough to hug during moments of anxiety, strong

enough to become a daily companion and purposeful enough to encourage emotional growth. Children form genuine bonds with their dolls, whispering secrets, practising affirmations and leaning on them during difficult moments. When she launched Diary Dolls, she poured every dollar she had into the venture. With no investors, no financial cushion and no guaranteed pathway for success, she pushed forward driven only by belief in her mission. She wanted to build what she wished she had growing up: a comforting companion who helps children express their feelings, strengthen their self-worth and build resilience through play. “The benefits of Diary Dolls go well beyond entertainment. At a time when childhood anxiety and low self-esteem are rising, the dolls offer a gentle, playful way to help children strengthen their emotional foundations.” By pairing journaling with a plush companion, Diary Dolls encourage children to express their feelings openly and safely, helping them to develop emotional literacy from an early age. The daily affirmations and guided prompts introduce habits that reframe negative thinking patterns, teaching children to shift their focus from self-doubt to self-belief. “Even five minutes a day with Diary Dolls can help children learn powerful life skills,” Beckett explains. “They discover how to calm themselves when they’re upset, how to celebrate their wins and how to keep trying when things

get tough. These are skills that build resilience and carry through to school, friendships and family life.” What began as a single affirmation doll created at Beckett’s dining table has grown into a powerful, fast-expanding brand that continues to resonate deeply with families. Parents say the dolls provide comfort during difficult phases, help children open up about emotional challenges and grow confidence in everyday life. Many describe the dolls as transformational rather than merely sentimental, tools that help children communicate when words feel too hard. Beckett often describes her younger self as a child who felt invisible and unheard. Those early experiences of hurt and isolation stayed with her well into adulthood, but everything changed when she became a mother and realised she never wanted her children or any child to feel the same way she once did. “Once I had my own children, I knew something had to change. I didn’t want any child to feel as alone as I once did. I wanted to build tools that give children emotional safety, resilience and a voice during the moments they need it most.” Diary Dolls are designed for parents and carers of children aged four to 10 years who want more than just play—they want purposeful products that nurture growth. These families value emotional wellbeing, resilience and confidence and they’re seeking practical, engaging tools that fit into everyday routines. Boutique toy and gift stores are also key customers, stocking Diary Dolls to offer parents unique, mindful products that stand out from traditional toys. The brand appeals to parents who believe in investing in their child’s self-love and to retailers who want to align with brands that champion positive, value-driven play. Beckett was recently named the 2025 Gold Coast Bulletin Women of the Year Award winner for retail, a milestone not only for her, but for every child who has ever felt different, unsure or alone, she says.

“This award is deeply personal. It celebrates the little girl I used to be and every child who deserves to feel brave, loved and supported. Diary Dolls started as a way to heal my own past, but today it has become a movement far bigger than me.” Indeed, Diary Dolls has grown from a one-woman dream into a thriving Gold Coast-based retail brand capturing national attention. Beckett continues to build on her vision by expanding the product range to include new dolls and toys designed for both girls and boys, ensuring children of all backgrounds and personalities have access to emotional support tools throughout every stage of their youth. The business is gaining momentum through heartfelt community support, growing demand from parents and increasing interest from boutique retailers and early childhood professionals. Beckett’s days often begin before sunrise and stretch long into the evening, juggling motherhood, product development and hands-on involvement in every aspect of her business. She personally connects with families, packs orders and delights in designing tools that help children feel stronger and more confident. Her next chapter involves collaborating with wellbeing experts and bringing Diary Dolls to more children across Australia and eventually the world. “The vision for Diary Dolls is to expand beyond its initial dolls into a wider range including unisex designs, to ensure every child has access to playful tools that build emotional wellbeing.” G
Is AI technology taking over the world of toys?

