The conclusion to this long, tiring, and eyeopening journey has come This academic year was more than we ever expected more challenging, fulfilling, fun, and, most importantly, memorable You have to admit. It was challenging. This year was a test for us as an institution to see how well we could bounce back, and it is safe to say we did a great job
Summer break is fast approaching, and we'll have plenty of time But I ask one thing from all of you. Keep sight of your dreams. May every day during this break that you get out of bed bring you one step closer to reaching your goals

PAASCU Accreditors visit Don Bosco Makati
Last January 16 and 17, the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU) accreditors visited Don Bosco Technical Institute of Makati to evaluate the Elementary and Junior High School Departments.
The accreditors conducted multiple observations and surveys in Don Bosco during the evaluation. Many of these aforestated observations concern the faculty and their qualifications for teaching, teaching performance, academic degrees, instruction delivery, curriculum implementation, and classroom management
Likewise, the efficiency, use, and safety of the school facilities, such as the libraries, laboratories, classrooms, e-classrooms, and workshops, were also evaluated Another essential aspect is class observation The accreditors conducted class observations, especially for classes under the fullonline modality.
According to Ms Reyasel Briones, a JHS Faculty, she was initially observed during her research class in Grade 9- Calazans (Full Online); initially, she was pressured “I was pressured because class observation is also a deciding factor, but I am excited to give my best with the help of my students,” Ms Briones explained
To the journalists who will make this club next school year, you have my best wishes and prayers. Continue the legacy that those before you have given so much to create. Some may be leaving, but we'll always be around when you need us
It has been an honor to serve as your Editor-in-Chief this S.Y. 2022-2023. I will forever be proud of what the paper has become and grateful for the people who made it possible
Aside from these, the association evaluated the following: the safety and security of the Bosconians, the various student services that the institution offers, the qualifications and performance of the administrations, and the overall community of the school and how it impacts the students
Most importantly, the accreditors also observed how the school applies, implements, and instills the vision-mission statements and core values upon the students
The accreditors also held a brief press conference at the Bosco Hall in which the Bosconians, alumni, and parents answered questions regarding the quality and effectiveness of the institution At the same time, the Lay Mission Partners were interviewed about the school, their experiences, commendations, and suggestions
In addition, the PAASCU also evaluated five school years’ worth of documents and outputs produced by students and teachers
Fortunately, the PAASCU conferred many commendations on the school, highlighting the best features that Don Bosco Makati offers.
Apart from commendations, the school also received recommendations and suggestions from the association, which the institution will work hard to implement and improve on for the betterment and nurturing of the Bosconians.
The Junior High School Department patiently waits for the results and hopes to achieve a clean pass for Level II so the department can apply for Level III

Don Bosco Technical InstituteMakati holds fire drills
after 2 years
The Junior High School and TVET departments of Don Bosco Technical InstituteMakati, together with the community, conducted their annual fire drill last April 20 during the students’ 2nd period of classes

"I'm glad that it happened again We needed to have this fire drill for any eventualities Because of the pandemic, we're again starting from the very beginning Maganda na parating may ganito so that the students can stay aware and prepared,” said Mr John Valeria, Prefect of Student Decorum

