The DeWitt Dog Days was held Saturday, May 2nd on the court square from 10:00 a.m. till 1:00 p.m. to raise money for the animal shelter. The event was sponsored by Caring 4 Canines. The day started off with a rabies clinic held

at the DeWitt Fire Department by Dr. Prescott. A pet show, pet parade, hot dog eating contest and face painting followed the clinic. Prizes were given away for the shortest and tallest, longest and shortest ears, shortest tail, best

dog tricks and overall best in show. Dr. Prescott and Earl Beard tied at the adult hot dog eating contest with both eating 8 and a half hot dogs in 3 minutes and Colton Layman won in the kids division eating 9 hot dogs in 3 minutes.

DeWitt Dragons finished their baseball season with a big win, after a tough season for the young team. This years team began with only 13 players and due to injuries, ended the season with 11. Though this seasons record of 3-14 does not reflect the hard work, heart, and dedication of these young men.

The Dragons season ended in a double header at home against Dollarway Cardinals. In game one at the bottom of the 7th, Dragons trailed 3-5, when

Game two, The Dragons were down by 9 for most of the game. The boys pulled deep rallied back and defeated Dollarway with a 24-15 victory!

DeWitt Dragonettes will return to Regional Tournament this week. This will make Coach Bobby Peeks 20th year to successfully get his team to Regionals.

The ladies hard work paid off with a season record of 9-5 in conference play and 16-7 overall. The seasons came to an end at home with big wins for the girls, beating Dollarway 16-0 in game one, where mercy rule came into effect.

And game two ending with a 15-0 win in 3 innings. Dragonettes also took down Forrest City Mustangs at home with game one win of 3-2, and game 2 win of 6-0. The Dragonettes will take on Mena in round one of Regionals, Friday, May 8 at 10 a.m. in Dumas.

They would love support from all Dragon fans!

Obituary Jerry Burley

Jerry Lee Burley, 64, of Gautier died Wednesday, April 29, 2015.

Mr. Burley was born July 18, 1950 in DeWitt, AR to Cecil Leon and Geneva Lindley Burley. He was a graduate of DeWitt High School. After high school, Mr. Burley enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he made career serving until 1991. While in the service he married Georgia Lynn Blyberg. He was stationed in Florida and in Arkansas and also was stationed overseas in Turkey. Mr. Burley enjoyed camping, fishing, and gardening. He had a large collection of Hot Wheels.

Mr. Burley was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Christine Wilkerson. He is survived by his wife, Georgia Lynn Burley of Gautier, MS; three daughters, Melissa Ann Ridgeway and Stephanie Lynn Kirby, both of Manning, SC and Jennifer Burley Peters of Gulfport, MS; eight grandchildren; four sisters, Linda Kenyon of D’Iberville, MS, Shirley Brandhorst of Gautier, MS, Gloria Eason of DeWitt, AR, and Tanya Gray of Gautier, MS; two brothers, Don Edwin Burley of Gautier, MS and Timothy Burley of Warren, AR; and a host of relatives and friends.

Visitation was Monday, May 4, 2015 from 11:00am-12:00 noon followed by the funeral at 12:00 noon at O’Bryant-O’Keefe Funeral Home in Gautier, MS. Burial followed at Biloxi National Cemetery in Biloxi, MS. Obituary Trudy Walters Trudy Jane Walters, 67, of DeWitt died May 1, 2015. She was born December 18, 1947, in Biscoe to James David Rollins and Pauline Gertrude Speight Rollins. She retired as the manager of the DeWitt Co-op.

Survivors include her children Dale Walters and April Walters of DeWitt; three sisters Helen Hale of Des Arc, Sally Walker of Brinkley, and Judy Pettit of Almyra; Whitney Walter, Devin Walters, and Emma Davis; and two great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and a sister.

Obituary Carolyn Pryor Carolyn Ferguson Pryor was born on December 25, 1935 in DeWitt, Arkansas and passed away on April 29, 2015 in Jackson, Mississippi.

In those 79 years, she did a lot of living. She graduated from the University of Mississippi with a degree in pharmacy, worked as the sole pharmacist at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson until she met and married Shap Pryor. She lived in Jonesboro, Arkansas for most of her life where she raised her family and lived life to the fullest. Her last 10 years were spent in Jackson, Mississippi so that she could be closer to Ole Miss football games, her 3 children (Lesley, Lyn and Pard) and 4 grandchildren (Will, Hallie, Bailey, and Mary Morgan). Carolyn (known to many as Bobo and Smiley) loved her family, friends, dogs, Ole Miss, her years of playing tennis, reading, babies of all sorts, and all of her Melton Drive kids. She and her family simply could not have made it these last 4 years with the help, support, and very good care of Loretta Powell, Keysha Norwood, Sarah Gray, Josette Moore, Porsha Moore, Deanne Gilbert, and Debra King.

