Welcome back everyone! As the first month of school races by, and we all enter the classroom ready for a new year of valuable learning and self enrichment, The Monthly is back with its first edition of the 2023-2024 academic year!
Starting the year with a bang, our theme this month is The Brave and the Bold; a theme we hope people carry with them as they move through this academic year. Bold ideas drive our future, but they mean nothing without bravery. The bravery to step outside of the realms of what is acceptable. The bravery to face the criticism. The bravery to stand up for ourselves and the values we live by Everything we use in our daily lives, be that a phone or a computer, was once a bold idea that someone was brave enough to fight for.
Bravery is also taking each day at a time.To be brave and bold doesn’t have to be coming up with the next Shark Tank winning project, or being the next Bill Gates. It’s facing the challenges life throws at you, and pushing back ten times harder. Sometimes, bravery is just waking up every morning, and facing the day
The Monthly aims to show you this theme from across the world from the Women's World Cup, to the G20 summit and so much more, The Monthly brings you all the latest stories, events, and ideas!
Every month, we award someone with the Editor’s Choice award, meant to celebrate exceptional work within The Monthly This award normally goes to someone whose work is incredibly poignant, or shows an exceptional writing ability. This month, we celebrate someone who has been a part of The Monthly for many years. She has worked tirelessly every single month to provide everyone at the BSB with the latest opportunities and dates. Very sadly, she will be leaving The Monthly at the end of this month, but we could not be more grateful for all her outstanding efforts and work, so this month, the Editor’s Choice is Ayushi Karani.
It's hard to talk about being brave without thinking about those in Morocco and Libya right now. Morocco has been hit with a devastating Earthquake, doing massive damage within the country Libya is facing the Mediterranean Coasts’ most deadly cyclone in recorded history, with thousands of people being displaced or killed Our hearts go out to all those affected, and we encourage everyone to help, donate, or learn about what is happening in these countries right now.
As we come to the end of September, we hope to see everyone stepping out of their comfort zone A new academic year is a new opportunity; get involved in the school community, or do something you normally never would! This month, be bold, be brave, be original

On the 25th of August 2023, Donald Trump surrendered in Georgia's Fulton County Jail where his now world infamous Mugshot was taken
He surrendered to the charges of plotting to overturn the state's 2020 election results, making history by being the first ever former president to have a Mugshot taken of them.
Trump was required to pay a bail bond of 200,000 dollars (75,395 66 Bahraini Dinar) for his release from the Atlanta prison as he now awaits trial He himself later called the ordeal ‘A travesty of Justice’ This was former president Trump's first police booking photo despite it being his fourth felony arrest in five months. He then went on to post on the social media platform Twitter, posting a link to his website depicting a photo of himself in custody with the caption ‘Election interference Never surrender!’
Mr. Trump made the round trip from New Jersey on his private jet on Thursday afternoon. He claimed the cases against him were politically motivated because he was in the lead in the Republican race to oppose President Joe Biden, a Democrat, in next year's presidential election He was inside the facility for around 20 minutes Dozens of his supporters gathered outside He informed reporters at the airport before leaving that he had the right to disagree with a vote's outcome. Trump, who makes frequent unproven claims of the supposed ballot fraud of 2020, stated ‘’I thought the election was a rigged election, a stolen election, and I should have every right to do that’’
Following his narrow loss to Mr Biden in Georgia by fewer than 12,000 votes, Mr Trump was charged last week along with 18 other defendants with tampering with election results Among the 13 charges Mr Trump faces are racketeering, soliciting a public official to violate his oath of office, conspiracy to impersonate a public officer, conspiracy to commit forgery and making false statements He denies all counts
Only hours after the uploading of Trump's Mugshot it quickly became a widespread media phenomenon, taking to platforms like Twitter, Instagram and Tiktok. The onslaught of memes that followed in pursuit of Trump's picture were only made more popular with President Joe Biden's sarcastically made commentary ‘Handsome guy, wonderful guy’ appearing to make light of the situation alongside the social media users Trumps’ Mugshot was however also used by his supporters to make new merchandise, plastering it over mugs, Tshirts and flags in support of his alleged notion that the 2020 ballads were rigged.
