CHINA AND RUSSIA: DEEPENING POLITICAL TIES

24th February, 2022. A day etched deeply into the minds of every Ukrainian. A day signifying an ensuing year of struggle and bloodshed A day that would shock the international community to the core

On 24th February, 2022 tens of thousands of Russian troops stormed into the Ukraine capital; shockwaves reverberated around the world EU countries opened their doors, offering refuge to the thousands of Ukrainian citizens impacted by the invasion Food and energy prices started to escalate as people became more aware of the wider impact of the ensuing chaos

Days before the one year anniversary of the war, one of China’s top diplomats, Wang Yi, met with Russian President, Vladimir Putin in Moscow with Wang claiming that both countries were prepared to strengthen their strategic cooperation Earlier on Wednesday, Wang met Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, where he stated that they were looking forward to reaching a “ new consensus ” on the evolving relationship between the two allies

According to Putin, "new milestones" have been reached in sectors like bilateral trade, and RussianChinese ties are progressing as expected. Putin thanked China and stated that the two nations were collaborating collectively on international issues

Wang arrived in Moscow only a few days after US officials shared concerns over China’s alliance with Russia and the effect that it could have on the prevailing war in Ukraine and merely hours after President Putin’s speech where he declared that he would be terminating Russia’s participation in its last nuclear arms treaty with the US.

China professed neutrality in the conflict however, have proceeded to widen trade ties and conduct joint military exercises China also presented a 12-point proposal for resolving the violence in Ukraine, calling for peace negotiations and a regard for national sovereignty

The 12-point plan however failed to express demand for Russia to remove its forces from Ukraine or denounce the invasion Moreover, the document was received happily by President Putin with President Biden stating "[President] Putin's applauding it, so how could it be any good?"

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said there is also some distress that China will supply the Russian military with “lethal support” Warnings have also been issued by Blinken about the consequences that China will face if it decides to provide more support for Russia in this war.

The Implications of The Implications of Biden’s Secret Trip to Ukraine Biden’s Secret Trip to Ukraine

In a secretive visit to Ukraine, President Biden displayed a major show of support for the conflict-driven country, ‘reaffirming’ the US’s ‘unwavering and unflagging commitment’ to maintaining Ukraine’s sovereignty at the war ’ s one-year anniversary last month. Unscheduled and historic, this visit had more implications than simply a public demonstration of support from the United States or a boost in the troop’s morale. In a highly secretive operation, Biden reportedly had dinner with his wife in Washington, D.C. and later departed on Air Force One under the cover of darkness. He then took a train from the Polish border to reach the Ukrainian capital. Knowledge of his plan was so highly guarded that the President’s public schedule did not reflect the trip, and White House officials had repeatedly stated that a trip to Ukraine was not in the works.

Biden arrived in Kyiv just as Ukraine marked the Day of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred, which commemorates the lives lost by those who fought in anti-government protests in 2014the same year Putin annexed Crimea due to his concerns regarding Ukraine moving towards the West. The trip was called symbolic, with Biden stating that he ‘thought it was important that the President of the United States be here the day that the attack began.’ The visit was intended for ‘deconfliction purposes ’ , and as Biden strolled the streets of downtown Kyiv with Zelensky at his side, he announced plans for additional military aid as well as reinforced sanctions on companies and individuals supporting Russia’s war efforts. However, it is yet to ascertain whether his visit would be paving the way for peace in Europe or making the ongoing war more fatal.

The Implications of The Implications of Biden’s Secret Trip to Ukraine Biden’s Secret Trip to Ukraine

Nonetheless, so effective was the visit in garnering further support for Ukraine, that soon after news of his trip broke, Japan offered Ukraine financial assistance worth $5.5 billion and hosted a virtual meeting for G7 leaders and Zelensky on the official anniversary of the war. Meanwhile, Turkey announced that it would no longer be exporting products that could be used to bolster Russia’s war efforts. The German government also joined in the praise for Biden’s visit, calling it a ‘good signal’.

