TTrump's rump ' s Agenda Agenda

Donald Trump has pledged sweeping policy changes, including the largest deportation of immigrants in U.S. history, significant tariffs on imports, a halt to climaterelated regulations, a restructuring of federal health agencies, and ideological reforms to the education system Now, Trump has the opportunity to act on these promises

What's next for the US and the World?

What's next for the US and the World?

Insiders from Trump’s party believe he will move more swiftly in a second term, drawing on his first-term experience. While his initial tenure brought major policy shifts, Trump often cited bureaucracy as a barrier to achieving his boldest objectives. This time, his team expects a deeper understanding of federal agencies and policy processes to enable a more ambitious and rapid agenda.

Although certain goals such as tax reforms and changes to the Affordable Care Act require congressional approval, many others do not Trump’s vision isn’t limited to reversing Biden administration policies; it seeks to fundamentally reshape federal agencies and the policies they create.

During Donald Trump’s campaign, tariffs became a hot topic as he placed taxes on goods from countries like China, Canada, and the European Union. These tariffs were meant to protect American businesses and reduce the trade deficit, but their impact sparked mixed reactions across the country. Donald Trump has declared "tariff" his favorite word and plans to act quickly on trade restrictions promised during his campaign He proposes a 10–20% tariff on all $3 trillion in U.S. imports and a 60% tariff on Chinese goods, significantly expanding the duties from his first term. These imposed tariffs will make many products more expensive for American consumers. From groceries to electronics, higher prices will affect everyone

When it comes to Obamacare, even conservative health policy experts agree that a full repeal of the Affordable Care Act is unlikely. Instead, Trump is expected to prioritize easing regulations on insurers and revising or repealing specific aspects of the law

Vice President-elect JD Vance supports reducing costs for healthier, younger individuals by allowing insurance pricing based on their health risks However, this approach could raise costs for older adults and those with pre-existing conditions, who are currently protected from such pricing under Obamacare.

TTrump's rump ' s Agenda Agenda

What's next for the What's next for the US and the World? US and the World?

Trump’s "America First" approach challenged traditional alliances like NATO and led to a trade war with China. On trade, Trump imposed tariffs and renegotiated deals like NAFTA into the USMCA, altering international economic dynamics However, his withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement marked a step back from global climate leadership.

Globally, trust in U.S. leadership declined, while populist movements found inspiration in Trump’s rhetoric His policies and actions continue to spark debates on America’s role in the world and how future administrations may shape global relations.

These proposed policies would have transformative and far-reaching effects on the United States, impacting the economy, society, and international relations. While some measures, such as expansive tax cuts or reforms to health and food systems, may appeal to certain groups, others - like mass deportation, unprecedented tariffs, and the reversal of climate regulations - could spark legal, social, and economic challenges

As the world watches for what comes next, one thing is clear: Trump's presidency will leave a mark far beyond U S borders

A Divisive Victory: The Georgian Parliamentary Elections

On the 26th of October 2024, people across Georgia headed to the polls in a parliamentary election pivotal to the country’s political landscape. The results saw the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) Party claim its fourth consecutive victory with just under 54% of the vote. However, opposition parties, which together secured 38% of the vote, have since rejectedd the results, alleging widespread irregularities and fraud. These concerns have divided the country, as well as international allies.

The election saw a high voter turnout of 59% – the highest turnout since the GD came into power. This reflected the high stakes of the election, with opposition parties presenting a united front against what they described as the GD’s “authoritarian tendencies”. They accused the GD of undermining Georgia’s path to European Union membership and Western alignment, a key issue for many voters. The ruling Prime Minister has explained that it will not be on the agenda “before the end of 2028”. Meanwhile, GD framed itself as a stabilising force, accusing its opponents of risking war with Russia.

The Georgian Dream Party was founded in 2012 by billionaire and former Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili. While the party initially declared itself a centre-left party aiming for EuroAtlantic integration, it has been met with high criticism over its alleged anti-Western and pro-Russian foreign policy. Many Georgians claim Ivanishvili has exerted significant influence on Georgian media outlets, which has increased discontent with the election results.

The electoral process was met with numerous allegations of vote-buying, voter intimidation, as well as concerns about the integrity of the vote counting. Exit polls added to the controversy, with opposition-commissioned surveys predicting a much closer race or even a victory. These projections did not match official results, fueling suspicions of manipulation.

Thousands of Georgians took to the streets to protest the GD’s victory, demanding a recount. The protestors waved Georgian and EU flags outside the parliament building in the country’s capital, Tbilisi. They sang the Georgian National Anthem before the opposition leader, Salome Zourabichvili, addressed the rally. She claimed the “votes were stolen”, and that the election was rigged using “sophisticated” methods linked to Russia.

The USA, European Union, Germany, and France all condemned the “irregularities” in the voting process. American spokesperson Matthew Miller called for a “full investigation” by both local and international officials. However, Moscow’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded by rejecting any suggestions that Russia has interfered with the country’s “internal affairs”, countering that it was actually the West who were attempting to influence the vote.

The election results carry significant questions about Georgia’s political future. The growing discontent with the Georgian Dream’s rule has led to an increase in civil unrest and protests. The outcome could have lasting consequences on the country’s democracy, as well as highlighting the broader implications for democracy in the region.

Tech Meets Politics

Musk’s Role in Trump’s Campaign

#politics #tech #trump #musk

Elon Musk has left an indelible mark on the ever-evolving political and technological landscape. As the CEO of numerous creative enterprises, including Tesla and SpaceX, and the owner of X, formerly known as Twitter, Musk has several platforms that frequently directly influence political discourse and campaigns. Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in late 2022 was a historic event, as it entailed significant policy modifications This acquisition proved advantageous for former President Donald Trump, as his account was reinstated after a nearly two-year suspension following the Capitol riots. With over 88 million followers, Trump gained access to a substantial audience to disseminate his views and mobilize his base.

