Health Goals

How to make them stick! By Charlotte Meschede - Nutritionist

Usually, our health goals bounce around various personal health issues such as weight loss (the most common), becoming fitter and more active, and last but not least, making sure our emotional well-being is better than it’s ever been before. It seems like a Déjà vu from each goal for the years or months before. The list is a long one, starting with lifestyle changes, diet and weight, career goals and relationships. We try our best. However, as time goes by, we might be feeling burnt out and give up. The list that we thought was doable and possible, especially in January when everyone makes resolutions now appears to be insurmountable. With winter slowly creeping closer, this might be the best time to start working on health and fitness goals. If you can stick to an exercise routine and eating healthy foods during the cold months, you should be able to manage it more easily when it warms up again, and before you realise it, you have turned your new behaviour into habits. So what can we do to make these resolutions stick? Firstly, simplify! Take the most important goal and make it attainable. Setting unrealistic goals will set you up for failure!

Setting Realistic Goals for your health The most popular health goals are exercising more (50% of the 4

Mar- Apr 2021 / to order call 011-675-0477

population), saving money (49%), eating more healthily (43%) and losing weight (37%). Since this article is not of a financial nature, we are going to focus on increasing our fitness, eating more healthily and losing weight.

Fitness Goals

The rule of thumb is that you need to do a minimum of 150 minutes per week in order for exercise to have a beneficial impact on both your weight and your health. What exercise I hear you say? Well any exercise is better than none, but in today’s crazy, busy and hectic lifestyle, planning to do hours of gym, running or any other physical activity can sometimes be too difficult to sustain long term. First and foremost, decide what type of exercise you like doing, and what is sustainable in terms of both your time restrictions and your budget. Secondly, plan your exercise as if you were planning an assignment. Put specific times in your diary and work out what you are going to do each time. Thirdly, start slowly and build up over a set period of time. Even 15 minutes a day is a good start. You also do not have to join an expensive gym, pay the earth for a personal trainer

CELL FOOD

or run a marathon in order to get fit. Frequency is as important as duration, so doing 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week is a lot more effective than doing 2 ½ hours in one long session on a Saturday. Fourthly, exercise with a family member or friend, if not every time, at least one or two sessions per week. This makes it not only more fun, but also makes you more accountable. If you do not know what exercise you should be doing, then speak to a health coach and get some professional advice. Be careful not to injure yourself as this is a sure way of losing all hope of achieving those fitness resolutions prematurely. The AIM products that can help to keep you healthy and get the most out of your body from an exercise point of view include AIM Peak Endurance, which provides ATP for energy. Proancynol 2000 and AIMega to keep your inflammation levels to a minimum. In order to keep you motivated, remind yourself of the benefits of exercise: • Reduces risk of coronary heart disease (heart attack) and stroke by 35% • Reduces the risk of Type 2 diabetes by 50% • There is a 50% lower risk of colon cancer in those who exercise regularly • Exercise lowers the risk of breast cancer by 20% • Individuals who exercise regularly are 83% less likely to suffer from osteoarthritis • Hip fractures are 68% less likely to occur in regular exercisers • Exercise releases endorphins which are your ‘happy hormones’ and help keep depression at bay

Eating more healthily

Firstly, identify what eating habits you have that are unhealthy. Change ONE thing at a time but remain focussed. Get to know yourself better and admit to habits that won’t change and try and find some that you CAN change. Setting measurable goals and being consistent is key. Apply the SMART principle which is as follows: To make sure your goals are clear and attainable, each one should be: • Specific (simple, sensible, significant) • Measurable (meaningful, motivating) • Achievable (agreed, attainable) • Relevant (reasonable, realistic, resourced, results-based) • Time-bound (time-based, time limited, time-sensitive) AT ALL TIMES REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE WORTH IT AND YOU CAN ONLY BE THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF!

Going the

Distance By Andre de Beer, AIM Preferred Member

I grew up in South Africa with an older brother and two younger sisters. Financially, times were tough. The first time in my life that I had three meals a day was when I joined the army. Although we battled, I was very blessed in sport and realized that it would take me places. In 1982, I fell in love with the sport of triathlon—swimming, biking and running. I had swum an Olympic qualifying time in 1976, but isolation kept us out of international competition until 1992, when I was included in the national team. As for education, I completed my law degree, studied human movement science and furthered my studies on performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs), which caused the ruin of so many athletes. My main golden rule is to know your own body and be conscious of what you put in it. I had a passion for nutrition, and I started to concentrate on natural products.