It is clear that Biden’s public show of support for Ukraine was an important moment in the timeline of the war - for Ukraine and internationally - as pressure builds to isolate Russia from the global economy. The visit was concluded with Biden’s moving homage to Ukraine’s fight for freedom: ‘ one year later, Kyiv stands. Ukraine stands. Democracy stands.’

January 28th, 2023 Before passing across Canada and eventu continental United States, China's surveillance balloon reached American airspace close to Alaska.

As stated by US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken - “We’re n this. We’ve already shared information with dozens of countri Washington and through our embassies We’re doing so becaus only target of this broader programme which has violated the five continents.”

Whether or not it was meant strategically, the shadow of the American aircraft projected against the balloon is a remarkable sight in the images released by the Pentagon It also clearly depicts the enigmatic, mysterious balloon with panels dangling below it

Last month, China admitted that it was the owner of the balloon that was visible above Venezuela, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and northern Colombia The balloon, which was being used for flight experiments, had "significantly strayed" from its intended route "by accident," according to Beijing at the time

The wreckage spread out across almost seven miles and fell in water that was about 47 feet deep, which was shallower than officials had anticipated Many ships were used in the recovery effort The recovery activities, according to the officials, would be finished in a matter of days rather than weeks. A salvage ship was on its way.

In light of this incident, the US military modified its radar settings to pick up smaller objects and identified three other unidentified aircraft that President Joe Biden ordered shot down; ranging from over Alaska to one over Canada China claimed that it had rights to “take further actions” and scrutinised the US for “ an obvious overreaction”, threatening international peace

In wake of this incident, it raises the question - How cognizant are countries that day-by-day military modernisation equips decision-makers and nations with additional assistance to advance the interests of their nation?

NEOM CITIES OF THE FUTURE

NEOM CITIES OF THE FUTURE

NEOM - the smart city, the city without roads and cars. NEOM is the future. NEOM is going to be an accelerator of human progress, representing the future of innovation in business and sustainability.

To give more of an explanation; NEOM is a new project meant to build an all-new city based on the most recent urban innovations, and although it's still barely laid it’s foundations, developers have guaranteed that their grand ideas are not devoured by the sands.

NEOM gets its name from the Greek prefix neo which means “ new ” and the ‘M’ comes from the first letter of the word ‘Mustaqbal’ which means future in Arabic. NEOM is said to be built in the Northwest of Saudi Arabia, and is said to be the size of Belgium! NEOM is claimed to be a place of innovations, creativity and for dreaming the impossible. It’s may be an entirely new way of living; sustainable living.

So what is in NEOM? NEOM’s got 4 different regions within it. The Oxagon is a floating industrial port, used to sell and trade goods across the Red Sea Its advanced manufacturing will jumpstart future industries Trojena is the first major skiing place in the Arabian Peninsula!

There’s Sindalah; one of NEOM’s many islands which is said to have luxury beaches, resorts and attractions Last but not least NEOM has ‘The Line’, a city said to be 170 km long built in the shape of… a line! The Line has no roads, no cars and no emission within it.

What makes NEOM different from other ambitious plans? NEOM uses solar power, wind energy, and green hydrogen NEOM will be one of the world's leading green hydrogen producers, as it is one of the few places in the world where it can be produced competitively and in large quantities Saudi Arabia's master plan is to increase non-oil related revenue and boost economic growth Not to mention, NEOM is also within easy reach of the world, as 40% of the world is only 6 hours away from NEOM!

If all these claims are true, then the world so desperately needs NEOM, because it needs change. NEOM can change the way the world does business, it can change the way we protect the planet and the way we live, for the better!

A Tool from the Heavens - ChatGPT

ChatGPT, or Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer, is an AI tool designed by OpenAI, which has designed other AI tools, the most notable of which was ChatGPT’s predecessor, InstructGPT

GPT is simply an AI learning algorithm trained to understand colloquial language and reply in such a way that humans can understand. But why has the world become so obsessed with this new learning tool?

