Miss Arkansas Visits DeWitt Elementary School

The 2015 Senior Class of DeWitt High School will hold its Commencement Exercises Friday, May 15th beginning at 7pm at DeWitt High School.

Weather permitting, activities will be held at Dragon Stadium.

ARKANSAS COUNTY RETIRED TEACHERS MEETING

Arkansas County Retired Teachers will meet Wednesday, May 20 at 11:30 at the Baptist Hospital in Stuttgart in conference room A. We will share up-dates from The ARTA district meeting in Pine Bluff.

Of course, there will be plenty of FOOD, FUN, and FELLOWSHIP. Come and join us and don`t forget to bring your volunteer hours.

As the summer travel season begins, so does a two-week long enforcement effort by Arkansas State Police and other law enforcement officers who will be on the lookout for violators of the Arkansas primary seat belt and child passenger safety laws.

Beginning May 19th and continuing through June 1st state and local law enforcement agencies in Arkansas will participate in a nationwide Click It or Ticket mobilization.

As people take to the roads to celebrate the long Memorial Day weekend, law enforcement officials across the nation will be working to ensure that everyone buckles up.

Let’s have a safe Memorial Day weekend and a safe summer.

The 3rd through 5th grade students at DeWitt Elementary were treated to a special appearance by Miss Arkansas, Ashton Campbell, Tuesday May 5th before beginning the Park testing. Campbell travels to schools across the state and has spoken to over 60,000 students to promote her platform, “Aim Higher: Setting our sights on higher education.”

Campbell told the students that her parents were the first in their families to ever attend college and that at an early age

her dad told her the importance of setting goals and making them happen. Campbell at the age of 14, decided her goal in life was to attend the University of Arkansas. She then began her journey of entering pageants to help offset the cost of college. Because of her hard work, her dream of attending college became a reality. Campbell will crown the new Miss Arkansas this summer.

LOCAL NEWS EWITT POLICE REPORT

May 2, 2015: At approximately 6:00 PM officer Jody Chapman was dispatched to the area of South Harrison Street and West 11th Street for a woman who appeared to be intoxicated, yelling and chasing cars.

Dispatched advised they received more than one call on the incident.

Upon arrival, Chapman observed a female laying on the edge of the street. When Chapman pulled up, the female sat up. Upon speaking with the suspect, later identified as Samantha Taylor, it appeared that she was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Her clothes were covered with leaves and dirt from being on the ground, she had leaves and sticks in her hair and was not wearing any shoes and was slurring her speech. When helped to her feet to retrieve her identification, Taylor was unsteady and needed assistance to walk and stand. It took Taylor several attempts after several requests to retrieve her driver’s license.

Once Taylor’s identification was confirmed, she was placed under arrest for public intoxication and transported to Arkansas County Detention Center. During initial contact, Taylor was polite and respectful, but en route to the detention center she began yelling and cursing. Interaction with Taylor was recorded by body-cam and transport to the detention center was recorded by in car video.

May 10, 2015: Officer Jennifer Crossett was dispatched to the Hopewood Apartments for a fight in the parking lot. Upon her arrival she was redirected to 112 East 5th. After arriving at 112 East 5th, she spoke with Carter Rains and James Julian.

Rains stated that Julian accused him of stealing his guns and then came at him. Julian stated that they got into a fight over nothing. Both males had cuts and scrapes from fighting.

Both were placed under arrest and taken to Arkansas County Detention Center.

May 10, 2015: Officer Clayton Dillion was dispatched on a 911 call to 305 south Madison St. The caller stated that there was a fight going on.

Upon arrival outside of the house, Dillion was approached by Rodney Brewer. Brewer said that the fight was inside between Rebecca Layman and Josh Midkiff. Brewer led Dillion into the house where he found Midkiff and Layman sitting on a bed in the bedroom.

Layman was crying and had several very visible marks on her face, so he asked her to step out of the room while he spoke to Midkiff. At this time Deputy Randy Bateman showed up to assist and he went

Dillion then stepped into the other room with Layman and saw that she had a swollen nose with blood and a swollen knot on her forehead. She had blood in her hair from wiping her nose. Layman told Dillion and Bateman that Midkiff had hit her several times

In celebration of National Boating and Fishing Week, Dale Bumpers White River National Wildlife Refuge will host a youth fishing derby at the Farm Unit, near Ethel. This family friendly event will provide young people a great opportunity to fish a stocked catfish pond on Saturday, June 13th, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Registration for the derby will begin at 7:30 a.m. the morning of the event. Any youth 12 years of age and under will have an opportunity to catch catfish that were stocked by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, so be sure to bring your fishing pole.

Daily fish limits will apply. At the conclusion of the youth fishing derby, youngsters who registered will gather under the tent for a random drawing to win educational outreach materials/prizes. Hotdogs and chips will be provided by the Friends of White River NWR. National Boating and Fishing Week was established to help promote the sport of fishing among younger generations, as well as to provide family friendly outdoor recreation and education opportunities. In the true spirit of this special week, after the conclusion of the youth fishing derby, the stocked pond will be open to fishers of all ages through Sunday June 14th.

(Fishing will be allowed until sunset on Saturday and

on Sunday from sunrise to sunset).

Signs for the event will be posted on Hwy 1 directing traffic to the site Saturday morning.

Officer Dillion then arrested Midkiff for Domestic Battery, 3rd based on the marks on Layman’s face and the testimonies of Layman and Brewer.

Preston Luke (squirrel) Poston, 3 Month old of DeWitt, received his angel wings on Tuesday May 5, 2015 at the DeWitt City Hospital in DeWitt, Arkansas.

Preston was born January 22, 2015 at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

Preston was the son of David Poston and Kristina Whiting.

Preston loved playing with silky and sock monkeys, watching Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh, and he enjoyed having fun.

Preston leaves to cherish his memories, parents; David Poston and Kristina Whiting both of DeWitt, Arkansas, his grandparents; Lisa and Michael Dumond and Mike Whiting all of DeWitt, Arkansas and Jennifer and Kevin Poston, aunt; Whitney (Justin) Owens, uncles; Preston Whiting of DeWitt, Arkansas and Jax Poston of St. Charles, Arkansas.

Memorial Service was held Thursday, May 7, 2015 at New Life Fellowship in DeWitt, Arkansas at 2 p.m. with Bro. Michael Dumond and Bro. Billy Ulrich officiating. Service by McKinzie Funeral Home of DeWitt, Arkansas.

Bobby Ray Childers, 65 of DeWitt, died May 7, 2015 at his home in DeWitt, Arkansas. Born June 11, 1949 in DeWitt, Arkansas he was the son of the late George Childers and Jurrie Henderson.