6

Over the years, I have had major health issues. In 1996, foot melanoma required having chemotherapy. Surgery to remove this cancer resulted in an infected wound that almost made me lose my foot. Then in 1999, I went through brutal chemotherapy after a diagnosis of testicular cancer. Miraculously, prayers from a teammate made it go away. In 2019, I was diagnosed with urethral carcinoma, so I went through additional brutal chemo.

CELL FOOD

Even with these health challenges, as of 2019, I have done over 60 full-distance Ironman events as well as other types. I have traveled the world doing Ironman, inspiring people and getting inspired by athletes who have been in even worse situations than me. At the beginning of lockdown in 2020, a dear friend introduced me to AIM, starting us off with BarleyLife, FloraFood and a whole range of products. She believed that this was my first step to a change in lifestyle. Within three days of using BarleyLife and Flora Food, my wife noticed a big change in me. For training, I take RediBeets and will soon add Peak Endurance. My recovery is on another level, and I can feel the difference AIM has made in my life every day. In all my years of research, I never came across a company with as much backup, passion and knowledge as AIM. My aim is to do another Ironman event in the future, and I’m very excited because I believe that anything is possible and all praise to God.

Testimonials should not be construed as representing results everybody can achieve. This is not the opinion of The AIM Companies and is a personal opinion and experience of the consumer. nutrition that works / www.theaimcompanies.com

Ways to Support Your Immune System

1 Regulate Sleep and Stress

When we sleep, our body heals, repairs and restores itself, so do everything you can to get 7–9 hours of sleep nightly. Composure is a calming blend of herbs that can help you to avoid sleepless nights. Learn to manage your stress levels, which suppress your immune system and the ability to fight infections.

2 Avoid Refined Sugars

Eliminate or reduce your intake of refined sugars, which suppress the immune system and can diminish the performance of white blood cells and increase inflammatory markers.

3 Stay Hydrated and Know Your Vitamin D Number

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! When you don’t drink enough water, your mucous membranes become dehydrated, and you become more susceptible to viruses. Natural sunlight is still the best form of vitamin D, which is critical for immune function.

10

Mar- Apr 2021

4 Ramp Up Your Fruits and Vegetables

Aim to eat fruits and vegetables that are bright in colors to increase your intake of immune-enhancing plant nutrients. If you are not eating enough vegetables, then mix the Garden Trio in a blender bottle with cold water. Or for an extra boost of vegetable goodness, add these whole-food concentrates to smoothies.

5 Take High-Quality Probiotics

The gut microbiota is a dynamic ecosystem that aids digestion and immune function. FloraFood is an excellent source of probiotics that increase good gut bacteria. It helps balance the internal pH of the body, strengthening your immune system. Excerpted from an article by Leré Robinson, AIM Star Sapphire Director in Irmo, South Carolina

HEALTHY ATTITUDE

The Healthy Cell Concept’s Attitude Avenue How you cope with stress depends on your state of mind. The right attitude can go a long way in keeping worries at bay and not being overwhelmed by uncertainty. The AIM Healthy Cell Concept™

It’s no coincidence that attitude is one of the Healthy Cell Concept’s five avenues. Along with food, exercise, environment and protection, attitude plays an important role in managing stress and maintaining good health. Your emotional state directly affects your mental and physical well-being.

A Stroll Down Attitude Avenue

You may know people who seemingly have it all but whose negative outlook impacts their joy of being alive. Then there of those who may have very little by comparison, yet they radiate a joyful lifeforce. Who is likely to be better at managing stress? Effective stress management requires positive thinking. Now this might come across as lightweight advice, but it’s

true that an optimistic outlook helps you to cope better with the stressors that life inevitably tosses your way. Even the Mayo Clinic confirms that positive thinking translates into many health benefits. 1 Putting positive thinking into practice can make even the most pessimistic among us see the light at the end of the tunnel. And that’s an outlook that everyone can benefit from on a regular basis. Maintain a positive attitude for a lifetime of healthy cells. 1 bit.ly/AforAttitude