Some may argue that Donald Trump has more potential to be America's Next Top Model, than America's next top man CLARA
An organization by the name of ‘BRIC’ was established in 2009 to present its members a platform to oppose an international framework dominated by the United States and its Western allies The founding members include nations such as Brazil, Russia, India, and China. In 2010, South Africa was the first beneficiary of an expansion of the bloc, naming the bloc ‘BRICS’.
Unlike the United Nations, World Bank or the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, this group is not a formal multilateral organization The leaders of state and government of the member countries meet once a year, and rotate the chairmanship of the group every year In addition to geopolitics, the group's core interests include development, international commerce expansion, and economic cooperation According to 2023 summit chair South Africa, more than 40 nations have expressed interest in joining the forum.
It was recently announced that six new nations were invited to join BRICS. Iran, which has the second-largest gas reserves in the world and a fifth of the Middle East's oil reserves, requested inclusion in the BRICS to improve its political and economic ties with nonWestern nations The integration of Saudi Arabia and the UAE, the two biggest political and economic powers in the Persian Gulf and two of the biggest oil exporters in the world, is likely to give the bloc greater influence in its efforts to take over the US dominated international system. Both nations are steadfast partners of the United States, however both have grown increasingly dissatisfied with the alliance in recent years, going their separate ways on matters like oil production
Latin America's third-largest economy is that of Argentina. India, Brazil - which is its main economic partner - and China - with whom it has closer financial relations than any other member of BRICS - are among its supporters Egypt ranks as one of the countries that receives the most aid from the US, but it also has developing trading links with China and has long-standing, close relationships with Russia. Egypt has learned how problematic reliance on the dollar can be over which has increased its keenness in withdrawing itself off of the currency Ethiopia's formerly rapidly expanding economy was destroyed by the twoyear civil war The US cut off trade rights and stopped providing food help to Ethiopia when the economy collapsed
Predictions have been made that the admission of these former US allies will almost certainly heighten the geopolitical tensions with the West
Meher Abbey, 6F08, Y12Researchers from US-based institutions have discovered that clinics at India's Kumbh Mela, a Hindu festival and the largest religious gathering in the world, have prescribed an excessive amount of antibiotics to the tens of thousands of pilgrims, most of whom arrived with respiratory tract infections. Their findings were supported by the Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute at Harvard University and UNICEF.
The danger of acquiring "antimicrobial resistance"—as it is known to doctors— increases as antibiotic use increases. This happens when bacteria evolve, and develop a resistance to medications meant to prevent and treat the illnesses they cause. As a result, "superbug infections" ,that are resistant to antibiotics, are becoming more common.
Kumbh Mela takes place across 4 major cities within religious sites. On the banks of the rivers that flow through the cities where the festival is held, pilgrims take a holy bath. This auspicious event can attract over 100 Million Pilgrims. The festival was hosted in the cities of Prayagraj, also known as Allahabad, and Nashik for two editions in 2013 and 2015, during which time more than 40 clinics saw more than 70,000 patients.
The median age of the patients in Prayagraj in 2013 was 46 years, and the majority of them were male. One in three people who went into a clinic at the Kumbh Mela for any reason were likely to leave with an antibiotic prescription, according to the researchers. The likelihood climbed to two in three if you sought medical attention for a runny nose.
According to the researchers, "there appeared to be little rhyme or reason to guide the selection of antibiotics when they were prescribed."
Their findings are consistent with past calculations of the frequency of antibiotic prescriptions in India, which in outpatient settings generally range from 39% to 66%.
The researchers acknowledged that clinicians at the overcrowded clinics at the Kumbh Mela encountered considerable difficulties, such as large patient loads, time constraints, and a lack of thorough patient diagnostic data.
One way that the massive over prescription of antibiotics could be prevented, is through more efficient medical systems. Being able to diagnose quickly, but also being able to track illnesses and symptoms could massively reduce the number of antibiotics being prescribed, especially at these large gatherings.