Musk's free speech resonates with the uncensored brand of Trump talk. While it creates bold discussion, critics believe this same banner promotes misinformation, radicalises disputes, and tears up society at its seams

Beyond restoring Trump's voice on X, Musk's more significant technology initiatives indirectly influence the campaign. Tesla's dominance in the electric vehicle market and SpaceX's position in satellite communications have transformed global conversations regarding energy independence and national security issues that hold significant importance for Trump. Musk's outspoken views on these problems frequently supplement Trump's messaging, infusing a tech-driven perspective into campaign concerns.

Musk's interactions with Trump have been controversial. Some perceive Musk as a disruptor who serves Trump's goals by furthering free speech and decentralising political power Others argue that Musk's actions, such as mandating "community notes" to fact-check information on X, indirectly counteract Trump's most extreme utterances and show Musk's capacity for influence.

With X serving as an online metropolis, Musk’s actions are believed to have significantly shaped the narrative around the 2024 US Elections.

But in the end, it's not about Trump; it's about Musk and other tech billionaires reshaping how technology, politics, and free speech interrelate in the modern era. While politically correct, Elon Musk and Donald Trump may not frequently find common ground. Their collaboration is poised to usher in a novel chapter in political campaigning, where the virtual realm holds equal sway as the physical one.

MINHAJ ADNAN, 6F01, YEAR 13

Yoghurt, Kimchi, Kefir, Miso you name it! All of these delicacies have undergone a process called fermentation, involving natural bacteria, yeast, and other microorganisms that convert sugars and acids into alcohol or other acids. Fermentation not only enhances the flavour of the food but also aids in preservation and improves its nutritional value

B E N E F I T S

Probiotics produced during fermentation restore the friendly balance of the good bacteria in your gut, alleviating digestive problems like bloating, gas, and constipation

They also boost the immune system and reduce inflammation, aiding in fast recovery and reducing the risk of infections. Bacteria in fermented foods also aid in increased digestion and the availability of certain vitamins and minerals within food, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis.

A Stanford Study found that a 10-week diet high in fermented foods increased gut diversity by 23% This study involved 36 healthy adults and showed that yoghurt, kefir and kimchi led to an overall increase in microbial diversity. They also noted a decrease in the levels of 19 inflammatory proteins in blood, including interleukin 6, which is linked to conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, Type 2 diabetes, and chronic stress

O N T H E O T H E R H A N D ,

Fermented foods can be high in histamine, which can cause headaches, hive and digestive problems in people who are sensitive to them. They can also cause food poisoning and severe allergic reactions as they do not remove allergens such as gluten, soy or dairy, and improper storage could leave them contaminated, posing a risk of foodborne illness.

Fermented foods offer a wide range of health benefits, but it's important to consume them in moderation and be aware of the potential negative impacts Overall, incorporating them into your diet can contribute to better gut health and overall well-being.

Can AI finally smell?

Artificial intelligence has gone a long way since it was first theorised in 1956. In 2024, chatbots and other forms of AI now have the ability to see and hear, with other senses currently being developed, one of which is smell.

For years, many companies were racing to digitise scents, none of which have achieved so on a large, tested scale. This is mainly due to the fact that there aren’t any readily available data sets which can be used for scent. Chatbots mainly use the entirety of the internet as data, however this can’t be done for scent. A variety of companies tried to use data sets from fragrance companies to fuel their vision, only to realise that the data was not very useful at all. However, one startup, ‘Osmo’, came up with a creative solution.

Osmo was co-founded in 2022 by CEO Alex Wiltschko, a former Google employee with a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience and a Ph.D in olfactory neuroscience. He publicly announced that his goal was to “improve human health and happiness”. It is known that computerised smell can help us identify diseases early and improve the quality of healthcare, and also create fragrances which do not sting the eyes or skin. However there was no clear way to approach the project.

During his time at Google, Wiltschko created a principal odor map which was essentially a data set of thousands of aroma molecules. These molecules were obtained from experienced perfumers. The difficulty here was the specificity of each molecule's structure and AIs struggle to analyse it, as a change in a single bond or atom could completely change the smell. AI was trained on this data set of scents which were spread across different categories (fruity, musk, floral, etc). Eventually, it could effectively predict what things smelled like.

The company ’ s goal is to be able to digitize scents in one location and teleport an identical copy to another. However the CEO has admitted that although they are on the right track, it is likely to be years before this is achieved. This company is one example of many in the world of AI and it is unclear who will be first to create a widespread model.

There would be many health benefits to the development of this sense artificially: It would help with diagnosis, as changes in body odor can be detected. It could help relieve pain, as some scents have been proven to be effective in doing so, and much more. It would be nothing short of a groundbreaking victory in the field of AI and innovative scientists around the world are racing to be the victors.

DO THE LAWS OF PHYSICS DO THE LAWS OF PHYSICS

REALLY DEINE OUR WORLD? REALLY DEINE OUR WORLD?

AANUMITACHAUDHRY10A NUMITACHAUDHRY10A

The laws of physics are beneficial for our world and yes; they define it. Nature is so much more complicated than what mankind believes it to be. From apples falling and discovering the phenomenon of gravity to how a ship floating on water is upthrust, it all comes down to these fundamental laws that are taught, right in our classrooms.

Physics is practically woven in our daily lives with our interactions with the environment (and vice versa). Every action we do, every step we take is governed by physics. Newtonʼs law of motion explains how we move, how fast cars can drive, and how planes take flight. The energy behind these actions- whether it be thermal, mechanical, or electrical -is a clear representation of these laws in action. For instance: thermodynamicswhich explains the flow of energy and heat in a substance- power our homes, our cars and so much more.