Philippines and U.S. conclude largest military exercises to date
The Philippine and the U.S. forces concluded their joint military exercises and drills on April 28th through a ceremony marking the successful completion of this year's "Balikatan" exercises The ceremony occurred in the Armed Forces General Headquarters of the Philippines, better known as Camp Aguinaldo. Top-senior officials from both governments attended the ceremony.
Over 17,600 military personnel, including around 111 members of the Australian Defence Force, participated in the series of drills conducted from April 11th to 28th, making it the largest-ever exercise between the two nations. Throughout the exercises, personnel were allowed to work together to support regional stability and global security
The exercises were held in the provinces of Ilocos Norte, Aurora, Zambales, and Antique to increase proficiency in maritime security, amphibious operations, live-fire training, urban operations, aviation operations, counterterrorism operations, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief
US-Philippine relations have relatively eased up under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, who, in February, approved four new sites for EDCA (Enhanced Defence Cooperation Agreement) These sites, identified by the PCO (Presidential Communications Office), are the following: Camilo Osias Naval Base in Sta Ana, Cagayan; Lal-lo Airport in Lal-lo, Cagayan; Camp Melchor de la Cruz in Gamu, Isabela; and Balabac Island in Palawan
In a statement to the Manila Bulletin made by MaryKay Carlson, US Ambassador to the Philippines, "In addition to being unprecedented in terms of size, our forces also introduced cyber and space elements into the exercise scenario, showing that our seven-decade-old alliance is constantly evolving to address 21st-century challenges," highlighting the growth and evolution of US-Philippine ties throughout the years.
Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Huvane, on the significance and importance of these exercises, further elaborated, "Balikatan provides unparalleled opportunities to demonstrate the strength and readiness of the Philippine-US security alliance," which demonstrates America's commitment to the agreement
As the exercises concluded, the Philippine Coast Guard revealed that it was again bullied by several Chinese Vessels near the Ayungin Shoal This is why AFP Chief General Andres Cetino, during the sidelines of the ceremony, called for a more "improved and refined" Balikatan in 2024
These exercises come amid rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific region, specifically between the People's Republic of China and the self-ruling island of Taiwan According to Major General Eric Austin, the exercises will ensure "we are prepared to respond to real-world challenges together"
China's foreign ministry later criticized the joint military drills saying that they "must not interfere in South China Sea disputes, still less harm China's territorial sovereignty, maritime rights and interests, and security interests" The long-scheduled drills got underway as China ended three days of war games around Taiwan, which included precision strikes and blockading the island after Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen met with U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy in Los Angeles
When asked about the combat exercises between American and Filipino forces in the Philippines, the Chinese Embassy in Manila stated that Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said that such drills "should not target any third party and should be conducive to regional peace and stability" Wang did not say how China would respond if it concluded that the US-Philippine security cooperation was hurting Beijing's core interests
Left-wing activists and nationalists have also shared their dismay and opposition to the presence of American Forces in the Philippines "The Philippines is caught in an interimperialist conflict between the US and China," Renato Reyes of the leftwing Bayan alliance said, "We are merely being used as a footstool for American power projection and provocation in the region"
The drills showcase American strength and ability in Asia as the Biden administration strengthens a string of alliances to better counter China, including a possible clash over Taiwan, an island democracy that Beijing claims sovereignty over.
The exercises' goals link with efforts by the Philippines under Marcos to defend its territorial interests in the South China Sea

One of my favorite experiences in my club was the opportunities given to serve God in masses as an altar server and, in other aspects, during meetings What I enjoyed the most were the lessons taught and how we could also apply these in life However, what I deeply enjoyed in my club throughout this school year the most were the simple bonding moments; I love how everyone is enthusiastic and optimistic in what they do and simply being there to guide my fellow juniors as one of them the club's seniors in JHS

We tied knots, a bit odd to be a favorite experience, but this was nostalgic to my past experiences with BSP Because in my experience with boy scouts, I got the chance to go camping, where we learned how to make fire, finished obstacle courses, swam in mud, made knots, and made new friends
The best experience of my club was when we documented the foundation day celebrations Because, in fact, we really had fun taking creative shots and trying to take a picture without the flash even though it was dark in the Magone dome, but even if it was, we made sure to capture everything And lastly, another is the documentation for the Manoag pilgrimage because it tested my knowledge of photography through taking pictures like creative shots, portraits, and landscapes I got to bond more with the photography club members through the pilgrimage since it was the first event we documented Siguro best club experience for me was how lahat kame nagshashare/rant about things that we relate to as club members Lahat kame comfortable with talking with things na nararansan namin at palaging may tawanan samin sa peer counselors Every meeting was the best for me cause we all felt like we were in a safe space While trying to improve on oursleves napapansin rin namin na we were able to help rin others because of the things na tinuro ni maam Elna
Jose Villanueva
The best experiences in my club are whenever there's an event, I get to take pictures and roam around, which also benefits me because I get to appreciate the events more
My club experiences are not limited to club meetings, which made my experiences great
Quentin Davnid
My favourite club experience was when I and other club members sang during teachers' day It was nice to work together and practice with my fellow members And together we sang very nicely, and it felt nice
I think the one club experience i remember so dearly is when we played against the alumni members of the volleyball club As a student who enjoys playing the sport, this experience was both fun and challenging as the past members were really talented and were really trained to excel They displayed teamwork really well, that's why I believe we also picked up a lesson while playing against them
Nischala Potian
As the President of the Volleyball club, my favorite experiences were teaching new players the basics of volleyball and how to play, the connection being developed with clubmates, and the sportsmanship being shown to each other Also, playing volleyball is like an escape on tiring days when I feel different from my usual routine It is a stress reliever Every spike is a way to vent my stress and struggles on that day
In my experience through all the club meetings that we had this SY 2022-2023, for me the best experience that I had is when we met face to face because, after the quarantine era of the whole world, it's hard to cope with how to interact with each other It is the best experience for me because, from them, I remember how I love the Math Subject at the olden times when I was still younger
For me, the best club experience is just the genuine happiness that everyone experiences during club meetings In Guhit Busko, we are taught or to further develop our skills in drawing At first it might look off but if you keep putting your efforts to it, you'll feel proud on how your drawing turned out To add to such a great experience, we are accompanied by Ma'am Escabillas who showed her outmost support to fully bring out our potential in drawing All I can say that these people and all the small moments of happiness are what makes my best club experience
George Coloma
Thursday is one of the most anticipated days in the institution because it is the club meeting day Students are mobilized in different locations where their club is having their meetings
Likewise, this is like a small gathering to meet the club animators and other members after a long tiring day of academic discussions It creates a new family within the Educative Pastoral Community where shared interests are the same for everyone