One of the first large-scale events to use cloud-based, almost real-time illness tracking was the 2013 festival in Prayagraj. The 2015 Nashik edition established the framework for ongoing epidemiological monitoring by replacing paper-based data with digital tablets.
Prof. Balsari explained that in both cases there was little institutional memory to either expand the initiative to other primary clinics or even use it during the pandemic.
He said that the Prayagraj festival in 2025 may create the groundwork for an effective digital health infrastructure that performs three straightforward functions, including the identification of illnesses in the city based on clinical, laboratory, drug use, and sewage data.
According to experts, India needs to tighten its laws on the prescription of antibiotics - and the biggest human assembly in history would be an efficient foundation for the legislation changes.
After 20 years of investigation on animal models, US researchers at the medical centre City of Hope have developed an oral medication, with the potential to wipe out cancer from the human body.
The drug, AOH1996, works to “annihilate” cancer cells by targeting a pro reproductive processes of cancer, known as “proliferating cell nuclear an
PCNA is responsible for the replication of DNA and supports a cell’s abili it is essential to the growth of cancer cells. It was previously deemed “un to destroy the mutated PCNAs, while keeping the ones in healthy cells in
However, AOH1996 proved to be successful in removing the tumours of toxic effects on normal cells. This appears to be the case in multiple parts such as: “the prostate, brain, ovarian, cervical, and the skin”.
“Our cancer-killing pill is like a snowstorm that closes a key airline hub, sh down all flights in and out only in planes carrying cancer cells," says Malka the author of the published research regarding the drug's capabilities
This provoked a surge of hope within patients and doctors. So far, howeve the drug has only yet been tested on animals and isolated cells in labs. Ph of research will shift the focus to testing AOH1996 on cancer patients Ei participants will be given a dose of the drug twice, on a daily basis, for u 28 days.
This will be repeated as long as no fatal symptoms become clear. Their health will be closely monitored for up to two years to evaluate both short term and long term impacts of AOH1996 on the body Afterwards, results can be submitted to regulatory agencies to be approved before the drug is released to the public.
If the pill is deemed safe, and continues to demonstrate its capability to efficiently cure tumours, it would mean that over 20 million patients who are diagnosed with cancer every year could be saved, which would be one of the most astonishing medical findings in the history of medicine

Deep sea encounters, they’re terrifying. How deep does it get? What creatures lie beneath the surface, and how can they survive in such harsh conditions? From shrimps to sharks, from immortal jellyfish to Cuvier-beaked whales. Each of these creatures has explicitly adapted to the conditions of the deep sea, and for some odd reason, they all look frightening.
There are two factors to consider when studying the conditions of the deep sea: pressure and temperature. The world record for the deepest free dive is 831 feet below sea level, where the pressure is 26 times higher than on the surface. Humans cannot go any deeper due to the high pressure that would cause the human lungs to collapse. However, other creatures, such as blue whales, can. Their lungs have adapted to survive such conditions, resisting the pressure of the deep sea, allowing them to hunt their prey, the giant squid. This takes place approximately 1700 feet below sea level. Sunlight still manages to penetrate through, allowing these creatures to see. But what do creatures below this do? What happens when there is no sunlight, rendering sea creatures completely blind? There are two exciting adaptations that some creatures have gained throughout their evolutionary history.
The first is bioluminescence—an organism’s ability to create its light source. This is found in creatures such as the vampire squid, whose scientific name (Vampyroteuthis infernalis) translates to vampire squid of Hell. This squid uses its bioluminescent organs to circumnavigate through the deep sea. Their eyes have also adapted to this by their increased size, allowing more light into their cornea, and giving them an even better view of their surroundings.
However, some organisms, such as eyeless shrimp, don’t need eyes to get around! Some organisms have light-sensing organs that allow them to sense nearby underwater volcanoes. These shrimp species thrive in temperatures as high as 800°F and feed off hydrogen sulphide from volcanic eruptions, which would typically be toxic to many species. However, these eyeless shrimp contain bacteria that break down the volcanic waste into useful energy. This takes place at depths of 7500 feet.