TREND ALERT
FROM AI TO CREATIVITY
Get inspired by AI technologies that are redefining play and creative approaches to greater mindfulness.
T
wo key trends have been identified that will impact the toy industry in 2026. While the first trend, AI loves (to) play, demonstrates how innovative technologies are reshaping play, the second trend, creative mindfulness, focuses on creative approaches towards mindful experiences. Let’s dig a little deeper.
New interactions when playing in play Artificial intelligence has been an integral part of our daily lives already, from digital voice assistants and personalised recommendations to smart devices at home. Now, this technology is also conquering the world of toys. With the trend, AI loves (to) play, products that can do much more than just react are now taking centre stage. They recognise individual preferences, support children in solving tasks, tell stories and evolve alongside their young users. From adaptive robots and talking play figures to intelligent learning systems, modern AI toys create a new, interactive play experience that combines both technology and imagination. Plus, many AI toys work without a display, reducing the screen being in the focus. Play always reflects society and today AI is already a part of it. AI loves (to) play trend doesn’t mean abandoning the joy of traditional play, but enhancing it with new layers of 56

interaction, personalisation and learning. While the market is still maturing, the growth potential is significant. The opportunity lies in designing unique experiences that sustain consumer interest and open new business avenues. One of the driving forces behind this trend is the fusion of the physical and digital, known as phygital play. AI acts as an invisible connector, allowing robots, dolls or board games to interact with apps and digital environments. This bridge between the tangible and the digital manifests in products like interactive robots, smart educational toys and apps that enhance the experience, showing how AI can add value to the physical through personalised digital layers. Examples include dolls that engage in contextual conversations, board games offering challenging opponents or robots whose physical behaviour is linked to mobile apps. These toys cease to be passive objects and become dynamic companions that combine touch, body expression and digital stimuli. For manufacturers and retailers, the physical-digital hybridisation with AI extends the lifecycle of products. Toys do not just stay on the shelf; they can be updated with new content, opening doors to complementary services and strengthening family loyalty. These products become toys with high added value, offering more interaction, personalisation and extended longevity through digital updates. Although currently aimed primarily at families seeking innovation, the real challenge for the sector is to understand how the physical-digital fusion with AI can inspire new business models, generate additional revenue and maintain relevance in a globally competitive market. The key question is: how can a toy be transformed into an evolving ecosystem that accompanies families beyond the moment of purchase? The development of AI-driven toys will require new design approaches, alliances with tech startups, user experience experts and specialists in safety or pedagogy. This shift in approach not only addresses the challenge of AI but also paves the way for a new era of innovation in the toy industry. For retailers, manufacturers and suppliers worldwide, this is the moment to decide whether to lead the trend or merely observe it. Children and adults are ready and waiting to play with AI. The challenge for the toy industry now is to catch up.
Creativity and mindfulness as an experience As a counterpoint to digital innovation, the creative mindfulness trend focuses on the conscious experience of creativity and

FOR THE LOVE OF DOGS We chat to Kath Peters, founder of Oodle Nation, who created a brand where science meets luxury, focusing on long term skin and coat health while maintaining a luxury feel and positioning.
D
ogs really are man’s best friend and it’s no secret that if you have a dog, they become part of the family and nothing’s too good for your little bundle of fur including food options and a bit of pampering. Oodle Nation founder Kath Peters tapped into a gap in the market with the launch of Australia’s first luxury dog‑care brand designed exclusively for oodle breeds. Born from a genuine love for her two mini groodles, Oodle Nation was created to solve what every oodle owner knows all too well: constant matting, irritation and costly grooming that rarely fixes the root of the problem. “Oodle Nation began out of pure frustration,” she says.