She is survived by her children, Lesley Pryor Mosby (Rush), Lyn Pryor Crawford, Shapard Hanner Pryor, Jr. (Stacey Jo); her grandchildren, Will Mosby (Betsey), Hallie Mosby, Bailey Pryor and Mary Morgan Pryor; and her sisters, Nancy Ferguson Rasco and Becky Ferguson Ehrlicher. She is preceded in death by her husband, Shapard “Papa” Pryor, and her parents, Elmer and Gladys Ferguson.

A memorial service was held on Friday, May 1, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Northminster Baptist Church in Jackson, with visitation at 12:00 pm.

Correction

In reference to the article, “Public Safety Committee Meets with Volunteer Fire Department” published in the April 16th edition of the DeWitt Era-Enterprise, those in attendance at the meeting were misinformed that using sirens en route to the fire department when reporting to a fire was not permitted. City Attorney T. Buie recently provided clarification stating that according to Arkansas Code Annotated Section 27-36301(a), firefighters may “use portable dash-mounted red rotating or flashing emergency lights on their privately-owned automobiles when responding to a fire or other emergency.”

DeWitt Elementary Students to Participate in ‘Farm to You’

DeWitt Elementary School children will soon have the opportunity to learn about Arkansas foods and how their body uses those foods as fuel for being active. On May 11-13 the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service exhibit ‘Arkansas Farm to You’ will visit the school and students will get a chance to explore the interactive, walk-through display which will take the students from the farm and through the body. The exhibit consists of 10 stations that make up the agricultural and health adventure including Farmer Dale’s Farm, Milk Processing Plant and Market, Café, Mouth, Stomach, Small Intestine, Muscle, Bone, and Skin. Groups of 8–10 students will spend about six minutes at each station participating in activities and learning about the relationships between agriculture, food, and health choices. More than 5,000 Arkansas elementary school students have experienced ‘Farm to You’. The exhibit is available in all 75 counties across the state. This program is available to all eligible persons regardless of race, color, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, religion, age, disability, marital or veteran status, genetic information or any other legally protected status. If you require a reasonable accommodation to participate or need materials in another format, please contact the County Extension office as soon as possible or Dial 711 for Arkansas Relay. A Thought

By Michael P. Daniel “If the world hates you, you know it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.” John 15:18-19 NKJV The election season is a good portrayal of what Jesus is talking about, although I would not liken politics to faith. What I mean is that when a person announces his or her political candidacy, the guns of opposition are locked and loaded. These wanna-be’s have skylined themselves for all to see, so they become the latest targets not only for the opposition but for the media as well.

The same might be said of publicly announcing one’s allegiance to Jesus. I don’t mean from the safety of a computer keyboard or the sanctuary of a church. I mean daily living, making deliberate choices to defy the world and its demands, to deny oneself of the world’s empty promises and take up one’s own cross for the Eternal Promise. To challenge what the world declares to be “normal”, and choose something better and more lasting. To worship when the lake or

the golf course would be so much more fun. To study the Scripture when reading “Fifty Shades of Grey” or watching a favorite TV show might be a little more exciting. To decline a social invitation in favor of a prayer or Bible study group. To do those things that distinguish us from the rest of the world. To hungrily pursue righteousness rather than popularity.

These are the things that leave no doubt in the minds of others where our allegiance is. We make deliberate religious choices by declining other social choices.

While we certainly make some choices based on our own desires and what we may feel like doing, the truth is when we are invited to a social or sporting event that will come only occasionally but will interfere with a religious event (say Sunday worship), we will reason that we can “always” go to church, but we will not always have this particular opportunity. We are also aware that if we decline too many social invites, we risk not being invited again.

What we are looking for is social acceptance AND Divine acceptance; the respectability of Christianity and the acceptability of our unchurched friends. We do

On Speaking the Truth

By Tom Smith Nowadays it’ll certainly get you into trouble.

No one needs to tell us about political correctness and its prominence in our society. This is especially so in the areas of religion, faith and practice. And, those who dare to speak out—like the prophets of old—can expect to receive “the prophet’s wages,” which varies from being ridiculed, ostracized or even being imprisoned for one’s beliefs.