From smartphones to televisions-theyʼre all examples of electromagnetic physics. These electromagnetic waves radiate electrical signals to text and call from one device to another. Not only has physics contributed to the creation of these products but X-rays, MRI scanners, radiation therapy for cancer patients, microwaves, refrigerators and so much more. Approximately 50-60% of cancer patients use radiation therapy once in their treatment.

The rainbows and clouds we see in the sky are once again, other examples of physics. A rainbow is an optical phenomena thatʼs a product of refraction, total internal reflection, and dispersion of light in water droplets resulting in a beautiful array of colors shaped like an arc in the sky. Clouds occur when atmospheric pressure lowers and the altitude increases. This causes this air to expand and causes the water to condense to form a cloud.

Physics is frankly not just another field to study- it serves as a framework for understanding the way our universe works. It inspires innovation that shapes our future and by recognizing the influence physics has on our lives, it helps to deepen our appreciation for those who work in this field. Scientists have dedicated their lives to doing research for betterment of humanity so with this understanding it increases our gratitude towards them.

MYSTERIOUS ENVIRONMENTAL EVENTS: SCIENTISTS' MOST BEWILDERING PUZZLES

SHRADHA THAMPI, YEAR 12, 6F12

Mysterious events occur as time progresses, also not failing to progress curiosity in scientists as they try to uncover the truth behind the fascinating events of our mother Earth. Who knew our environment was hiding so many secrets?

The Tunguska Event (1908): This is an unusual event that occurred in a forest in Siberia, where 2,000 kilometers of the area and 80 million trees got damaged. The local people living there witnessed ‘fireball trailing smoke, then a flash brighter than the sun and a loud noise like thunder’ (according to NASA). People and houses near this remote area were blown away. It was believed to be an asteroid, but it wasn't until 1927 that a geologist, Leonid Kulik, went through this area and found no evidence. Even though later investigations found some pieces of extraterrestrial objects, it was still uncertain whether it was actually an asteroid that hit it Not even a crater was found…what could it possibly be?

Bermuda Triangle: In 1881, a ship called ‘Ellen Austin’ was travelling in the Atlantic Ocean when suddenly, an unidentified ship was seen. It contained goods, but no one was present there Therefore, some people in Ellen Austin were sent to drive that ship with them. However, when an uncanny area, filled with heavy storms, was reached, the two ships separated. As the pirates in Ellen Austin went to search for it, they found the ship in perfect condition, but the people that were sent to drive it were missing… This uncanny area is infamously known as ‘The Bermuda Triangle’. The area that connects Florida, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico Many ships and airplanes went missing there, and the cause of it and where it went is still unknown. However, there is a theory: scientists from the University of Colorado theorize that there may be hurricane-force winds (of speed above 170 mph) after looking at satellite weather images. A speed that no transport can withstand. Yet even today, no investigators have been able to shed light on this region. No wonder it's called ‘The Devil's Triangle’.

The Dancing Forest: If you visit the dancing forest in the Curonian Spit, Russia, you will see a lot of trees and their unusual twisted trunks. Many studies were conducted hoping to find out why this is the case, but none were successful. Some think it's the wind, some think it's the loose sand, but the best theory is related to caterpillars: it is how these creatures damage the apical buds (where elongation of the stem happens) that came to be the reason for their spiral shape. It is such a famous site that it is known as a wish granter that will fulfil one’s wish if they climb the tree. It really does ‘twist’ your brain around, does it?

In conclusion, there are so many bizarre events, so many eerie places on Earth that have not been explored well enough to find answers yet. Nevertheless, this does make us reflect on the fact that “the more we know, the more we realise we do not know” - Aristotle.

Geoengineering:

SolutionorIllusionfor aWarmingPlanet?

The rise of global warming highlights the urgency for innovative solutions. Climate change, caused by greenhouse gas emissions, disturbs the energy balance in the Earth. This results in higher temperatures and negative effects on various elements of ecosystems and human societies. Geoengineering comes up as a viable alternative, divided into two broad categories: Solar Radiation Management (SRM) and Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR). The objective of SRM is to cool the planet by reflecting sunlight back into space, while the objective of CDR is to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. However, geoengineering is a controversial strategy for reducing global warming since it presents serious ethical, geopolitical, and environmental issues

In its most ambitious approach to global warming, SRM attempts to imitate the cooling effect of volcanic eruptions In search of creating a global sunshade, stratospheric aerosol injection aims at scattering reflecting particles in the upper regions of the atmosphere. This could provide a quick fix for rapid warming by lowering world temperatures in a matter of months. On the other hand, CDR techniques, like direct air capture, aim to fix climate change by removing the source of the problem carbon dioxide. What is even more astounding is that a gram of stratospheric aerosol could counteract the warming effect of a ton of carbon dioxide, underlining the extraordinary scope of these technologies While there are likely to be some adverse impacts, recent models of climate change suggest that SRM could be implemented so that the increase in global temperature would be limited to 2°C.

Many complicated barriers and disastrous threats destroy the hope of geoengineering’s promise While SRM techniques provide almost instant relief from rising temperatures, they are likely to do harm to the environment as well Imagine a world where the artificial solar manipulation resulted in agricultural areas turning into wastelands due to lack of rain or systematically unprepared areas getting hammered by lethal floods. The Earth maintains extremely complex ecosystems which can be adversely affected rather unexpectedly by extensive ecological disruption

Geoengineering:

SolutionorIllusionfor aWarmingPlanet?

There also are more significant ethical dilemmas beyond the threats to the environment. Countries could be lured into an illusion of security and lowered motivation to act in order to cut greenhouse gas emissions if geoengineering solutions appear to be feasible. In the long run, this may in fact aggravate climate change. Furthermore, there are problematic issues causing concern that the geoengineering effects are not equitably shared across the globe. Developing nations suffering already from climate change could well incur much more damage from unintended effects, which would increase the disparities that are already there

The biggest fear is possibly the huge world of unknowns these technologies offer that could radically change the Earth Even with all the progress, we still do not have a complete understanding of the climate system on Earth. The importance of the decision to perform such treatments becomes magnified by the unpredictability of potential long-term cascade effects.