AI has taken the world by storm over the past few years, but thanks to a few viral news reports and videos on social media, the world has learned to embrace this Chatbot and use it as part of their daily lives. ChatGPT has repeatedly been proven to answer questions found in high-school textbooks. An article published by PC Guide titled: “Can ChatGPT do my homework?”, asked the AI to answer textbook questions on physics and English, putting its problem-solving and essay-writing skills to the test. So it is clear that this bot can answer high-school-level homework, but more importantly, should it?

ChatGPT is certainly a learning tool designed to assist in simple tasks. However, using this software to write articles/essays is still plagiarism. Moreover, ChatGPT does not have all the answers, its abilities are still quite limited, and it’s still learning “So, how do I use ChatGPT correctly?” You may ask, here’s the answer:

The ability to use ChatGPT is becoming increasingly important as not only can it complete tasks as simple as homework, but it can also be used to plan schedules, meal prep for those who need to lose or gain weight, p so much more. ChatGPT can provide all of these things and do it in such an efficient way that it saves time and effort. However, depending on how someone interacts with this bot, the outcome may be different, the same as in any case with a normal human being The creators of ChatGPT allow users to give their bots an identity: personal trainer, tutor or even a CEO.

Unfortunately, OpenAI’s software is not available to people worldwide, including in Bahrain Here is a list of all of the other countries that banned the use of ChatGPT: Saudi Arabia, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kosovo, Iran, Egypt, China, Hong Kong, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Zimbabwe, Somalia, Somaliland, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Burundi, Réunion and Eswatini

This puts these countries at a severe disadvantage, not allowing them to utilise ChatGPT to their advantage This is due to some censorship laws in these countries However, basic virtual private networks allow users to access this bot.

In conclusion, ChatGPT is a reliable tool allowing millions worldwide to ease their daily tasks This is apparent in all of the viral social media platforms in which they advertise this software and state freely how it saves their time, money and effort.

Tik Tok: Entertainment Source or Malicious Virus?

Ever since it climbed up to the top in 2016, Tik Tok does not fail to fill up our time, and the world of endless scrolling and entertainment runs a rush of dopamine through our system with every new video we see.

Amid political tensions between China and the West, Canada launched an investigation into Tik Tok and the legitimacy of the app’s security. Canada believes that personal details of users are being disclosed in Beijing, which does not comply with the country’s privacy legislation.

This security concern became further in light after multiple states in the US, such as Mississippi and Wisconsin, ordered government staff to remove the app from all work devices.

Ironically, despite the app created in China, citizens in the country often have no access to it. Another app is used in replacement, known as Douyin. Even though it’s similar in design and functionality, both work on completely different networks, and users from each version cannot interact with each other.

Furthermore, research has found that over a third of users in the US may be 14 and under, despite the age limit for Tik Tok to be 13+. This has concerned both parents and government officials.

This is not the first time concerns have worsened the app’s reputation.

More research has shown that social media, particularly Tik Tok, has a significant effect on the reduction of attention spans. This prevents us from focusing on things that engage us less than the videos on Tik Tok, like studying or playing sports.

Concerns vary to more fatal trends that may encourage children to take part in harmful activities for entertainment. Such trends have been followed by lawsuits, as parents attempt to gain justice for their children.

Technology is growing fast. The endless and infinite boundary of our own creation is bigger than anything before, including ourselves. Only time will tell if this is a blessing or a curse.

How to Help Those Suffering From International Crises

In the last 5 years, the world has been made to endure and work through several obstacles. Between the Covid-19 pandemic, the climate crisis, and a series of natural disasters, we have certainly been exposed to a number of international crises.

Each of these crises; although very different, all require similar means of support. In a climate where unity is so important, it is crucial to offer help to those who need it during such difficult times.

The Turkey-Syria earthquake is one example of the many prevalent issues today. As a community, it is up to us to help combat the problems that have arised as a result of the aforementioned earthquake.

In times like this, where a vast number of people are suffering, it is natural to feel helpless. It is natural to wonder what you can do to support these people in the best way possible.

To offer some guidance, we have written a list of things you can do to help, and do your part:

1.