Bobby was educated in the DeWitt School District and also worked in farming.

Bobby loved gardening and deer hunting.

Bobby was preceded in death by (3) Brothers; Lonnie Childers, Ed Childers, Jack Childers and (1) Sister; Ruby Isom.

Bobby is survived by his children; (3) Sons; Bobby Wayne (Jennifer) Childers, Calvin (Melanie) Childers both of DeWitt, Arkansas and Jonathon Childers of San Francisco, California, (3) Brothers; Melvin Childers of Gillett, Arkansas, Donny Childers of DeWitt, Arkansas, and Danny Childers of St. Charles, Arkansas, (1) Sister; Yvonne Faisst known as “Sis” of Conway, Arkansas, (4) Grandchildren; Caitlyn Childers, Christian Childers, Tyler Childers, and Myles Childers.

Graveside service was held Saturday May 9, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. at the Cedarcrest Cemetery in DeWitt, Arkansas with Michael Waldroup officiating, service by McKinzie Funeral Home of DeWitt, Arkansas

Viola Baxter Cummings, 91, died May 8, 2015.

She was born December 20, 1923, in Arkansas County near Hagler. She was the youngest daughter of James Franklin “Jim” Baxter and Polly Anna Watkins Baxter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dennis I. Cummings; two sons, Dennis Ray Cummings and Rodney I. Cummings; two sisters, Mary Moser and Marie Baxter, who died at age 10; one brother, Lyn B. Baxter; 10 nephews and one very special niece, a much loved and devoted care giver, Betty Ann Jones.

She is survived by one grandson, Dennis Porter Cummings of Stuttgart, and also many nieces and nephews she though of as her very own. Although her immediate family was very small the Mary Moser family, Lyn Baxter family, Harley Cummings family, Dub Cummings family, and Flora Davis family were her family and she loved every one of them very much. Having worked in her church and in the public about all of her adult life, she had many co-workers and close friends who will remember her as “Ms. Viola, Aunt Vidie, or Grandma.”

Aunt Vidie was a little woman with a big heart full of love. She felt like there was something good in everyone, from neighbors sown the road who shared their garden vegetables to the banker up town who helped her when she needed it.

She lived her entire life in and around DeWitt, except for two years she worked in Pine Bluff.

She graduated from DeWitt High School during World War II and went to work at the Pine Bluff Arsenal. She came home when her shift changed and she had an extra day on the weekend. She was proud of the fact that she worked there two years and only missed 2 days of work. She retired from the Arkansas County Collectors office in 1987 after working there 19 years.

Opal Johnson Opal Louise West Johnson, 82, of DeWitt died May 9, 2015. She was born October 25, 1932, in England, AR, to William Henry and Mattie Beatrice Stogner West.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband William Edward Johnson; two sons Anthony and Steven Johnson; daughter-in-law Diane Johnson; and two son-in-laws C.J. Jackson and Bud Cummings.

Opal is survived by her children Lana Martin (Steve) of DeWitt, Brenda Sullinger (Tom) of McKinney, TX, Kathy Jackson of Gillett, Vickey Harper (Gary) of Sheridan, Brenda Hawkins (Don) of Sheridan, Larry Johnson of Pine Bluff, and Sherry Cummings of Rison; two brothers Buddy and Ray West; eight sisters Hattie Reed, Betty Elam, Joyce East, Erma Holloway, Carol Parenteau, Doris Bullock, Nancy Selman, and Billie Faye Gibson; fifteen grandchildren; twentythree great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.

Obituary Rose Hamner Rose Mary Hamner, 73, of DeWitt, Arkansas passed away May 7, 2015 at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. She is survived by her son; Jeff Hamner of Sherwood, Arkansas, sister-in-law; Barbara Hamner and numerious nieces and nephews. She is preceeded in death by her brothers JT Hamner, Charles Hamner, sister Helen Jones and a niece Audrey Faye and son Scotty. Memorial Services will be held May 16, 2015 at 2:00 pm at First Christian Church in DeWitt, Arkansas. The family request that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Arkansas Enterprises for the Developmentally Disabled.

Essie Lee Freeman James known as “Sister” of Pine Bluff, Arkansas entered into eternal rest Thursday, May 7, 2015 at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff. Essie Lee James was born December 11, 1926 in (Packing Town) Pine Bluff, Arkansas. She was the daughter of the late Brooks Freeman and Clara Spade Freeman.

She accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Derrick Chapel A.M.E. Church in Wabbaseka, Arkansas . She joined church under the leadership of Pastor N. Whitehead.

She was educated in Pleasant View, Barnett Chapel and Wabbaseka School District.

She married Frank James on December 20, 1956 and was a homemaker to her husband and children.

She loved talking, fishing, gardening, her family, and most of all kissing and playing with her grandchildren.

Essie Lee James was preceded in death by her husband Frank James Sr., (6) brothers and (4) sisters.

She is survived by her children; (1) Son; Frank (Della) James Jr. of Grady, Arkansas, (9) daughters; Andrew Lee Maxwell of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Elma Halton of Fredericksburg Virginia, Norolyn (Andrew) Riggins of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Geneva James of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Glory James of Gainesville, Florida, Amelia (Henry) Farver of Gautier, Mississippi, Alma (Anthony) Topp of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Iona Bowden of Harvey, Illinois and Berniece Reed of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, (1) Daughter in Law, Betty James of Chicago, Illinois, and (1) Sister in Law; Earnestine Freeman of Memphis, Tennessee, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends, (2) Caregivers; Angela Wright and Mary White.

Obituary Nancy Fraize Nancy Louise Fraize, age 77, of St. Charles died May 6th. She was a dedicated homemaker and housewife. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the National Wildlife Foundation.

She is survived by two sons; James Andrew Fraize of St. Charles and Adam David Fraize of Jonesboro, one brother; Donald U. Peet of Sidney, ME. She was proceeded in death by her husband; James Elmer Fraize, by parents; Wendell and Juanita Peet and siblings; Richard W. Peet and Carolyn J. Mclaud.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, May 16th at 3:00 p.m. at the St. Charles Cemetery, with internment by McKenzie Funeral Home of DeWitt.

A Thought

By Michael P. Daniel “Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven. For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.” Matthew 18:10-11 NKJV The “little ones” could be referring to new believers as easily as literal children, though child seems more likely given the overall context of chapter 18 (vs 2, vs 4, vs 5). Yet we should also understand that a new believer, regardless of age, must be considered somewhat vulnerable, even gullible, depending on what they think they are looking for or have found. If new believers in their prayers and confession have truly submitted themselves to The Lord, this makes them as vulnerable as a little child in that they are willing to trust and follow and learn. And this defines our capacity to love: our willingness to trust, our willingness to be vulnerable to someone else.