The geoengineering dilemma has many very real geopolitical and social complications, establishing a very complex scene for conflict and disorder Management really is the key question: who can decide when and how to alter the Earth's climate? Wealthier countries acting independently may cause serious unforeseen catastrophes by changes in the weather patterns and spark diplomatic disputes with other countries. Smaller countries are affected by the decisions of superpowers One additional element is found in public perceptions; protests could be incited due to distrust of government and scientific institutions that is created through fears of the changes to nature.

Geoengineering can, in theory, avert climate change, but practice has always been stifled by scientific ambiguities, environmental risks, and geopolitics Reliable and low-risk alternatives, such as renewable energies and reforestation, are much better proven methods of mitigation. Geoengineering, rather, should be seen as a possible, lastresort addition to consider. Climate change needs to be dealt with urgently, but humanity cannot afford to rely on unproven, large-scale solutions, like geoengineering, without thorough research and global collaboration Therefore, continued skepticism will accompany all possible considerations of geoengineering as one component of an allencompassing climate plan to the climate problem.

FUELSOFTHEFUTURE

Carbon emissions are rising and it’s a problem that we can no longer afford to ignore; our main source of fuel, petrol, is the leading cause. According to the World Nuclear Association, Worldwide emissions of CO2 from burning fossil fuels make up a whopping total of about 34 billion tonnes (Gt) per year. Unlucky for us, the production of petroleum diesel heavily relies on burning fossil fuels. Another additional drawback is, of course, the fact that it’s a non-renewable energy source, meaning it's a finite resource which will eventually run out. It doesn’t end there! An overlooked immense issue with petrol is all the pollutants that are released by its production and burning These include:

Carbon dioxide: Increases global warming

Carbon monoxide: Toxic as it can prevent the blood from transporting oxygen around the body

Carbon particulates: Cause global dimming

Unburned Hydrocarbons: Cause respiratory problems

Oxides of Nitrogen and Sulfur: Cause acid rain

Once petrol does run out, humanity will need to find a new replacement which is just as efficient, but not nearly as harmful That’s where alternative fuels come in Alternative fuels are fuels derived from sources other than petroleum These fuels are intended to replace more carbon-intensive energy sources such as diesel and gasoline We need alternative fuels in order to tackle the issue of depletion whilst concurrently minimising the dangers of pollutants, and reducing the effects of global warming and climate change There have been many research projects over the past years surrounding alternative fuels, which compare the different fuels in order to find the ‘Fuel of the Future’ Let’s take a look at our contenders

HydrogenFuel

The first and most promising contender is also the first and most abundant element in the world, making it the perfect choice for a renewable and finite fuel source. Hydrogen fuel is a clean fuel that is produced in many ways, but for it to be considered a ‘zero-emissions fuel’, the best method of production is through electrolysis using renewable energy sources; as this method doesn't produce pollutants Another surplus is the many domestic production methods of the fuel such as biomass gasification which can be easily set up on farms to power communities, thus reducing reliance on fossil fuels whilst fostering innovation Hydrogen fuel is immensely versatile; being used in fuel cells to generate electricity, providing backup power generation, refining petroleum, storing excess energy and that's not even all! It seems like a clear winner However, due to its explosive and highly flammable nature, its storage methods are very complex -typically requiring high pressure tanks made of special materials, such as aluminium alloys, which are costly and require careful handling This major challenge restricts the commercialisation of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), hence why researchers are now focused on finding alternative advanced storage technologies to enhance the viability of FCEVs, to contribute to a more sustainable future

Biodiesel

Our next contender is an extremely intriguing one, because it’s made from things we can find in our gardens Biodiesel is a renewable, biodegradable fuel made from plants and plant waste such as palm oil, canola oil, sugar cane, etc. By utilising plant waste, this fuel promotes waste reduction and recycling Additionally, biodiesel is biodegradable, unlike its petroleum counterpart, reducing longterm pollution. It’s produced by a process called transesterification, which is completely carbon neutral It’s currently mainly used in blends containing mostly petroleum diesel as this doesn’t require significant modifications to vehicle engines, but this is not nearly as efficient or environmentally friendly as using pure biodiesel (B100) A life cycle analysis completed by the Argonne National Laboratory found that the use of B100 reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 74% compared with petroleum diesel Unfortunately, biodiesel has quite a few downsides too Although biodiesel decreases carbon emissions, it increases nitrogen oxide emissions by 4-13%, increasing the chances of acid rain Additionally, pure biodiesel is rarely ever used in transportation due to several complications such as gelling issues at low temperatures, lower fuel economy, higher production costs, and shorter shelf life (due to its susceptibility to oxidation and microbial contamination). Moreover, there are ethical concerns surrounding its land use, as it has to compete with food crops for agricultural land and resources

MoreOptions

Beyond hydrogen and biodiesel, there are a number of other contenders such as ethanol, which is made from fermenting plant materials and can reduce emissions when combined with gasoline Another alternative is the use of natural gas, specifically methane, as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels, which offers cleaner combustion Furthermore, renewable diesel (which is also produced from biomass but using a different method than biodiesel) performs similarly to petroleum diesel but without blending issues Other cutting-edge substitutes include synthetic fuels made from renewable energy sources and biogas produced from organic waste, both of which seek to lower carbon footprints and improve energy sustainability

At this current moment in time, it’s unclear which of the alternative fuels will become the fuel of the future because none of them are efficient enough to be used on a large-scale basis just yet, especially with all their different complications However, as research progresses and technological advancements are made, we may see improvements in efficiency that’ll hopefully enable these fuels to shape a sustainable future for the generations to come

Social Media's Reaction to the 2024 Election

Social media has turned into a center of excitement, anxiety, and heated debate since the results of the 2024 election were announced. Donald Trump was predicted to be the winner of the presidential race, which brought a severe change in the political landscape. Hashtags like #Election2024, #TrumpWins, and #FutureOfAmerica started trending immediately after the results were released, engaging millions of users who shared their reactions. Some people rejoiced over the extension of Trump’s policies, while others expressed concern over what victory may mean for climate change, healthcare, and civil rights.