Mammals such as the Cuvier-beaked whale are still strong enough to reach depths below 7500 feet. This whale species holds the record for the deepest any mammal has been. It was recorded swimming at 9816 feet. Even more fascinating is that it can stay underwater for 2-3 hours. But how has it adapted to doing so? The Cuvier-beaked whale has high concentrations of the proteins myoglobin and haemoglobin, allowing it to contain high oxygen concentrations. It also has a very slow metabolism and can control its blood flow, allowing the blood to pass mostly to the vital organs needed for survival.
The limit of the ocean’s depths can go as low as 36000 feet. In 2019, Victor Vescovo descended 35,853 feet into the Pacific Ocean, breaking the record for the deepest dive ever. In doing so, he discovered new species, such as sea cucumbers and single-celled amoeba, and even our tenacious little mark on the planet, plastic! There is so much that scientists don’t know yet, and many species have yet to be discovered in the depths of the abyss, where a hidden world blossoms with life so magnificent that it defies human imagination. We have only struck the tip of the iceberg.
Today, if someone were to tell you that your stomach was actually in your legs, you would never believe it, because we have an excessive amount of physical evidence to support the human anatomy that we believe in today. To a certain extent, it is good that we now have so much proof and scientific awareness, but we need to be careful of becoming closed minded to new scientific discoveries.
Nicolaus Copernicus was an astronomer who was brave enough to rethink everything people believed about the universe. He proposed heliocentrism (the idea that the earth revolves around the sun), and before that, everyone believed in geocentrism (the idea that the sun and all other celestial objects revolve around the earth).
He was the first heliocentric thinker to make his ideas public. He was first inspired by a man named Domenico Maria Novara who he met whilst he was studying canon law at 23 years old at the University of Bologna in 1496. Novara was one of the first people Copernicus had met who dared to challenge the ideas of Ptolemy, the philosopher that ‘perfected’ geocentrism. Copernicus then realised that Ptolemy’s model and Aristotle’s (another ancient philosopher whose work was widely accepted) did not follow each other. He realised that if the sun was at the centre of this model, not the earth, it would all fit in a perfect puzzle: the solar system as we know it today. Despite this, he was not widely believed in his lifetime.
His model, although impressive, was not at all perfect. He managed to calculate the distances from the sun to each planet with impressive precision, but there were still many flaws in his theory that needed to be improved upon However it still helped contribute to what physicists call the ‘grand unified theory’ This is essentially a model of everything that will describe the universe and everything in it
The idea of a grand unified theory should inspire all scientists. Because that way, every single physicist has contributed with even the smallest discoveries. Newton, Pascal, Copernicus. Every scientist contributes to the bigger picture, even if their work is not 100% accurate. It can be built upon and perfected by future generations.
This can apply to other scientific fields For example, in the field of biology, rather than trying to find a perfect cure for cancer immediately, every scientist that contributes even the smallest amount of their creativity can be a part of the overall cure at the end. It is not the job of one biologist or chemist alone. This way, scientists are not afraid to think outside the box and make mistakes, because as a global scientific community we are all working towards the same goal:
Enlightenment.
The main message to take away from the story of Nicolaus Copernicus is that being brave and sticking to what you believe in is something that we cannot afford to lose Our ideas will not be immediately accepted And they certainly won’t be perfect. But they are helping us reach a larger goal, even if it is by only a tiny step.
The release of information by the Pentagon regarding unidentified flying objects (UFOs) has ignited a renewed sense of wonder and curiosity in the minds of people around the world For decades, the existence of UFOs and encounters with extraterrestrial life have captivated the public's attention. The recent disclosure by the Pentagon marks a significant milestone in transparency and opens the door to a deeper understanding of these enigmatic phenomena.
Throughout history, there have been countless reports of strange sightings in the sky, often dismissed as mere fantasies or delusions. However, as technology advanced and more credible witnesses (such as military personnel) began to come forward, the subject of UFOs gained increasing awareness. The secrecy surrounding government investigations and the suppression of information only fueled public fascination and speculation.