That’s why so many walk around on proverbial eggshells today, lest they become the target of the PC Patrol or some special interest group that decries their “bigotry,” “phobia,” “intolerance,” etc. But, in the process real Truth is diluted, compromised or completely rejected—which leads to distortion, discord, division and depravity.

In Old Testament times prophets were feared, especially as they said “Thus says the Lord” and pronounced judgment on their sinful society. If their prophetic warnings came true, others knew they were sent from God; if not, they were taken out and stoned.

By the Apostle Paul’s day prophets had pretty much been replaced by preachers who boldly stood before an audience, declaring God’s eternal Truths and calling people to repentance. Even then, such messages weren’t popular; that’s why Paul wrote, “Have I become your enemy because I tell you the Truth?” (Galatians 4:16).

Thus, it’s clear that down through the centuries courageous individuals like Martin Luther—who posted the 95 Thesis on the castle door at Wittenberg that began the Protestant Reformation—or Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who opposed Hitler and was executed in a concentration camp on April 9, 1945, were treated like the prophets of old.

But, thankfully, in the years that followed, their actions were vindicated and later generations realized that they spoke the Truth, even though it cost them dearly.

Sadly, today, there are fewer and fewer who are willing to risk speaking the Truth. More and more pulpits are silent when it comes to sin. More and more politicians are guilty of doing what’s expedient and operating by consensus and compromise rather than conviction and courage.

Is it any wonder then that our nation is unraveling at the seams? Is it any wonder that we are following in the footsteps of the Roman Empire that was destroyed from within by their moral depravity and decay?

No, it’s no wonder.

And, in reality, we have no one to blame but ourselves. In fact, the greater blame falls on the ones who were expected to be the guardians of Truth, but succumbed to social pressure, intimidation, fear of lawsuits or physical harm, etc.

But, dear Reader, it’s still not too late to stand up and speak out—so long as it’s based upon Truth, not personal opinion. And, what might that Truth be?

Quite simply the eternal, unchanging Word of God as found in the Bible. From our inception as a nation, our laws, social mores, views-and-values, etc., were based upon Judeo-Christian teachings.

Thus, when a preacher, teacher, politician, etc., says “Homosexuality is wrong” or “Abortion’s wrong” or “Living together without being married is a sin,” etc., he/she can expect a violent backlash. But, that shouldn’t keep us from continuing to speak the Truth and warning those whose lifestyles are in direct opposition to God’s expressed Word and Will.

I determined a long time ago that I was going to base my life upon those teachings I found in the Bible. For some 47 years now I’ve tried to faithfully proclaim the Truth as best as I can, knowing it’d be unpopular or sometimes cost me dearly.

But, that’s okay.

I’d rather be known as a God-pleaser instead of a man-pleaser—for one of these days each one of us will stand before this One Who created us in our mother’s womb. And, only those who’ve sought to live in His Truth can expect to hear Him say “Well done.” All the rest will hear Him say with stern sadness, “Depart from Me, you worker of iniquity; I never knew you” (Matthew 7:23).

not want to be socially ostracized and labeled “Jesus freaks”.

Our Lord understands all of this. Having created us to live in community, He knows exactly how we are wired. We need the company of others. We need to be married and make a life with someone. We need to have children and grandchildren. We need community at least on some basic level. But we need also to “seek first the Kingdom of Heaven” and then trust that everything else will work out for the Glory of God and for our well-being. We need to trust that Jesus means everything He says.

But first deliberate choices must be made, and these choices go beyond “one-and-done” event. These are choices to be made daily and for reasons often beyond our capacity to understand – at least at first. Jesus assures us, however, that as difficult as the choices may seem at least initially, over time we will learn to look upward rather than outward – and for reasons we will soon begin to understand. It is why Jesus encourages His followers to “ask”, to “seek”, to “knock” not once or occasionally but constantly. This is how you and I know someone is serious about a relationship with us. Why would The Lord look at us any differently?

“Those who persevere to the end will be saved.”

We are first to judge our allegiances and faith by the deliberate choices we make and why we make those choices. It always comes down to whom we are trying to please: a culture that will certainly fade in time by death or fickle choices, or the Kingdom which is everlasting. We need not worry ourselves about the hatred that comes from the world; for as with terror groups or popular-clique groups, there is no appeasement to be found – not without compromising our integrity and the character of our faith.

Jesus said, “If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father.

But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law; ‘They hated Me without a cause’.”