Memoirs of Bosconians
What makes a Bosconian? Bosconians are smart, tech-savvy, gentlemen, God-centered, and socially responsible, and they always strive for excellence These Bosconians are what keep the school breathing They are the pride and joy of the institution, continuously bringing glory to the name of the school wherever they may go These three Bosconians are students who the school would be proud to call theirs, never failing to live up to, if not surpass the standard set for Bosconians
What defines a Bosconian?
For me, a Bosconian is, first, someone who has God at the center of his life because In Don Bosco, we are taught to be good Christians, and this is what is engraved in our hearts, and it is a quality that we bring with us every day Second is being disciplined because, as Bosconians, we have a lot of tasks that may be academic, technical, or extracurricular To do these tasks, we need to manage our time well, and this is something that I see in a lot of students in our school Lastly is being adaptable to changes because changes are something that we cannot avoid in our lives But as Bosconians, we strive to be better; we should never let circumstances hinder us from achieving the best outcome
What is your favorite experience with your classmates?
My favorite experience with my classmates was our carol fest last December because this was, for me, the first time we worked as a team, and experiencing this made me happy
How do you define your relationship with your teachers?
I would define my relationship with my teachers as friendly because I have never had any difficulties speaking to them or approaching them for any concerns Though I still speak to them with respect, talking to them is as natural as speaking to my friends
What values did you learn from your experiences in extra-curricular activities?
How did the pastoral culture in DB influence you as a person / your core values?
I learned one thing in my extra-curricular activities: never to be afraid to try something out of your comfort zone because, who knows, this might be the answer for you to improve yourself in different aspects The religious culture affected me by strengthening my current values Through the various activities done by the pastoral ministry, like the SAP and Retreat, I have been reminded of what should be done and what I should be as a person This has helped me to engrave my values into my heart, leading me to continue to improve
Where is your go-to place in Don Bosco when you want to think or to be alone?
My go-to place in Don Bosco, when I want to think or to be alone, is beside the football field near the gymnasium The reason for this is that looking at nature or the sky helps me calm down and arrange my thoughts
What are the experiences you want to treasure the most?
The things that I do every day are something that I will hold near my heart, like walking to the canteen or eating with my friends These experiences are something that we hold for granted That’s why it’s important to value them while we can still do them We must value each second that passes by as we never know that the good times have already passed until we’ve reached the end
During stress week, what keeps you sane?
Resting one of the biggest lessons I learned this school year is the importance of rest Giving yourself time to rest and regroup will help you come out better than you were before
Describe the experience of leading your batch in the CDC.
The CDC was the time that I felt the most pressure this year, but I also felt proud that I was chosen to lead all the students in our batch Even though we had just one week to plan and practice, we still came through and brought back the crown A message from Ma’am Cora about leaving our legacy in the record books of the competition inspired me to give it my all in terms of leading the batch This experience gave me a new way of seeing things objectively, and this experience of mine will surely never be forgotten
What can you say about the bonds you’ve formed this S.Y.
Who inspires and motivates you during your last year as a JHS student?
My biggest motivators are, first of all, my family Next are my friends, and, lastly, my teachers They all inspire me to become a better version of myself On my most difficult days, they were there for me cheering me on and helping me get past each challenge I know that I wouldn’t be here without them
This school year created new bonds, but it also strengthened them I became close with people I never expected, and this school year made me feel that I was one with the entire batch The bonds formed this year echo beyond the hallways of our classrooms; even though not everyone will take the same path, I am sure that the bonds created this year will stay with us for a long, long time I will treasure all the relationship I have made this academic year because they honed me to the better version of myself as a Bosconian guided by my friends teachers peers and the institution itself