Prebiotic shampoo and conditioner
“My own oodles, Milo and Bailey, were constantly scratching and no matter how many ‘sensitive’ or even ‘oodle-specific’ products I tried, nothing actually soothed their skin or improved their coat. I realised the industry was focused on perfume, quick fixes and clever marketing, not long-term skin health. “When I discovered how effective prebiotics were at supporting the skin’s natural balance, it completely changed everything. After a year of formulating and testing, we launched in September 2025 with one goal: to create products that genuinely work for oodles and their wide range of coat types.” Oodle Nation isn’t just about grooming, it’s a lifestyle movement for dog owners who value style, wellness, community and a bit of luxury. Loved across Instagram for its before‑and‑after transformations, the brand has quickly become the go‑to for pet parents seeking premium, feel-good solutions that genuinely work. “Owners tell us their dogs are softer, less itchy and so much more comfortable. Groomers notice healthier skin and easier brush-outs after consistent use of our prebiotic shampoo and conditioner. “My favourite comments are always the ones that say, ‘this is the first product that’s actually made a difference’. There’s no hiding in the oodle community. Their dogs are their family and they want the best for them. I can honestly say that I have achieved that — creating the best product on the market for our oodles and the community feedback and support has been amazing.”
Luxury slicker brush
Oodle Nation’s current spa-inspired range is all about nourishing the skin and coat for long term results. The brand uses a skin-supporting prebiotic complex paired with soothing botanicals like aloe, oat oil and calendula to keep coats hydrated, balanced and beautifully defined. It’s a simple, premium system with clean formulas, gorgeous scent profiles and results that get better the more you use them. “Oodles have sensitive skin and highmaintenance coats and the products we use on them really matter. Our prebiotic shampoo and conditioner have been game changers for pups with irritation or dryness and our luxury slicker brush has become a customer favourite. “ Each pin on the brush has a tiny, rounded ball at the tip, making brushing gentle enough for anxious or sensitive dogs but still effective for detangling curls and managing knots.
These accessories aren’t about indulgence, they’re about comfort, effectiveness and supporting the wellbeing of a breed with genuinely unique needs, Peters explains. “The luxury slicker brush has been such a standout product of this collection. We’ve had so many owners tell us their pups went from wriggling and hating brush time to literally falling asleep mid-groom. That’s the difference the right tool makes. “We take a skin-first approach, which is surprisingly rare in dog grooming. Instead of relying on heavy perfumes or ingredients that give ‘quick shine’, we’re focused on strengthening the skin barrier and supporting the natural microbiome. That’s where our prebiotic technology really shines. Plus, everything about the brand, from the luxury minimalist packaging to the gentle formulations feels elevated, modern and considered. All our formulas are proudly made in Australia in small batches.” Oodle Nation resonates with the growing shift towards ethical, Australian small businesses that solve real lifestyle needs with integrity and social media has helped the brand build a community, not just a customer base. “Oodle owners love learning, asking questions and sharing photos of their freshly groomed pups, so platforms like Instagram let us educate while also having fun. It’s where we share behind-the-scenes updates, celebrate transformations and talk openly about skin health in a way that’s approachable and real. It also lets me show up as a founder and share the ‘why’ behind the brand, which has been a huge part of building trust and connection.” Peters says that while her heart will always be with oodles as that’s where her expertise and passion lie, the brand’s products naturally suit many other breeds, especially those with sensitive skin. “While we’ll stay proudly oodle-led in branding, we welcome every pup who benefits from our formulas and tools. We’re always delighted when a non-oodle becomes an Oodle Nation fan. All dogs deserve to have such high-quality products in their homes.” Oodle Nation will always stay rooted in skin health and science but expect to see the brand evolve into a full lifestyle experience for oodle owners who want the very best, she enthuses. “We have such an exciting year ahead. We’re launching our first dog perfume—a soft, elegant scent that’s completely dog-safe and designed to complement our spa range. We’re also expanding into more stylish, functional accessories that feel beautiful in your home and perform exceptionally well.” G JANUARY 2026 65