The election broke records as the highest turnout of voters in decades, with the younger generation casting a significant amount of that vote. On platforms like TikTok and Instagram, teens and young adults were communicating regarding the key issues that mattered most in the election. For many, it meant more politics, polarisation, and what it might do to the nation’s coherence. Others were concerned with all-new established policies and what they might do with respect to action on climate change, reproductive rights, and even funding for education. "I’m scared about the future but knowing to keep informed and involved is important," wrote one user and received thousands of comments in support. While some rejoiced over the judgment, others said they were looking forward to Trump leading them to something more stable and economic growth.

Experts said that this election is both a demonstration of the power and the potential fallibility of social media. It allowed more people, especially young voters, to take an interest in political discussion. However, it has also opened the way for a lot of misinformation. Most of Americans' timelines are flooded with false claims about voting fraud and exaggerated policy outcomes, making it harder for people to make an informed decision on how they feel regarding the elections and the overall outcome.

The 2024 election has given a sense of how divided and passionate people are over the direction of the country. It has served as a prominent reminder to many about how different electoral outcomes can affect the lives of everyone, and the need to be better informed. As the country now moves forward with the results of the elections, its people are called upon to be more cognisant of the world beyond their screens and often divisive views fostered on social media. They are encouraged to expand their perspective, practice civil discourse, and work together toward a better future-not just for America but for society as a whole.

Why Celebrities Endorse Politicians

As the 2024 presidential election drew near, celebrity political endorsements once again began to make headlines, influencing the masses. Prior to the November 5th election, both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris had the support of prominent celebrities from the entertainment, sports, and music industries in their campaigns.

Trump rallied the support of many high-profile figures, like billionaire and SpaceX founder Elon Musk, who publicly committed $45 million to support efforts aimed at securing Donald Trump's win. Other celebrities like Roseanne Barr, and Zachary Levi and Kid Rock (who threatened to leave the US if Trump lost) have also expressed their backing

On the other hand, Pop artists Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift, and Billie Eilish all publicly expressed their support for Harris; Swift even corrected the record after an AI-generated, Deepfake endorsement of the president started making rounds on social media, which resulted in a significant spike in traffic on voter websites.

Stevie Nicks said Harris “is our great hope to save the world” and that had the democratic party won, she would have played Harris’s inauguration. Other A-list celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Lizzo, Katy Perry, Jon Bon Jovi, Cardi B, and Beyoncé (whose song "Freedom" served as Harris's unofficial campaign theme) all made appearances on behalf of the Democrat.

One of the first pop musicians to support Harris was Charli XCX, who coined "Kamala is brat," which went viral on TikTok The Kamala HQ marketing team took this in stride and incorporated the "Brat" font and colors in their own advertising materials, successfully combining pop culture and political branding to appeal to younger voters. However, many noticed that while Harris earned the backing of former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Jimmy Carter, as well as former Vice President Dick Cheney, no former U.S. president has publicly come out in support of Trump, which speaks volumes

As celebrities continue to speak out on political issues, politicians themselves are increasingly adopting celebrity-like personas. The "TikTokification," of viral marketing have made modern politicians seem more like public figures, rather than traditional leaders to gain the support of younger voters.

However, while these endorsements might generate media attention, their actual influence on voter behavior is more difficult to predict. According to Dr. Nwokora, they tend to be most effective with undecided voters, who only make up about 510% of the electorate.

Though celebrity endorsements can add excitement to the political landscape, candidates should not rely on them too much, and as for voters, it's crucial to look beyond a celebrity’s fame and focus on the real issues that shape our democracy.

As winter sets in, athletes across a range of sports face unique challenges that impact their performance, preparation, and their mental resilience. From the cold temperatures that affect muscles and endurance to the need for specialised gear. Winter conditions create obstacles for both professional and amateur athletes.

The physical impact of cold weather on muscles and joints

Cold temperatures have a direct impact on muscles, reducing flexibility and increasing the risk of injury. Cold muscles are more prone to strains and cramps, which can limit an athlete's agility and speed. For sports that require quick movements such as sprinting, football, and rugby, colder weather can slow down reaction times, which will drastically worse performance. To counter this, many athletes extend their warm-up routines, focusing on exercises that increase blood flow and flexibility. Coaches also adapt training programs to minimise the risk of injuries.

Mental challenges in cold weather

Winter can make it tough for athletes to stay motivated Training and competing in these harsh conditions isn’t just physically difficult but mentally draining too Feeling can make it harder to focus and give your best effort For example, football players or runners might struggle to stay in shape during matches and training sessions when the temperature drops To stay on track, many athletes set small and short-term objectives to keep their spirits up and to improve their game. Coaches also help by encouraging positive mindsets and reminding athletes of their progress.

Adaptations in training routines

Training in winter requires changes beyond warm-up adjustments. Many teams shift to indoor facilities where possible to continue high-intensity training. For athletes who can’t move indoors, training is adapted to work around peak cold hours, usually within shorter high-intensity drills to avoid excessive exposure to the cold weather. For example, runners might do short bursts of fast running followed by slower recovery periods. This helps them build stamina without having to stay outside for too long in the cold. Protective equipment, such as gloves and thermal wear, is also used to protect muscles and joints from the cold.