Describe the grade 10 class president experience.
This is my first time being a class president in all my years at DBTI, so I took this position without experience The first weeks of being a president were the most tiring, but this is how I learned an important lesson, the importance of having people you can rely on My class, 10-Zatti, was the best class that anybody could ever ask for; I felt how throughout the entire school year, we became closer to one another We entered our classroom as classmates, but we now live as brothers There is no better way of satisfaction than seeing how you, as a leader, have made more leaders you know will be better than you This experience has given me lessons that I know will be used even after my time here in DB, but my biggest takeaway is how in 10 or 20 years, I can be proud to say that I was not just the class president of 10-Zatti, but also how proud I am to be classmates with them
How do the education systems in Don Bosco help you as a student?
First, nakaktulong siya sa akin kasi I can go beyond or natatranscend ko yung natututunan ko It does not mean that you got a perfect score on an exam, you are already a smart person The next challenge is saan mo gagamitin yung knowledge na yan? What higher application method will that knowledge be used for Doon ako nachachallenge ng system Next is tinatry ko mag inject ng relgiousity sa pag-aaral ko kahit I’m a Scienceloving or logic-loving person, gusto ko talagang kahit wala akong pinanghahawakan, I just know I’m safe kasi andyan si Lord, yun talaga yung nahubog sa akin ng Don Bosco educational system which is through it all kasama mo si Lord
What can you say about the friends that you’ve made along the way?
What are the highlights of your studies as a Bosconian?
Actually, I can summarize them into three main events first when Sir Paul said ako yung nakaassign para mag gratitude speech nung grade 9 recognition It felt frightening kasi grabe talaga yung stage fright ko and grabe yung anxiety ko as in visible, talagang nagmamanifest yung anxiety ko in a way na hindi ko siya macontrol Second is yung miting de avance, grabe yung tumatak sa akin nun kasi 8 seconds ako nag blackout literal I didn't know what happened as in nagblanko lang ako for 8 seconds which felt like 30 minutes kasi siyempre naka salang ka doon Although shempre nakabawi ako it was kind of traumatic I guess, pero ang mahalaga is nabawi ko siya Through it I’ve learned na hindi naman mahalaga na nablanko ako pero yung kung paano ko na fill yung blank na yun which is through the way I answered And lastly, ang pinaka highlight talaga ang pag kasama ko yung friends ko after class kasi kapag after class parang wala ka nang prinoproblema lalo na kapag after term exams it feels cathartic
How do you maximize your free time as a Bosconian?
I actually can divide this into three categories, friends, family and self Post-school or after dismissial, gumagala talaga kami ng friends ko, nagsasama sama kami is my free time talaga bago ka umuwi recharfged ka na Next is as a family, lagi kaming nagmimisa during Sundays yun, and we love having staycations, aalis kami pupunta kami sa ganitong lugar, mahilig din kaming manood ng movies, so isa rin yun sa kung paano ko sinespend yung free time ko And lastly of course is self, if hindi niyo alam I’m an active runner I run at least thrice a week, and running realy clears my mind Sinusubukan kong tumakbo ng tumakbo ng tumakbo kasi grabe yung effect niya sa akin mentally aside sa physical benefits niya Grabe yung clarity na nakukuha ko sa kanya and shempre inaacompany ko ng tulog I actually sleep a lot, mahilig ako mag takes ng naps
For this gusto ko muna iclarify na hindi lang costudents ang naging friends ko, pero marami din akong naging friends na teachers, non-teaching personnel, and mga friends from the different competitions na nasalihan ko For me, masasabi ko is thank you and I’m grateful that they pushed me to be the best, hindi naman sila naging tutor sa akin but they pushed me to be the best simply because they were there, they were always ready to listen to my rants, my vents and to have those people in your life is something rare and once you have it parang I feel valued na may ganong tao sa paligid ko And, kasi for me naging mahalaga rin na parang, kasi they didn’t treat me as an academic competitor, pero they treated me as a friend, yung trato nila sa akin parang may mga moments na ako yung nagsisisi kasi hindi ko magawa sa kanila ang mga ginagawa nila sa akin Na parang nakakapanghinayang na sila they’re exerting so much effort sa akin sa relationship namin, pero ako hindi ko siya ma reciprocate And then, masasabi ko rin sa kanila is goodluck sa mga co-students ko na magiibang school na Napaka eventful ng next chapters ng buhay natin kasi we’re outside of this enclosed bubble which is Don Bosco
What are your takeaways from the different academic events like the research symposium or the Arts and Literature Talent Festival?
Before I begin, gusto ko mag thank you to sir Dominic Clavia, and sir Aldin Ferasol for granting me these opportunities in my academic career Actually, yung main take-away ko sa mga naexperience kong competitions, is the world is big and we have yet to explore i, We’re kept in a bubble and this bubble makes us closed of sa mundo na parang ito lang tayo, ito nakasanayan natin and nandito lang tayo We must learn to get out of our comfort zones and kaakibat non is hindi naman porket sa dati mong comfort zone ganito naging buhay mo sa labas ng comfort zone mo ganun pa rin No Kung lagi kang nag susucceed sa comfort zone mo, rethink, hindi ka lagi mag susuccceed outside of it Yun yung na learn ko from the academic events Sa tingin ko kasi napakagaling kong tao May ganon akong sense of pride Tapos nung sumabak kami sa symposium, sa ArtLit Festival, nakita ko na parang, “ay, hindi pala ako ganun kagaling when competed against other students from all over the Philippines or all over the batch” Pero ang mahalaga dito is nahohone niya yung soft skills na meron tayo Through these academic events, namamaster natin and ginagamit natin in our daily life
What are your favorite subjects in school and why?
Sa dinamidami ng subjects sa Don Bosco, yung pinaka paborito ko talaga are ICT Software, Science, and English Sali na rin natin yung research since they’re overlapping First is Science, since I was young favorite ko yung Science Kahit anong mangyari I just enjoy it pero ngayon kasi mas lalo ko siya na enjoy kasi ang saya mag turo ni Ma’am Joy especially with the addition of Sir Christian na practice teacher namin They make the lesson enjoyable, yung Science namin this year yun yung parang subject na papasok ka ng sobrang excited tapos ayaw na ayaw mo matapos because you’re enjoying it Na kahit ultimo nagtetest kayo ayaw mo matapos yung oras You just enjoy it nanghihinayang ako na twice a week lang kami nagkikita Next of course is yung software Software kasi doon ko naaapply yung technical skills ko which is through software supposedly Actually dagdag pa dito yung hardwares since overlapping din naman sila Namamaster ko yung pagkagusto ko sa digital world Mahilig akong mag explore explore im curious as a person and napepeak yung curiosity ko ng software tska hardware pero of course sometimes nahihirapan ako Lastly of course is English and Research For these subjects gusto ko yung sa English I enjoy literature lalo na kapag poem siya Mahilig ako sa poems I love creative poems, I love to make poems Mahilig din kasi ako mag critique ng paper so actually isa rin yun sa hobbies ko kumuha ako ng isang text or story from social media tapos icicritique ko siya, then for research, I’m naturally curious Sa research di pwedeng curious ka lang eh, dapat may purpose rin yung curioisity mo Naenjoy ko yung research kasi ang hirap niya pero ang fulfilling niya na parang at the end may reward, which is what I get from research