INTO THE WILD
New Aussie-owned cooler company launches in time for summer adventures.
L
ast year Australians took 15.2 million caravan and camping trips and now with the days growing warmer and longer, everyone is planning and preparing for a new season of getaways. The Caravan Industry Association of Australia recently released its 2025 Consumer Sentiment Report, revealing that 88 per cent of respondents plan to caravan or camp in the next year. To help make sure your gear is built for the task, Aussie-owned brand Kodiak has just launched, offering a collection of hard coolers and insulated drinkware designed to keep the food and drinks chilled throughout those action-packed days and nights. Its line of premium coolers and drinkware blends strength and style, making it suitable for all activities from beach days to bushwalks, backyard barbecues to camping trips and all the small activities in between. Kodiak was born from a simple frustration: outdoor gear had become overengineered, overpriced and underwhelming in real-world durability. Australians needed something tougher, gear that could survive our heat, salt, dust and distance between destinations, explains co-founder Simon Burnett. “We set out to build hard coolers and drinkware that were genuinely rugged,

beautifully designed and purpose-built for the wild, not just the catalogue,” he says. “That meant five-day cold insulation, leakproof and waterproof construction and UV-resistant materials, all backed by a five-year warranty to show we mean it. Kodiak exists to make adventures easier, longer and better remembered.” All Kodiak gear is made under strict quality control, every design decision, test and standards are led right here at home. Australia is one of the toughest testing grounds in the world. If your gear isn’t built properly, it shows. Kodiak was engineered precisely for these conditions—intense UV, long summer days, remote travel and a culture that expects products to take punishment and last. “With our five-day insulation, fully sealed designs, UV-resistant materials and rugged construction backed by a five-year warranty, Kodiak meets the standard Australians demand. Add to that a design language that feels fresh, bold and modern and Kodiak is positioned to thrive across beaches, bush tracks, campsites, worksites and everywhere life outdoors happens,” Burnett adds. “Kodiak stands out because we ‘designed’ every product, not just built product. Everything is designed around real conditions, not just pretty renderings. Our hard coolers

deliver up to five-day cold insulation, reinforced rugged construction, smooth-edge hygiene-safe interiors and full leakproof and waterproof sealing. They’re built to take a beating whether on a worksite, a dusty track or a scorching beach and still perform all whilst looking beautiful. Features like integrated bottle openers, drain screws, UV protection and theft-protection points show our commitment to practical, intelligent design. Pair that with bold colourways and timeless aesthetics and Kodiak offers durability with personality. And did we mention, we’re 100 per cent Australian owned?” Indeed, with glowing reviews from publications such as Vogue, Herald Sun, Man of Many and Mindfood, Kodiak fills a gap in the market with a product that focuses on performance, performance and more performance. “It’s understandable why consumers immediately gravitate to the bright, distinctive colours, but what keeps them talking is the performance,” Burnett enthuses. “We consistently hear that the coolers stay cold far longer than expected, feel unbreakable and are engineered with the sort of details people usually only find on premium international brands, yet at an attainable price point. “Retail partners, media and early adopters have echoed the same message: Kodiak fills a gap Australia has been waiting for—gear that is rugged, reliable and ready for real adventures.” G

PAPERBACK HERO Giftguide chats to three brands about why stationery products aren’t just fashionable items but rather companions that become a part of people’s day-to-day lives.