This is the reason Jesus is adamant about their need for protection. Maybe this passage, coupled with Psalm 91:11-12, gave rise to the idea of “guardian angels”

charged with protecting us; celestial beings who “see the face of My Father” and report directly to the Throne of Mercy those who are being mistreated in any way.

It’s a nice idea and may well be true, but I think it misses Jesus’ greater point in what He is trying to teach His disciples. How easy it would be to simply turn over our responsibility and care for these “little ones” to angels so we can go on about our own business! Yet we see through the overall context that Jesus is not calling out individuals to warn them they are on their own and strictly at the mercy of these angels. Remember Jesus is actually building an “ekklesia”, a congregation, a community – what we now call the Church; the Body of Christ that should be always at its best in receiving “little ones” on a regular, ongoing basis. The Church should be a “revolving door” of new believers coming in and disciples going out into the world to “make disciples”.

Like our own children, however, there is no magic moment that will suddenly make them ready for the harsh world they will face. They must be taught. They must

God’s View of Mothers

By Pastor Steve Ellison As I write this on the eve of Mother’s Day, I am praying that you are making plans to attend church with your mother. I also hope you are spending some time thinking about mothers in general and specifically about your mother. Isaiah 66:13 says, “As one whom his mother comforts, So I will comfort you; And you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.” (NASU) If God Himself uses the idea of motherhood to illustrate His perfect, unfailing love for us, we can safely assume that there is no better picture of love in all the world. No one comforts like Mom comforts. When a little one has a skinned knee or hurt feelings, who do they run to? They run to Mom. Society may tell us differently, but children need both a Mom and a Dad. Children need a Dad who will tell them to toughen up, but they also need a Mom who will be soft, gentle, and tender. Dad may help them to prepare for the next hurt coming their way, but Mom will dry the tears and soothe the present hurt. A wise second grader once said, “Moms make you feel better without medicine”. True.

Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 2:7, But we proved to be gentle among you, as a nursing mother tenderly cares for her own children. (NASU) A nursing mother provides for her children. She nurtures her children, not just with milk, but also with intellectual and spiritual food. A mother is naturally protective over her children. A mother is gentle and tender, loving with a deep affection that is easily recognized by all. Another wise second grader said, “God gave me to my Mom because she loves me a lot more than other people’s mothers love me”. How true! Mothers love their children like no one else. God’s view of motherhood is exalted indeed. He places a great

importance on motherhood. The Bible is full of stories about mothers, their trials, tribulations, and triumphs. God uses mothers to teach us much about His love.

My favorite reference to motherhood in the Bible is the picture of motherhood imbedded in the Passover. In Exodus 12, many see the death angel “passing over” the houses of the Hebrew slaves living in Egypt. In a sense, that is certainly true. The death angel did not touch those inside the Hebrew houses of which the owners had obediently placed the blood of the sacrificial lamb on the doorframes. However, the context and grammar of Exodus 12 really picture God Himself covering those homes by “passing over” them as a protection against the enemy of death. The death angel “passed over” those homes because God first “passed over” in protection of those homes. The original language suggests a mother hen passing her wings over her helpless chicks in gathering them to herself to protect them from danger.

You and I are certainly helpless in every regard, but especially and certainly helpless against the enemy of death. Death is no respecter of persons. Death comes for every person. Aren’t you glad that because of your faith in Him, God passes His wings over you to protect you from the certain, everlasting death that awaits you? In Luke 13:34 Jesus said, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it!” (NASU) A baby chick can run out from under the hen’s wings and you can run out from under God’s wings, but please do not. pastorsteve8800@gmail.com

be built up in responsible doctrine and encouraged in their newfound faith to understand and deal with what they are about to face. Yet they should never be made so comfortable that they never want to leave!

So the “angels” Jesus refers to could very well be the celestial beings who do have direct audience with The Lord, but our Lord could also be referring to the more mature disciples of The Church who take their responsibility, their privilege to make disciples very seriously. Perhaps these, too, have such direct access to The Throne in their prayers – especially when seeking guidance to teach and to train AND to report to The Lord those who abuse His beloved, the “lost” whom the Son of Man came to save.

Mature believers may not be celestial beings with supernatural power, but you and I are no less responsible for the care, the education, and the well-being of the “little ones”. This is what we sign up for when we take our vows at baptism, at confirmation, at bar or bat mitzvah, and when we freely choose to call ourselves “members” of any “ekklesia”. We get direct access to Glory, and we get to raise up new disciples. I think we will never find the real meaning of life until we find ourselves involved in Real Life in Christ, in the Covenant, and in the community of faith.

Sirs, is This the Time? No. 2

Some time ago I was visiting a friend of mine in a hospital; he was very sick and was 92 years old. I knew him to be the member of a certain church, but I was concerned about him being ready to face the Lord, if he should die!

I was speaking to him about the end of time as we have known it here on earth. He replied, “My daddy told me that many years ago, and his daddy told him that, and they have both been gone many years, and we are still here.” The he said, “We probably have another thousand years before this world ends.”

Not know exactly what to say in answer to his remarks, I just stood there a few seconds, then an answer formed in my mind, and I said, “Dear friend, you don’t have another thousand years, and neither do I. We may not be here at the end of this year.”

Needless to say, I won that argument hands down, and in just a few more weeks my friend had departed this life.

I will share his theology with you, because there are far too many people who are of the same mindset.

He said, here is how I see it! It’s like playing a ballgame; you have to wait until the game is over before you know for sure who won.

I replied, No dear man, we have to know where we are going before we leave, because salvation is by faith in a plan God made! And as we believe His Plan, in that He came down and died to pay for our sins we know for sure that we are forgiven. Therefore we know we are going to Heaven before we ever cross that Jordan River!

I was born into the Wood Family 90 years ago in July, and never one time have I ever been asked to join the Wood Family. I was born into it, and so is it with the Family of God. You don’t get into it by joining a church; you must be born into it by a Supernatural take part in them with no Godly remorse? Answer this question honestly and you will know where you stand with the Lord!

Sirs, is this the time. Should I repent now and turn to the Lord, or should I wait for a more convenient time?

How much time do you personally have left? You don’t know, and I don’t know for myself either! But God’s advice to us is this; don’t wait until your game of life is over before you find out where you are going when you leave.