Memoirs of a Lay Mission Partner
Dominic Kean Calavia
I have had many first-time experiences at Don Bosco Technical InstituteMakati, but this one is one of the best I was enrolled in a public school during my education years, so I have no retreat experiences I am not envious, but a part of me wants to experience this event that will change my life. Likewise, being a teacher at Don Bosco granted my wish I was beyond excited about our Spiritual Learning Journey in Cebu and Bohol
When there is Crisis, Christ is;
We rode a plane going to Don Bosco Retreat House in Cebu. Different expressions were evident on our faces There is excitement, happiness, nervousness, and tiredness One of the significant moments on the first day of our talk was when Father asked us to pick a word or a phrase from the texts presented The majority of the teachers picked “Rest” Indeed, the pandemic and the post-pandemic era challenged us in many ways Rest is like a precious diamond we would like to experience amid hardships and crises Furthermore, Rest can be an individual activity, but also Rest can be a person or a group of people around us Likewise, A rest between a crisis is embracing Christ and the people around us using Synodality.
Be little to grow
On the second day of our retreat, it felt like my strength had returned My energy and social battery are full as we discussed the Ten Commandments in simplifying our Spiritual Vocabulary
The first one caught my attention as it discussed that Gratitude is the basis of all holiness With that, my reflection began I am beyond thankful for those people who never left me These people gave me the strength and motivation to pursue things I love and need I will take this as advantage to make myself better and steadfast as I conquer my mission as a Salesian Educator However, I am still grateful for those people who left me because I made that an inspiration to be better as a person not for other people but for the best version of myself This aspect is important as I face my students
As one family
The Spiritual Learning Journey became more memorable because of the people around me Our bond solidified from my immediate circle, the English Learning Area, because of our sharings and reflections. We are more than just English and Research Teachers We are part of the EPC community that hones the faith and character of ourselves, our students, and the people around us
The food became more enjoyable as the JHS Department shared it with laughter and enjoyment The island hopping becomes more than just a vacation, but a voyage of souls that transcends with love, hope, faith, and family
I have many first times in Don Bosco. As the day passed, I learned I was more than lucky because of these institutions. There are many opportunities to grow Many people will join you on a journey This spiritual learning journey was one of the first times that left a mark on my heart as a Salesian Educator.
Growing is our sole responsibility, but growing with the people around us is also an important part of our life. Likewise, one of the best things that happened to me was my Faith Family We are from different areas but share the same sentiments, struggles, and reflections We are related and become more relevant in terms of sharing We are growing together by learning from different perspectives and experiences.
This spiritual learning journey is an escape from a tiring world and a formation of faith and values This momentous event shows that the institution provides holistic development for its stakeholders, especially the teachers