O
ver the years, Melbourne-based brand MiGOALS has steadily built a reputation as the global leader in pen-to-paper productivity. Inspired by the personal experiences of its founder Adam Jelic who saw a gap in the market for a planner that would help users break down big dreams into small, manageable steps, the stationery label was launched 15 years ago in Officeworks with six core SKUs and is now available in a majority of stores nationwide and has sold more than 1.25 million products worldwide. Global collaborations with leading brands include Apple, Canva, Square, Snapchat, L’Oreal, KX Pilates, F45 and Keep it Cleaner (KIC). “To see MiGOALS grow internationally has been incredibly satisfying,” says Jelic. “I am in awe of the impact MiGOALS has had on those who have achieved or are working towards their dreams. That has been and always will be our biggest achievement of all.” Indeed, the goal was never just to create a nice diary. From his initial dreams of becoming a professional athlete to his broader ambitions as an entrepreneur, Jelic’s journey is steadfastly rooted in the MiGOALS system of small daily achievements. His own struggles with fear of failure and mental health have made him an inspiring example of the power of consistency, daily routines and taking things one day at a time. “I wanted to use my own personal experiences with anxiety and lifebacks to build a system that would help people overcome self-doubt, stay accountable and make real progress towards their dreams. “Everyone has goals but the pathway to achieving them can often feel overwhelming. MiGOALS is about creating structure to give users a framework for action. Small daily wins are what will help you stay grounded and fight back against self-doubt when the going gets hard. Our ranges are all about empowering people to live with purpose and passion, no matter how big their dreams. “We love that we have created a tool that genuinely changes lives. We are helping everyday people find the focus, discipline and confidence they need to work towards their purpose in life. I could never have anticipated that what started as a bunch of scribbled notes and a DIY diary prototype would become recognised as the gold standard in pen-topaper productivity,” he adds. With the ethos of giving users the structure and visibility they need to work towards their goals, MiGOALS’ range of signature planners are intuitive, chic, minimalistic and designed for people who want to make things happen.
MiGOALS Jumble & Co
MiGOALS
“We believe that our diaries, notebooks, desk planners and journals aren’t just fashionable items but rather companions that become a part of people’s day to day lives and help them dream big and take daily action on turning their dreams into reality.” The brand has recently launched its collection of diaries, notebooks and accessories for 2026 featuring luxuriously crafted, feature-rich yet simply designed products in a versatile range of colours. Each MiGOALS product sports a premium finish complete with sections to help users ascertain their mood, set intentions, review their accomplishments and plan out daily tasks.
“Everyone has dreams and goals, but many never even get to the point where they could make these dreams a reality,” he notes. “If there’s one thing I learned in my 15 years at MiGOALS is that you have to commit to doing something every day if you want to make progress. Being able to see where you are going and how far you have come is the catalyst to growth and I believe that we should never stop growing.”
Exercise for the mind Jumble & Co by Collins Debden was created post-Covid with the rising pressures young people across the world are facing and the JANUARY 2026 75
brand is very passionate about providing accessible, offline tools for young adults and teens looking to reflect, set goals and improve their mental wellbeing. Its (recently expanded) In Two Minds journal collection is a dual-toned journal series designed to support young Australians in managing their mental health. With youth mental health emerging as one of the most urgent challenges in Australia today, the range has been created to provide young people with accessible tools for reflection, balance and emotional growth. “Young Australians are telling us that they feel the squeeze from every angle—academic pressure, financial stress and the ongoing weight of climate change and global uncertainty,” Breanna Jayne Sada, child and adolescent psychologist and Jumble & Co ambassador, says. “All of which is coming at them at an algorithmically-fast speed on social platforms. Journaling is like exercise for the mind. Putting thoughts on paper activates the brain’s problem-solving centre while calming the areas linked to stress. Gratitude journaling can lift mood, reflective journaling helps process experiences and goal setting builds motivation. Even five minutes a day can make the mind feel lighter.” The In Two Minds collection features four brand-new journals joining the completed range. Designed with split-tone pages and

covers, the collection represents the two sides of emotion, reminding us that balancing our feelings is an everyday act of resilience. Inside, the layout creates two spaces: one for calm reflection and one for messy, expressive release, showing how both sides of the mind work together to restore balance. “The split design of the In Two Minds range is symbolic of the balance we all seek within the binary of our creative and structured sides,” explains Shahrazz Hayat, CEO of Jumble & Co. “We want to provide young Australians with practical tools that are not only functional but also a source of comfort, inspiration and empowerment.” Jumble & Co also supports Lifeline Australia, with 10 per cent of sales from the online store donated directly to supporting suicide prevention services for Australians.