2nd Corinthians 6:2” - - - - - - - Behold, now is the accepted time, behold, now is the day of salvation.”

We were put here to find out where we are going when we leave! Do you know where you are going, or are you just hoping for the best?

Chase Akeem Jenkins of DeWitt graduated from Arkansas Tech University with his Masters of Science in Health Informatics degree on May 8, 2015. Jenkins is the son of Brooke and Aubrey Johnson.

The 4-H/TSC Paper Clover Campaign is a nationwide, in-store fundraiser that benefits 4-H programming in the communities where a TSC store is located. The effort has provided direct support for local camps, after-school programs and other activities, and has granted scholarships to these events that youth can explore their interests in everything from animal science to robotics. In Arkansas County, the Paper Clover funds have gone to support camps and educational activities for the youth. The 2015 Spring Paper Clover fundraiser event was held April 22 – May 2. Arkansas County 4-H Paper Clover Day was Thursday, April 30 at the Stuttgart TSC store.

English Couple Visit DeWitt

Patrick Richard and his wife, Claire, from Sussex, England, recently visited Jay and Dena Bly in DeWitt.

Jay Bly, a former teacher in Stuttgart, met the Richards two years ago on a school trip to Space Camp at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL. “They put our groups [of students] together, and here

we are,” Jay Bly said.

Since then everyone, including their former students, have kept in touch.

“Our kids in the UK are still communicating with the kids in Stuttgart,” Patrick Richard said.

Patrick, who is from France, and Claire, who is British, taught physics and French, respectively, at an all-girls school in England. The couple incorporated several voyages to the United States into their curriculum over the years. Although this particular trip was not their first visit to the United States, it was their first trip to Arkansas.

“Over eight years, we took 160 girls to the U.S.,” Patrick Richard said in reference to the various field trips he and Claire have organized for their students.

The Richards’ first trip to Arkansas definitely proved to be a learning experience. The couple was surprised by the flat terrain and fascinated by the area’s rice industry. Riding in a pickup truck, which is rare in their part of the world, was also a first for them.

“It’s not common, so the idea to [ride in a] pickup never crossed our minds,” Patrick Richard said.

Upon returning to the UK, the Richards have plans to visit family in Patrick’s native France.

“We are delighted to be here,” Patrick Richard said.

“It’s been extraordinary.”

Arkansas County Extension Homemakers Celebrate Membership

The family of Nicky Hargrove established the scholarship fund to honor Hargrove’s years of service to Arkansas Farm Bureau and all of Arkansas agriculture. Hargrove was a rice, soybean and wheat farmer from Stuttgart (Arkansas County). He served as president of Arkansas Farm Bureau from 19761986 and was inducted into the Arkansas Agriculture Hall of Fame in 1999.

Hargrove passed away in 2011 at the age of 79, and his family wanted to find a way to honor the people who cared for him throughout his years of illness while also ensuring his name is never forgotten.

“Over the years of fighting lung cancer, heart problems, diabetes and lymphoma, some of the most important people to Nicky and his family were the registered nurses and pharmacists who participated in his care,” said Lori Dabbs,

Arkansas County Extension Homemakers celebrated years of membership at the Spring EH Council Meeting held on April 22 at Phillips Community College in DeWitt. Members recognized were: 50 Years: Mary Ruth Dupslaff, Patsy Coose, Lorene Harris, Gladys Hearn, Bettye Knoll and Joan McFerrin; 60 Years: Katie Young, Ruth Snoztmeier; and 70 Years: Eleanor Bullock. Each was presented a certificate and pin by LaTaaka Harvey, County Extension Agent – Family & Consumer Sciences. Bullock was also presented a flag that had previously flown over the U.S. Captiol.

The meeting opened with a welcome by President Shirley Fread followed by the Thought for the Day “The Garden of Your Daily Living” by LaTaaka Harvey.

A Spring Scarf Parade was enjoyed by all. Participants modeled their scarfs and told something about them.

Shirley Jackson introduced Dr. LaVona Traywick, University of Arkansas, Extension Associate Professor – Gerentology. Dr. Traywick presented the program “Endless Gardening” sharing that the benefits of gardening are endless. A toolkit designed as a guide and resource for those who want to create a universally designed personal garden was shown. Gardening can help us connect with nature, reduce stress, and offer a form of physical activity.

2015 Miss Arkansas County Rice, Delia Barrett was introduced. Delia talked about the benefits of rice, shared her recipe and samples of her rice dish “Rice from this Side of the Border.”

Following a delicious potluck lunch, members enjoyed a silent auction as a fundraiser for EHC. Members enjoyed a skit “Teamwork by the Tater Sisters” presented by Key EH Club members.

LaTaaka Harvey, assisted by Alta Lockley, 4-H Program Assistant presented special recognition awards. All EH clubs were presented a certification of appreciation for assisting with the 4-H Banquet on March 9. Annie Peters and Barbara Jones were recognized for volunteering to judge the 4-H Share The Fun/Fashion Revue activity.

Officer nomination committee report was given by Barbara Jones and approved. Harvey installed officers using the representation of garden tools for each office. 2015-2016 officers are as follows: President - Barbara Jones; President Elect - Shirley Fread; Vice President - Annie Peters; Secretary Rose Ella Smith; Treasurer - Gladys Hearn; and Reporter - Joan McFerrin.

The meeting adjourned with “The Homemaker’s Prayer”, followed by a Spring Indoor Gardening activity shared by LaTaaka Harvey.

By Margaret Aycock GREETINGS: I hope that every Mother in the good old USA had a wonderful and blessed Mother’s Day this past Sunday, May 10th. I really enjoyed my day, my husband and son, Rick, took me to Mary J. Country Store at Ethel for lunch.

Although I go to eat there quite often, I always enjoy going there to see people that I don’t get to see every day. (Know what I mean, Verne?) I just don’t get out to go places anymore like I use to before I got old. Ha!!! Actually, I don’t miss going out unless I really want to.

So now, everybody knows that I’m old, disabled, tired, sick, and just downright lazy, I’ll quit talking about myself, and try to find some good gossip. Ha! Ha! JOHNSON SERVICES: Our condolences and our prayers go out to the family of Opal Louise West Johnson (82), of DeWitt, who went to be with her Heaven Father, Saturday, May 9th. Opal was a sweet lady and friend. I did not get to see or to visit with her as l would have like to, but it pleases me to know that Opal is no longer in pain and she is waiting for all of us. I ask that all will pray for me and pray with me. I pray for my healing and so many others for a heal to their mind, soul and body. Only you Lord know each and everyone not called by name. You know them because we all belong to you Lord. I pray in your name and only your name that you will keep your arms of protection around your people, as well as what’s happening in the world today that is not of you. I pray peace to the weary minds so that they may have peace filled and rest filled nights. I Lord pray that their will be more understanding to your people on how we must put matters in your hands, not their hands, for I know you can and I know you will fix it Solar system Solar system on display for all. Lord again and again I ask a blessing upon all that reside in the hospitals and nursing homes, that they will be comforted and rest in peace in Jesus name is my prayer Amen.