Specialised apparel and equipment

Winter conditions require modifications to standard gear In sports like football and cycling, athletes wear thermal layers and insulated footwear to maintain ideal body temperature. Footwear is adjusted to improve grip on potentially slippery surfaces, and hands are shielded with gloves or grips designed for the cold. These changes are essential for maintaining performance while staying safe and minimising the risk of injuries.

Winter hydration and nutrition strategies

Athletes may feel less thirsty in the cold , however, hydration remains crucial. Dehydration is a hidden risk in winter because athletes often sweat without feeling as much heat. To maintain hydration levels, sports teams emphasise regular water intake as well as electrolyte-rich drinks. Caloric intake is also adjusted to meet the energy demands of keeping warm, with many athletes consuming foods that provide sustained energy, like proteins and carbohydrates.

Increased risk of injury

Hypothermia and frostbite are real threats for athletes that are exposed to freezing temperatures for long periods of time. Frostbite, in particular, can harm fingers and toes, creating serious long-term damage if not managed properly. To prevent these injuries, athletes will need to pay attention to their bodies, take breaks, and wear protective layers to protect themselves from the cold weather.

Inside the GPDA’s Stand Against Censorship

The GPDA has regained public attention after, now four-time World Champion, Max Verstappen, used profane language in reference to his car’s performance in the last lap of the Azerbaijan GP, and was later summoned to the stewards for a hearing, ultimately receiving a punishment of community service. Verstappen protested the ruling, answering with one-word answers in the post-qualifying FIA press conference, and later held an impromptu press conference outside the room answering journalists’ questions. Two races later, Ferrari driver, Charles Leclerc was fined €10,000, though he immediately apologised, saying "Oh, sorry! Oh, no, oh no! I don't want to join Max!"

The FIA’s approach in penalising swearing has recently taken the spotlight, claiming the drivers must be role models and they must avoid words causing ‘moral injury’ Many drivers, including Verstappen’s title rival, Lando Norris, expressed that inadvertent profanity is sometimes a part of competing under intense duress and danger.

On November 4th, following Max Verstappen being “obliged to accomplish some work of public interest” after swearing in the FIA press conference, fans noticed a new Instagram account under the name @grandprixdriversassociation, followed by multiple drivers and the GPDA chairman, Alex Wurz F1 fans quickly took to social media to share their thoughts about when a statement would be released, and what it might be about, excited that drivers’ issues were going to be addressed to the FIA publicly.

A few days after the Instagram account was created, a post titled ‘GPDA Statement regarding “Driver Misconduct”’ was uploaded Written under the directors’ and chairman’s authority on behalf of all drivers, the post discussed nuances in using certain words in different contexts, and “urged” the FIA President to also consider his own tone and language when talking to [the] member drivers, or indeed about them”, possibly referencing his comments referencing rappers, when he was accused of racial stereotyping It also reiterated the consensus drivers’ remarks to the media, about their nature as adults, and briefly called back to previous rules regarding jewelry and undergarments. Additionally, the statement requested that more financial transparency be given, especially in determining what the money from financial fines is allocated to.

In the past, the GPDA led race boycotts, and most memorably, the 1982 South African GP strike All 30 drivers had a sleepover in a hotel room, striking against a clause in their superlicense contracts. In the end, post-negotiations, it was agreed that changes to the drivers’ contracts would be made, and the race went through. This led fans to wonder how quickly amendments to the issues raised might happen, if at all.

As of the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix, driver and GPDA director, George Russell has confirmed there has been no direct response from the FIA to the collective statement He has also commented, “In the meantime someone else has been sacked […] There’s no transparency and there’s no consistency so… let’s see who the next one is,” proceeding the firing of four senior figures at the FIA in two weeks, including leading steward, Tim Mayer. Mayer revealed that the contentious decision to penalise drivers’ language came directly from Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the FIA president, and discussed his involvement in making his opinions known via staff, although stewards’ panels are supposed to be independent bodies.

For now, FIA conditions and regulations will continue to generate noise as F1 enthusiasts and drivers alike await a true response and subsequent change

The Growing Concern Behind Bullying

Camila Mamigonian Gonzalez, Y12

Throughout centuries, across cultures, and in between ages, bullying has been an everlasting concern. We have all heard about it, and in some cases experienced it firsthand or secondhand. As the concern for bullying grows stronger every day, it's important to understand why this issue has emerged and the different ways it's addressed.

According to the American Psychological Association, bullying is the “form of aggressive behaviour in which someone intentionally and repeatedly causes another person injury or discomfort.” The reasons behind why this behaviour occurs are usually complex and vary in explanation A bully will create this behaviour in the pursuit for power and control, by picking on those deemed as weaker or different. Peer pressure is another main way in which bullying commences. The Social Learning theory explains that we are likely to imitate the behaviour of someone we identify with and want to be like. In adolescents, imitation of behaviour that is not always right is an often occurrence in the pursuit to be liked. This enables bullying and in most cases, affects the chances of this toxic behaviour being identified and stopped.

People across the world have become more aware of bullying thanks to social media. Through social media, thousands of people have been able to come forward and share their stories of being bullied or seeing others experience bullying. The sharing of these instances inform others, especially teens, of the awful consequences bullying has on others Campaigns by major companies or hashtags used by celebrities have brought light to cases of bullying People who come across these posts and accounts have the ability to delve deeper into these situations and continue sharing these stories. Although social media can be a host for negative forms of bullying such as cyberbullying, its contribution into educating large masses of people to understand bullying has been massive. In fact, various short films posted on Youtube have reached millions of views, as these are shared via school assemblies, emails, and group chats This and similar ideas have shunned light in the danger of bullying and pushed many to advocate against it.