This means they have seen and have witnessed and have experienced all we have seen and witnessed and experienced; and they made a choice to decline by word and deed. Let us not make the same mistake.

Sirs, is This the Time?

Is this the time the Bible speaks of when it says, “For behold, the day cometh that shall but as an oven, and all the proud, yes, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble, and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith The Lord of Hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.” (Malachi 4:1) Have we entered into the period of time that the fire will fall and fulfill these scriptures?

All who know The Lord, know that His Word never fails, and that this time shall surely come. The question then is, has that time arrived?

Did God send His prophet that He promised was to come before the coming of that great and dreadful day?

Malachi 4:5) Did he come and was rejected by the religious world, like as they have always rejected God’s true prophets?

We will answer our own question, and emphatically say, “Yes, this proven word prophet has come and gone! And, yes, it is now judgement time, it is fire falling time!

To those who doubt this we say, “Watch and see.”

God’s prophesied Word is not hindered, not stopped by those who don’t believe it! Matthew 21:44 “An whosoever shall fall on this stone (fall down and repent before Christ, who is the Rock) (Stone) shall be broken (His pride broken down and he will be forgiven and saved.) “But on whomsoever it shall fall, it shall grind him to powder.”

Those who refuse to repent and believe God’s Word will experience God’s wrath, and be ground to powder!

And so we ask, sirs, is this the time? Do the signs that are all around us prove what is about to happen? Again we say “yes,” we have our warning!

Nations are breaking, Israel’s awakening; The signs that the prophets foretold; The Gentile church, their days are numbered, with horrors encumbered, Return, oh dispersed to your own!

The day of Redemption is near, Men’s hearts are failing for fear; Be filled with the Spirit your lamps trimmed and clear; Look up, your redemption is near.

False prophets are lying, God’s Word they are denying; That Jesus The Christ is our God. This generation spurns God’s Revelation, But we’re walking where the apostles have trod.

Look up, your redemption is near!

Earthquakes are breaking, The earth is shaking, Soon His Bride will be taken; Look up your redemption is near!

Is your lamp gone out?

Then get under the spout, For the oil is being poured out, Look up your redemption is near!

Foolish virgins are asleep, all His Word they won’t keep, Look up, the great tribulation is near!

Lord, help us wake up, and shake ourselves, and take the Bible off the shelf, Look up our redemption is near. Amen!

Clawson, CIS Student Honored at Luncheon

$2 Million Will Benefit Ultra-Modern Foundation Seed Facility LITTLE ROCK â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The Arkansas Rice Research and Promotion Board has directed $2 million to help construct an innovative Seed Foundation Facility at the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Rice Research and Extension Center in Stuttgart. The facility will assist scientists and researchers to bring new higher yielding, high quality rice varieties to market so Arkansas farmers can profitably grow rice that meets worldwide demand.

The center, along with the new Foundation Seed Facility, is operated by the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. The new facility is expected to cost $8.6 million, and construction will begin this summer and be completed in 12 months. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Rice Research and Promotion Board has always been forward-thinking in how it applies research to advance Arkansas agriculture, and we sincerely appreciate their commitment to ensuring Arkansas will remain the epicenter of rice production and rice research,â&#x20AC;? said Mark Cochran, vice president for the UA Systemâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Division of Agriculture. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The board has been a valuable partner with us for more than 30 years now, and our united partnership means better results for our stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economy and all Arkansans.â&#x20AC;?

The Arkansas Rice Research and Promotion Board consists of nine rice producers nominated by industry organizations and appointed by the governor. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The cooperative relationship between the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, the Rice Research and Promotion Board and the rice farmers of Arkansas is alive and well, as evidenced by the construction of this new Foundation Seed Facility,â&#x20AC;? said Marvin Hare, chairman of the Arkansas Rice Research and Promotion Board. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This commitment is an excellent example of the great things we can accomplish when the entire rice industry works together toward the common goal of sustainable rice production in Arkansas.â&#x20AC;? The $2 million for the new facility will come through tariff rate quota funds generated for domestic rice research from the U.S.-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement, which established an annual tariff rate quota for U.S. rice exported to Colombia. The funds are reserved only for research efforts and are allocated by the Arkansas Rice Research and Promotion Board. The Arkansas Soybean Promotion Board and the Arkansas Wheat Promotion Board have both previously made contributions to the new facility as well.

SEED FACILITY WILL SUPPORT ARKANSAS FARMERS The facility will contain both seed cleaning and storage capabilities with the ability to serve more than 25 rice, soybean

and wheat varieties each year. Along with the ability to clean seeds to Plant Board-specified guidelines, the facility will be able to handle both genetically modified and non-genetically modified seeds. Cold storage will also be available for long-term seed storage.