In a bold and unprecedented move, the Pentagon has chosen to release a trove of information on UFO sightings, including declassified reports, videos, and firsthand accounts from military personnel. This decision reflects a changing attitude within the government, moving away from secrecy and embracing a more transparent approach The release aims to provide the public with access to previously classified information and promote a more open dialogue on the subject The release of UFO information by the Pentagon holds several significant implications Firstly, it acknowledges the existence of unexplained aerial phenomena that have been witnessed by reliable sources. This acknowledgment challenges the notion that UFO sightings are simply figments of imagination or misinterpretations.
Furthermore, the disclosure raises questions about our understanding of science and the boundaries of human knowledge. The characteristics exhibited by these unidentified objects, such as sudden acceleration, maneuverability, and flight patterns that defy known aircraft capabilities, push the limits of our current scientific understanding. The release, therefore, presents an opportunity for scientists and researchers to delve deeper into these phenomena and expand our understanding of the universe The Pentagon's release has had a profound impact on public perception It has instilled a sense of awe and wonder, prompting individuals to question their place in the vast cosmos Researchers, astronomers, and enthusiasts now have access to previously classified information, which will undoubtedly fuel further investigation and analysis. The release of UFO information by the Pentagon paves the way for future research and collaboration between government agencies, academia, and independent investigators. The transparency demonstrated by the Pentagon is a crucial step towards a more comprehensive understanding of these phenomena. It also signifies a shift in societal attitudes, encouraging open discussions and the pursuit of knowledge in a field that was once shrouded in secrecy
Multiple minor wildfires started throughout Hawaii, USA in the first few days of August. These stretched the fire departments’ resources thin but were eventually contained by the 4th of August. This left the island of O’ahu dry, and by the 7th, the capital city of Honolulu issued a warning to all residents.
On the 8th of August, over 30 power poles were knocked down by winds of speeds reaching up to 130 km/h, “with at least 15 separate outages impacting more than 12,400 customers”. These are believed to have contributed to igniting the majority of the fires. Lāhainā, the most affected town situated in West Maui, experienced wildfires blown into the densely built neighbourhoods. This caused hundreds of houses and buildings to burn within minutes, giving residents no prior warning and forcing them to flee in their cars amidst a sea of flames. Firemen could not easily contain the fires as the melting pipes in homes caused the pressure in fire hydrants to significantly drop, essentially rendering them useless.
Approximately an hour later, the fires had been blown to the main part of the town, forcing thousands to attempt to escape. This created massive amounts of traffic and at 5:45 p.m. local time, the fire reached the shore, which drove many to resort to jumping into the sea to save themselves from the burning and exploding cars.
Despite Hawaii having the largest outdoor siren system in the world comprising over 80 sirens in Maui alone, none were heard due to the power being out for most of the day. Authorities only issued limited radio warnings and, at times, confusing social media posts which were only seen by a few. As of the first of September, there are 115 confirmed deaths and 385 unaccounted-for individuals. This marks the deadliest natural disaster Hawaii has experienced in the last 60 years. Much of Lāhainā was burned, with over 2200 buildings burned, 96% of which were residential.
The US government issued a declaration of a major disaster on the 10th of August, and multiple helicopters as well as a fleet were mobilised to aid with search and rescue operations. A $700 payment was made to every household, amounting to $1.9 million in aid. This was compared by many to the $113 billion sent to Ukraine since the beginning of the invasion in February of last year, which has sparked some controversy as to whether the government is helping Hawaiians enough.
Many Hawaiians are filing lawsuits due to negligence from many authorities, such as Hawaiian Electric being sued for failing to shut off power even as fires swept over the archipelago, or the Hawaiian state itself being sued for not taking any measures to reduce the risk of wildfires even after the 2018 fires, as well as the growing volume of dry vegetation, which were “actively discussed among governmental officials, utilities, and informed academics, and was well-known to owners of such grasslands”, according to Harold Dennis Wells, a 57-year-old father who lost his daughter and her boyfriend to the wildfires.