Saturday, April 25, DeWitt Middle School’s eighth-grade Pre-AP History class went to Petit Jean State Park located in Morrilton, AR. According to the Petit Jean State Park website, Petit Jean is known for its historical landmarks and ancient drawings. It is a 300-year-old legend with waterfalls, bridges, caves, canyons, and turtle and carpet rocks. Over 500,000 people visit the beautiful scenery every year.

Students had the privilege of visiting Rock House Cave, Cedar Falls Overlook, Bear Cave, Cedar Falls Trail, Mather Lodge and the gravesite of Adrienne Dumont, also known as “Jean” or “Little John.” “Jean” was engaged to a French nobleman who refused to

marry her until his return from a voyage to explore a new land. She then disguised herself as a cabin boy and secretly stowed away on his ship. According to the website, when she was recognized as a girl, she was sick and requested that she be buried overlooking the Arkansas River.

The class also visited the Rock House Cave, which houses prehistoric cave paintings drawn by Indians more than 1,000 years ago.

Not far from Rock House Cave is the Cedar Falls Overlook, which overlooks the 95-foot-tall Cedar Falls waterfall. To reach the waterfall, students had to hike two miles down Petit Jean Mountain. Upon reaching it, they sat on the rocks

and took in the relaxing sounds and scenery. After climbing back up the mountain, tired and hungry, students ate at the Mather Lodge restaurant before returning home. “I think it was a great opportunity to be able to see a lot of the things we studied about,” PreAP History student Rachel Daniels said. “My favorite part was the Cedar Falls Overlook.”

Pre-Ap History teacher Clay Dollar said, “I was thrilled to be able to provide an opportunity for students to see and enjoy some of the things we studied. Getting to see it first-hand makes the learning valuable and not just something to know for a test.”

COMMUNITY NEWS Storms, Heavy Rains and Flooding Leave at Least Two Dead, Many Pastures Under Water LITTLE ROCK â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Heavy rains throughout the state caused rivers to rise and creeks to overrun their banks, leaving pasturelands under inches â&#x20AC;&#x201D; or feet â&#x20AC;&#x201D; of water across much of western Arkansas.

The Howard County Sheriff â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Office also reported at least two people had died in Howard County after heavy storms, possibly including tornadoes, swept through Nashville.

Sherry Beaty-Sullivan, Howard County Agricultural Extension Agent, said many buildings on the west side of Nashville appeared damaged Monday morning, including one church that appeared to have suffered a buckled roof.

Beaty-Sullivan said that electricity was also out for much of the west side of Nashville.

The storm band, which stretched hundreds of miles from the TexasMexico border to the WisconsinCanada border, swept eastward across western Arkansas overnight.

U.S. Geological Survey river gauges showed rivers at levels well above flood stage Monday morning, including Crooked Creek in Yellville at above 17.6 feet, the Buffalo National River near Hasty above 28.4 feet, and the Mulberry River near Mulberry at above 15.3 feet. The bridge that carries Arkansas Highway 23 over the Mulberry River about 30 miles north over Ozark was reported as under water late Sunday afternoon.

Jack Clark, Yell County Agricultural Extension Agent, said flooding from the Petit Jean River near Dardanelle had left surrounding pastures under several feet of water. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m seeing water in places Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never seen it go in my three years in this position,â&#x20AC;? Clark said.

Jerri Lephiew, Columbia County staff chair said nearly every creek in her county seemed to be flooded, with erosion rapidly occurring in multiple pastures and roads. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re just sopping wet,â&#x20AC;? Lephiew said. She said much of the floodwater would likely prove more of a problem for the counties on northwestern Louisiana, as it flows south toward the Gulf of Mexico.

Joe Paul Stuart, Stuart County staff chair, said high winds had damaged several acres of corn, and that water was covering many acres of wheat that would not be replanted, being too late in the season. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had a lot of high winds, but got pretty lucky â&#x20AC;&#x201D; I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think any tornados touched down here,â&#x20AC;? Stuart said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re expecting the Red River to flood, and cattle farmers are moving their herds to higher ground.â&#x20AC;?

Prior to the weekendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s storms, Arkansas crop growers were enjoying a brief respite from an already-wet spring, during which farmers completed enough planting to catch up with the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s five-year average for planting progress. Jason Kelley, wheat and feed grains agronomist

for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, said most producers were â&#x20AC;&#x153;at a point where they needed a rain, but not a flood.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;It appears the heaviest of rains were mainly in western Arkansas, but the delta region did have some high rainfall totals,â&#x20AC;? Kelley said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Any time we get large rains, we can have issues with flooding and stand establishment. There were a lot of crops planted last week, right ahead of these rains, so even fields that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t flood may still have trouble getting a stand after these rains.â&#x20AC;?

The National Weather Service is predicting additional rains throughout the state later this week.

Energy Efficiency Makeover Contest to Benefit 17 Electric Cooperative Members Little Rock, Ark. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; May 1, 2015 â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Seventeen electric cooperative members will be selected as grandprize winners in the Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas Eighth Annual Energy Efficiency Makeover Contest. The winning members, one from each of Arkansasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; 17 electric distribution cooperatives, will each receive up to $3,000 in energy efficiency improvements to their homes. The application deadline is July 15.

According to Bret Curry, manager of residential energy marketing for the Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas, seven previous winners are enjoying comfortable homes with lower utility bills. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Energy Efficiency Makeover Contest has been a great way to showcase proven energy efficiency components and measures while teaching fellow Ar-

kansans how they can make their homes more efficient one step at a time.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Once the winners are selected, our trained contractors will visit each home and complete a comprehensive energy audit to pinpoint problem areas,â&#x20AC;? Boozman Statement on Senate Passage of Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act WASHINGTON â&#x20AC;&#x201C;U.S. Senator John Boozman (R-AR) released the following statement after Senate passage of the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A nuclear armed Iran would be a threat to the United States, our allies and the world as a whole. While I do believe that resolving this crisis diplomatically is in everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best interest, the framework the administration has presented gives little confidence that this resolution is the right one. It appears that the Obama Administration and the regime in Tehran canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even agree on what the framework says.