The new facility will continue cooperative research efforts between the promotion board and the Division of Agriculture that have already resulted in the development of new technologies related to fertility, pest control, irrigation, and weed control, in addition to the development of new rice varieties.

BOARD CONTINUES SUPPORT FOR AGRICULTURE RESEARCH The Arkansas Rice Research and Promotion Board was formed in 1985 by the General Assembly to administer the rice checkoff program. Under the program, rice farmers contribute 1.35 cents per bushel for rice research and the first buyer of rice contributes 1.35 cents per bushel for promotion and market development efforts. Younger Wins Senior Center Raffle

Every year Meals on Wheels America kicks off it’s annual fundraising effort called March for Meals during the months of March and April. This year, the DeWitt Senior Center held a raffle on April 30, 2015 as a fundraiser for our Meals on Wheels program. The DeWitt Senior Center and director Julie Duncan would like to thank the community for their participation in this fundraiser by donating the items and by purchasing tickets. Arkansas Rice Specialty License Plates Little Rock, Ark. - A special Arkansas Rice license plate has arrived in Department of Finance and Administration revenue offices. Specialty fees from the plates will help fund scholarships and education programs for students pursing a career in agriculture or the food industry.

Public Safety Committee Meets With Police Chief

By Terrye Seamon The Public Safety Committee met with DeWitt Police Chief Jim Tucker Monday, April 20 to discuss several items for possible discussion and consideration at the next DeWitt City Council meeting May 11.

Chief Tucker brought up a couple of financial issues concerning the DeWitt Police Department. The first of which was overtime for department employees.

“The last ten years we have run $20,000 plus in overtime because it requires it.

This year I was cut to $5,000. We are $1,908.38 over the budget on that line item now,” Tucker said.

Although he has come extremely close to his projected budget the last few years, Tucker said this year it was cut.

“I’ve asked for approximately $23,000 for three years in a row, and my budget has come in less than three percent

from what was asked for all three years in a row,” Tucker told the committee.

He explained the large amount of overtime is the result of employees having to take off due to sickness, comp time or vacation. Alderman Debbie Fox asked the chief if it would be better to receive additional overtime money or to hire an additional police officer. Tucker said that since all overtime salaries come from the same fund, the problem was not just the policemen, it was the dispatchers too. “Those of us on salary are working to make some of that less, but you cannot cover it all,” he said.

The second financial matter the police chief brought up for the committee to consider was possibly purchasing evidence software and equipment that would replace the current system of logging in and tracking evidence, which is obsolete.

Tucker told the committee that he tries to maintain a balance of $13,000 to $19,000 in the police equipment fund, and currently the fund has a total of $13,127.

He explained that the one-time purchase of $3,500 would include an additional piece of software that would integrate into the system the department already uses, a bar code reader and a printer.

The police department already gets a yearly grant of $4,200 to $4,400, and this year, Tucker said, the money was used to purchase evidence collection materials such as finger print kits, a new computer, fire extinguishers for police cars and a chair. He told the committee that there might be a second grant this year, but it probably would not come through until August or September. He said he would check into the situation

and confirm whether the second grant was a possibility. “I don’t mind waiting.

We have done it this way this long. A few months is not going to make that much difference, but in the long run, we are going to have to have this,” the chief said.

Chief Tucker informed the committee that he had issued the new police car.

The car was not issued to a police office before now because it was not ready.

“Once we got the car here, we had to wait for equipment to get here. Once it all got here, we had to put it all together, and it took some time to do all that,” Tucker said.

Another item discussed was possibly instituting a three-way stop in Crescent Park Circle at some point in the future.

Psychology Students Present Original Research

Psychology students at the University of Arkansas at Monticello presented original research papers at the recent Arkansas Symposium for Psychology Students held on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. Over 200 students and faculty from 18 universities and four states were represented at the conference. Dr. Rick Clubb, dean of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Dr. Seungyeon Lee, assistant professor of psychology, accompanied the students to the conference. Clubb, who directed the projects, stated that the

symposium represents a great venue for students to demonstrate their research abilities. The students were required to create and conduct original experiments during the spring semester. Projects ranged in interests from college students’ perceptions of women in differing footwear to the influence of mental imagery on sports performance. The conference also provided students with seminars dealing with how to prepare for graduate school and getting research published.

This was the 28th year UAM has participated in the symposium.