Make a Donation

Giving even a small donation makes a drastic difference in recovering from a crisis. Often, donations are needed to fund/provide necessities for those affected, as well as any reconstruction fees. Donations can range from money, food, hygiene products, and even pillows & blankets.

2.

Volunteer

Of course, this applies only for certain cases where volunteering is a viable option. Where international crises are concerned, there are usually ways to volunteer your time towards making a positive impact on other people’s lives. You can reach out to local embassies, to support the concerned country, or even contact online-based organisations to find ways you can help!

3. Be Aware

To support other people, it is crucial to understand what exactly it is that they are going through. By remaining up to date with the latest news, and keeping up with any progress, you are keeping yourself informed of what is happening This will allow you to find the best way to support those affected, and make a real difference.

The Implicit Gender Double Standards

“They'd say I hustled. Put in the work. They wouldn't shake their heads and question how much of this I deserve What I was wearing If I was rude. Could all be separated from my good ideas and power moves”

We've all heard of the term "double standard", but what does it actually mean? Simply put, a double standard is when a certain set of standards are applied differently to different people. In many cultures and societies around the world, the double standard is particularly apparent when it comes to women.

From an early age, women have been fighting a constant uphill battle when it comes to the unfair and often implicit double standards that are set against them. It starts from birth, when female babies are constantly scrutinised and shamed for any perceived wrongdoings or deviations from societal norms. The scrutiny does not end in childhood; rather, it follows them into adulthood, and stays with them their entire lives.

Throughout their lifetime, women are constantly faced with contradictory messages and expectations that lead to.frustration and feelings of being unheard. On the one hand, they are expected to excel in school, work hard and establish themselves professionally while still balancing family duties. On the other hand, they are constantly told they are too loud, bossy, and “not womanly” enough if they do. They can't wear certain clothes or do certain things in fear of judgement and scorn. Women are still seen as inferior, and in some cases, not even worthy of respect despite all the strides society has made over the last few decades.

For example, a man who is in a leadership role at work is seen as an ambitious and confident individual. However, if a woman takes on the same role, she may be labelled as aggressive and controlling. Additionally, in a job interview a man might be praised for having the confidence to put himself forward for the role, but if a woman did the same thing, she would be considered overly aggressive and maybe even too eager for the job.

12

The Implicit Gender Double Standards

It’s the implicit assumptions made from little actions that through different perceptions, differ between the genders. When a male does something, it’s calculative and smart whereas if a female does the same thing it’s manipulative. This is detrimental in our society, constantly pushing women back, placing obstacles in the way that men simply do not have to deal with. The gender double standard suggests that what is acceptable or suitable for one, is not for the other, demonstrating how different judgements are made between a male and a female, even when both execute the identical action.

What makes matters worse is that many women never realise the double standards that are placed on them, due to it being generationally ingrained into their outlook of life. The fact is that as long as these implicit double standards are still part of our culture and society, it’s our requirement to address and confront them.

In order for society to move forward, we must make it a priority to confront and end these double standards, and allow women the opportunity to be treated fairly. All women should be given the same opportunity to succeed and reach their full potential regardless of their gender, race, or economic status. This begins by shifting the conversation around women and by normalising respect and acknowledgement of their efforts. The sooner these changes are implemented, the more opportunity and security women will have in their everyday lives.

It's up to each of us to be aware of these implicit double standards and challenge them whenever they come up in conversation. Let's create a society that recognises women as the intelligent, capable individuals they are, instead of one that continues to see them as inferior to men.

International Women’s Day : How to Uplift the Women Around You

International Women's Day is a globally recognised day, celebrated annually on March 8th, that commemorates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It is also a day to raise awareness about the struggles that women face and to take action to promote gender equality. One way to do this is by uplifting and empowering the women in our lives. Here are some tips on how to uplift others on International Women's Day:

1. Recognize and celebrate their achievements

Take the time to acknowledge the achievements of the women in your life, whether it's a family member, friend, colleague, or mentor. This could be a small accomplishment like completing a task or achieving a milestone, or something more significant like receiving a promotion or starting a business. Let them know that their hard work and dedication is appreciated and valued. You could send them a thoughtful message, give them a small token of appreciation, or simply take them out for a celebratory lunch.