This wildfire, like many in previous years, is a result of human activity leading to global warming. Natural disasters and extreme weather like this will only continue if we keep polluting our planet. As the Earth’s temperature increases, the weather gets drier, so the risk of fires starting in especially hot areas grows more and more as hotter sunlight hits dry leaves and grass. According to the US Forest Service, more than 85% of wildfires are caused by humans and this number is sure to increase if nothing is done to reduce our emissions.

Canada has been experiencing an ongoing, record-breaking string of wildfires since March 2023, with the intensity increasing beginning in June. Large fires have broken out in Alberta, British Columbia, the Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec, among the other 13 provinces and territories that have been affected. The 2023 Canadian wildfires burned more land than any other in Canada's history, surpassing the wildfires of 1989, 1995, and 2014, as well as more land than any other in North American history, surpassing the Western US wildfires of 2020.
Smoke from over a hundred wildfires burning in Quebec, Canada, caused some of the worst air pollution ever recorded in New York City. For more than a week, the Northeast and the MidAtlantic were covered in smoke from the fires that had drifted south. This sparked worries about the negative effects of ongoing poor air quality.
8:30AM 1:31PM
Air pollution in New York City has been a significant issue in recent times. The city has experienced some of the worst air quality globally due to the smoke from over a hundred wildfires in Quebec, pushing the air quality index above 200, a very unhealthy level.
Very small particulate matter, or PM2.5, which is the smallest and most dangerous pollutant, is present in the smoke. It can penetrate the lungs deeply and enter the bloodstream when inhaled. Asthma, heart disease, and other respiratory illnesses are just a few of the health issues it has been linked to. It comes from sources like the burning of fossil fuels, dust storms, and wildfires.
At least 10 school districts in central New York State cancelled outdoor activities and events as a result of the poor air quality. Academic, athletic and extracurricular events are among them, as well as outdoor playtime and gym classes for all students.
Despite years of planning to address climate change, smoke was never on the city’s checklist. It’s an issue that is barely mentioned in New York’s hazard mitigation plan, which might need to be altered in order for the city to avoid drastic weather and climate issues.
Minhaj Adnan- 6F01- Year 12
Ever wondered what happens when science and political power come together?
It all started in the 1980s when scientists discovered an enormous hole in the Ozone layer. The two hundred countries pushing forward to fix this life-threatening disaster truly evinces their determination and confidence to prevent a worldwide catastrophe. This unforgettable event is what’s going to bloom again through this article.
Let us start with the main character - the ozone layer: It protects us from the 98% of ultraviolet radiation from the sun. To the contrary, CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons - coolants that were used in fridges and ACs) damage this shield. The science behind this is what makes this chemical monstrous. The chlorine in CFCs joins to the ozone molecules when moving towards the ozone layer, hence rapidly destroying it. This concept was presented by the scientists Molina and Rowland (Remember those names!). However, it was hard for them to spread this devastating fact due to CFC producers invalidating and even accusing them of being secret agents sent from the Soviet Union.
By 1985, more than 50% of the Ozone layer was destroyed in the region above Antarctica. And with that, NASA’s picture of the hole in the ozone layer was soon spread to the world calling for action, and subsequently, fights to ban CFCs began.
With the growing anger of the people, US President Ronald Reagan and UK Prime Minister Margeret Thatcher stepped in. Both Reagan, who suffered from skin cancer, and Thatcher, who was a chemist, clearly understood why actions needed to be taken. This strong aspiration led other politicians (from 150 more countries) to step in.
Together they agreed upon and signed the Montreal Protocol (International Treaty to Repair the Ozone Layer) and took measures on January 1, 1989, by creating funds to aid other countries in using much more harmless CFC alternatives like ammonia (still used today). Recent studies have conveyed that without this protocol, an additional 0.5-1 Co increase in temperatures due to global warming would have followed today.