SAP's core: A life-long encounter
What is the Social Action Program?
For many Bosconians, it’s just a school activity Maybe for some, it’s a field trip
And for some, it is a mere completion of requirements. But at its core, the SAP is a way for us to step into the world of the less fortunate
By listening to the stories of the community members, we can sympathize with their struggles, such as the experiences of the families in Calauan
We can bond with the communities, sharing our experiences while promoting oneness and camaraderie
Of course, there is the essence of giving We can share our blessings with them, and in return, we also learn priceless lessons The SAP is something that every student should experience.
We hope that the trips to Calauan opened the eyes of many This has been the Bosconian Journal’s coverage of the Grade 10 Social Action Program
Meliora Eligo, Viva Don Bosco!
"Partners" were what we were asked to call the people we visited at Don Bosco Calauan on April 22, 2023, for our Social Action Program (SAP)
We called them partners instead of donees because, unlike a donee who receives donations without giving back, the Bosconians and Lay Mission Partners who participated received something in return: maturity and formation
It was an ecstatic yet sleepy morning when we departed from Don Bosco Makati We rode two buses composed of two different sections I had mixed emotions about this because this is one of the things I look forward to as a Bosconian I believe it is right to immerse ourselves in the various struggles of the community partners Likewise, these are their narratives that are worth learning and worth-sharing
Often, we encounter instances where we Bosconians act immaturely
Occasionally, you catch Bosconians praying for suspension due to heavy rain Even I am guilty of this But going to Calauan and hearing how families were forced to leave their old homes and move to Calauan due to heavy rains that their homes could not defend against really opened our eyes to the reality of those in need
Presence is an essence.
Aside from the monetary donations and gift-giving, presence is one of the important things to do This concept is the umbrella term for the effort of time and action As Bosconians, to be fair, the quantity of things and the amount of money matter, but the presence in this kind of event is immeasurable
Our presence is important because it implies the effort we allotted to receive formation and reflection on our partnered community This presence is beyond the monetary gift we gave because this is an embodiment of immersing ourselves in the partnered community
As One Community, As One Family
As one community, this was a big step for us to learn that we are beyond lucky to have these resources as easier as we want As one community, we know the importance of putting our shoes in the shoes of our partnered families to empathize and sympathize with their struggles We are a community that forms a family, which makes God the center of our relationship
We were asked by Sir Rommel how did we find God during the SAP Program The question was complicated as it seemed However, if you know the essence of SAP, you know the answer by heart.
I learned that I found God in three ways First, working as one section We worked as one to raise monetary funds for our partnered family Camaraderie and cooperation were witnessed throughout the process Second, Reflection and Formation are game changers Reflection is part of my everyday routine, but the reflection I had during the encounter was worth treasuring This reflection helped me build a better foundation for my formation
Through various reflection, Enzo Balmes from 10- Calazans shared his thought about the second family encounter of their section with their partner family
pamilya, maraming realizations ang dumating sa amin Una ay kung gaano tayo kabiyaya o kaswerte dahil meron tayo ng mga bagay na kailangan natin."
During our visit to Calauan, my section was introduced to the Gutierrez family We first met Nanay Marie, who has six children, four boys, and two girls Her husband, unfortunately, was not present at the time because he was working The eldest son, a tenth grader, was also not there because he had an event to attend for school Nanay Marie’s sharing taught me two very important things: always giving and loving your parents
I would first like to discuss Nanay Marie’s point on always giving To give some background information, her family first resided in Lemery, Batangas She said life in Batangas was even more difficult than their current life in Laguna Because of the volcanic eruption in Taal, they were forced to leave everything behind in Batangas. The COVID-19 pandemic only reinforced their move to Calauan, Laguna Because her family is in Calauan, the family decided to live permanently in the municipality Despite the financial support they got from Nanay Marie’s siblings, the family still had difficulty providing for themselves until Don Bosco came into their lives
Though the family received much support and help from many people, Nanay Marie said it felt wrong that her family kept only receiving Thus, she imparted to herself and her family to always give back what they receive Despite having so little, she always gives back to the community For instance, in exchange for her family’s meals, she volunteered to wash dishes as repayment This has taught me always to give back and pay it forward, even if you only have a little “Do to others what you would do to yourself,” she said
Second is the importance of parents As a mother of six, Nanay Marie has much experience as a parent. She told us to always respect and love our parents, no matter how harsh they seem She told us that when our parents scolded us, it was because we did something wrong, and they wouldn’t want us to do it again They still love us despite how hard they may seem on us They only want what is best for us, so they tell us to correct us whenever we do something bad