2. Listen and support

One of the most effective ways to uplift others is simply by listening to them and offering your support. Women often face unique challenges, such as workplace discrimination or balancing work and family responsibilities, as well as institutionalised sexism that can be difficult to navigate alone. Whether it's a friend who needs someone to talk to or a classmate who needs help with schoolwork or homework, being there for them can make a big difference. You could lend a listening ear, offer words of encouragement or provide practical assistance such as helping them find information or resources to overcome a challenge.

3. Speak up for gender equality

Finally, one of the most important things you can do to uplift others on International Women's Day is to speak up for gender equality. Gender inequality persists in many areas of life, including the workplace, education, and politics. By using your voice to raise awareness about these issues and advocating for policies that promote gender equality, you can help create a more just and equitable world. This could mean challenging sexist language or behaviour, supporting women's rights

organisations or participating in political campaigns that prioritise gender equality.

Remember, uplifting others doesn't have to be a grand gesture. Small acts of kindness and support can go a long way in making someone feel valued and empowered. Let's work together to uplift and empower the women in our lives, not just on International Women's Day, but every day.

4. Support Women-Owned Businesses

Another way to uplift women is by supporting businesses that are owned and operated by women. Women-owned businesses face unique challenges, such as limited access to funding and networks, that make it difficult for them to succeed. By choosing to buy from women-owned businesses, you can help these entrepreneurs overcome these barriers and grow their businesses. This could mean buying products or services from women-owned businesses in your community or recommending them to your friends and family.

5. Educate Yourself and Others

Education is a key tool in promoting gender equality. By learning about the experiences and perspectives of women, you can become a more informed and empathetic ally. This could mean reading books or articles written by women, attending workshops or seminars on gender equality or participating in online discussions about women's issues. You can also share what you learn with others to help raise awareness and promote understanding.

6. Take Action

Finally, taking action is crucial in creating lasting change for women. This could mean volunteering for a women's rights organisation, supporting political candidates who prioritise gender equality or participating in demonstrations or protests to raise awareness about women's issues. Whatever action you take, big or small, can make a difference in creating a more just and equitable world for women. In conclusion, International Women's Day is an important opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women and to take action to promote gender equality. By uplifting and empowering the women in our lives, supporting women-owned businesses, educating ourselves and others, and taking action, we can create a more just and equitable world for women.

The Future of the NBA

It seems like another long-standing record is broken every other day from most points to most assists to the all-time scoring record. Decade-old records are being shattered weekly! It leads us to wonder what exactly is causing this recent success and what the future holds for the NBA.

The NBA, or the National Basketball Association, is the highest tier of professional basketball held in the United States. Players from all over the world converge to bring us the best the sport can offer. Famous names throughout history have brought us some unbelievable records, from Micheal Jordan’s 7 consecutive scoring titles to Kobe Bryant’s astonishing 33,643 points as a guard, and Bill Russell’s historic 11 Championships. In the NBA’s 70-year history, fans have been treated to a 70-point game from 4 different players; however in 2023 alone 2 more have joined the list: Donavan Mitchell and Damian ‘Dame’ Lilliard. The real question is how? How are these players able to push themselves to these new heights?

It turns out that a combination of cutting-edge medicine and innovative training techniques are allowing players to break records faster than ever before. In recent times, doctors have been able to synthesise and use stem cells as a method of recovery for players. Stem cells are special cells that can differentiate into other types of cells like bone or muscle cells. By injecting stem cells into injured or damaged areas of the body, doctors are able to help the body heal faster and more effectively. Not only does this help athletes recover from intense physical demands and injury-prone situations faster but it also allows them to commit fully to every game knowing they will be ready to perform healthy and fit in a week's time. Another popular modern technique is Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. For this treatment, a player's blood is extracted and processed to isolate platelets, parts of blood cells that help form blood clots to slow or stop bleeding, which can be reinjected into the player's site of injury. This speeds up the healing process and reduces inflammation. This once again reduces the amount of time players are out injured for and reduces the pain caused by common injuries like muscle sprains.

