The Implicit Gender Double Standards

It’s the implicit assumptions made from little actions that through different perceptions, differ between the genders. When a male does something, it’s calculative and smart whereas if a female does the same thing it’s manipulative. This is detrimental in our society, constantly pushing women back, placing obstacles in the way that men simply do not have to deal with. The gender double standard suggests that what is acceptable or suitable for one, is not for the other, demonstrating how different judgements are made between a male and a female, even when both execute the identical action.

What makes matters worse is that many women never realise the double standards that are placed on them, due to it being generationally ingrained into their outlook of life. The fact is that as long as these implicit double standards are still part of our culture and society, it’s our requirement to address and confront them.

In order for society to move forward, we must make it a priority to confront and end these double standards, and allow women the opportunity to be treated fairly. All women should be given the same opportunity to succeed and reach their full potential regardless of their gender, race, or economic status. This begins by shifting the conversation around women and by normalising respect and acknowledgement of their efforts. The sooner these changes are implemented, the more opportunity and security women will have in their everyday lives.

It's up to each of us to be aware of these implicit double standards and challenge them whenever they come up in conversation. Let's create a society that recognises women as the intelligent, capable individuals they are, instead of one that continues to see them as inferior to men.