Healthy Weight Management

with AIM By Charlotte Meschede - Nutritionist

Why is this so important? Being overweight has become a major concern for health professionals. The World Health Organisation published a fact sheet with scary information: • •

14

Worldwide obesity has nearly tripled since 1975. In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight. Of these over 650 million were obese. 39% of adults aged 18 years and over were overweight in 2016, and 13% were obese. Most of the world’s population live in countries where overweight and obesity kills more people than underweight. 38 million children under the age of 5 were overweight or obese in 2019. Over 340 million children and adolescents aged 5-19 were overweight or obese in 2016. Statistics (2018) in SA indicate that 68% of women aged 15 years and older are overweight or obese. A more recent assessment (2019), The Indigo Wellness Index, compiled by Bloomsbury Economics is one of the most comprehensive to date, covering 191 countries across the globe. The ten measures were life expectancy, high blood pressure, and risk of diabetes, obesity, depression, happiness, alcohol

use, tobacco use, inactivity and government spending. Sadly, South Africa was ranked the unhealthiest country, whilst Canada came out on top as the healthiest country. The latest statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) show that South Africans have a 25% probability of dying from cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes or chronic respiratory disease between the ages of 30 and 70 years. The WHO also found that more than 28% of South African adults were obese - the highest obesity rate in SubSaharan Africa!

What should we do about it?

The answer is a simple one. Lose weight, eat less and exercise more! But we ALL know how hard this can be and all the information and so-called expert advice out there is overwhelming and often incorrect. My advice is take one step at a time and to find a plan that suits your lifestyle, your budget and your family. Before you find what works for you, let us look at a few facts to steer you in the right direction.

CELL FOOD

The Energy Balance Equation

This is the most obvious reason for weight gain or weight loss. Energy balance represents the difference between energy intake (number of calories eaten) and energy expenditure (number of calories used for exercise, basic metabolic processes and normal daily activities). When the energy intake exceeds the energy expenditure, there is a positive energy balance, which results in weight gain. When the energy intake is below the energy expenditure, there is a negative energy balance and weight loss results. Over the long term, energy balance is maintained in weight-stable individuals, even though on a day-today basis this balance may sometimes be positive and sometimes negative. Although life is not always that simple, basic manipulation of the energy balance equation will yield weight loss or gain. For example, if someone wishes to lose weight, it is important to increase the energy expenditure relative to the energy intake or decrease energy intake below daily energy expenditure. The opposite would be true if an individual is trying to achieve weight gain. The most important factor when it comes to energy balance is to understand what YOU need to eat every day to maintain your weight and how much exercise YOU need to do on a weekly basis in order to stay fit and keep your energy expenditure as high as possible.

The Basics of Good Nutrition

Knowing which foods to eat, how they affect your body and what foods you need to avoid is crucial to get you started. In a nutshell, your body needs 3 basic nutrients, carbohydrates, protein and fats. These are called macronutrients. Carbohydrate-rich foods include starchy vegetables, grains and fruit. Protein-rich

foods include meat, eggs, chicken, fish and legumes (chickpeas, lentils, dried beans and peas). Fats that need to be included in the diet are raw nuts and seeds, avocados, olive oil and fatty fish. Dairy foods such as milk, yoghurt and cheese can provide protein, carbohydrates and fats. Vitamins, minerals, trace elements and all those other compounds that have health benefits like anti-oxidants (vitamin C and E, phytochemicals and many others) are called micronutrients. These are found in foods like fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, eggs, dairy foods and raw nuts and seeds. One of the major problems with a westernized diet is that many of the foods eaten on a daily basis are nutrientpoor and calorie-dense. What this means is that they contain too many calories and not enough nutrition. As dieticians we refer to these foods as empty calories! Another major issue is the lack of fibre in the diet as much of the starchy foods eaten are from refined grains (all the fibre has been removed) with an abundance of sugar and other additives added to make the food taste nice, but sadly does nothing for the nutritional value of the diet. Also the tendency these days to eat low-carb diets means that many of the natural fibres are removed from the diet. It is vital to replace the fibre in the daily diet as this is essential for the efficient functioning of the digestive tract. In the gut are millions of bacteria which need a constant supply of fibres in order to remain present and help the body prevent the build-up of pathogenic bacteria and other substances in the bowel. AIM Fit n Fiber is a comprehensive source of all forms of fibre which help keep these beneficial bacteria in the correct balance. Interestingly enough, lack of sufficient good bacteria in the gut has