Shattering Records: The Future of the NBA

All of this would be impossible without innovative training techniques. The last decade has seen a monumental rise in virtual reality training, which allows players to practise in a simulated environment that mimics real-life game situations. This has been particularly useful for developing complex skills like ball handling and court vision.

The undeniable rise of elite modern athletes is evident worldwide. The icons of the sport with the records today from Steph Curry's efficiency from the 3-point line to LeBron James's points tally could be overshadowed in years to come and, according to some, the possibility of this happening is becoming more and more clear. We can celebrate the legends of today as what they are but remember that records and titles are consistently fading and as one stands atop the ladder today, another will tomorrow. But as far as the NBA goes, fans are being treated to the best basketball the world can offer so may the records keep shattering.

Rihanna’s 2023 Super Bowl Performance Rihanna’s 2023 Super Bowl Performance

The era of a comeback or a drawback? The era of a comeback or a drawback?

Since "Anti" in 2016, Rihanna hasn't put out a new album. Many of her devoted fan base interpreted her decision to perform at the Super Bowl this year as a sign that she would be putting out new music soon. She might reveal a new single, album, or possibly a tour. However, she claimed, at one of pop music's biggest platforms, that despite all of the awaited anticipation, she had a private life to return to. But even if her performance on stage had been a little drained, there were more crucial issues to pay attention to.

Rihanna played fragments of 12 hits in 13 minutes; these are well-known songs that don't call for a lot of pomposity. She was at her most exciting, sassy, authoritative, and vivacious at a bit after the set's halfway point.

A brief pitch for her very own cosmetic brand, Fenty? Sure. A subliminal message of solidarity for a troubled peer? We don't see why not. One of the key pop hitmakers of the twenty-first century, Rihanna, doesn't need the Super Bowl as much as the Super Bowl needs her, and her performance was a masterclass in doing just enough.

She approached it in the same way many people do when their personal lives begin to beckon: obediently, lightheartedly, exhaustedly, and looking to work the angles just a little bit.

Rihanna is a multifaceted personality who has achieved success in the fashion and beauty industries and is a new mother. She is also an incredibly renowned pop star with a substantial discography. Yet she doesn't currently produce hits. Furthermore, she hadn't given a presentation of this size since 2016. Hence, the Super Bowl renowned for its marketing, was triumphant in landing her biggest performance in years. Ebro Darden, who represents Apple Music, portentously mumbled, "The wait. is almost. Over.''

rubbing her baby bump. She was joined on stage by scores of her backup dancers also donning puffer white coats as the stage was backlit by radiant rays of red, magenta, pink, and violet lights.

The fact that Rihanna even made an appearance at all is indicative of the N.F.L.'s ability in enacting — or papering — over its scandals. She refused to perform at the Super Bowl in 2019, a time when refusing a performance on one of the largest stages in the world was definitely political, in response to the NFL's response to Colin Kaepernick's protest. But, Jay-Roc Z's Nation's participation with the league in the years that followed completely changed the musical style and social context of the halftime show!

GrammyAwards GrammyAwards Recap2023 Recap2023

On February 5th 2023, Paramount and CBS held their annual 65th ‘The Grammy’ Awards Ceremony. These are awards presented by the Recording Academy of the United States to recognise "outstanding" achievements in the music industry. They are regarded by many as the most prestigious, significant awards in the music industry worldwide, so as you would expect, people in the industry hold much appreciation for even being nominated by the Academy to receive these noble awards.

This year the Grammy awards was hosted by South African comedian Trevor Noah as has been since the 2021 Grammy awards, the fans have expressed how fitting he is for the role by integrating his witty humour throughout his skits.

Category wise, there are 91 different titles up for grabs this year ranging from ‘Album Of The Year’ to ‘ Best Upcoming Artist’. As per usual all eyes were on the four biggest awards handed out each year: album of the year, record of the year, song of the year and best new artist. Bonnie Raitt won the award for song of the year for "Just Like That" while Lizzo won record of the year for "About Damn Time." Samara Joy took home best new artist while Harry Styles won the biggest award of the Album of the Year trophy for "Harry's House."