While I understand my colleagues desire to strengthen the bill, and was supportive of some of their efforts, Congress cannot simply walk

away without having a say in this vital national security matter that has been negotiated behind closed doors. Without this bill, there will be no review of the Iran deal. There would be nothing stopping President Obama from signing a bad agreement with Iran. There would be no limitation on the Presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to waive sanctions and it would be much more difficult for Congress to reinstate sanctions should Iran fail to live up to its end of the bargain. It was sanctions that brought the Iranians to the table in the first place. If they are unilaterally removed, the Iranians will have no reason to carry out their commitments.

We have a responsibility to ensure

that Iran never achieves its goal of becoming a nuclear power. Passage of this bill restores Congressâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to ensure any deal with Iran is verifiable, enforceable and accountable. Without it, the ability for the U.S. and our allies to hold Iran accountable to its promises is virtually non-existent.â&#x20AC;?

Background: The Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015 would require the president to submit any final nuclear deal with Iran to Congress before being able to waive or suspend congressional sanctions. Senator Boozman is one of 66 cosponsors of the bill. The strong bipartisan support for the bill forced President Obama to lift his veto threat.

LITTLE ROCK â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The state has approved funding of $128.7 million for 67 projects to renovate and make repairs at public schools.

Upgrades include new heating, air conditioning, roofing and fire alarms. Some schools will use the money for expansions of classrooms, gyms and auditoriums.

School districts must match the

state grants, but not all of them must match at the same rate.

Schools with relatively low property assessments match at a lower percentage than schools with higher property values, in which a mill generates greater revenue.

The state awards grants for school facilities improvements as a consequence of the Lake View lawsuit,

which challenged the adequacy and equity of school funding. The state Supreme Court sided with the plaintiffs and ruled that the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s school funding formula was in violation of constitutional mandates to provide equal educational opportunities to all children, no matter where they live.

The case was concluded in 2007, af-

ter the legislature had greatly increased school funding and guaranteed that it would determine and provide adequate funding every year. One of the final steps toward state compliance with constitutional mandates occurred when the legislature allocated more than $450 million in facilities funding during the 2007 regular session.

The monetary awards were approved by the Public School Academic Facilities and Transportation Commission, which is composed of the state Education Commissioner, the director of the Department of Finance and Administration and the President of the Arkansas Development Finance Authority.

The Commission approved funds for projects that will begin during the 2015-2016 school year, and also approved 53 additional projects that will be funded in 2016-2017.

Priority projects are those that ensure students stay safe, warm and dry during the school day. The quality of facilities can affect the performance of students and teachers, for example, heat and humidity may cause distraction and fatigue. Schools are regularly inspected to make sure that plumbing and electrical systems are up to code, and that fire alarms and kitchen equipment are properly maintained.

The â&#x20AC;&#x153;wealth indexâ&#x20AC;? is a formula to calculate how much a local district must contribute to match state funding.

When property assessments go up inside school district boundaries, the school is considered â&#x20AC;&#x153;wealthierâ&#x20AC;? and its portion of the costs of a facilities project also goes up.

Losing students also causes the district to become â&#x20AC;&#x153;wealthierâ&#x20AC;? under the facilities wealth index. Therefore, loss of enrollment not only decreases state aid in the amount of per pupil funding the district receives, it also makes the districtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s facilities costs go up. Gaining students or losing assessed value of property makes a district â&#x20AC;&#x153;poorer,â&#x20AC;? according to the wealth index. That means the state contributes a greater proportion of the costs of facilities projects.

Skin Cancer Common But Preventable May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

(Little Rock, Ark.) – Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. It is estimated that more than 2 million people will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer, and more than 10,000 will die due to skin cancer in the United States in 2015.

Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer. In Arkansas, it is estimated that nearly 500 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in 2015. This May, the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) in partnership with the Arkansas Cancer Coalition (ACC), wants to raise awareness about the danger of skin cancers and remind Arkansans about the steps to prevent it.

“Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults between 25 and 29 years- old, and the second most common form of cancer for young people between 15 and 29 years-old,” Dr. Appathurai Balamurugan, Medical Director for the Chronic Disease Prevention and Control Branch at “This year, at our 25th annual skin cancer screening, our local dermatologist identified seven possible melanomas, nine basal cell and six squamous cell carcinomas in 132 people,” Sandy Prince, Vice President of Cancer Prevention and Education at Hope Cancer Resources in Springdale, and member of the Skin Cancer Workgroup at the ACC, said.

“Your skin is your largest organ. Protect it so it can protect you,” Prince added.

Some of the risk factors for melanoma and other forms of skin cancer include: having fair skin that burns easily, unprotected or excessive exposure to UV radiation through sunlight or tanning booths, history of sunburns, having many moles, or having a family history of melanoma or other skin cancers.

OCCUPATIONAL INJURY LEAVE - Arkansas County provides worker’s compensation coverage for its employees as required by the Constitution and by law. (ACA 11-9-101 et seq.). In the event an employee sustains a compensable occupational injury which results in loss of work time, the county will pay the injured employee full salary the first seven (7) days of lost time when the employee chooses to use vacation or accrued sick leave during said days.

Should said employee not have vacation or sick leave then the County will pay nothing for the first seven (7) days of lost time.

Thereafter, the County will pay the difference between the employee’s regular salary and the amount paid by the worker’s compensation coverage. Small Businesses Looking for Health Insurance Can SHOP Around

By Janet Trautwein Health benefits are tough to come by at small businesses, according to a new report from the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Less than half of employers with three to nine workers offer health insurance.

Conversely, nearly all firms with 1,000 or more employees offer some type of coverage to at least a portion of their workers.

Small firms that don’t offer health benefits could be making a strategic mistake. Providing insurance is one of the most effective, economical ways for employers to support the health of their workers -- and to retain them, too. Even better, small businesses have more coverage options available to them than ever before -- including some new ones created by the Affordable Care Act. Employer-based coverage offers several key advantages to both firms and workers.

For starters, premiums covered by employers are tax-deductible, and employer payments towards coverage are not considered taxable income to employees. Individuals don’t get the same tax benefits paying for insurance themselves.

That tax exemption cuts the price of insurance for employers by up to

40 percent. That allows businesses to provide more generous coverage than individual workers might be able to secure on their own.

Employer-sponsored coverage is also less expensive to administer. According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, the administrative load for employer-sponsored insurance is half that for individually purchased policies.

That shouldn’t be surprising. After all, it’s easier for insurers -- as well as agents and brokers -- to work with one business-owner representing eight staffers than to service eight people individually.