Ink Link Pass-Back Journal is a luxe guided journal designed to be passed between adults and children to build connection, writing skills and memories. The idea for the journal began as something very simple says founder Cia Kouparitsas, who was struggling to find real moments of connection with her kids in the rush of everyday life. Their conversations would skim the surface or happen late at night when everyone was tired, so she started passing a notebook back and forth with her daughter.
“I would write to her first, she would write back and something shifted,” she explains. “She opened up. She shared more than she ever did in conversation. Over time it became a ritual we both looked forward to. I kept thinking how many other families were probably craving the same sense of closeness and calm. I wanted to create a beautiful, luxe and intentional journal that made it easy for grown-ups and children to connect, understand each other and capture moments that would otherwise slip away.” Most journals are either for adults or children. The Pass-Back Journal is built for two. That alone sets it apart, says Kouparitsas. But it is the experience of passing it back and forth that families fall in love with. It becomes part journal, part secret game, part memory-maker. Every prompt has been intentionally designed and tested so children learn to express emotions, think deeply and practise writing skills, while adults get a rare window into their child’s inner world. It promotes personal growth, reflection and emotional intelligence without ever feeling like homework and made to be kept for years. “Parents often tell us it becomes one of their most treasured possessions. The feedback has been incredibly moving. One mum told me her dyslexic daughter had never willingly written anything before and now she writes in their Pass-Back Journal for fun. Seeing her confidence grow through writing has meant everything to them.

Pass Back Journal
Pass Back Journal
Pass Back Journal
“A divorced parent shared that it has become a special way to stay connected with their child when they are at the other home. It has travelled back and forth in school bags and become a small anchor in a tricky season. A FIFO dad uses it while he is away, writing entries in hotels and on planes so his daughter feels close to him even when he is on the other side of the country. “And then there was the grandmother who bought 12 in one go so she could give one to every grandchild for Christmas. She told us it was the first gift she had found that felt both meaningful and fun. What all of these stories have in common is this: families are craving connection and the journal gives them a simple way to create it.” Indeed, Kouparitsas believes Australian parents today are facing a real challenge. Screen time is higher than ever and many feel their kids are slipping further into digital worlds. At the same time, the recent social media restrictions for under-16s have left families searching for meaningful offline alternatives. “The Pass-Back Journal gives them exactly that and has been designed for kids aged six to 14. It offers connection, creativity and calm. It feels wholesome without being dull and fun without being frivolous. Kids enjoy it because it feels playful. Parents love it because it creates genuine moments of closeness and helps kids build confidence in how they think, feel and write. “It is the right product at the right time for families who want to replace some of that screen time with something that actually enriches their child’s world.” G

Travelers are favouring shorter trips over long holidays
ROAD TRIP Domestic travel including caravanning and camping is still very popular amongst Australians and recent research shows why it’s a growing market for retailers.
S
hifting patterns in caravan and camping travel behaviour have been revealed in the Caravan Industry Association of Australia’s 2025 Consumer Sentiment Report. “There is no doubt that travel behaviours have changed and continue to adapt in a post-Covid world where international travel has returned, economic pressures have intensified and climate considerations have emerged as significant factors influencing Australian consumers,” Caravan Industry Association of Australia general manager research and insights Peter Clay says. “The report shows that our consumers continue to remain optimistic about the future, yet we can’t ignore the fact that they are also challenged by cost-of-living pressures. “This contrast creates both challenges and opportunities for our industry. While Australians express caution about their financial futures, they simultaneously maintain strong positive sentiment toward caravan and camping experiences, seeing them as excellent value for money compared to other holiday options.” 80 giftguideonline.com.au
For the first time, the association asked about weather events’ impact on travel decisions and there is no doubt that weather-related incidents are continuing to influence travel behaviour. “These events now top the list of factors affecting travel planning, followed by cost-of-living concerns and fuel prices. We’re also seeing a clear shift towards shorter, more frequent trips rather than extended holidays, with more Australians planning to caravan and camp in the coming year but adapting how they travel. Rather than cancelling plans, consumers are seeking budget-friendly options, travelling in off-seasons, hunting for deals and staying closer to home.
Key insights in the report include: • Record-high travel intent: 88 per cent of caravan and camping consumers plan to travel in the next 12 months as consumers appear increasingly ready to invest in outdoor travel experiences. • Value perception remains strong: 77 per cent of travellers view caravan and camping trips as better value than other holiday types,