21

Beyonce made Grammy history, as she became the artist with the most Grammy award wins of all time, winning four of the nine categories for which she was nominated for during the ceremony. This brings her total number of Grammy wins to 32, with a total of 88 grammy nominations. Her fans (The BeeHive) were extremely proud and instantly swarmed social media with many congratulations.

We are all aware of how renowned the Grammys events are for their live performances, this year's acts included top artists and nominees such as Harry Styles, Bad Bunny, Mary J. Blige, Steve Lacy, Lizzo, Kim Petras, Sam Smith, Brandi Carlile, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Chris Stapleton, DJ Khaled, and Luke Combs.

The US Recording Academy also hosted a celebration of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary. Big Boi, Busta Rhymes, Spliff Star, De La Soul, DJ Drama, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Missy Elliott, Future, Glorilla ,LL Cool J, Queen Latifah, Rahiem, Rakim, RunD.M.C., Salt-N-Pepa, DJ Spinderella, Scarface, Swizz Beatz, Grandmaster Flash, Grandmaster Mele Mel, Scorpio, Ice-T, Lil Baby, Lil Wayne, the Lox, Method Man, Nelly, Public Enemy, and Too $hort joined the Grammys in tribute to the genre.

The ceremony also graciously honoured the musicians who passed away this year in a memorial segment, with songs from many artists including Kacey Musgraves, Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, and Migos’ Quavo. This was very touching and emotional as a very courteous and respectful homage to the artists.

This year's Grammy Awards was an amazing, jam packed night and I'm sure everyone is looking forward to this time next year, for another event dedicated to the music industry to honour the current best artists for their talent. Congratulations to all the artists that have won on behalf of The Monthly!

The Evolution of Award Show Fashion

EDITOR'S CHOICE EDITOR'S CHOICE

The glitz and glamour of award shows have always captivated audiences around the world. The 2023 Oscars marked 70 years since the ceremony was first televised, and it brought the attention of 16.6 million live viewers onto the annual ceremony to celebrate Hollywood’s finest. From the lavish venues to the star-studded guest lists, this event celebrated the brightest and most talented in the entertainment industry.

However, over the years, the red carpet has become a stage in itself, and is almost as anticipated as the awards; becoming a canvas for both celebrities and designers alike, to make a statement with their fashion, and set trends for the rest of the world to follow

The evolution of award show fashion has reflected the changing attitudes and values of society. Since the events origination in 1929, the Oscars have been a formal affair, which has always meant one thing only: all-out glamour

In the initial award shows, the emphasis was on elegance and sophistication, with minimal embellishments and muted colours. This was a mirror for the conservative values of the United States at the time, where conformity and tradition were prized above all else. Women wore long gowns which covered their ankles, with high necklines and modest sleeves. Men wore classic tuxedos, with black bow ties and patent leather shoes.

Fur lined clothes were also very popular among the higher classes during this time, and so this was reflected on the red carpets.

This proprietary and poise lasted for most of Old Hollywood. The 1940’s 1950’s saw stars like Audrey Hepburn and Mariluyn Monroe, who set the standard for classic Hollywood glamour, with their sleek refined gowns and modish updos. The emphasis was on simplicity and refinement. Christian Dior and Charles James were some of the favoured designers of this era, creating timeless and understated looks which continue to inspire our fashion choices, even today.

However, the 1960’s and 1970’s were hit by a wave of social and cultural upheaval in American culture, and award show fashion quickly began to exhibit the same newfound sense of individualism. The era of liberation meant that risk-taking and bold self-expression were more common and celebrated Celebrities like Cher and David Bowie became important figures in the media. Women began wearing pantsuits and shorter hemlines, and men began experimenting with colours and textures

24

Stars like Twiggy and Jane Fonda became figures of fashion, with trend-setting mod-inspired mini dresses and statement accessories. This time-period also saw the emergence of diverse designers, such as Stephen Burrows and Willi Smith, who brought a new level of originality to the red carpets.