Most importantly, for many Americans, the mere act of choosing an insurance plan is challenging. Indeed, a recent study published in the journal Health Affairs reported that “more than 60 percent of those targeted by the health insurance exchanges struggle with understanding key health insurance concepts.”

Employers usually work with agents and brokers to find coverage for their employees. In most states, a broad range of coverage is available to employers of all sizes.

cure health coverage for their workers -- the Small Business Health Options Program. Firms with 50 or fewer employees can select from among several health plan options. They can sign up at any time during the year. Businesses with 25 or fewer employees can qualify for tax credits that cover as much as half of their insurance tab if they purchase coverage through the SHOP program.

SHOP’s online system allows employers to choose how much to contribute to worker premiums and what level of coverage to offer. Features like dental insurance and dependent coverage are optional.

In some states, employers will have the option to offer coverage that will allow employees to select from several different insurance plans. Starting this year, workers in 14 states will be able to

choose their insurance provider.

Fortunately, whether employers want to explore their options through SHOP or other options for coverage, they can turn to licensed agents and brokers to help them with coverage options, manage the enrollment process for them, and serve as their expert benefits counsel throughout the life of the insurance policy.

In fact, HealthCare.gov’s SHOP exchange allows small businesses to search for agents directly on the website, or they can find someone in their area on the NAHU website at www. nahu.org.

There’s no better time for employers to explore the options available to them for offering coverage than now.

Weekly Column from the Arkansas House of Representatives Statistics released recently show teen birth rates have reached a record low in our country. And in Arkansas, we have seen a 5% decline in one year and a 45% decline in the past 25 years.

However, teen pregnancy continues to be an issue that healthcare workers, families, and us as lawmakers need to address. In 2013, 4,000 births in our state were to teenage mothers.

While every life is celebrated, we know from years of research that if more children are born to parents who are ready and able to care for them, we would see a significant reduction in a host of social problems afflicting children. Preventing teen pregnancy can affect the present and future well-being of teens and families, while also contributing to the economic health of our state. Unintended pregnancies cost the state over $60 million a year.

In our recent legislative session we passed a bill designed to make significant progress toward lowering teen pregnancy in the state. Knowing that ¾ of all teenage births in our state are to mothers 18 and 19 years old, we passed Act 943 which requires all public universities and community colleges

to work with the Higher Education Coordinating Board to develop an action plan and submit it to the legislature on an annual basis. The financial costs of a child often results in these women dropping out of college in order to work and provide for the child.

The action plan required in the bill will incorporate information from the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists about preventing unplanned pregnancy including teaching abstinence to teenage girls and boys. It would also establish mentors to younger grades to act as role models of successful behavior, identify grants available, and identify other challenges such as childcare, transportation, and financial aid. The bill requires the plan to be presented on Legislative Council no later than November 3 of this year.

Given the close relationship between teen pregnancy and educational achievement, taking steps to address high teen pregnancy and birth rates in our state has potential improve educational attainment, assist young people in achieving their goals, and improve the wellbeing for all of our children.

Rider Registration Underway for CARTI Tour de Rock Cycling Event Benefiting Cancer Patients Set for June 6 Rider registration is currently underway for the 12th annual CARTI Tour de Rock, a cycling-based fundraiser benefiting CARTI cancer patients, scheduled for June 6 at the Burns Park Soccer Complex in North Little Rock.

Coulson Oil Company/Road Runner is the presenting sponsor of the 2015 CARTI Tour de Rock, a 100-mile â&#x20AC;&#x153;century rideâ&#x20AC;? departing from Burns Park in North Little Rock and routed through Little Rock, Scott and England that annually attracts more than 1,000

Cyclists participating in the 100-mile ride will depart at 7 a.m., while riders opting for the 62-mile route will head out at 7:15 a.m. Participants in the

Participants and supporters can enjoy a family-friendly atmosphere complete with food, games and entertainment from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Riders will receive an event T-shirt and meal as part of their registration package. Non-riding participants may register as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Spirit Ridersâ&#x20AC;? and will receive the same registra-

tion package as cyclists.

National Military Appreciation Month

By Senator John Boozman Arkansas recently celebrated the return of 150 members of the Arkansas National Guard from a nine month deployment, where troops spent much of that time in Kuwait. Members of the National Guard, our troops stationed at the Little Rock Air Force Base and the 188th Wing stand in defense of our nation. Arkansans have always been willing to do their part to serve and protect. In appreciation of the service and sacrifice of these men and women, and all those who have served our nation in uniform, we recognize May as National Military Appreciation Month.

There are many special days we celebrate this month honoring the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces and

those who help strengthen our military.

This year we celebrated the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day. To mark this occasion, I participated in events in Washington with WWII veteran Floyd Brantley of Arkadelphia, who served in the Navy in the Solomon Islands during WWII and continued military service for much of his life.

Like many Americans of my generation, my dad served in WWII as an airman. I enjoyed talking with Mr. Brantley about the experiences of my dad during his years of service.

In honor of the service of our troops like Mr. Brantley and my dad and those who helped on the homefront producing the tanks, ships and aircraft that helped propel the Allies to victory, a flyover of dozens of WWII aircraft flew over the National WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. In a spectacular scene above the National Mall, planes flew in 15 historically sequenced warbird formations representing the major battles of WWII. This unique event highlighted the determination of the Greatest Generation to defeat tyranny and shape the future for citizens all over the world.

Our military families make tremendous sacrifices. Husbands, wives, mothers and fathers and sons and daughters support our troops at home, during deployments and in mission transitions.

This month we recognize these unsung heroes. As a state that is home to thousands of active duty military personnel, I know Arkansans understand the enormous responsibility spouses have in keeping our country safe. Military spouses are essential to the wellbeing of our servicemembers and the strength of our national defense. I look forward to highlighting Arkansasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s military spouses and honoring these champions of our Armed Forces.

Celebrating important days in our nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s military history, the contributions and courage of servicemembers who made victory possible and their families and spouses is a reminder of the resolve of the American spirit and those who help make our country the greatest, freest country the world has ever know. Please join me in celebrating the valor and courage of our Armed Forces and veterans by thanking a family member, friend or neighbor who selflessly sacrifices to defend our freedom.

PBJCEOC 2015 Board Member Openings Pine Bluff Jefferson County Economic Opportunities Commission, Inc. (PBJCEOC), is ready to fill (2) open sits in Arkansas County. Applications are located at 425 S. Main St. Stuttgart, AR. One position will be a private position, in which, applications will be reviewed and selected by the Board of Directors and the other position will be a low-income representative and voted by ballot through the general public.