cost-of-living pressures (56 per cent) as the primary factor influencing travel decisions, with fuel prices coming in third at 39 per cent. The data reveals a dramatic shift in Covid-19 concerns, with only seven per cent of respondents now considering pandemic rates as a factor in their travel planning. This represents a significant decline from previous years, reflecting the evolving nature of the pandemic and its diminishing impact on travel behaviour. What was once a dominant consideration has now fallen to its lowest levels. Interest rates continue to play a role in travel decisions for 25 per cent of respondents. For younger respondents, natural weather events (67 per cent) and cost of living (59 per cent) are the primary considerations. In contrast, respondents aged 65 and over identify natural events (48 per cent) and fuel prices (42 per cent) as the most significant factors influencing future travel decisions.

while 76 per cent of respondents indicated that caravan and camping holidays in Australia offer good value for money, In contrast, only 50 per cent of respondents believed that domestic travel offers better value compared to international options. This perception may partly explain the rising interest in overseas trips. • Weather events are now a top consideration: for the first time, extreme weather events (64 per cent) have surpassed
• The short-stay shift: the association reports a clear trend toward shorter, more frequent trips rather than extended holidays, with 32 per cent of respondents planning one to three-night getaways, whilst trips lasting four to seven nights saw a two percentage point increase. Conversely, longer holidays have experienced a decline, with eight to 14 night trips decreasing to 10 per cent and extended holidays of 15+ nights dropping to 16 per cent compared to six months ago. These results indicate a trend towards shorter caravan and camping trips, with a shift away from longer stays. This shift may reflect changing consumer preferences, likely influenced by economic factors. This pattern aligns with the broader trend of Australian travellers adapting their holiday habits to manage costs while maintaining travel experiences. The significant increase in overall caravan and camping intention (88 per cent) demonstrates the sector’s continued appeal, particularly as consumers seek value-driven domestic travel options. • RV ownership trends show market changes: while overall RV ownership remains stable, intention to upgrade has decreased from 17 per cent to just nine per cent while plans to downgrade have fallen from about five to two per cent signaling important shifts in consumer purchasing behaviour. Over the past two years, RV owners have shown increasing stability in their overall ownership, with fewer considering selling their vehicles outright—a positive indicator of continued commitment to the lifestyle. However, examining recent trend data
Australians are still keen on outdoor adventures
reveals concerning declines in the intention to change RV types. This reduction in upgrade and downgrade intentions signals a potential slowdown in market activity and new purchases that could impact manufacturers, dealers and the broader industry. • Budget-conscious but traveldetermined: rather than cancelling holidays, Australians are adapting, with 81 per cent hunting for deals, 75 per cent travelling off-peak and 69 per cent seeking budgetfriendly parks. Recent survey data indicates a shift in respondents’ holiday and spending intentions, with the percentage of respondents intending to reduce their holiday budget dropping from 24 to 18 per cent. Simultaneously, there has been a significant increase in those planning to take more holidays, rising from 22 per cent in the July 2024 survey to 29 per cent in the latest poll. Moreover, the proportion of respondents intending to increase their travel expenses has grown by 10 percentage points over the past six months. Conversely, those planning to spend less on travel has decreased to 23 per cent. Latest survey findings show that respondents are actively managing their travel budgets in response to ongoing economic pressures. The most popular money-saving tactics include hunting for travel bargains (81 per cent), choosing offpeak travel seasons (75 per cent), selecting budget-friendly caravan parks (69 per cent),using loyalty programs (65 per cent), cutting other expenses to preserve travel funds (62 per cent) and embarking on shorter journeys (54 per cent). Notably, cancelling or delaying planned trips ranked as the least favoured approaches, indicating Australians prioritise travel experiences despite financial challenges. The significant increase in those booking closer to travel dates (from 37 per cent in previous survey to 45 per cent) and willing to travel shorter distances (from 44 per cent in previous survey to 54 per cent) demonstrates adaptation rather than abandonment of travel plans.G JANUARY 2026 81