A convention where all countries came together for the first time, a convention that indicated more growth than any other, a convention where all countries ratified a shared treaty. They proved that by unity, resilience, and determination, anything could indeed be possible! As a result of this treaty, the hole in the Ozone layer started to shrink and is predicted to vanish by 2070. However, they can't stop here, and they did not - The Montreal Protocol is still alive and is shedding light on its mission to improve climate change.
Last but not least, remember Rowland and Molina from earlier? They got awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry - a truly splendid ending.
Stepping outside of your comfort zone is one of the best ways to realize your true potential for growth and self-discovery While staying inside the cage of what is comfortable may feel safe and familiar, taking risks can result in tremendous personal and professional progress.
Embracing change is necessary to go outside of your comfort zone. We often oppose change because we are afraid of the unknown and the possibility of failing. But by taking calculated chances and overcoming new obstacles, we open doors to countless opportunities Each step outside our ease broadens our horizons and strengthens our resilience, whether it's taking up a new hobby, choosing a different career, or striking up a conversation with a complete stranger
Comfort zones can promote complacency, which prevents personal progress. We limit our exposure to new experiences, viewpoints, and abilities when we stay in our safe space. We are exposed to a multitude of opportunities for selfimprovement when we step outside of our safe zone. It encourages us to learn new things, hone new abilities, and comprehend ourselves and the world around us more fully Through these encounters, we develop into more flexible, selfassured, and capable people
The potency of fear can prevent us from achieving our maximum potential
Leaving our comfort zone gives us the chance to face and conquer our fears
Every time we confront a fear head-on, we develop resilience and learn that we are more powerful and capable than we had previously thought We learn important lessons about resilience, self-belief, and the value of pushing above our self-imposed limitations from these experiences, whether it be making a presentation, flying alone, or pursuing a new leadership position
Stepping outside of your comfort zone has the amazing effect of expanding the scope of your familiarity itself. As you expose yourself to new situations, what first appeared intimidating and strange gradually becomes more comfortable You start a positive cycle of growth and adaptability by consistently pushing yourself and looking for new chances. This widened feeling of ease not only improves your personal life but also creates new opportunities for success and contentment in all aspects of your life
Although stepping outside of your familiar situations presents challenges, the benefits greatly exceed the short-term discomfort You can unleash your true potential and start a path of self-discovery by accepting change, pursuing personal growth, overcoming fear, and stepping beyond your boundaries. So, challenge yourself and embrace the transforming potential of venturing outside of your comfort zone by daring to take that jump You'll be astounded by the amazing heights and person you can develop into.
A normal walk outside in the city would usually include the “vandalised” walls covered in graffiti that are barely paid attention to; often drawn and painted by teenagers. It began in the 1960’s in New York, civilians who were upset over the political climate armed themselves with cans of graffiti and took to the streets to paint their opinions on the walls of the metropolis for everyone to see - an act of rebellion However in the 1980’s, these paintings were carried from the streets to prominent art galleries by JeanMichel Basquiat and Keith Haring, considered the pioneers of street art, they paved a way for the likes of Banksy to shine. The anonymous Guerilla artist is seen as a postmodern pioneer for street art with several of his creations displayed in a multitude of museums around the world. But what made Banksy so special? And how did he become a public figure despite his anonymity?
It all began in 1990, Banksy hopped on board with Bristol's “DryBreadZ” Crew as a freehand graffiti artist. He built a name for himself in the underground scene of Bristol as he painted the walls with political statements and ideas. He began his journey of exhibition in a simple apartment flat in 1998; displaying his acrylic on canvas art, an early depiction of the iconic “Flower Thrower” began its road to becoming one of the most recognizable works of art in the 20th century.