The Growing Concern Behind Bullying

Bullying has become a growing concern through the increased apprehension of mental health, which consists of their emotional and psychological state. There is no doubt that the bullying a person is experiencing, causing, or spectating will have an intense impact on their mental health. It has now been proven that people underperform in work or school, and generally have a poorer quality of life when they are suffering from issues causing harm to their mental health We live in a generation where mental health is becoming more and more prioritised and understood across the globe. Therefore, the identification and consequences of bullying behaviour has led to many psychologists and experts placing emphasis on the consequences of bullying, placing strong preventions, and implementing successful interventions in certain cases

Combating bullying is not easy. It requires a great deal of determination and commitment from institutions like schools and workplaces to educate staff and students about the impacts of bullying. Often, victims don't speak out about their experiences or they never even recognize the behaviour in the first place. Hence it is crucial that we get informed on how to identify and most importantly, prevent it Thanks to the growing concern around this issue, we have developed reasons and methods to suppress and rise above the harm caused by this negative behaviour. For the sake of our humanity, be part of the movement that aims to make the world a kinder place.

Reflection Graritude

To many, Reflection should only be done on special occasions because, as a society, we have placed too much emphasis on it being about looking back; however, many forget the most important step it’s about looking back to move forward. To many, it's about analysing past mistakes and thinking about what could have been done differently. In reality, It's an important opportunity to remind ourselves growth is inevitable and that our journey is not linear. We can evaluate what went well and where we can grow. There are always two sides to every coin like there is to every story. For students, this could be recognising our academic comebacks and setbacks or simply being aware of the times when things don't go according to plan Whether the lesson is about resilience, time management, or collaboration, every test, project, or competition teaches us something new.

Taking time to reflect allows us to process and learn from our past experiences so that we can make new exciting memories without being weighed down by our past Reflection is about appreciating how far you have come as a human being. No matter what the sun is going to keep shining and every day is an opportunity to create something new something beautiful

It's important to remember reflection is a positive process and not a negative one. Our thoughts influence our emotions which influences our behaviour which reinforces our thoughts For example, Koster et al investigated differences in memory recall between depressed and non-depressed individuals, focusing on their ability to remember words with different emotional tones: happy, sad, and neutral. Koster et al. found that depressed individuals were more likely to remember sad words compared to happy or neutral ones Non-depressed participants, in contrast, tended to recall more happy and neutral words This suggests that depressed individuals may have a cognitive bias that reinforces negative emotions, as they focus more on and remember sad or negative information. Non-depressed individuals, on the other hand, are more inclined to focus on positive or neutral stimuli, which supports their emotional well-being

This study provides an important reminder not to view the world from a fixed perspective and how much power our thoughts have on our behaviours. The world around us is constantly changing and as a result, we need to be able to adapt and deal with change The new year might seem scary because a lot will change but it is a chance to create something beautiful.

Reflection allows us to analyze the past, while gratitude focuses on celebrating it In the midst of our busy lives, it's easy to overlook the many people and experiences that brighten our days. Gratitude involves acknowledging these blessings and expressing appreciation for them.

As another year comes to a close, let's take a moment to pause, reflect on our journey, and express gratitude for the individuals and experiences that have shaped us. By doing so, we not only end the year with intentionality but also establish a solid foundation for the year ahead

Because when we reflect, we grow; and when we give thanks, we thrive.

To Procrastinate or Not to Procrastinate, this is the science...

Great. Just two more chemistry assignments to go, a Physics group project, your English Coursework from last week, and a Maths Cycle test But surely, all of this can wait Right? The Instagram reels are calling Your hand reaches for your suspiciously nearby phone, but wait – your sense of guilt deep down demands you stop, but will you do so? Right before the avalanche of deadlines that’s fast approaching, a battle commences … Will you win against Procrastination?

This enemy that affects over 85% of university students, and dates back to at least the ancient Greeks, is just your body trying to help! To save us from tasks that evoke fear, stress, or insecurity A part of our brain responsible for processing emotion, the amygdala, clashes with our rationale centre, the prefrontal cortex, with the former mostly emerging victorious. It’s an emotional problem. You’re petrified by thought of having to search your last brain cells for a coursework idea, or being bored to sleep from differentiating

But you ’ re very passionate about Physics, so why procrastinate? You know you have to make a phenomenal one. burdnened with this thought, you postpone it until you ’ re “ready” to give it your best. This is perfectionism. The thought of underachieving in what you supposedly excel at is provocative, so you stray away as to not fulfill the omen that would stab at your ego. Most cases of procrastination are irrelevant of motivational factors, or “laziness” as pointed out by research

While procrastination temporarily provides relief, with a pinch of serotonin and a handful of dopamine, the procrastination parasite reproduces shortly after into stress, cortisol and adrenaline. You promise to let go of this toxic relationship, for about the 102nd time this year, to no avail. Procrastination teaches you to give in to all your desires and not develop self-discipline; the spank you deserve every now and then It’s been associated with anxiety and some levels of depression in the long term

So how do you win against procrastination, against yourself? Remove distractions, namely your phone, and only concentrate on the task at hand until it’s done, you ’ re removing all impulsive behaviour triggers in this way Plan your tasks and down-time beforehand for the day It doesn’t have to be a tactical document, but you just need to stick to it whatever happens Have your ambitions in hindsight Is it your dream job? Or that elusive university? Finding that inspiration gives you the drive and desire to work knowing that it’s one step towards your aspiration.

Throw yourself in! Don’t wait for the perfect conditions or when you “feel like it” The most arduous step is sitting down and starting The path is already paved once you overcome that initial barrier, that’s because we tend to overestimate the energy required to start and overthink the challenges we encounter, until that barrier shatters. The very act of starting is success in itself.

It’s important to note that we ’ re all humans, and are susceptible to bizarre flaws at times. But we should never give up no matter how many times we fall, because we will always do It’s just a question of how often - how often you turn in that assignment last minute!