In the 1980’s and 1990’s, award show fashion became more lavish and extravagant, with designers like Versace pushing the boundaries on what was considered acceptable. Stars like Madonna became known for their more daring yet provocative red-carpet looks, which consisted of sheer fabrics, cutouts, and bold prints. However, the 1990’s meant that the red-carpet also began to see a resurgence of classic Hollywood glamour with a twist: sleek, form-fitting gown, but with frills at the end. Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman were main examples of this.

The 21st century marked a change for the fashion industry in general, becoming more diverse and inclusive than ever before Designers from all cultures and backgrounds debuted their looks on the red carpet. Also, events like the met-gala have embraced different traditions and religions through their themes.

There has also been a growing emphasis on making fashion ethical and sustainable. Emma Watson has been an advocate for this, using her platform to promote eco-friendly and socially responsible brands, with her looks being vintage, or recycled.

Joaquin Phoenix is also another example of a star who has promised to promote sustainability from the fashion industry. His 2021 Oscar suit was a repeat of the one he wore for the 2020 Oscars, making him one of the few celebrities to stimulate outfit rewearing In recent years, award show fashion has been more about self expression and showcasing personality than adhering to a strict dress code Challenging gender norms and celebrating personal style on the red carpet means a shift towards a more incorporating future This is a true reflection of the changing attitudes and values of society as we move to a more accepting world.

The progression of award-show fashion is a testament of the ever-changing nature of the entertainment industry. From the black-tie elegance of old Hollywood, to the unconventional outfits of the 21st century, it has always been a representation of cultural and social trends of the time period. As we continue to embrace a more welcoming society, it will be exciting to see how the red carpet will inspire and reflect the fashion industry.

Rihanna is Expecting… But Where Is the Media ?

The excitement of an pregnancy announcement is an art that has fizzled under the pressures of time and competitive PR. Beyonce, Cardi, Nicki, Kylie, now RiRi? Twice? But where is the media?

The formula of an iconic pregnancy reveal are as follows: social media, major performances, statement outfits, jewels, rhinestones, a supportive unabsent father’s muffled screaming as televised by alternate crowd camera angles, A-list status and “stan” presence. What is the mogul missing besides none of the aforementioned criteria? The phenomenon of baby culture intersecting with celebrity is a nuanced heavily philosophical occurrence one cannot examine through a model or given formula.

Beyonce’s Blue-Ivy reveal was an event for the pop culture history books. With the star concluding a long winded intensive performance with a dramatic unbuttoning to reveal a precocious bump. The formula was followed to near perfection down to the crowd reactions. But what is so different about this to our other bonafide starlette? Monica Hesse for Washington … unveils her analysis on why ”Rihanna’s pregnancy was not the star of her halftime show”imposing this idea that “Beyoncé’s reveal was a definitive entrance to motherhood, an invitation for fans to celebrate her transformation.

Rihanna’s reveal was less an announcement than an acknowledgment, almost a casual one”. To condense this in more digestible definitive vocabulary, Beyonce’s reveal was conclusive to her talent and thus stood out as secondary to her stardom whereas Rihanna’s bump was as significant as the compact she opened her performance by using before it was handed to a backup dancer. Proven by the fact that “viewers had to wait until the halftime show finished to receive definitive confirmation from Rihanna’s representatives that they’d even seen what they thought they’d seen.” as Hesse would put it. It was not significant enough as to be understood by the general public.

Cardi B on the other hand, though unveiling her pregnancy as Rihanna did, mid-performance, did so performing a stripped jazzy ensemble of her single “Be Careful”. In this sense, the bassy hip-hoppy stylized sound did not outperform her protruding belly. Whereas yet again, RiRi’s star power defeated that of her red suit-ed reveal.

This formula is big business, starlett pregnancy will never become obsolete, we will always have the idols, the celebrities, the societal pique towards the mysterious or greater. Rihanna is greater, she is not the greatest, not the first, but regardless, the media coverage or lack thereof, will set a golden standard for how not to market pregnancy and motherhood
