“The Nightmare Factory is Eastern NC’s Premiere Haunted Attraction. It is a walk-through haunted attraction based on a turn-of-the-century industrial complex that manufactured a wide array of “questionable’ products in the early 1900’s. Burnt to the ground in 1923 by its tortured workers, “Albert Knight’s Factory” became one of American history’s greatest cover-ups.

The remains of the Factory were rediscovered in 2007, and the ghosts now welcome new visitors on a journey through the terrifying abandoned excavation site. Featuring a range of live actors, horror movie scares, and Hollywood quality special effects. This interactive haunt is unlike anything in the world! Experience the fear with sights, sounds, smells…even touch! Open every year in October. Call us for more info. Buy tickets online at our website.”

A Soft but Touching Fall Story

The old man, Silas, sat on his porch, a worn-out woolen blanket over his knees. The air, crisp and tasting of woodsmoke, carried the soft scuff of falling leaves across the yard. The maple tree, his wife’s favorite, was a bonfire of crimson and gold, and each leaf that spiraled down felt like a whispered memory.

Silas watched the leaves collect on the path that led to the road, a path he no longer walked. His wife, Elara, had walked that path a year ago and hadn’t come back. Their shared routines, once as predictable as the turning of seasons, had unraveled. The silence that now filled the house was a different kind of quiet—it had a hollow echo that summer’s bustle had managed to keep at bay. Now, in the stillness of autumn, it had settled in, heavy and thick.

A small ginger cat, a stray that Elara had been feeding, wound its way around Silas’s slippers. It had shown up the week after the funeral and had claimed the porch as its own. He never named it, but he always had a saucer of milk ready. Today, the cat looked up at him with wide, trusting eyes and gave a soft purr. Silas reached down and stroked its head, the fur surprisingly warm against his cool fingers. He missed Elara’s constant, gentle rhythm. He missed the way she hummed old songs while she worked, the way her hands moved with practiced grace when she tended the garden. The flowers were all gone now, leaving only brown, brittle stalks. He hadn’t had the heart to pull them.

One afternoon, a young girl, maybe eight or nine, came shyly up the path. She was carrying a small, square basket. “Mr. Silas?” she asked, her voice as delicate as a dried leaf. “Mom said to bring this over.” She held out the basket. Inside was a single, perfect pumpkin pie, still warm.

“Your mother is very kind,” Silas said, taking the pie. “What’s your name?” “Clara,” she answered. “Mom said she’s worried about your leaves. You used to have the prettiest raked lawn.” Silas managed to smile. “I haven’t been up to it this year.”

“I could do it,” Clara offered. “I like jumping in them.”

So, it began. Every weekend, Clara would come with her small rake, her red-and-white striped wool hat a bright spot in the muted landscape. Silas would sit on the porch, watching as she methodically raked the leaves into a huge, soft-looking pile. When it was big enough, she would stop, take a running start, and leap into the middle with a joyful shout. Her laughter filled the autumn air, a sound Silas hadn’t realized he was missing.

One day, after a particularly spirited leaf-jumping session, Clara came over to the porch. “Look what I found, Mr. Silas,” she said, her small hand outstretched. Lying in her palm were two perfectly intertwined maple leaves—one crimson, one gold. “They look like they’re holding hands,” she observed. Silas looked at the leaves. “They do,” he agreed, his voice thick. “Could we keep them?” she asked. He nodded, and together, they pressed the leaves into an old book from the house. A few weeks later, with the last of the leaves on the ground, Clara came up with a new idea. “Mom says we can make a memory quilt,” she explained. “A memory of the fall leaves.”

With Clara’s mother’s help, and Silas’s shaky but willing hands, they began. They collected the last of the most beautiful leaves and, using fabric paint, pressed their outlines onto squares of cream-colored cloth. Each square held a unique leaf print, a perfect record of the season. As they worked, Clara would chatter about her day, and Silas would find himself telling her about Elara. About her green thumb, her terrible singing voice, the way she made the best apple cider. He found that speaking of her didn’t hurt as much as he thought it would. The pain was still there, a soft ache, but it was overlaid with warmth, like a worn blanket. By the time the quilt was finished, the last of the color had drained from the maple tree. The cold air hinted at the coming winter. Clara laid the quilt over Silas’s knees as he sat on the porch. The ginger cat immediately curled up on top of it. Silas ran his hand over the fabric, tracing the painted outline of a maple leaf. It was a quilt of last leaves, of fading colors, and of memories lovingly preserved. It wasn’t a replacement for what he had lost, but it was a warm, soft touch in the quiet chill. And for now, that was enough.