Banksy continued progressing in his work throughout the years, decorating the streets of Bristol with his thought provoking artworks and opening up exhibitions from restaurants to town halls. Seeing his paintings marked all over the city became a regular part of people's daily lives. However, Banksy faced criticism from multiple influential organisations given the controversial nature of guerilla art, yet he welcomed these criticisms quoting them onto his book covers defining his art as a “pathetic cry for help” from The Guardian and “Deeply superficial” from the Evening Standard. What these organisations didn’t open their eyes to is the societies his artworks spoke for, a medium that echoed people’s experiences and battles towards peace and freedom for the better. In 2003 the “Flower Thrower” was brought to life again on the West
Bank Wall, in the midst of the conflict and struggle of the Palestinian people, petals and colours lay in the palm of the thrower. This mural became a worldwide symbol for the strive to peace, recreated around the world in more countries than one could remember. Societies saw themselves in the eyes of the Flower Thrower.
Among his other works that have been sold for millions of dollars are “Girl with Balloon” and “Devolved parliament”. Despite creating history through his art work, he remains anonymous as the world watches his paintings spread. Banksy was able to change the world of graffiti, turning vandalism into a profession. The shadows of society's struggles and spirit, the stains of corrupt politicians and the struggle for peace have been splattered on canvases for the world to see by the renowned Guerilla artist.
While most of the world settled into a well-deserved summer break, a different kind of celebration was in full swing – the sporting spectacle more commonly known as the Women’s Football World Cup. From the TV screens to the pitchside stands, masses tuned in as a group of remarkable female footballers took centre stage. The drama that ensued and the stories that were written remind us that this was no ordinary summer hiatus; it was the moment when the women's game lit up the world's stage.
In a shocking turn of events, France, considered tournament favourites, suffered an early exit during the group stage, sending shockwaves throughout the footballing world. Where one titan falls, another emerges. The resounding success of the English “Lionesses” and the Dutch “Oranje” showcased a new generation of ballers with the world at their fingertips. England’s journey was hallmarked by a disciplined approach with stars in Rachel Daly and Lauren James, aiding them in reaching the semi final and narrowly missing out on a spot in the final. Meanwhile, the Dutch team displayed superb teamwork and skill, culminating in their run to the WC Finals. Both teams left an indelible mark on the tournament, cementing their status as formidable contenders in women's international football.
However, beyond the grand stage of the Finals, numerous nations authored new chapters in the annals of history, with a select few savouring their own fairy-tale conclusions. Australia’s dreamy run throughout the World Cup gained worldwide acclaim as social media surged with support for the “Matilda’s”. Their sensational run through the knockout stages was punctuated by their never-say-die attitude and extraordinary teamwork. It stands a testament beyond the boundaries of sport, inspiring a nation and highlighting the power of belief, unity, and sheer determination. Australia may not have secured the ultimate triumph, but live on as the embodiment of the breathtaking power that makes football so enticing.
In the end, the Spaniards - more affectionately called La Rojas- won the tournament for the first time and cemented a spot in history. However, not all was sunny in Spain… On the pitch, Spain dominated the competition and showcased their footballing prowess by easing through to the Quarter Finals with inexplicable ease. Their form continued as they navigated through tough matches and reached the semifinals but choppy waters were on the horizon.
Off the pitch the chaos ensued. Reports of an internal power struggle and displeasure with management rose and overshadowed the impressive success on the field. As the tournament progressed, this rift seemed more evident and a split seemed inevitable. These issues led to a public feud and ended with the firing of Jorge Vilda despite the silverware he brought home. However it did not end there, headlines were struck with news of Luis Rubiales, the Spanish Football Federation President, being held in contempt for his actions during the awards ceremony.
Visuals showed Rubiales kissing Spanish footballer, Jenni Hermoso on the lips and when questioned ensured that it was consensual and there was no harm done. All seemed well until Hermoso released a statement stating “nothing was consensual and with the pictures we will fight in the courtroom.” Weeks of depositions and drama ensued resulting in the removal of Rubiales from his position and a restraining order being filed against him.
In conclusion, Spain’s remarkable footballing achievement will forever bear the blemish of internal power struggles, and a global carnival ended on a somber note. But not all was doom and gloom; the world of football was both enthralled and taken aback by the splendor of the World Cup success. History was written, history was viewed and history was experienced and as we look ahead the future of women’s football shines bright with promising horizons awaiting all the footballers to come.