nutrition that works / www.theaimcompanies.com

15

CELL FOOD

been cited as a cause of obesity. AIM FloraFood will also help to replenish these good bacteria and I frequently use the combination of the two products in weight management. For many people an adequate supply of good quality proteins is difficult. Furthermore, there is a great deal of controversy around high-protein diets or diets high in animal protein. Since production of animal foods like beef, lamb and poultry is not sustainable due to the amount of land required for grazing and costs of processing, many people have turned to plant proteins as alternatives. Eating ‘cleaner’ foods is definitely more favourable. In order to ensure an adequate protein intake from healthy sources, AIM produced ProPeas, which is a vegetable protein concentrate made from peas. No discussion on nutrition is complete without bringing the need for essential fatty acids. Since most of us do not have an abundant supply of fatty fish and many people do not eat fish for various reasons such as cost or taste, making sure that you get enough of these compounds in the diet is difficult without supplementation. AIMega is a concentrated source of these vital fatty acids. So there you have the basics! Now the most important step is to put all these into action. Here are a few steps to get you going: 1. Identify how much you would like to lose or establish a realistic goal so that you can plan ahead. 2. If the weight loss required is more than 5 kg, break it up into 5 kg phases and so that the goal is not too far off each time 16

Mar- Apr 2021 / to order call 011-675-0477

3. Identify what your weaknesses are and start by eliminating those from your daily intake. 4. Avoid sugar at all costs 5. Clean up your pantry: get rid of any sugar-laden foods and drinks (biscuits, cakes, sweets, chocolates, cold drinks, chips, etc.) 6. Start stocking up with healthy foods that fit into your budget 7. Plan your meals and shop accordingly 8. Set up an exercise routine. You don’t have to join an expensive gym. Exercise can be achieved through walking, jogging, cycling and swimming as well as home-based sessions from many online fitness sessions. The more you diarise and plan your exercise, the more likely you are to stick to it. If you leave it to chance when or if you have time, it won’t happen. 9. Take ONE day at a time. If you have a bad day, then start again the next day. Don’t let one slip-up ruin all your weight loss plans. 10. Don’t get fixated on weight and weigh yourself every day as weight varies due to fluid balance, hormonal influences, temperature and many other variables. Only weigh yourself and measure your waist circumference ONCE a week on the same day of the week at the same time.

GinkgoSense: An Ashwagandha Good Change!

The reformulation of GinkgoSense was officially announced in 2020. Changes to the formula include the addition of ashwagandha. This revered herbal ingredient has been used for thousands of years in Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine in India. However, public awareness of the stress-relieving benefits of ashwagandha is fairly recent in other parts of the world.

As a result of its effectiveness compared to other adaptogenic herbs, ashwagandha is on its way to becoming the next big thing in plant-based ingredients, just like curcumin, which is also a recent addition to the GinkgoSense formula.

Helping Your Body to Adapt

AIM goes out of its way to do its research and occasionally make formulaic changes that naturally enhance a product’s effectiveness. Tapping into thousands of years of ashwagandha use that eventually led to modern studies of this adaptogenic herb, AIM knew the timing was right to provide even more health benefits to Members by enhancing GinkgoSense with ashwagandha.

Ashwagandha is particularly wellknown for relieving stress due to its adaptogenic properties. Adaptogens help your body to handle all kinds of stressors that can affect your state of mind and health. Stress is directly related to cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. As an adaptogen, ashwagandha may help to inhibit the release of cortisol from the adrenal glands, assisting the body in not overreacting. When your nervous system is alarmed by excessive stress, the presence of ashwagandha in GinkgoSense helps to extend your body’s phase of resistance that allows it to adapt to the presence of stressors.

The Journey

Home

Shared by Marcelle Meijer, AIM Director

Upon my return from the U.S. 18 months ago, I was at a crossroad in my career. In search of more direction, I enrolled in a life coaching program. On this journey of discovery and soul searching, it became very clear what resonated with me and what my choice of a life path would be. When I met my Sponsor, an AIM Chairman’s Club Director, our mutual love for transforming lives and an acute understanding of the value and importance of optimal health made us an instant match. I was deeply touched by the story of how AIM started, the integrity of the company and the solid, stable foundation of its 38-year-old culture. My mission to lead a life of purpose is inspired by the testimonials from people whose health has improved by taking AIM products. I can personally relate.