The Don Bosco Makati Debate Society (DBMDC) conducted a series of seminars and workshops for selected Bosconians in coordination with the De La Salle Debate Society, The Bosconian Journal, and the English Club last November to May 2023
These meaningful experiences honed the bosconians to unleash their potential as debated inside and outside the institution The Bosconian Journal asked selected officers from the DBMDS about their learning experiences Indeed, those training and workshops honed them in various possible ways they could ever imagine
The cheerdance competition: the most competitive week of the year
Gavin Phillip Navarro
The cheerdance competition is an annual event held by the Student Council of the Junior High School Department that gives each batch a different theme to portray in their respective field demonstrations
The CDC has evolved from just a mere competition becoming one of the most awaited events of the students, faculty, and management At this point, it has become an essential part of the Bosconian high school experience
That takes us to the second value, which is cooperation Each cheerdance performance is one big masterpiece with a hundred working parts Every part needs to function to its highest degree, ensuring they give it all they’ve got Cooperation is not just about doing your part but having trust that the other people working with you will be able to do theirs, which is an important value to learn to grow as a person
Debate training or deb soc helped me be disciplined, patient, and open-minded as a Bostonian Because of debate, I must be updated on the news and current events Also, It gave me the ability to be able to listen to other people properly, for example, in listening to other people's debates Lastly, it made me open-minded and open to any discussion about topics since the debate has a lot of statements and views on different topics This helps me improve my perspective a lot
Gerald Segovia (Grade 10- Versiglia)
Participating in the event sparks a level of competitiveness from the students and teachers you will never encounter daily, creating a tense air that pushes each competitor to give it their all Knowing all this, what makes cheer dance an essential experience for junior high school Bosconians?
From the practices to the performance itself, the CDC instills certain values into students, and even teachers, that are important to their growth as individuals
And last but not least is the creativity sparked from the countless hours spent curating each performance These are the times when the brightest minds are challenged to create something that has never been done before
Everyone has a sense of creativity, and sometimes it just takes the cheerdance competition to tap into it
This year’s CDC, entitled “DanceTuneNation” with a theme of “Continents around the World,” made history by crowning two champions Grades 7 (Americas) & 10 (Asia-Pacific) shared the top of the podium together, lifting up the trophy for the first-ever tie finish
As a student and member of the debate society, debate training has helped me a lot When it comes to understanding an aspect of the world I never really knew or learned about It taught me the topics such as Global Relations, the Criminal Justice system, and the forms of leadership and their respective debate topics So, I wouldn't say it helped me only as a Bostonian and it helped me as a person to understand this world of ours
-Nathan Fernandez (Grade 10- Rua)
The first and most treasured value is the importance of unity. The camaraderie and teamwork it takes to pull off a stunning performance require high unity and oneness It strengthens the bond of a batch that would otherwise be separated by the walls of their classrooms It’s a chance for all the classes to be on the same side of the fight and show what they can do as one entity
As the years go by, the CDC continues to cement itself as a non-negotiable part of the calendar, brewing excitement for every new school year
As the times evolve, the cheerdance competition will surely evolve with it It will only get better and better from here
The debate training helped me become a better speaker and helped me in forming good speaking skills
Zachary Mationg (Grade 9- Namuncura)
For me, being a Debate Society member helped me become more open-minded I get to see other views and perspectives of many people and get new knowledge from different topics like politics, economy, morals, and many more It also helped me be more confident speaking and collaborating with other members

