Trunk or Treat in LaGrange kicks off Halloween Festivities

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 3, AT 2:00 AM BACK TO 1:00 AM A good time to remember to check your smoke alarm and change the batteries is when you change your clocks twice a year as daylight savings time begins and ends.

HALLOWEEN ACTIVITIES The Canton Kiwanis Trunk or Treat will be held Thursday in the High School parking lot from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The annual costume parade also starts at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria. Trunk setup begins at 5:30 p.m. Individuals as well as businesses are invited to decorate a trunk. Participants can pick up a Trunk or Treat flyer to hang in their door the night of Halloween at County Market and Shelter Insurance in Canton. Prizes will be awarded for the best trunk. Refreshments will be available. The LaGrange Youth Center is hosting a Family Halloween Party from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. There will be a magic show and balloon “Dude” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Refreshments will be available. The First Baptist Church in Canton is hosting a Harvest Party and Trunk or Treat in the church parking lot from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday. There will be food, hot chocolate, games and candy. A campfire service will be from 7:30-8 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) will have their annual haunted house at the Lewis County Fairgrounds, Oct. 31 from 7 to 11 p.m. and Nov. 1 and 2 from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m.

BP STATION CLOSES The BP service station at 301 N. Fourth Street in Canton apparently was closing on Oct. 29. No further information was available at press time. Check the website at lewispnj.com for further updates when available.

Casino employees, businesses and individuals decorated trunks and passed out candy to over 250 children. Proceeds from the event benefit the LaGrange Community Youth Center.

Proposed Sales Tax Increase on Ballot Rita Cox Editor rita1@lewispnj.com Lewis County residents will vote Tuesday, Nov. 5 on a proposed sales tax increase. The Lewis County Commission said the issue was put on the ballot with the intent that it would help to keep 911 services in the county. The proposition reads: Shall the county of Lewis increase the previously authorized

county sales tax of five-eighths of one percent (5/8%) to one percent (1%) for the purpose of providing central dispatching of the fire protection, emergency ambulance service including emergency telephone services, and other emergency services? Lewis County Commissioner Fid Murphy, said the commission decided to have the proposition of an increased sales tax on put on the November ballot with the intent that it might help keep 911 services in Lewis County.

Lewistown to Vote on Lewis County Collector Sewer Bond Issue Robert “Bob” Veatch Dies Rita Cox Editor rita1@lewispnj.com Lewistown residents will vote, Tuesday, Nov. 5 for a Bond Issue needed for improvements for the Lewistown sewer system. Lewistown officials are encouraging a yes vote on the issue. If the bond issue passes residents will see a minimal increase on the water and sewer rates. If it does not pass, user rates will almost double and the city would not be eligible for any USDA funding or low

interest loans. Mayor Steve McKenzie said that he encourages everyone to make the right choice and do what is best for the city and the people. The proposed is a revenue bond and will not affect property tax levies. If passed, Lewistown will be eligible for funding or loans to help cover projected improvement costs. Flyers with information have been passed out to residents and if anyone has any questions they are encouraged to call Mayor Steve McKenzie.

Robert E. Veatch, the current Lewis County Collector of Revenue died Oct. 28. 2013. The Lewis County Commissioners said, “Mr. Veatch was well-liked and respected and on behalf of all the courthouse officials and employees they extend their deepest sympathy to his family. His service to Lewis County will not be forgotten and he will be sadly missed.” The Collector’s office will continue to operate with business as usual and the process of appointing someone to the collector position will take place. Mr. Veatch’s term expires in March of 2015. He was elected in 1983 and had held the office of Collector since that time. Arnold’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service is planned for a

The Lewis County 911 Board has decided to accept a bid from Marion County 911 to take over the 911 services which will begin Jan.1, 2014. Marion County 911 will receive 90 percent of the sales tax funded for 911. Ten percent will stay in the county to maintain the current building and equipment, pay off debt and possibly build up a reserve fund. The Lewis County 911 Board has provided information about the current situation and issues, which appear on page 3A