Taking these products had a beneficial effect, which included giving me a flat tummy. I am also using Renewed Balance and Composure, which I will continue on a permanent basis. What’s more, my daughters and I are experimenting with RediBeets, CoCoa LeafGreens, ProPeas and BarleyLife. We love incorporating them into healthy, nutritious smoothies. I have never been happier or more inspired, and I truly look forward to adding value to my amazing AIM team here in South Africa.

After suffering from bloating and constipation for many years, my Sponsor suggested the cleansing combination of Herbal Fiberblend, Herbal Release, FloraFood and Para 90.

BarleyLife is the

Best

By Jemma Badenhorst, AIM Member

I just love my AIM products. At first, I have to admit I was reluctant to try new products, but now they are part of the daily routine in our household with the benefits they bring into our lives. My absolute favourite is BarleyLife. It’s all about the nutrients in it and the way AIM takes every measure of quality, such as harvesting the young barley grass at night when its nutritional value is the highest. Just think about that for a second. While we relax at home having dinner, AIM is working hard to get the best quality into their products for our consumption. It’s so evident when compared to anything else on the market today. They do not compromise on quality. BarleyLife is really the all-rounder that we never knew we needed, and now we don't want to go without it. Thank you, AIM, for going the extra mile with the quality you bring. And I can't wait to try out my new Proancynol 2000 and just LOVE the new look! Testimonials should not be construed as representing results everybody can achieve. AIM-azing

My Journey

By Raeesa Jada - AIM Director

Health and wellness was always something that I had a deep passion for but it wasn’t something that I had ever considered going into as a business, until AIM. My Sponsor introduced me to the AIM products during my first pregnancy. I loved the way AIM made me feel and loved knowing that I was giving my baby such incredible nourishment. The garden trio was a life saver for me post partum as it gave me all the energy that I needed dealing with a new born! I was hooked on these amazing products and decided that I wanted to give the business side a go (with a whole lot of encouragement from my mum.) I started sharing my love, passion and knowledge with everyone I knew and my business grew from there! I started a group with the BarleyLife and I take such joy in watching this group grow. I now have a team of incredible ladies who share the same passion and zest that I have for the products and in turn are sharing it with others. What a beautiful thing! I am so blessed that I get to work from home, doing what I love whilst being around my two beautiful children. I love what AIM has done for us as a family. My children have never seen the inside of a doctor’s room and I credit that to amazing nutrition. I love 20

helping mums make better nutritional choices. It makes me so happy when a mama says to me “My child has been well all year! “ My husband who used to suffer from chronic sinus can now smell the flowers - so to speak. My AIM journey has been incredible. Each day I learn more and more and, in an effort, to better myself I am now studying Nutritional Advisory. I am so thankful to AIM for changing our health, wealth and wellness and I am very excited to see what 2021 will bring.

Zandru in the Wind By Janine Durrant, Blue Diamond Director

Zandru lives on a wildlife farm in South Africa. He loves the outdoors and can run like the wind. As a matter of fact, once he gets running on the open stretches of farm roads, pretty much nothing will stop him, except when he spots an animal. He has a strong immune system and boundless energy. From time to time, he gets a stuffy nose or a cough; however, he bounces back to full throttle quickly. When he was months old, his mom, Bonnie, started rubbing a little BarleyLife powder onto his gums, which soothed him through the teething process. This began his love for the “feel good” green powder.

Just like Bonnie, parents can feel good about giving the Garden Trio to their children. This source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, chlorophyll, enzymes and phytonutrients provides an abundance and diversity of beneficial nutrients for growing bodies. Young Zandru is a testament to this AIM nutrition, and the Garden Trio will continue to help power his runs in the fresh air and sunlight of South Africa.

Now that Zandru is old enough to open lids, the Garden Trio has to be kept out of his reach. Otherwise, once the lids are off, the eating begins. Each morning, Zandru asks for his green, orange and red barley. Bonnie lets him spoon his different colored “barleys” into his bowl, allowing him to play an active role in developing a healthy habit. He loves eating this dry powder mix and, on occasion, uses it as body powder. Testimonials should not be construed as representing results everybody can achieve.