New Year Syndrome

New Year's syndrome, also known as New Year's depression, isn’t recognised as a mental or medical condition. Is based on false hope, when individuals create resolutions that are unachievable due to overconfidence. New Year's syndrome starts positively, when making the resolution the individual is overconfident, but then at the end of the year if unable to achieve this resolution, resulting in failure and low self worth. Both of these have psychological consequences.

In the face of failure, 8% of people quit within the first week, and 43% quit by the end of January. Why create lofty resolutions just to abandon them within a month?

As the Source shows on average just 9-12% of people keep their resolutions, this is found from a 2016 study that states out of 41% Americans who make resolutions only 9% keep them by the end of the year. A 2007 study found that only 12% of resolution makers actually succeeded in their resolutions, out of 52% that were confident of success when making their resolutions

The New Year is full of love and joy but can also trigger of mental health challenges, here are some that can occur to different people:

High expectations: many people feel pressure to create bigger resolutions or changes, which if failed leads to shame and disappointent

Regret and reflection: this is when people look back at the year feeling as if it has been full of failure and wasted.

Stress: this is a big component in the holiday season as it is filled with many things to do in a small amount of time.

Seasonal depression: the cold and shorter days may trigger seasonal depressions.

Despite these negatives New Year's resolutions can bring great feelings of achievement and joy, when done correctly. Learn from your mistakes and past failed resolutions, do not get stuck in a cycle of failure. Separate the difference between aspirations and goals, as many people create aspirations instead of measurable goals

The reason for failure in resolutions is overconfidence, and being unable to see a continuous improvement in your resolution throughout the year. There are two steps in creating achievable and rewarding resolutions.

Create SMART goals, these are goals which are; Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Rewarding, Timebound. Remember to continuously work on your New Year's resolution as it was meant to be achieved in twelve months, not one. Be resilient, you will not see a constant upward direction of achievement, there will be less rewarding months, but quitting the resolution is the worst thing you can do. Stay resilient and persevere until the end of the year.

As the New Year approaches, stay realistic and separate aspirations and goals, do not quit or get dwelling on failure. Remain resilient and work towards achieving your resolution throughout the year.

Book Reviews & Recommendations

THE PERFECT WAY TO UNWIND AFTER A LONG DAY IS TO READ A THOUGHT-PROVOKING BOOK TO KEEP YOUR MIND WORKING EVEN WHILE THE REST OF YOUR BODY IS NOT. AND WITH EXAMS AROUND THE CORNER, AS I’M WRITING THIS, I’M SURE MANY OF YOU WILL ALSO APPRECIATE ANYTHING THAT WILL HELP YOU RELAX DURING SUCH A STRESSFUL TIME AND SPEAKING OF TIME, THIS MONTH’S SEGMENT WILL GIVE YOU A RECOMMENDATION FOR THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE, TO APPRECIATE WHERE WE’VE ALL COME FROM, WHERE WE ARE AND ALSO WHAT IS TO COME.

BOOK TITLE: PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

GENRE: ROMANCE, CLASSIC

This classic novel follows Elizabeth Bennet, the spirited daughter of a country gentleman as she navigates the pressures that being a woman during Regency-era England brought her, namely that she, and her other four sisters, must marry to prevent themselves from falling into poverty once their father passes away. When two rich gentlemen move into town, one of them being the infamously grumpy Mr Darcy, they don’t go unnoticed by the Bennets While he doesn’t make a good first impression on Elizabeth, her initial disdain for Mr Darcy soon turns into understanding and love as they confront their misunderstandings of one another and change for the better of themselves and those around them.

It feels a little unsurprising, and honestly, a little anticlimactic, to recommend a classic as the “past” book but with criticism about societal norms that, while outdated, still remain in our current society, it makes for an inspiring read while also tugging at your heartstrings. Check out the movie adaptation when you’re done reading this, too, specifically the 2005 version because that’s the best one and will make you feel as completely, perfectly and incandescently happy as Mr Darcy feels by the end of the story

BOOK TITLE: WELCOME TO THE HYUNAM-DONG BOOKSHOP

GENRE: TRANSLATED FICTION

AUTHOR: HWANG BO-REUM (TRANSLATOR: SHANNA TAN)

Yeong-Ju has lived life the way she was supposed to - she went to university, got a job, and got married. But now she’s burnt out Following her divorce from her husband, she leaves her old life behind and moves to a small neighbourhood in Seoul, following her childhood dream and opening a quaint bookshop Here, she can reflect on her life, and help others reflect on theirs, read to her heart’s content and navigate the ups and downs that come with starting a store with the help of the friends she makes along the way. And it’s here that lost souls each find their own way to appreciate and live the life they want.

I feel like I’m not doing the book justice with my very cheesy description. Lovers of the slice-of-life genre (like I am) will love navigating each day with these characters and probably make you want to run a bookstore, too

BOOK TITLE: THE FUTURE: SCYTHE

GENRE: SCI-FI, DYSTOPIAN

AUTHOR: NEAL SHUSTERMAN

Humanity has conquered death Aging can be reversed and diseases can be cured. However, the population continues to increase To counter this, selected individuals called Scythes control population growth by “gleaning” people (a euphemism for killing them off). Two teenagers, Citra and Rowan, are chosen by Scythe Faraday for an apprenticeship under him, and they soon learn that the Scythedom isn’t the pinnacle of morality and equality that they’ve been taught to believe their whole life and begin to question whether their actions truly are beneficial for the rest of the world This trilogy explores the consequences of giving anyone the power to take another’s life without punishment.

Books like these make me wonder if a utopia is actually something achievable because it appears there’s always something or another that can corrupt a system, no matter how much a society tries to prevent it Just something to think about to conclude the segment.