PBJCEOC, with central offices in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, was chartered as a private, non-profit agency on September 5, 1965 by the Arkansas Secretary of State as a Community Action Agency.

The number of directors of PBJCEOC is fifteen and representa-

tives of persons with low income comprise at least one-third (1/3) of the Board, representatives of local elected officials are additional 1/3 of the board and representatives of business, industry, labor, religious, welfare, education, and other major groups or interest in the service area comprise the remainder of the Board. Each member of the Board is selected to represent a specific geographic area (County) within the service area and must reside in the area he/she represents.

Specifically, the Board of Directors are asked to oversee the following: to hire, fire, and evaluate the performance of the Executive Director; to plan and to determine major personnel, organization, physical and program policies;

to plan and determining overall program goals and priorities including provisions for evaluating programs against performance; to make final approval of all programs, proposals and budgets; to enforce compliance with all contracting, grant requirements; to oversee the extent of quality of performance of the poor in the programs; to determine rules and procedures for the governing Board; to select the officers and members of the executive committee and any other committees of the Board and to provide support to PBJCEOC Executive Director in development of action and services for persons of low income.

PBJCEOC Still Running Summer Regular Assistance Program Pine Bluff – Hot weather across the region have left many struggling to cool their homes. For those needing help paying their energy bills, Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) may be the answer. PBJCEOC has funds to help these households with electrical payments.

PBJCEOC started administering LIHEAP in its five counties, which include Jefferson, Grant, Cleveland, Arkansas and Lincoln and still has funding. LIHEAP assists households with home energy and cooling bills. This summer portion of LIHEAP is for electric bills only, focusing on the cooling efforts across the state. All applications will be accepted on a first come, first served walk in basis. Applications will be taken beginning each day at 8am until 3pm. Offices will close for lunch between the hours of noon and one o’clock pm.

Applicants for LIHEAP assistance

must meet income guidelines. For a household of 1, monthly countable income is $1,482. For each additional person in the household, add $468. Countable income includes check stubs, child support, unemployment, housing utility assistance, SSI, SSA, TEA, VAS and retirement benefits. To apply for assistance, the household should bring a copy of the current utility bill, social security numbers, and proof-of- income and date of birth for all household members.

Shut off notices will not be accepted. Clients must have a working knowledge of household resources. Additional information may be required during the interview process. Failure to provide verification requested may result in delay or denial of assistance. Checklist and No-Income verification forms are available now at your local EOC office.

PBJCEOC serves the counties of Jefferson, Grant, Cleveland, Arkansas and Lincoln. PBJCEOC is a private, non-profit organization which operates an extensive range of social programs and services targeting low income households.

PBJCEOC works in conjunction with other agencies and organizations to provide assistance to lowincome families and individuals within the community. The range of services provided can vary with the needs of each community.

Some of the services offered consist of: Housing, Food, Employment, Weatherization and Energy Assistance.

Mayweather’s Defense Too Much for Manny

By Kevin Brown With an impenetrable defensive performance, Floyd “Money” Mayweather remained perfect with a unanimous decision in his much-hyped “Fight of the Century” bout with Manny Pacquiao last Saturday night. The fight, which will go down as the richest fight in history, drew celebrities, die hard and even casual boxing fans to a high-fevered crescendo, complete with wacky Justin Bieber, Jimmy Kimmel and the Burger King mascot appearances, as well as a bizarre Jamie Foxx rendition of the National Anthem. But to most, the crazy shenanigans were the most interesting aspect of the evening.

A fight that finally came about after a five-plus year tease actually boiled down to boxing excellence.

Was it action packed? No. Was it drama filled? No. Was it technically executed by the greatest fighter

of his generation? Absolutely. The “Fight of the Century” will not even go down as the fight of the year. And with the Canelo Alverez squaring off against James Kirkland on May 9th, it may not even be the fight of the month. But it was a boxing clinic on the part of Mayweather, utilizing his defensive wizardry to keep a usual punchhappy Pacquiao at bay. Over the course of the fight, Mayweather outworked Pacquiao, landing 148 punches out of 435, while a frustrated Manny only landed 81 out of 429. Floyd’s length, shoulderrolling defense and jab frustrated Manny, who was able to fire off a few flurries and land a few solid lefts, but was otherwise unable to cut off the ring, get inside and throw punches in bunches with his typical odd-angle tendencies.

When the dust settled at the MGM

Grand in Las Vegas, Mayweather showed exactly the kind of fighter he is: careful, calculating, boring (to most) and ultimately, one of the best ever. He is a great boxer, just not an exciting one. It’s like watching a NASCAR race with no crashes. A baseball game with a pitching chess match that ends 1-0.

A basketball game with no dunks.

Boxing fans can appreciate it. Action fans are calling for MMA. But, the most impressive part of the match was making a fighter many believe to be the second, if not best, pound-for-pound fighter in the world look like a sparring partner. By displaying the kind of fighter Mayweather is and has always been, he showed what his greatest competition, Pacquiao, is not: Money.

Reminder: Arkansas Century Farm Applications Due May 31 The Arkansas Agriculture Department would like to remind potential applicants that it is accepting applications for the 2015 Arkansas Century Farm program. The program recognizes Arkansas’s rich agricultural heritage and honors families who have owned and farmed the same land for at least 100 years. The program is voluntary and places no restrictions on the land. Since the program’s inception in 2012, 239 farms have been certified as Arkansas Century Farms.

To qualify, farms must meet the following criteria: The same family must have owned the farm for 100 years by December 31, 2015. The line of ownership from the original settler or buyer may be through children, grandchildren, siblings, and nephews or nieces, including through marriage and adoption.

The farm must be at least 10 acres of the original land acquisition and make a financial contribution to the overall farm income.

Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson said, “The family farm is an Arkansas tradition — a way of life for generations of hard-working folks and a precious resource for all. In honoring those families who are part of this great tradition, the Arkansas Century Farm Program recognizes the historical relevance of the family farm and its important place in Arkansas’s future.”

Nationally, over 96% of all agricultural operations are family farms.

Arkansas currently has over 44,000 farms on 13.8 million acres with the average farm size of 314 acres.

“It’s a privilege for the Arkansas Agriculture Department to recognize the Arkansas families who have persevered for a century or

more to provide food, fiber, timber, and energy” said Wes Ward, Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture.

Qualified applicants will be presented with a personalized metal sign and a certificate. Only the legal owners of the land may apply.

There is no cost to apply for the Arkansas Century Farm program.