The calling: Teachers create other professions
May 1 celebrates International Labor Day, recognizing the hard work and struggles of different jobs and professions worldwide In this era where the Philippines is on a rollercoaster ride of economic aspects, teachers are recognized as the noblest job, yet these are underappreciated work
Being a teacher is one of the toughest jobs in the world Aside from being a teacher, they act like parents, entertainers, talents, healthcare workers, and other professionals to suffice the needs of their students Teachers share the burden with the students without letting the students see the struggles of teachers In this way, resiliency will take over because, as the model inside the room, they must project themselves in the most positive way they can Yet, others overlook the importance of teachers with just minimal error
Teachers teach beyond classroom discussions The topics are structured from the beginning, but teachers inject life-long learning into their students through values integration and real-life experiences Some students might say on the internet that they let the teachers talk about their personal life to kill time Still, some teachers love to share personal experiences related to their discussion to give vivid imagination about the topic.
Teachers only interfere with proper processes because they make sure that proper intervention must take place to help the students holistically. Yet, teachers are happy with these, but they sometimes forget about themselves Those hardships and struggles are being disregarded to maintain the meaningful lifelong teaching and learning mechanisms inside and outside the classrooms
Teachers put effort into their teaching materials and other instructional tools There are costly materials, but teachers disregard them for meaningful learning They are among the most innovative people in this world who deserve proper recognition As society progresses, teachers adapt and adopt new systems to provide lifelong learning to their students Yet, teachers experience situations where their money is insufficient but still manage to provide something for the class
This narrative speaks for all the teachers around the world. Whether they are from highly civilized places or far-flung areas Teachers deserve recognition and concrete solution for their problems Teachers are not just teachers that teach lessons As time passes, teachers produce other professions that inspire many people in many ways

Many wishes are cast upon the night, As two hearts burn with love so bright, But the world is cruel and deems it naive, And their longing is but a dream they weave And yet they love with innocence and ease, As life's harsh truths they're yet to seize, The world grows harder as time goes by, Their love put to test, but still they try Heavy hearts and mistakes that weigh, Flickering flame left forlorn in dismay, Hoping against hope that it would be enough, To emerge from the storm, resilient and tough

Is love really only just a feeling?

A short moment of encounter, A life-long formation and reflection
It was a momentous event for every Bosconian to immerse themselves in the community members with that, the Don Bosco Technical Institute Makati sealed a partnership in previous years This milestone cultivates meaningful experiences and life-learnings to understand the purpose of life with God
This recent outreach was eye-opening for me as a student and, I believe, for our entire section It showed us the other side of life, which not many people talk about, as we do not live the same life as them and do not have the same struggles as these families I realized that it is our duty as a society to ensure that those facing difficulties have access to the resources they need
Playing games along the side of our family and eating amongst them showed me the simple joys of life and the things that I take for granted The impact of these programs cannot be overstated; they can be the difference between life and death for those in desperate situations
Furthermore, I was also taking pictures for our school's publication at that time However, the facial features and emotions were beyond publication materials These were the evidence of their struggles in their community It was a symbol of resiliency amidst the worsening state of our country Likewise, I realized that I could make a change
As someone who has seen the devastating effects of poverty and inequality, let's do everything possible to support struggling people We cannot sit idly by and watch our fellow humans suffer; we must act and make a difference We can be part of the difference we want to achieve
Every small step is equivalent to a big impact in the future Do not be afraid to help in the most possible way you can It is an act of extending our hands to the needy while learning about the meaningful purpose of life and the importance of finding God within it in every day and every momentous event in our lives
